- seanthebond, on 10/12/2007, -4/+88Nintendo themselves are not going to make violent videogames. They would love if other companies made those type of games for the Wii on their own.
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+74"Maybe they will go back to 2D overhead for the Wii version"
I know the Wii is not the most powerful console, but geez that is a disrespectful statement - DocBoss, on 10/12/2007, -4/+50Uh, the Wii is more powerful than the PS2 or the Xbox. Any GTA game they put on the wii would look better than any GTA game thats come out yet, (although not as good as a ps3 or 360 game).
- swrostmore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38what are you speaking?/?? The Ps2 GTA games are the reason this series is so popular!
- Intrepion, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38digging this will make it happen, right?
RIGHT?
/dugg - WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36but the bat control will be awesome.
- Schrammie, on 10/12/2007, -20/+50This just after Miyamoto said at GDC that they weren't going to follow the trend of 'violent' games. Looks like there differences of opinion between Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Japan.
- Renton, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2913 year old boys will continue to buy GTA games no matter what, simply because it contains hookers and boobies.
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24IIRC Miyamoto was talking about not changing the style of their first party games too much. They've been very interested in getting as many third party developers as possible after the relative lack of support for N64 and GC.
They'd be stupid not to try and get GTA anyway. Three of the top 4 most sold games in the US are GTA games. http://www.vgcharts.org/atotals.php - dagobah77, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25"Actually the PC is the reason GTA is so popular, hell thats where it got its start."
Wrong. GTA didn't grow to be the mega hit it is today until GTA III showed up on the PS2. - Detritus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Schrammie's statement wasn't true, it is an entirely out of context misrepresentation of what Miyamoto was up to. He was talking about broad appeal games and that his personal design philosophy (which he was sharing at GDC because that is the forum for doing such things) includes making games that his wife enjoys.
Prior to GDC it has already been confirmed that the 2 most violent video games in production are both headed for the Wii; Manhunt 2 and No More Heros (which the developer promises to be more violent than Manhunt 2). The Gamecube got railed as a kiddy console for good reason, but remember it had Resident Evil 4 and Killer 7. - swrostmore, on 10/12/2007, -16/+31wii GTA would be yet another graphically inferior port with tacked-on motion sensing controls. Does the wii really need more of those?
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I wonder what the Hot Coffee mod would be like on the Wii?
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Rockstar had better put GTA on the Wii. Miyamoto my have forgotten that they have hired the most dangerous, violent man in the industry (Reggie Fils-Aime) to run Nintendo of America. If I were Rockstar I'd be afraid of getting my ass kicked and my name taken.
- P373Y, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11i need to stop reading the comments
- Jeffler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11The wii has some decent memory and CPU power. And as for the hard drive, if Nintendo is serious, we could see External support coming.
- RiskyChris, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"Actually the PC is the reason GTA is so popular, hell thats where it got its start."
GTA 1&2 were tadpoles in the pond compared to the CRUSHING juggernaut (bitch) of the GTA 3 series. The reason the games are popular are because of 3, period, end of story. GTA needed the third dimension to thrive -- one of the few examples of games that genuinely were constrained by 2D gameplay.
Edit: Bloody hell, this should've been a reply up above. Well, c'est la vie. - heilig, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8please bring back the jesus bus.
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I would love to beat virtual hoes.
- TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6it will probably be related in the way that liberty city stories relates to gta3. not uber graphics but still a pretty good game
- sameagain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6is a hardcore gamer someone who doesn't like to have fun and experiment with new ways to play video games? if so, then you're right - the Wii isn't aimed at 'hardcore' gamers. It's aimed at people.
- krakkinem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I would not call Nintendo "kiddie." They've traditionally been the more "family friendly" company, true, but there have always been violent and adult-oriented games on Nintendo systems, like the Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat franchises, for example. Besides, who says games that are happy, colorful, and non-violent are only for kids?
- grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This article refers to an interview hold at the end of 2006, this is not news and already well known. Beside that, it really doesn't sound like they are "pushing" much for GTA, "...it is now up to the third party publisher...". If they really would care they would simply pay them for a Wii exclusive GTA title, just like everybody else is doing it when they want to make sure that third party actually ports games to their platform.
- casta, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10@TimDigg
Look at this for a nintendo themed GTA: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeXvYNZxeSg - SatNav, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7@itazura
I never played it myself, but from what I heard the gba version of gta was actually pretty good. And I'm afraid YOUR logic is flawed here. It is unlikely Mario will turn up on th PS* because he's a profitable nintendo property, and nintendo don't want to support a competitor's system. Rockstar are a third party developer - they will (among other considerations) follow market share. If Wii sells well, and PS3 doesn't, they're not likely to stick with sony out of some sense of loyalty - TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This could either be really good or really bad. I'm hoping it's good. When I originally bought my Wii I was hoping Nintendo would bring some good 3rd party games to it.
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8They're not trying to shed their kiddy image, they're trying to sell consoles. And GTA games sell consoles.
- Humm1977, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've been gaming since playing Binatone pong in the late 70's
I love GTA
What was your point again? - echonull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yaknow, another thought: Just because a game has a kid-friendly asthetic, doesn't mean it's not hardcore difficult. The old Mickey Mouse games on the SNES and Genesis were some of the most difficult games of THEIR era.
And I still haven't been able to beat a single Challenge stage in Elebits, though I've gone through the game with only minor trouble. (Buckets? On snowmen?!) - shawnanigans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There is a difference between NOA and NOJ. In Japan, Nintendo's success is because of its kiddie image. In the US, Nintendo's success is in spite of its kiddie image.
- evilinside2020, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i wouldn't mind it on the wii. i don't it would be too much of a downgrade in graphics to port to the wii because gta was never really intense on graphics to begin with. in terms of looks I've always compared gta to those old tony hawk games. they where never awesome but they definitely got the job done.
- echonull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, this is right in line with their policy of expanding their gamer base. No sense in expanding ONLY to casual gamers if you lose the core constituency on the way.
As for the kiddie image, it's going to stay as long as the *majority* of games aren't Killer 7 and GoldenEye and Eternal Darkness and the like. (And those are all on the kiddietastic GameCube....) No More Heroes, Sadness, the Orb... I don't think GTA would find itself too far out of place. - beerunifies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just buy The Godfather: Blackhand Edition already - this game rocks!
- BeckJones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3GTA on Wii would be a sight to see, I'll attest to that.
However, to the idea that Nintendo is trying to ditch it's family oriented image, I must disagree. It doesn't necessarily mean that Nintendo is out to shed their reputation as a company that caters to kids by pushing for GTA. It just means that they realize GTA would sell better than your average Mario game. It's sheer marketing, and in marketing there's not much room for ethics. Especially when the kids who play these games have hardly any idea what 'ethic' means *or they wouldn't love a game where you run around beating people up and banging hookers*. The fact is, American children have changed the family image by loving the idea of hardcore violence. That's alright though, as long as they don't lose their grip on reality.
Here's to kids NOT killing kids, and Nintendo's marketing skill.
By pushing for GTA, Nintendo proves that it is NOT going keep recycling it's old classics, and is instead, looking for new ideas.
Much love to Nintendo. - diggapleeeze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's not impossible. The Godfather for the Wii is an open world with alot of blood, violence and cursing and is rated Mature.
- henrythehorse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wii might be able to handle to original GTA, but there's no way in hell it'll be able to take on GTA4.
- 1Bit, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto_Advance
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"I guess they're really serious about getting rid of the kiddie image that they've acquired?"
If they really want to stop being viewed that way, maybe they shoudlent try to cover everything with digital nerf foam, like pollouting their online system with friend codes or forcing you to sit through several "Health and Safety" warnings EACH TIME you start their system. - Edrick, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6They will if the Wii's market share continues to rise at this incredible pace.
- deaker, on 07/28/2009, -0/+2True. Godfather actually seems to have decent motion controls as well.
You can grab people, smash them against a wall, throw them, beat them with a bat/shovel/pool cue, punch them in several different manners, etc. I just picked it up, and the controls feel pretty nice. It is more fun beating people up then shooting them.
It reminds me quite a bit of what I remember from GTA3. So, GTA can possibly come to Wii, from a control and ratings standpoint. - Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Pixie Dust XD
- bobbagoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2With the Wii set to have the largest install base of any next gen console, I think this would be a no-brainer for T2 and Rockstar Games.
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Miyamoto wants change, but he also always said that as much as they want new video game players and are trying to attract new people, you know -- with blabber like "how fun is this game to watch someone play" and all...
..but he NEVER, EVER for a second dismissed the hardcore gamer. Nobody in Nintendo ever did -- in fact if you read your stories right [and all the time, I guess], you'd know that internally the developers at Nintendo are even more 'hardcore' than you are.
stop thinking Nintendo doesn't care. I'm gonna throw you a curvey one, but what do you think the next evolution will be on Nintendo's next console? That's right, Wii with HD and all the games you think they'll never have. Stop fooling yourself, really...
As far as the story goes, hey... we still haven't seen "San Andreas Stories". hmmm. - Exhaust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's like the Bible of video game digg comments.
Almost need a book mark... - LazyBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2PSP ports ever we come!!
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Serious about getting rid of the kiddy image all while trying to market to my grandmother...im so confused!
- deaker, on 07/28/2009, -0/+1Look above a few posts, the Wii already has 'M' games. And that controls are just like what you imply.
- acebrickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow... and you thought you needed to work out in the game before?? Running from the cops sheds a whole new light on to you basement-dwelling *****, eh?
- craziestmule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you can have mine.
