- WeeklyGeek, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25There are plenty of games that you would enjoy that are more "adult". Lemme list some.
Tetris DS
Metroid Prime Hunters
Brain Age
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
Kirby Canvas Curse
Electroplankton
Trauma Center: Under the Knife
Animal Crossing
The idea that Nintendo is "kiddy" is one that their competetors put on them. When I sit in front of a Gamecube, I don't get embarrassed at the games I am playing if they have bright colors or mario in them. I have fun, because they are fun games. Racing games? Eh. Probably wouldn't work out too well on the DS with the graphical demands of hardcore racing game fans. God of War type games? Playing a third person perspective 3d game on the DS isn't often fun. Metroid does it well, but it is still crampy at times. Get over the fact that you think your friends will call you gay for playing Kirby, and just have fun with it. Tons of games for the DS. Great system. - Trention, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25I tried to resist, I really did. Now I'm going to take my lunch and head out to buy one of these. Looks like most of the suckage has been fixed.
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Opera will be selling a chip with their browser on it so you can use it as a full fledged web broswer. Try googling: Opera Wifi Nintendo DS Lite
- Christophercles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12You need to stop with the mindset that because something looks kiddy its not fun. In our house we don't have anyone under 20, but we'll play Super Smash Brothers Melee a hundred times over something like Tekken, because in essence, its a much more fun game.
- bwmiller72, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I hope they really did improve on the DS with the "Lite". Looking to buy one as a present for someone soon. But, I have to say, I have an original DS, and I have always been quite pleased with it. I think it came out much better than the first Game Boy Advance in particular.
Does hurt a bit not to have the brighter screen. Glad they improved that! - dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11What do you need out of a game to make it adult anyway? Oogling the opposite sex? Worrying over taxes? Calculating interest rates? Golf? Redecorating your spare bedroom with your wife?
I'll take an adventure game. I mean, so long as we're not a giant yellow marshmallow peep battling the "ooga-boogas" I think most games don't qualify as kiddy. If you think Mario's kiddy, well, too bad for you. I embrace my inner child, and avoid the schmaltzy attempts at marketing (Neopets) or the obviously not for you games (Barbie's Magical Horse Dream...) and I seem to do okay. Nothing wrong with mario, tetris, or brain age.
And honestly, you're an adult playing with a video game system. You lose all street cred as a mature adult when you're seen playing with a video game system. Our society is still a ways off from adults playing video games as being accepted.
Also, we've also got the PSP. That has a browser right now, remember? Works just fine, if the DS is just too kiddy for your own sake. - jwoelich, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I've found that people that complain about things being too "kiddie" are usually just beyond the age where they'd be considered a kid...yet are still stuck in that phase where they care about how others percieve them.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I can tell you, as an owner of the DS lite, and the brother of an owner of the first gen DS, the lite is much sleeker and feels much less chintzy than the first gen model. Nothing against the 1st gen, but the lite just looks and feels much much better, and the screens on it are phenomenally bright.
Otherwise, however, its exactly like the DS, functionality wise. If your only beef with the original DS was the backlight, and you need (like, NEED) something brighter, pick up a lite. If you don't, stick with the first gen. - Araya213, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Nintendo brought the "kiddy" rep on themselves by censoring the original Mortal Kombat, but they made up for it (They had to, the playstation was just around the bend). But I've found that the kiddy games are much more fun and the bloody games sacrifice gameplay for polygons or artwork. BTW, I love the new DS!! It's alot of fun for a guy who's never played DS. Metroid with the stylus is the best control scheme for a CONSOLE ever! You can't aim with no analog stick!! Wish opera would hurry up with the broswer!
- pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11One thing I found interesting about the brighter screen is that I never heard anyone complain about the old one being dim. It's nice to see a company innovate a feature without being hounded about it just because they can.
- eleven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10You = Flamebait = No one is listening.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I've only once wished I had a brighter screen. I was in an airport and the only chair I could find had the sun behind me shining directly on the screen so I couldn't see some of the darker areas of the game. I mostly want it because I'm a sucker for sleek design I bought my GBA SP for the same reason but I could justify that for the backlight and the clamshell design for protection. DS already has backlight and clamshell although adjustable brightness would be nice and it look so much cooler. The only real gripe I've had with the DS so far is that it doesn't look very cool at all, it's too big.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I've noticed that all systems that do redesigns sell a lot more units. NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, Gameboy, GBA, DS all redesigned, all top sellers of their generation. So which is cause and which is effect? The exceptions to the rule seem to be Sega systems, Genesis and Sega CD.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yeah, I never owned a DS, but I knew I had to have the DS Lite after playing one. The screen is bright as a mofo and not that much bigger than an iPod.
- INHUMANITY, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Do we need one so soon? I had no interest in the first DS. Bought one yesterday and am very happy. So yeah, I think it was smart they released a new one that didn't look like Tiger's lame attempts at handheld gaming.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6In addendum, the problems he mentioned with his unit (the moving touch screen, stuck pixels), I did not have on my system at all. Whether my system is the norm or the variant is yet to be known, but IMO, a moving lower screen seems like it would be a manufacturing problem and if that were the case, it seems like it would be a widespread issue. I think this reviewer just got a unit from a disgruntled UPS guy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"The other issue is that the bottom screen seems to be floating in the system case, not held down tight like the first-generation DS. It doesn't seem to affect anything; the touch screen is as precise as always, but the first time I press down on the screen after opening the unit, it seems to move down a touch. You can also move the screen very slightly up and down if you press on it rhythmically. I have no idea why the screen assembly would be loose, but it looks like the screen is placed into the unit from the top, instead of the shell enclosing the screen on the top as it does with the DS Fat."
Weird - Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I got two of these yesterday, they are indeed a good deal and well worth the money. The article pretty much sums up everything I could say. DS Lite gets another A+ from me.
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7wonder how much are they going to charge for it... 249$ ? 299$ ?
- jwoelich, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7But will it still use media formats that no one gives a crap about?
"Yeah right, you morons are so caught up in this notion that Sony is copying Nintendo it's funny. "
Probably because it's true? - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4its actually supposed to have a built-in camera and also 4GB of flash storage built-in
and it already supports a microphone - mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Dude Nintendo was the first in the portable gaming market, not Sony. Whos copying who now? PS1 wasnt the first in the market either. So whos the moron now, moron?
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That's usually because the units cost less for the consumer. More people are likely to buy a $129 PStwo than a $300 PS2.
The redesigns have always been cheaper. The $99 PSX was a bargain compared to the original. Same for the SNES/Genesis.
Us early adopters are the ones who ultimately pay for it in the end. sigh.
This was my second DS, after being VERY let down at the launch selection. I bought a PSP, suffered through that long enough to where some decent PORTS came out on it. Now the DS is out with a good variety of games, so I dove back in. Sudoku and strategy games eat up my time like crazy on a portable, so it was a no brainer. - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I definitely agree. If the submitter had checked out the Lite vs the original, he wouldn't have to ask a question like "Do we really need another Nintendo DS so soon after the release of the first one?" because the answer is definitely YES.
- apetrie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4..but he mentioned those things in the article and essentially said what you did. Its great, has lots of improvements but has its flaws and isn't perfect. =)
- OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10Are you really an adult? You don't sound like one.
- Christophercles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Edit- I should have mentioned - The stylus on the Lite is x1000 better than the original DS. It was one of the things that s**t me the most about the original and finally its fixed. Games like Ouendan and Metroid deserve the new stylus. So if you love Metroid, or haven't gotten around to playing it yet, trade your old DS in.
- Bronevaya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4resident evil, metroid, ff3 (when it comes out), advanced wars, trauma, point blank. these are just some that I can think of off the top of my head.
- ArekRashan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@thunderhammer:
If you think that your girlfriend is going to respect hearing "Blam! Blam! Aaargh! Explode!" from your DS more than "boingaboingaboinga", you're probably in for a shock. You should ask her - but if the root of the problem is that *you* feel awkward about having "boingaboinga" coming from you DS, you're probably not rated "M" yet. - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5enough with the arguement... its all about personal preference...
maybe you think cartoony characters games are fun, and i think realistic games are fun?
are either of us wrong? ...NO - lokai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you are wondering whether or not migrating to the new hardware is worth it at all, I picked up a DS Lite yesterday; I will never go back to the old DS unless I have absolutely no choice. The controls are so much more responsive, and the subtle layout changes are all for the better. The screen, of course, is perhaps the best part: Much brighter, allowing one to actually play outside of the confines of shade during daylight hours. The new stylus makes gaming sessions quite a bit more comfortable, as well.
- nasteratu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I just purchased mine last night, it is a beautiful little gadget. I never owned an original DS, it seemed very gimmicky, but they have released some very good games for it, so this time I couldn't resist, and I am not at all disappointed.
- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Difference is:
Every other system has huge hardware and software improvements, as opposed to the way EA builds game with the "we'll have people pay to be our beta testers, fix the problem and re-release it as a new game"
Sucks for everyone with the original DS... - fohf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3and a bunch of 12 year old trolls talking *****
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wait, you're saying you JUST bought a DS Lite (as in probably yesterday), and you're already complaining about the lack of games? I mean, I'm ADD as anyone else, but good Lord.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I never bothered with the DS because to be honest, it was butt-ugly. Now that I've bought a Lite, I'm amazed. I tried out a PSP for about a week and returned it, because as cool as it was, I never found myself really wanting to play it.
I'm suprised what a difference a touch screen and a dual display makes, but it really does. The Lite looks sexy - it looks like a tiny iBook (sorry, MacBook), and I find myself carrying it everywhere.
Since I didn't have a DS before, I don't know if all the little touches like instant-sleep when you close the lid (even in the middle of a Mario jump) were there before, but who cares, they're great.
If I had a javascript-capable browser on this thing, it would be the only gadget I'd carry. - scottauth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I never hear TOO much about this game, but if you want one that takes advantage of the DS go pick up...
Kirby's Canvas Curse
Such a fun game, kudos to Nintendo once again! - jedimasta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3agreed. I honestly all but vowed not to get a DS, but after getting more hands on time with it and then seeing the improvements in the Lite, dropping 129 was a no brainer. My wife and I are Tetris mad and Brain Age is easily the most fun I've ever had doing math problems.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Mmmmm.... DS swapping, sexy!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"Do we really need another Nintendo DS so soon after the release of the first one?"
Yes. Oh god yes. The buttons on the first DS were small and not "soft" enough. Very easy to get callouses on your thumb. Plus, I suspect the DS lite is what it was supposed to look like but was rushed to compete with the PSP. - eleven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yep. DS lite = DS but smaller.
Also it's nicer looking and has 2 fantastic screens. More people will own one and the whole platform will see more development. Who doesn't want to see more development of this platform? I want Opera DS now and I would like a decent media player (made for ds lite) that I can put my podcasts on to. Also for the geek in me I would like someone to make a cart with Linux so I can ssh into my machines ;) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wasn't replying to anyone you fruit.
Zetsurin cruises all the Nintendo related topics and flames like a gay guy in San Fran. You'd think he was Phil Harrison. - Araya213, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't forget about fun games and no load time. I'm a PSP owner and just bought the DS lite and I can honestly say that as a gaming platform, DS wins by far. I never enjoyed playing a psp game with the exception of GTA. All the games for the PSP seemed like mini versions of a real game that never got made. And now even the developers seem to have given up, the PSP is a failed system, expect to see a sharp decline in the already low number of games that are made for it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I think everyone is in agreeance that the DS Lite is cool and zetsurin is a ***** momo.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://www.kotaku.com/images/2006/06/subway606meetup_%2851%29.jpg
Heh, I imagine he's in there somewhere, slumming it up with the other fatties trying to look cool with their skinned PSPs. - Everman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I put my original DS and Lite side by side, the Lite's screen is so much brighter, I couldn't believe it.
The buttons have better feedback, and being lighter is nice. - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2DS Lite = GOOD!
I never bought a DS, despite its cool features, because it was a large, ugly beast. After I learned about the DS, I bought mine at 8am on release day, and *love* it so far. - ryllharu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If I didn't already own a DS Fat and have a blast with it, I'd pick up a Lite in a heartbeat. I've had only one problem with the screen brightness, and I actually like the fat ugliness of it. (I still like the old fatty GameBoy.) If I ever need a replacement, I'll pick up a Lite. Until then, I see no reason to upgrade.
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2nope, i think you are a moron. his last comment actually has merit. Also you do not know how to use the reply button...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have a DS phat and was really interested in the DS Lite until I got to try it out. The screens are definitely nicer (day and night difference), but the other changes that nintendo weren't as nice. I was hoping that the new d-pad and buttons would be an improvement, but after playing with a demo system, I can say that isn't the case. The d-pad feels very spongy and made playing mario (the only demo) more difficult. I didn't get to try the new stylus, but having a thicker one would really be nice.
