- Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -17/+67no false promises?
They said they would ship over a million to the U.S. by the end of the year and then took it back... sounds like a false promise to me.
I don't care though, it seems like they just want to concentrate more on Europe and Japan. I already have my Wii so it doesn't affect me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+61Ok, I'm a Wii-fan, but this is a mess-up. This is similar to the Sony 400,000 units broken promise. Bad Nintendo. Sit in the corner.
- Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -11/+53There is no story here.
"Despite spot shortages in some locations, well more than a million Wii systems will be **available** in the United States by the end of the year."
"Available," not "sold." They retracted this statement because it was a mistake in semantics. - HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36"Nobody ever says retract when they mean recall."
This is a Digg title we're talking about here. People just vomit words and then hit submit. Normal conventions rarely apply. And then everyone bitches when someone complains about the title. In any case, this title sucks. - m1ss1ontomars, on 10/12/2007, -13/+34nintendo IS japanese.
also, you meant "its", not "it's". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22They really ***** up by not sending over enough controllers. I have a Wii and its fantastic but none of my friends can play it with me because I only have one damn controller.
- MrStylz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18In other articles that I have read, it has been a supply chain problem, not a manufacturing problem. Logistically speaking, it's been very difficult for them to get their products to the USA. They have now resorted to "airlifts". I think even Nintendo underestimated the popularity of the Wii.
I really wish that some time would be spent to find better articles that go into further detail. - Leo21k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Well thats what I thought it said... 1 million Wii systems were being recalled.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16They can't magically re-box and ship an American console to Europe. Different hardware between NTSC/PAL.
- lava, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14no, not really. The word "retract" is most commonly applied to statements. Nobody ever says retract when they mean recall.
- n00bst3r, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17BREAKING NEWS!
In an act of jealousy, Sony executives have ordered that a major Nintendo manufacturing facility be destroyed. The plant is leveled, lives are lost, and 1,000,000 Wii consoles and 5,000,000 Nintendo DS handhelds are nothing but ash, floating in the atmosphere. The potential for global environmental impacts is strong.
The comes after a report that Sony's decisions made when designing their Playstation 3 console may cost them hundreds of millions of dollars, and severely criple the entire corporation for years to come. More on this story as we get the details. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12lansuggs..no...23 was not being sarcastic. He really IS that much of a loser.
It is it not Apple, he has a blind hatred for things, even when he hasn't tried the product out even once. - Jebral, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20It's not a false promise, just a broken one. It makes me sad, too, because I still can't find a Wii.
- HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9No, no they're not. They're saying to DESREGARD the statement that they'd sell over 1 mil Wiis. That means that statement != true.
- J3yrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@totoro:
Oh *****! You mean you have to leave your house? - dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Because Nintendo recognizes potential problems and attempts to fix then instead of lie about them. For example, the recent breaking of straps on Wiimotes, Nintendo has now replaced the strap with a much thicker version as well as letting people call them up and ask for a replacement.
The thing about PR is that a bad event is always really a two-edged sword. Use it correctly, and you can turn bad PR into good PR for your company. Do nothing about it like Sony sometimes does and it only makes things worse. - stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9And I can't find a single nunchuck in Austin!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8at least we wont get shot over a wii :)
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10The backlash against Sony is a cumulative effect. When people complained about Sony not meeting their targets they were really mad about a lot of other things too. Nintendo, on the other hand, has generally been exceeding expectations lately.
- Guard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The title makes it sound like they can't ship 1M wiis in the US.
The article suggests against shipping "much more than 1M" (i.e. the 2M goal).
Title is misleading. Anyone know how many they've sold in the US so far? - jwasko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah...but this could mean that they have shifted manufacturing to produce more NTSC/PAL Wii and fewer US Wii. NOT that they're repackaging Wii.
Alternatively: what makes a Wii NTSC/PAL instead of American? Could they just erase the American firmware ans replace it with the NTSC/PAL firmware? - sworoc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Nintendo will still sell as many units as they would have otherwise, they are just redistributing their manufacturing efforts. This is actually a smart move, even if North America doesn't care about the rest of the world, which we don't. Ultimately, Nintendo will have a stronger global market, and when more games are made for Wii since it covers a larger demographic of gamers worldwide, the patient Wii'ers wiill wiin.
Truly, those that wait until the system gets the kinks worked out, a la firmware updates, larger game and accessory availability, and price reductions, will benefit the most. - Anth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The situation now seems better than it was at launch. I can find Wiimotes, nunchucks and classic controllers now (this week) whereas I couldnt before.
Nintendo does seem to have supply chain issues here. I've noticed the amount of Wiis sold going down every week since launch and it seems like they just cant get them here. I dont know how they're distributed to Europe (over land through Asia? air? around Africa?), but with the US its just over the pacific and then through customs at Long Beach (most likely). - jcrewyayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5they'll sell more than a million... fer sure
- Maynza, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I found out when they were selling them in my area, and showed up about 5 hours early. The store had 8 and I was 4th in line, there were still two spots in line about 1 1/2 hours before the store opened.
If you want one bad enough you can get them no problem. - jobobshishkabob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Look who's in stock."
Thats only because they've been out an entire year before the others... i dont think we will see the same stock issues when the Wii or the PS3 hit their 1 year marks. - bones09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I had a preorder with jcpenny.com that was supposed to ship on the 5th of December. On around the 7th, I got a call from them saying that my preorder was cancelled because they didn't have enough consoles. I called back (they had left a message) and the CS rep told me that they had to call 1200 people to cancel preorders because their supplier was unable to supply the full amount of consoles they had offered jcpenny. She said they would be getting no more consoles by christmas. I also just found an email in my inbox containing the following message:
Due to a systems error you may have received an email message telling
you that your order for the Nintendo Wii would be shipped on or before
1/31/07.
That message was inaccurate. We are unable to get a commitment from the
supplier for any further merchandise and your order has been cancelled.

Really sucks - if I had known it'd be cancelled, I would've been out looking earlier. - fall7612, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5We don't know why that statement was retracted. It may be that they don't want to characterize availability in that fashion. It may be they can't meet their target. It's unclear at this point.
- yushi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not to be a stickler, but PAL is 25 fps (not 32 fps) and NTSC is 29.97 fps. :)
- drgnmstrnik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I think this is a bad interpretation of the statement since "well more than a million Wiis will be available in stores" would imply that an additional million will be shipped before the years end (on top of the 200k that has already shipped). Note that the article also only mentions YESTERDAY's comment and not the general 1 million statment in general.
- marm0t, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This isn't anything to cry about like its the end of the world. Wah wah... suck it up and wait like the rest of the world. So what if they don't ship 1mil by the end of the year, they were hopeful that they would and it might not happen, that's life. Nintendo had a phenomenal launch with more systems than any of its competitors, and from the looks of it they will continue to sell more than their competitors. Cant wait until early next year? Tough *****.
- podgey22, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6>> People just vomit words and then hit submit.
LOL!! - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Anth, WHERE ARE THE WIIMOTES??
Nothing online-do I actually have to go into an actual store to get one? :( - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5So much for being able to "walk into any store before Christmas and just pick up a Wii" (not Nintendo's words, but the words of dozens (hundreds?) of diggers before launch). I managed to get one from Costco's first (and only) shipment received, and I have friends and neighbors looking frantically for a Wii with no luck.
It's sad that Nintendo and Sony are giving Microsoft a free pass in their quest for utter domination of yet another technology market. Though after spending many hours playing the Wii since launch, I feel pretty good about its chances dominating this console generation. It's all about the gameplay (oh, and the price). :)
Nintendo: ship more units, and pronto! - ethicalhacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If Digg spread as fast as the Wii the entire world would be a registered user.
- gbarger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ebay
- theXenon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't really care. I got mine this morning... of course, I had to stand in line overnight in -24C weather, but 'tis a small price to pay to be able to give a Wii away for Christmas.
- swoopdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The computer rotting your brain is probably due to the passive use for it. Make your computer challenge you. I completely agree with the sentiment about TV though.
- iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7No no no... you mean HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLL NAAAAAAAWWWWWWWW.
- theXenon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I stood in line for 8 hours. (2am to 10am)
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you xbox360 fans are funny. Look, if xbox 360 wanted to win, it would open up Live as a free service, turn voice chat into a paid service, and remove gamerankings.
One, voice chat improves, less asshats vying for gamerankings, and you will have something to answer Sony and Ninty's free matchmaking service.
No one likes to pay for online multiplayer. No one.
And Wii Sports is a helluva lot more killer app than Gears of War. I only bought mine cuz i saw a whole family play Wii Sports. And one of them hit the other in the head. I laughed for minutes! Brought it home and the family had a blast. PS3 and Xbox360 can't do that. - jobobshishkabob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had to stand in line for 2 hrs for mine... got it on the Sunday after black friday...
- uberlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Anth
Where are they manufacturing them?
It wouldn't be Japan... China? You seem to know where they are shipping them from... - KeefTM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got to Target last Sunday at 6:00 AM. Thanks to two kids talking to all the cars that pulled up, everyone agreed to wait in our cars till 7, then go wait in line. At 7:25 a rep came out and handed us all tickets, and I went back in my car to wait till 8. So I got my Wii with about 25 mins of waiting in line. Not too bad. I did my research on the internet before I just randomly went to stores.
That all being said, I do know others who really want one, but they're not going to buy it until they can walk into a store and get one. Nintendo better ship more units soon, and stop talking about "end of year shipments". People aren't going to care about the units shipped between Dec 26 to 31... - tatinthehat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought I heard somewhere that Nintendo had a manufacturing plant for Wiis (specifically in New York?).
Either way, I agree that it's a bit more complicated to move that much product equally across the country. - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sony needs to be careful, eventually people will get their hands on a PS3 and find out it's simply a PS2 with more polygons that, while amusing, does not make gaming more fun or innovate, but is pretty much the same ol' experience for the last 10 or even 20 years zzzzzz...
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Where the hell are the extra WiiMotes? Plenty of Nunchuks available, but no WiiMotes! grrrr.
- tatinthehat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I managed to find ONE wiimote at an EB right when they opened. They've been selling like hot cakes.
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not really that they aren't getting them, but stores are deciding to stockpile them up. As it gets much closer to the week before Christmas, they are going to use the Wii-craze to get people into their store and hopefully buy other products too, just like Black Friday.
- uberlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I went to my target, they had four wiimotes -but no nunchucks
