- pokemogu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41I got my copy today, and I regret to say that this browser is really stressful.
Yes, I know 66Mhz CPU is doing a best job but I don't suggest you to browse Digg from this browser.
And most important, I cannot post any comments from DS Browser.
Here is a proof. The code image doesn't appear so the submit button doesn't get activated.

However you can digg stories so that's the only thing you can post. - pokemogu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Oops, can I correct my comment above?
You cannot even digg stories!
When I hit "digg it" button twice, I got "you've already dugg this story" alert
and I thought I dugg the story but that wasn't reflected to the Digg server!
(Yes, I refreshed the page and a number of diggs is not incremented)
So why this happens?
It seems XMLHttpRequest, which is the most important AJAX method, is not available for DS Browser.
Because of this, you can't dynamically scroll Google Maps and Digg Spy just doesn't scroll informations.
If you want to take care of this browser at your webpage, you'd better generate DS optimized page.
(It's UserAgent name is "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSID 6.0; Nitro) Opera 8.50 [xx]". "Nitro" was codename of DS)
However, I don't think this browser will spread worldwide. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25I was really hoping that the browser would be quick and provide an enjoyable experience. There are a few Nintendo Hotspots close to where I live, including one at my University and it would have been great to be able to just get my DS out to check emails and things.
I sure hope that this thing is compatible with all the other Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection hotspots.
The way this video makes it look would probably annoy me - jumpy. I thought I left all that behind when I got rid of my 750MHz tower! - wonginator1221, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22unclog those freakin' tubes
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Very informative video. Answered a lot of questions about speed (slow), Flash (no) and Gmail (yes). Might not be the ideal browser, but still could be useful when you're out and need to check e-mail.
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23Big deal. Who isn't gonna use this solely for porn anyway?
- Etheo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I was really disappointed when I hear that the load time is bad and you can't even use some basic AJAX. I knew from day 1 it wouldn't support video, sound, and flash, and I was over that (even though I was still really disappointed).
Now it looks like I'm not gonna get a DS browser anytime soon. The functionality needs to be tweaked to impress me once more. I really hope the gmail chat on Gmail works. Would it be possible for someone to check this for me please? Thank you! - pintong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Just a quick correction: it *will* work with IM services through eBuddy:
MSN - http://mob.ebuddy.com
Yahoo! - http://moby.ebuddy.com
AIM - http://moba.ebuddy.com
It may also work through the regular http://ebuddy.com but I have no way to check it myself.
I'm putting together a "portal" for the DS at http://ds.hansv.com/ with search fields for things you might want on the go - eBay, Wikipedia, IMDb, etc. Slick interface coming soon :) - SFX112, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20Oh nos! The DS browser isn't as spiffy good as I hoped it would be! How will I ever download an internet on my DS?
- hexix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10He also stated that he was doing it, and then told you the exact loading times at the end of the video. Not really sure what more you expected him to do other than force you to sit through an extra 6 minutes of nothing.
- josh93752, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10the homebrew doesn't work that well either.
- Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12It needs a bigger tube...
- biofusion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Disappointing how slow it is. I'll pick it up when it hits the states, but I'll only use it for quick Gmail checks or so it appears. It's a shame how much potential the browser could have, except the DS just can't support some of the higher demanding tasks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I don't particularly see the point in trying to use this to access sites like digg, etc. I guess if you don't have a laptop and are really desperate...
However, there is a lot of room for sites made specifically for the DS that will simplify things a bit and speed it up. Sites could include basic e-mail checking, rss feeds, etc. This would could in handy at places with open hot spots and you don't have a laptop on you. A tiny ds lite is a million times better than using a full laptop just to do basic online tasks. - Dracker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The GBA cart is a RAM expansion. The DS only has 4MB built-in; not enough to view some pages with full images without doing a lot of swapping.
And neiltc13: Keep in mind the DS has 2 processors: 66 MHz ARM9 and 33 MHz ARM7 Processors. Even Your 750MHz tower would crush it in web browsing, that is, if it had no operating system, 8 MB (assuming the gba cart adds another 4mb? no official word) RAM, and 2 256x192 screens.
Also, all official games (guess I can't call Opera a game though) uses the same wifi code. Therefore, your same WFC settings that worked or didn't work for mario kart ds, animal crossing wild world, metroid prime hunters, tetris ds, etc. will work or not work with opera just as well or badly. - Zodzilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@trunkster
Your comment of "no digg, no buy" makes no sense to me. I can understand that you wouldn't buy the DS browser, but not giving a Digg to a competent link to a good video just confuses me. If the link is interesting or informative, you should digg it, not because you have some sort of grudge against what it's talking about. - rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Hopefully they can upgrade the browser to fix these problems. Can anyone comment on its upgradability?
- felyduw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@Etheo: It doesn't support xmlhttprequest so it's highly unlikely it will work with gtalk embedded on gmail.
- Gardenhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It was the basic browser mode it looked like, which doesn't require AJAX. At least thats what I think.
- Etheo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Don't get your hopes up, the browser seem to be already pushing the DS' capability quite hard already. And I highly doubt they have integrated the ability to download patches to upgrade a game card... More likely they'll just release a newer version of the Browser, but still don't expect to see Flash, it'd be too taxing. Sounds, maybe. Videos, probably not.
- pornel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's the full version of Opera 8 engine (not Opera Mini), so it should support AJAX just as the desktop does.
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Some people ported the "Lynx" web browser to PSP, and it's much faster than the included Sony web browser. Looks like the PSP wins on one front (at least so far).
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There is an html version of gmail you all know
http://m.gmail.com/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Gmail ran fine on the video, I haven't seen a definitive statement on AJAX
- swimmingbird67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i don't know if i would buy it if it takes that long to load.
- trib4lmaniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Nope, nothing on the DS supports WPA. Its the hardware.
- alephsmith, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12The obligatory 'tube' comments really do get tiresome.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7the psp browser is better, its faster has sound/video/flash its free and it gets updated almost everytime the firmware does. (ver 2.71 supp flash)
- Trams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The slow load times and the scrolling speed is just killing it for me. Man I was pretty excited about this. I still am, but the slowness just blows. I don't even want to imagine google maps on that.
- pintong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5How about DSOrganize?
http://www.dragonminded.com/?loc=ndsdev/DSOrganize
Or the upcoming Organizer Plus?
http://www.planetgamecube.com/gameArt.cfm?artid=1341 - pornel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Lynx might be faster, but web is no fun without images, CSS and JS.
In Opera you can disable images, and I think that should help a lot here (still having huge advantage, like AJAX support for GMail). - Dracker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Elxx: If you're gonna go all "Lynx for PSP" on me, you've got another thing coming.
retawq - another text based browser - has been ported to DSLinux.
PSP isn't the only handheld you can homebrew you know! - Lazyboy0172, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7i concur with all of the above.
the psp browser wasnt the best for scrolling or typing (to say the least), but it was free, supported much more and was a bit faster than what this guy tells it.
For 30 dollars you might as well buy a game. you shouldnt have to spend 30 bucks to use a limited browser where you can check your email or (if you have time) check out digg.
and dont most cell phones sync with your email now anyway? - somesthetic, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13I like how he cut out the loading times for the heavier graphic websites.
thats keepin' it real. - noeljohnhoward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5i was going to get this but now im not.
Im not going to waste my time trying to load pages, and with no meebo support, super lame!
gah - theanticrust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is really disappointing, although I was expecting this. I had a PSP and dabbled a bit with the internet browser only to find the load times slow, the usability to be painful and often it would not be able to load sites due to a lack of memory. Now that I have a DS lite, I doubt I'll pick up the browser when it comes stateside unless it's really cheap.
Although I hope this doesn't discourage Nintendo from developing more applications for the DS. I would love to have an email client and Voip. - pokemogu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OK, I tested several XMLHttpRequest demos and they didn't work either.

Someone claims that it does work because it does work on GMail.
Unfortunately I don't have GMail account (somebody invite me!) so I can't confirm that
but someone pointed that GMail is working in a non-AJAX mode on DS Browser might be the truth. - Etheo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As much as I want to agree with you, with a processor clock speed of 67Mhz, I really wouldn't think Flash is a good idea...
- kdingo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would love to see more insight on how well handwriting input works (especially inputting URLs). Undoubtedly you can input kana characters and change them to kanji, but I don't see much on latin characters. Otherwise this a very good and informative review.
- NatsuMatto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wow, that really didn't impress me, and with a cost of $30 or so, it seems like a total rip off. If you watch the entire video, he mentions that sites like Digg and Kotaku take 1.5 - 2 minutes (!!!) to load, and that CNN.com took 3 (!!!!) minutes to load. Using the "magnifier" window in the two screen mode seemed to be rather pokey as well... not a lot of smooth scrolling. Hell, the PSP browser is better than that and it's free... true, the PSP is horrid for trying to input text, so I guess it's a trade off. Still, the worst thing is that because this is a cart based browser, the only "upgrades" you will get would be to buy a new cartridge.
Does the DS browser support "wap" mode? That would make it a lot more functional and less graphically intense... I use that on the pockepc version of the Netfront browser occasionally. - dmoore764, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Digg.com will survive without your diggs while you surf with the DS. But when you get back to your PC, you should digg extra hard
- Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3A waste for a lot of people as the DS doesn't support WPA (or at least the browsing software doesn't).
If you have a PDA style phone, better off spending the money on that. - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3In the year of YouTube, I think it's pretty lame that this thing doesn't have a Flash Player in it.
As for slow load times? dog, it's a wireless handheld device. did he even have the options turned down so that he could browse sensibly given the platform he was using?
Also the reviewer didn't seem to know a lot of about the internet itself, siince he kept blaming opera for not supporting things, when it is the actual web designers who make their pages for internet explorer and maybe firefox/safarii, but not opera. or, better put, not for everybody. - pintong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is a mode for Latin character input (look at the top screenshot):

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4313562333360674178&hl=en - raindog469, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sure I'll end up getting it regardless (I use my phone's built in Netfront web browser from time to time and that really sucks) but I'll be very disappointed if the reports that XmlHttpRequest isn't implemented are true. For them to leave Ajax support out after saying the browser is equivalent to Opera 8.5 or whatever would be a Sony-sized blunder.
I can accept Flash and Java not being in there (the DS is about equivalent to a 10 year old PC, CPU and RAM-wise, and Flash and Java aren't actually part of any web browser anyway) but for it to be anything other than a simple information retrieval program, the DS browser needs to support Ajax. - andydude117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If digg doesn't work on the DS, does it work on the PSP browser?
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The browser dowsn't support it. At least that's what happens on my psp. I guess it would be the same for the ds
- LoopyChew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Zodzilla:
I'm getting the general idea that the OP meant that "if it can't surf Digg, it's not worth the purchase," not "I ain't buying it, so no Digg." - mechaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know I really just want my gaming systems to be good at playing games, and that's one thing Nintendo delivers fairly well. If I can't browse the web or watch movies or brush my teeth with it, I'm not too disappointed.
