- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41A genre can't really go out of date, just because it's not popular and the current generation seem to be all about the bleeding edge tech and gameplay being constantly overlooked, doesn't mean they're "out of date."
And don't you dare say adventure games continued being made is in ANYWAY not a good thing.
I'd trade a Monkey Island sequel over a hundred generic FPSs and MMORPGs any day. - foxsynergy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33By all means, let's have another Grand Theft Halo 95 Billion instead.
- Pakman20, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25I HATE G4... i miss tss
- Tsuroerusu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16"We need new ideas, new games;"
Then stop calling the Wii controller a gimmick and use some imagination!
(This is not directed against you Jangles, but all the retards who want new games and call Nintendo's new idea a gimmick at the same time). - snypa, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18GO WII!
- Jangles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13He never said the genre was out of date. He said the games were. I agree with him. It is nice to have old games put on new consoles and all for nostalgic purposes, however the indutry is lacking originality more than anything right now. We need new ideas, new games; not fall back on franchises and games from 10+ years ago.
Thankfully last E3 was a step in that direction for the most part. - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I havent played a new game since Halo... why? because they are boring, so i've ended up playing these old outdated games, because they are fun
- Anagrama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I love how the tag touches on "Syberia" and "Indigo Prophecy" (both available on Xbox), but they say it is Nintendo who will "save" adventure games. Just because Microsoft feels XLA is targeted at a different demographic doesn't mean they don't support the genre in general.
I stand by a statement I made many, many moons ago:
Wait until the console is released before you heap second-coming accolades on it. It just makes you look stupid. - alexp2ad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Out of date... how dare you! The Monkey Island series, day of the tentacle and others are just as fun today as they ever were, even just the other day I played through Monkey Island 2 again, it is so brilliant, there is a depth to the puzzles and a level of humor missing in so many games today.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's scary, people are so emotionally invested in their scarcely informed opinions this console generation that the ensuing flame wars once things actually get released should be epic in scale.
- Alexton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yes absolutely it's a good thing. I mean, these games are great. It's all about whether or not gameplay matters more than graphics, because these games offer one of those two in abundance. Plus, high resolution games aren't that hard to produce when you're talking a background as the primary ingredient. I'd much rather pay 10 dollars for game that takes me a few hours to beat with an original storyline than download the same repetitive action games over and over. Bring on something with brains!
- Alexton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Sadly, Cfur, we don't have "games like Fahrenheit" filling the gap... we pretty much just have Fahrenheit. I mean, Syberia and DreamFall. Have there been any others, really? Like in the last two years, or so? At least compared to the 50,000 WWII shooters out there. :)
- aHellerax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This article really has absolutely nothing to do with the Wii. He just throws out some wild speculation at the very end. Probably only mentioned Wii to get people interested in the article (since hardly anyone cares about adventure games anymore)
That being said, this is a pretty good article on where adventure games are in general at this point in time (For about.com anyway). It just has a misleading title. - mechaboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah I'd love to play games like Fate of Atlantis again seeing as the 40 or so floppy disks that it originally came on are long gone.
- Boor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ahhh About.com is getting the hang of it, if they want to be popular all they have to do is praise the wii in their title, throw in a little " Why Nintendo Will Save Adventure Games, and Not Microsoft", and the rest works itself out. Now ima huge fan of nintendo, but is anyone else getting slightly annoyed at this sort of thing.....
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Reported inaccurate. This is Nintendo fanboy fantasy material. There is nothing special about the Wii that makes adventure games more or less likely. The issues has never been technical, it is (and always has been) market. Don't tell me that the Wii is so much less expensive to develop for than (say) the PC, the real home of this genere. It just comes down to the fact that adventure games are percieved to not sell well, thus aren't developed.
RIP: Sam and Max. - tehpoutine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've been playing The Secret of Monkey Island using the scummvm psp port, also looking at porting freesci to the psp for the following games to work on it also.
* Leisure Suit Larry 2
* Leisure Suit Larry 3
* Police Quest 2
* King's Quest 4
* Hero's Quest / Quest for Glory 1
* Space Quest 3
* The Colonel's Bequest
* Conquests of Camelot
* Codename: Iceman
* Hoyle's Book of Games
* Hoyle's Book of Games 2
Emulators are great. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i'd say that this is just a side effect of a very cheap Dev Kit, and that 99% of these new adventure games will be by indie studios
- danecook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I totally disagree...Syberia I and II are great games and 'Runaway' I feel is a terrific game and they are fairly recent-they just need to make more of them-I'm a throwback to all the classic sierra games (Police Quest, Kings Quest, LSL) and the lucas games-I am currently in the process of playing Monkey Island 3 again simply because its a great game-so saying they are outdated I would disagree with-we just need more of them.
- Stwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would love to play games like Hero's Quest and Police Quest again.... I love them dearly.... those were the games that made me the gamer I am today.... They hooked me and I wish I could get something like that again.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There was a reason adventure games died out. Its because there isnt a huge market for them anymore. Indigo Prophecy was really good and so was Shenmue but these days they are the minority. I fail to see how the Wii will manage to bring them back simply because of the remote. Using a mouse is just as easy when it comes to these types of games.
Of course only time will tell if we see a revival of these kinds of games but honestly I thought the Wii was going to introduce us to a new type of gamig, not an old type with a new way of controlling it. - Sukino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://www.telltalegames.com/samandmax/
- cfur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I grew up playing games like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and they were great games, for their time. We now have games like Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy) filling the gap, and doing a good job of it.
Some of the best console games I've played are adventure games. Sitting in the lounge with my flatmates playing Shenmue on the Dreamcast. Everyone got incredibly involved in the story. If the Wii can pull off something like that it'll be a hit. - Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Imagine if they had made the Da Vinci Code game an adventure game, it could of been amazing, but 2K decided to make it an action game, with fighting (There was little to no fighting in that story), and all that other generic stuff you see in most movie (In this case book) based videogames.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Agreed.
His only arguments are that the Wii pointer is like a mouse, and that Microsoft has said that Xbox live will focus on short attention span games, which by some very busted logic means Nintendo's online market won't be the same in that regard. - TheFoppishRhino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@alexp2ad:
I totally and wholeheartedly agree with you. Actually, I am playing Sam & Max as we speak (er, type).
Personally, I loved the fact that Curse of Monkey Island was hand drawn and animated. It added so much character. While 3D adventure games can be done very well (Grim Fandango, Indigo Prophecy, etc.) I would like to see another adventure game in that 2D style. - Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"We need new ideas, new games; not fall back on franchises and games from 10+ years ago."
It's important to understand that game developers want exactly the same thing - new ideas and new kinds of games. The problem is that as games have gotten more complex, the cost of trying out new ideas has increased to the point where it's simply too risky. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"out of date"
hah, classic adventure games to the gaming world is what simpsons is to the cartoon industry
its witty, funny, and full of references to movies and jokes in the past that people of all ages would understand. i'll be damned if you could find an MMORPG or FPS game like this these days - legend166, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To this very day, The Curse of Monkey Island is my favourite game, graphics-wise. The art and environments in that game were amazing. I'd take this: http://www.dcevolution.net/nfpicturepro/albums/userpics/10004/ScummVM01.jpg over generic-FPS-with-big-marine-holding-massive-gun #364 any day of the week.
- afeitarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well, the 'speech' version of Fate of Atlantis came out on cd...just go get one on ebay. That's what I did for KQVI and the Longest Journey.
- joshlewis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@estivir who said "I'd trade a Monkey Island sequel over a hundred generic FPSs and MMORPGs any day."
At the risk of sounding overly-zealous... AMEN! - Yokai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When I said that, I meant that the game play style seems to be dead. I wouldn't mind adventure games if they were actualy more controlling with environments, meaning you can fully control your player but the point of the game is not just shooting everything you say. But the old "point and click" games are just so out-dated. Unless they do something that really impresses me, then I will agree that the genre is not dead.
- Snuffkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3'Games like Escape From Monkey Island have helped prove that quality adventure titles can exist on a console.'
I love adventure games, but I stopped taking the article seriously after that. I can't think of anyone I know that talks of Escape from MI in a positive light. Also, the list of freeware games is very odd, as it skips 5DaS, which is not only one of the best, but one of the most well-known. http://fullyramblomatic.com/games.htm - staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@Tsuroerusu
"In American English, a gimmick is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries. However, the special feature is typically thought to be of little relevance or use. Thus, a gimmick is a special feature for the sake of having a special feature."
There is no need to get offended. Some people are assuming that the Wii controller will change gaming as we know it today. Other people see it as a temporary solution. If it does turn out that the controller is limited in scope and design, then the gimmick claims hold true. But to be fair it would take at least a year or two down the line to see what come out of devs for the wii. - smee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm a huge adventure game fan, but i really don't want to play them on a console. Monkey Island 3 was perfect for me, i love the click and point interface, not so much with MI4. As much as I love adventure games, I don't know that I'd play them on a wii even if it were available.
- HsoKinees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1one game that I would really love to see appear on the Wii would be Broken Sword.. one of the old, traditional 2d/cartoony point-and-click games! it would interface great with the wiimote and the Wii should not have any problems loading 2d images :)
Bring it on, Broken Sword Thwii! (Three - to my knowledge, there's only 2 2d broken sword games.. I don't class the 3d games as broken sword titles!) - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Viewtiful Joe?
- cave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish they'd bring back the 2D platformer genre, that's the best one IMHO. Nintendo kind of gave t a shot with New Super Mario Bros, but that was waaay too short, and for a handheld. It would really be great to see the genre return to the big consoles. Fans of Guilty Gear know how awesome 2D games can look with modern hardware.
- elpottsy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What do diggers like more, old school Kings quest or Nu-School Zelda?
Seriously, i'm pretty torn over this one, and if this issue dosn't get resolved by bed time i probably wont be able to sleep!!! - afrazkhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
This links nicely to the Long Tail Wired article (which may or may not have been on Digg, I can't remember):
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.10/tail.html
They're pretty much saying the same thing, except that Chris Anderson of Wired seems to understand the bigger picture, and explains why things like this are happening or are about to happen. - anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Every adventure game I ever played ended with me walking aimlessly around a room, not knowing WTF to do, and yelling "***** it".
- Alexton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hero's Quest... Ah yes... I played it first as Quest for Glory, the VGA remake Sierra did way back in the day. Heroes' Quest is the board game I have in my closet, as far as I'm concerned. :)
- afrazkhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Hey! We're still playing Street Fighter II here. Try and be a little more sensitive. - Unicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1estvir for president! adventure games for life!
- ronaldb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Duke Nuke'm Forever? Well, that's more like a game going out of date....
- krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hhmmm sounds like Leisure Suit Larry talk to me.
- afeitarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In addition to the AGS remakes mentioned on the link, there's also some awesome remakes of King's Quest I and II (II is an enhanced one with added (better) storyline, dialogue and characters. Check it out!:
http://www.agdinteractive.com/main.htm - sephiroth965, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Street Fighter anniversary collection man. SWEET
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any old adventure game, easily. They have more character to them. :)
/loads up ScummVM. - afrazkhan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1
You either didn't read the article or don't understand how the virtual console on the Wii works. Think bedroom coders, that's pretty much it in a nutshell.
As you said, "the issues has never been technical" [sic], although I think it should be mentioned that solving the problem of economics without the hardware/software in place to back it up would be fruitless. The issue is indeed about the economics of producing games which don't sell as well as big budget ones.
Read the Long Tail article (http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.10/tail.html) to see how this problem has been solved by digital distribution. Nintendo were really ahead of the game on this one. I'm a great deal more impressed with how they saw this coming than the Wiimote or any of their hardware (though that stuff is all looking cool too;) -
