"Did Nintendo introduce CD gaming to consoles?"
The SNES CD drive, that Nintendo developed with Sony before they "stole" it for the PlayStation.
"or HardDrives?"
Nintendo 64DD
Check your facts, fanboy. - masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@LinuxPenguin: Of course you're right. Nintendo's desperately trying to hold on in the console market after losing $4 billion in the last generation. Wait, never mind, I seem to be mistaken. That was Microsoft. Now I remember, Nintendo was the only one making profits last round!
Seriously, people.
@wonderboy: Probably not the only person, but I would say you're in the minority. - Vill4no, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm not to fond of the new Revolution controller either, at least till I actually get to try it.
However Nintendo has a good track record when it comes to controller inovation. The d-pad, shoulder buttons, analog joystiq, and rumble pack were all inovations from Nintendo and are now standard features included in MS and Sony's controller.
I just hope that the few 3rd party developers will try to take full advantage of the controller. - birdadderley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So... in 20 years... do you really still think that we are going to be playing with dual analog sticks and controllers that shake when you get bumped. There once was a time when people thought microwaves were heresey. If we were still in the 60's, you people would be saying that we shouldn't be going to the moon. We have to make steps somewhere.
- dbpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Top Tech *Innovations*. PS3 and 360 haven't added much other than horsepower. Hi-Def and Shiny Reflections on metal, doesn't mean its innovative. Take one look at the controller, and tell me it's not new and fresh and, that's right, innovative.
+digg - OswaldKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2On the subject of innovation, Nintendo was the last to bring a CD drive to market, connect to the internet, and incorporate DVD technology into its console.
- graywolf323, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3they don't seem to be ranked...
- GolfDude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3get a clue you sony/MS fanboy..
name 1 invention sony/ms gave to the gaming market..
NOTHING
Sony and MS are more fluff than gaming,,, - doddilus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@hybrid8
exactly because all it can do is change the channel and turn the system on and off
@samsinite
believe it or not, the nes was set up for online play, if you notice there is a slot on the bottom of the console, but it never materialized. Dreamcast was the first into the online console realm (not even mentioning the years of online play the PC already had under its belt) so online play is hardly a microsoft inovation
@ geekologist
sorry your going to miss out - notkevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The SNES CD drive, that Nintendo developed with Sony before they "stole" it for the PlayStation."
However, both Turbo Graphics and Sega (and probably others) released a CD system before Nintendo or Sony. - thomas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Call me old fashion but I think you should wait untill its acctualy 2006 to make a list like that. And if you want to be really strick you have to wait untill 2007.

@GolfDude: well well well,
Did Nintendo introduce CD gaming to consoles? or HardDrives? What about backwards compatability?
------------------------
Atari introduced backward compatability in 1988 or so with the 7800.
Not sure who was first, but I believe Neo/Geo or Sega introduced CDs around 1993.
Nintendo did have that drive device for the N64, which was only sold in Japan and worked with 2 games. Not sure it was a hard drive, though, I think it was more like a Zip/Jazz drive. - antiTRACE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't the article (you did read it right?) talking about the CONTROLLER? not the whole revolution? Maybe I'm wrong.....
- birdadderley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Imagine playing a Star Wars game where you can literally dual-wield the lightsabers, with 2 controllers, and manipulate them in 3D space... or for you other games... can actually _throw_ a football in Madden '08... or can actually _aim_ Master Chief's gun at your target and not moving a damn stick.
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, that's great. Can Time tell me the Lotto numbers for 2006 too?
They don't have a clue... - sporkman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a fuel efficient plane, Revolution, chicken nuggets, cell phones that play music, and a graphic translator. only 2 of those things I would consider intriguing much less "blow my mind" the Plane and the translator are about the only USEFUL things on that list. why don't have have important things like "drug that stops HIV from entering the white blood cells" or "Fanboy repellent"
- Bleek-II, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So you know what your talking about.
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the auto-translating software. Sounds like a universal translator from Star Trek. One question: Will it do Klingon?
- jpbleuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0chicken necks?
- markperia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im more interested in the Fish Nuggets on 3rd.
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"it is important that you post some evidence or example when you make such a claim"
I see no need when they
1) provide none themselves
2) are so blatantly wrong it should be obvious to everyone - birdadderley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0btw the chicken nuggets are an _example_ of the innovation... the article picture is misleading. It is the fact that through genetic engineering, they were able to extract and congeal the surface proteins of any meat to act as a barrier against the oil, so that it only enters the batter.
- m0laria, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2*checks mind* Phew, not blown.
- Womp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Chicken Nuggets?! How in the ***** did that kinda ***** get innovative? Gimme a break! No Digg! Cause CLEARLY chicken nuggets is about technology... hmmmmm....riiiiiiight....
- Pooavenger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This doesn't make sense... nowhere in the article does it say it's the #2 tech revolution. It's just 5 things that will blow your mind. you mis-labelled this. So the number three tech innovation of 2006 is the fat fighter? wtf...
- OswaldKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"The SNES CD drive, that Nintendo developed with Sony before they 'stole' it for the PlayStation."
Sony developed the CD drive FOR Nintendo, not with them. It was a Sony creation with Nintendo branding. In actuality, Sony took their design they were offering to Nintendo, enhanced it, and came up with the Playstation.
About checking facts... - ReyBrujo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think 3DO was one of the first consoles to introduce CDs in 1993.
As for HDs, there is a precedence: Killer Instinct in 1994 was the first arcade to have an incorporated HD. Not a console, but earlier than Xbox release, 7 years later.
"Dreamcast was the first into the online console realm (not even mentioning the years of online play the PC already had under its belt) so online play is hardly a microsoft inovation"
Actually, SNES was able to download games using Stellaview in 1995, that could be said a precedence of online access. And if I recall correctly, there was a "band" that allowed players to play online in vs matches, but I cannot find a link to that right now. - meta87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The third biggest innovation is some kind of chicken nuggets? Glad the revolution sneaked by that crazy new invention.
- birdadderley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"omg is there 2 'a's on the Rev controller? a lil a and a big one? omfg how stupid, i can see the cheat codes. up down a(which one?) small a, b, big a...."
translates to:
"I will only play games with cheat codes." - masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@neotechni:
I love how you just denounce somebody's post without backing up your post in any way, shape, form, or fashion.
It's not that I disagree with you, but it is important that you post some evidence or example when you make such a claim. - rhyinem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't find these products amazing or innovative or even from 2006. Certainly none of them actually blew my mind...
Boo - GuitaristTom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0uhm...the first two are the only new things
- smiley2billion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even though I hate adding fuel to a flame war... about the features of who did what when here to gaming consoles... Online play was up for consoles way back in 95/96. It was called X-play and was for the Genesis and SNES:
http://www.gamezero.com/team-0/articles/features/x-banding/
That site has some info.
as does this one:
http://xband.twksatellite.com/about_xband.htm
They were cool for the time. I'm not sure what happend to mine. - OswaldKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"ok about the snes cd drive, nintendo made a deal with sony to make the cd drives, but sony wanted a cut of the cd game sales. Sony also wanted to sell the snes and cd drive combo and call it the playstation, nintendo wasnt going to have it and axed the project. Sony was pissed so they named their next 32bit console the playstation in spite. Nintendo then went into talks with phillips for a cd drive but nothing ever came of it"
Correct. The CD drives were a complete Sony product. Nintendo did not participate in the physical development of the actual drives at all. The partnership broke down when Nintendo balked at a percentage based and third party deal. This led to the birth of the Playstation.
"believe it or not, the nes was set up for online play, if you notice there is a slot on the bottom of the console, but it never materialized."
I did not know that. I was always told it was an expansion slot
(ie. for more memory, peripherals, etc.), much like the port on the back of the Playstation. - Bleek-II, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"believe it or not, the nes was set up for online play, if you notice there is a slot on the bottom of the console, but it never materialized."

Nintendo 64DD
Check your facts, fanboy."
Sony developed it WITH Nintendo and Nintendo decided to go with the ill-Fated Philips CDi. Definately NOT innovative.
The 64DD was a DYNAMIC DRIVE not HARD DRIVE. It was somewhat like a Zip drive and it was read/write. - Count_Maniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nintendo knows full well what they are taking to market. It's not traditional. Being fully aware of what there doing, Nintendo has some balls right now. They are really confident and are totally backing this. But trust me they Expect all the comments you could imagine. They've got me sold. I love Nintendo. If I want an XBox or PlayStation I'll get one to.

NES online gaming had a bigger community then online pc gaming at the time! - doddilus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok about the snes cd drive, nintendo made a deal with sony to make the cd drives, but sony wanted a cut of the cd game sales. - birdadderley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@madmax22e... Thanks for your intuitive input.
- DeadlyCouncil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea I dunno, I think the controller might be kinda cool, bt i'll stick to a conventional controller myself
- godmode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No info about the console itself has been released. So theyre just going by the controller??
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0"yea I dunno, I think the controller might be kinda cool, bt i'll stick to a conventional controller myself"
Why not simply use both? - jtrowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hell yeah, finally some nintendo recognition
- Gremlinclr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Sure it's revolutionary. Offers the first truly 3D game interface ever for a console, opens up mindbending possibilities for new gameplay mechanics, and offers expandability beyond anything we've seen previously for a gaming console...but it like totally looks like a remote control yo. That's so lame. What a piece of crap."~The average gamers response to the Nintendo Revolution Controller
- Samsinite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a question because I figured you guys would know this, was the segacd drive actually cd's??? If so didn't they have something to do with the whole cd thing?? And also above I said the xbox was the console that really pushed online play, and you can't argue that one. Most people have never heard of any other console ever having any other online features other than the dreamcast, xbox, ps2, and the gamecube. But the console that really pushed their live service from the start was microsoft.
- iFindout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Lame article. I could have came up with the same thousand words or more just by looking at the "Revolution" controller pic, and I don't even have crystal ball like the Time mag armchair author.

1) Technically he provided examples to the points he was trying to make, although they were wrong
2) They obviously weren't obvious to him, and, since you directed your comment to him, you should have shown him. - Superfluous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0..right along side fish shaped food... what an honor
