- pondster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can see $99 - They would move a hell of alot of systems giving a larger audience for downloading the retro games (Which you buy online and download) I can see this exploading into an Itunes type for gaming.
- budsharpe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nintendo U.S. launch prices
(from http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/643/643170p1.html
---------------------------
Nintendo Entertainment System - $199
Super Nintendo Entertainment System - $199
Nintendo64 - $199
GameCube - $199
Nintendo will probably launch the Revolution at $199. It's in their blood. - RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anything under $300 would be great as far as I'm concerned. At $100 I would buy one in an instant, however, as others have said, that's unlikely. Although, I wouldn't imagine the revolution would need to be much more powerful than the Gamecube, since their main focus is gameplay and not graphics... $100 wouldn't be too far off, I'm guessing, if all they really did was slightly modify the existing gamecube internals (i.e., maybe ramp up some clockspeeds, ram, etc..), or even take the existing Gamecube and put it into this new, sleek, Revolution case with these new controllers...
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1""Why wouldn't Nintendo, who's got the money to lose, take a hit in the beginning by offering $99 Revolutions?"
Nintendo has never taken a hit on their systems. That's the only reason they have so much money - they actually make money off their hardware unlike Sony and MS."
I was going to say something like that.
"I find $99 to be hard to believe. The specs on the thing are pretty decent when compared with a desktop PC of even 3x the price:
* 1 IBM Custom PowerPC 2.5 GHz (dual-thread) with 256 KB Level-1 and 1MB of Level-2 cache (L3 cache is rumored)
* ATI Custom based RN520 core
* 13 billion dot product per second
* 600 MHz.
* 2048x1268 max resolution
* 256 MB’s of 1T-SRAM
* 32 shader pipelines
* Peak Geometry Performance: 500 million tri/sec
* Peak Shader Performance: ~50 billion shader ops/sec
* system Memory: 512 MB of 1T-SRAM (700 MHz)
* Physics Processing Unit with 32 MB of dedicated RAM, which will link to the CPU and GPU."
Where did you find this spechs? I think they're not official. - timmyboywonder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1um try $249.99
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm 99% sure this system will launch at $199 and that price is fine.
- Acill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If they could pull it off I would pay $99 in a second. I wouldnt even have to think about it. I would be willing to bet a lot of people would. Look how long it took the cube to be hacked. People actually paid for games for a lot of years. If they can do the same for the revolution then they would make all the money back with no problems.
- DarkCloud14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoa dude, I'd soo buy it. I think the price is believable, seeing as how the GameCube's brice is 99 bucks, but the Revolution *does* seem so much better, so while I think the price is belivable, I still think Nintendo would sell it for $150 because it's still a reasonable (price compared to the PS3 and the 360) so people would still buy it. (Hell, I know I would :D)
- DarkCloud14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah, I just read more comments, I forgot about the Micro. Yeah, I guess the Micro would be $99 and the Rev would be $199... (hey, perhaps the Rev was $199 all along and someone just heard wrong :P or they forgot the 1).
- Cyborg771, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't see a launch price below $149.99 but god if it were $99 It would sell a hell of a lot of units. At least we know that it will be cheaper than the competition.
- LaRockus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A $99 launch would be great. But unfortunately unreasonable. However if Nintendo was willing to take that large of a loss with the console, think about the rate that they would sell. That leaves them wide open for later. Drop a huge burst of games and the next thing you know your dropping a killer profit. Because now instead of selling games to... we'll say 1000 people (hypothetically) who bought the console for $200. Your now selling to 10,000 people because even us broke asses can afford 100 clams. Hell I know 14 year olds that can come up with that in a few weeks mowing lawns.
Regardless of what the cost I'm going to buy one for the simple fact that I still remember when the Nintendo was first released and it kicked 10 kinds of ass back then, and still does at times. Its comfort I'll admit, but god damn it I like being comfortable. They have always been there always will and I'll stick with them before Sony or MS, regardless of the system, because really, post Atari, Nintendo brought us to where we are now... (KNOW THE ROOTS KIDS)
And we all know deep down that unlike Sony and MS, Nintendo won't break that $200 mark. It's just not in them. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not Possible. Even if, by a wild stretch, the hardware cost $99, the distribution infrastructure, marketing and OS development would add at least $30/unit, and they would need about $20 profit to justify making it!
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0150 dollars is the smallest amount I could see it selling as.
Who cares, though? If it's 199 or less, AWESOME. PS3 and Xbox360 aren't worth it until a few years down the line when they're cheap. - modpancake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not even a console gamer, and the $400-600 these next consoles will go for will make me even less of a console gamer. But honestly, if the Revolution was $99, I'd buy it no matter what.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd pay $200 for the revolution simply because of its different style of gameplay and Nintendo seems focused on real time gameplay rather than fake numbers, pre-rendered cut scenes, and talking trash.
Of course I'd mod the ***** out of it and steal all the games ASAP too though. - shinta86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Coming one who is going to wait on the next gen systems due to very high prices, if Nintendo were to do that I would definitely get one. The Gamecube is one of my favorite systems right now.
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea. I posted those specs without realizing they were completely fabricated. I found several sites with the same specs posted, so I assumed they were the real deal.
the cpu is probably right. it's an IBM PowerPC ("Broadway"), which should be in the 2Ghz-3Ghz range when it's ready. And we keep hearing they are going with ATI. and a chunk of flash memory. and I think those are USB 2.0 ports in the pictures too. But anyways. I think it's supposed to have 802.11 networking too, which would make sense if they want to operate with the DS.
But despite unknown specs, a $100s for a console is a pretty good deal. - Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0at $99 I'd probabily buy 2
screw split screen multiplayer, set it up on two seperate tv sets
but I serously don't see this happening, the cheapest they could possibly go without getting laughed at would be $150 - ManiacFive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0at 99 POUNDS i'd buy one for sure,
Thats BS about Nintendo not selling its consoles for a loss though, the N64 and Gamecube both sold for a loss early on in their lives. - spacemanspork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$99 is highly unlikely. I'm guessing $199 which is still a steal, but I bet the controllers are going to be pricey.
personally, i don't mind the fact that the hardware won't be as good. i'm buying a console for the fun factor. nice grphics help the fun factor, but ultimately i can easily see myself having more fun with a revolution controller playing a survival horror game that looks only 1.5x better than a ps2 instead of playing a normal survival horror game that looks 3x better than a ps2. - xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Way, If so, which would be Awesome But not likly.
- puzzud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I read something regarding the last request of the head of Nintendo that recently stepped down. He asked mainly two things of those at Nintendo:
1) To make new and innovative forms of video game interaction.
2) To make sure these new forms are affordable and not bloated.
I'd say they certainly sound like they are working on (1) with the Revolution. I don't know about $99, but I believe that the Revo will be dramatically less expensive than its two rival systems. They are trying to broaden their audience to many that may not have ever picked up a video game in the past--not going after the hardcore gamers (the kind that would shell out $300+ just for the base console). - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah lol nintendo sux lol resident evil 4 more like resident pokemon 4 kids m i rite
Sarcasm out of the way, a $100 console could potentially put them in the lead, marketshare wise. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nintendo will mostly likely launch it at their historical $199 price point. That's still a lot cheaper than the "real" Xbox 360 ($300) and the proposed PS3 price ($500).
$200 is very reasonable for next-gen, and with today's inflation (compare $200 today to when the NES cost $200) that's almost a steal itself. That's almost the price of three X360 or PS3 games (if $60 each = $180).
I wouldn't be surprised if every gamer, casal or not, bought one of these just for the hell of it.
The only gamers who won't buy one of these are the 14-year-olds pretending to be 30-year-olds saying PlayStation is for older gamers. In reality, older gamers prefer Nintendo and the pre-teens go for the PS2. - dbpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dang, I wish. It'd be sweet. Then hopefully I could get a 360 with that too. but it's a definite no. =(
- ReyBrujo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the right question is, what are you willing to pay for a Revolution? I believe the USD 200 mark is fine with me. If it is higher, I would wait until it goes below 200. If it is cheaper, I buy it at once.
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it sold for $99 Nintendo would own the console market.
- phrostypoison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Trade-in your Gamecube for $99 perhaps?
Or a special limited time offer?
Dugg. - Alaerus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am very excited about the release of the new Nintendo Revolution. I think that regardless of what price it comes out, the system will be a success
- morsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0has anybody thought about that maybe this is a ploy from the nintendo marketing department to see how much people would be willing to pay for their console? I mean if I worked for Nintendo I would be researching threads like this to see the public's response to a rumor like this
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0"has anybody thought about that maybe this is a ploy from the nintendo marketing department to see how much people would be willing to pay for their console? I mean if I worked for Nintendo I would be researching threads like this to see the public's response to a rumor like this"
yes, that cross by mind. - TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"My guess is this is Nintendo's last venture into the console wars. They're going to pull a Sega and make all their money on writing great games."
Hasn't Nintendo stated that the day they stop making consoles is the day they stop making games? - CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doubt it's true but if so, i'll be even more likely to buy it. But im going to be smart and wait a while after release for price drops and possible hardware alterations.
- rainbowjinjo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think it is realistic, but if they would do it, it would be an excellent move for Nintendo. I mean just think about it, look at all the people that said they would buy it if it wa at that price. Now, how many casual gamers would also buy it. But how many casual gamers will go and spend $399 for an Xbox 360? Different market, and I'd like the move.
- vm-01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If Nintendo wants to compete with the new NES consoles it makes all the sense in the world.
For those who don't know, the NES patent just expired, so a lot of companies want to cash in on the nostalgia factor and make new NES consoles for less than US$100. - WarDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate Nintendo. But if it was $99 i'd buy it.
- bakatrinh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$100 a system? I'll take two.
- cankles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01 million dollars?
- Gneisbaard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Prolly gonna be like $99 for the controller alone..
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$99, I'll take five.
- Dekaritae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with most posters in that a $99 launch price is a tad unrealistic. Somewhee in the range of 175-250 is going to be most likely. But, given that the Revolution will play GameCube games out of the box, suppose Nintendo offers it at a discounted price for people who trade in their current GameCube?
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I read correctly last week, Miyamoto said that the dev kits are the same as the Gamecube. So the system is similar, just more powerful--and with a sweet, sweet controller. Nintendo also stands to make a ton of money off of controller add-ons. I agree that $99 is unlikely, but man, wouldn't that be a ballsy way to get back on top of the videogame industry quickly? I'm there at $99 or $199 b/c their 1st party games are worth it.
- canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$99 console with online, wireless controllers, the fully backward library of Nintendo games... THAT IS something i might be intrested in. frankly i don't believe it, but at that price from Day 1 i would clearly adopt it to go along with my xbox 360. i just can't believe it would actually come in at that price though...
- Superfluous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+099 is just crazy. With the way the other systems are shaping up anything 200 or under is going to sell very well. But they can take a hit on hardware since its those 1st party games that keeps people coming back.
- Peach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To Cankles: I believe in getting what you pay for. I am suspicous of the 99 dollar theory, but why would you judge something solely on how much money it costs? If I like it, if it's fun, it's worth it. Whether or not it's expensive. To say you'll only buy something with a big price tag doesn't make you more special that the "little people" out there, it makes it sound like you just want things as a status symbol to impress other people. Why don't you play games for the fun of it? It's really going to bite hard when you pay handsomely for something that is absolutely no fun. It's all about entertainment for me, sorry.
- shamanking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IF the ds was 150 i doubt it will only be 99 dollars
- TheBaumer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To good to be true? I hope not. Although 99 is a bit cheap,even if they doubled the price how could anyone not purchase a revolution. The more and more news that comes out about the revolution, the more I began to think that Nintendo will once again become the major player in the console market.
- dandiemer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if they started it at 99, they'd have no where to go with it. it's a little tricky to raise the price of a product after it's initial offering.
- Forse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If they will produce console which is cheap, has wifi and capable of playing old games from SNES/NES days (as stated in IGN Revolution FAQ) it will totally kill xbox and ps3 :)
- avg_bear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nintendo's main focus has always been profitability. they're not going to take a loss on each console like MS and Sony, and there's no way they could sell a next-gen system for 99 bones.
