- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37a $150 laptop wouldnt have wifi support, a touch screen, a 12 hour battery life, or even a graphics processor thats on-par. it would be 20x bigger, and you wouldnt be able to play any good games on it, etc. etc. im not sure what you're getting at?
this program isnt being made by nintendo, nor is it claiming to be hugely innovative. its a new service brought to the device and will be inexpensive. its innovative for a GAMING SYSTEM to offer this, but everyone is so accustom to the PSP which does everything BUT play good/innovative games, its not much of a shocker - - - apparently.
i would call this the first REAL portable gaming device to have a web browser because the PSP is a ***** PDA - TheGalacticFork, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30This just in, DS actually has good games!
- pdenton, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18first of all, the word is FIRST. second of all, it'd be the first successful portable gaming device to have a web browser.
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I think we all forgot about the N-Gage the day it was released.
I'm still trying to forget... - jack_dt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I dugg this just because of the spelling of the word "broswer"
- allarise, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19a.k.a. the WORST browser on the planet.
and in a world with IE, that's quite a feat. - rawsteak, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12i hate being an american sometimes, you know, when we're being marked as a technologically advanced country, but 90% of us can't be bother to use the technologically advanced spellchecker. No wonder every other country makes fun of our educations system. That, or we're getting so fat, our fingers hits more than one key at a time.
- Aninhumer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7A browser in 256 * 192 with a keyboard? The DS has two screens the bottom one is a touchscreen!
And if you're going to argue that you need the stylus to click, you can have the page on both until you press a button to bring up a virtual keyboard.
(Note: I don't have the browser, nor a DS but if Nintendo didn't think of something like this what were they doing?) - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7i think a cartridge, because it was rumored RAM expansions could be made with the GBA cart to speed up/handle the image load more effectively
- dizzledaking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6And costs 12 times what the DS costs and is much bigger. Anyway, bad attempt to knock the DS as a gaming device.
- jasonisageek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Maybe they were thinking of 'browser' and 'bowser' at the same time and got confused.
- tsar04, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7is this going to be in the form of a ds card or a gba cartridge?
- 83457, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I think the coolest part hasn't even been mentioned. Its baed on Opera
- meechp123, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Education system.
- errorik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5According to the scans displayed on GoNintendo Nintendo Power never mentions a December release... Go Nintendo even says this.
Hopefully that means we get the browser even sooner. - Bega, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7heh, nearly read that as Nintendo DS Web Bowser o.O
- recover82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5When this gets a release, I'll have a reaction similar to this:
http://www.collegehumor.com/movies/1677011/ - MoonKing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8PSP gets too much credit. You're all forgetting about the poor old N-Gage.
- rhino_rampant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This update was not there when I posted it on Digg. Scans were still to be posted.
- allarise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Opera, being a Norwegian company would probably have the most difficulty in developing the japanese version versus the american version using an alphabet much more similar to their own
- allarise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think this is going to be a good purchase when it comes out. I can't speak for PDA browsing experience, it might suck, but then again Opera is this ***** on a full computer. Has anyone used their mobile browsers in any form? How does it stack up?
The idea of stylus-based input is intriguing as well. Yes, tapping w-w-w-.-d-i-g-g-.-c-o-m could be a pain in the ass, but I can't imagine being anywhere near as tedious as the PSP browser.
Also, the idea of the shrunk full page view on the bottom w/ the magnified view on the top screen makes a ton of sense and and feels like it would be very intuitive.
What's missing from this whole thing - the article makes NO claim to a december release, the nintendo power scan mentions Iwata saying a year-end release for the tv tuner. It doesn't say "America" anywhere in there, the tuner in question is probably going to be released in Japan by the end of the year. Much less any mention of the Browser for America at any time.
Although I don't doubt a fall release for the browser, this isn't the proof. - JohnKappa, on 10/25/2008, -0/+4Seen this? DS email client. Prob a mock-up.
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/7527/1271/1600/0110.jpg - computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What's an N-Gage? I just remember a Choco Tacophone that tasted horrible.
- redzombi2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This actually sounds cool to me, just one thing... make it so i can use WPA instead of WEP!
Am I right? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Looks good, hopefully it won't suffer from the same problems the PSP web browser has.
- sangsara, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Guess you couldn't be "bother" to use it either. But yeah, I agree with you there.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"VERY cheap system = You LOSE!"
You forgot to add "sux0r n00b looflls".
Yes, I own Animal Crossing.
I also own a PDA specifially equipped with software designed to speed up stylus text entry. Browsing is still annoying and extremely tedious.
It's more aggrivating to use than anything. Unless you *have* to browse something, it will lose its appeal rather quickly. Do you realize how long it'd take to type a standard reply?
I'm not bashing the DS, I'm bashing annoying underdeveloped ideas that companies have for mobile devices, which is actually pretty valid in our "mobile world". Eh, but I assume that won't stop the deluge of negative marks on my comments though, will it? ;) - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I wonder if the huge differences in Japanese versus English texting techniques will stall the development any?
Or will they just keep the lower screen as a keyboard? - blw1138, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5please do us all a favor and learn how to spell
- tsar04, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4what's with all the cynicism?? this is great news for anybody who owns a ds...even if you're using a pretty small screen, it's still an option that you didn't have before..and its a whole new direction for nintendo, which is cool
- jasonisageek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It would be either finger hits or fingers hit. Never fingers hits.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It will be nice to be able to check my email wherever I find an open hotspot.
Since it will make use of two screens, one as a full-sized close-up view and one as a thumbnail view that lets you set the viewing area, it should work nicely on the small screens.
And if the on-screen touchable keyboard is as easy to use as the one in Animal Crossing DS, this thing will rock! - Aninhumer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No touchscreen?
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Allarise, you speak wise, and step softly.
My cell phone browser has more functionality and usability than my PSP browser. - WDot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sweet, I'd love something like this. Since I don't have a palm pilot or anything, I have no portable solutions for surfing the Internet. It's all done on my noisy PC. Now I can reserve my PC for doing actual work and time-killing can be limited to my DS.
- thecommish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just wish they would announce a release date for DS Lite in the US. I'm waiting for that to get a DS.
- DrakeGTA, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Direct video link... http://stewie.vsocial.com/video/e.swf?v=f70921ed906f863f4fa4b0aa4c8e498b&j=true
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What does the PSP browser fail in? Ive never seen a review on it.
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2so how much will it cost??? and when is the tv tuner comming out...??? and man nintendo suprises me more and more with good marketing strategys and good ideas to sell the products!!
- brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh God yes.
Nintendo's official stance is that "WEP provides enough security", so I don't think it will ever happen. They had their chance with the DS Lite but decided not to implement it. :-/ - battlefield1985, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice, I just bought a DS Today too w00t. *Before reading this* (Had to have Metroid and Mario!)
- dorkusmalorkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had one (have since sold it) and there were alot of memory issues. Many sites wouldn't finish loading (one specific I remember was Kotaku and I think Joystiq also). You would get a "Not enough memory" message and the screen would go blank. 4colorrebellion would not load correctly after their site redesign but they now have a "lite" version that is supposed to work. Many sites were fairly funtional. Occasionally, I would shut down the browser in the middle of loading a page and it would crash to whole device. When I turned it back on, all my settings were corrupted and I had to reset everything, including WEP key and re-enabling WMA playback over internet connection. Hence, the reason I sold it.
- Aninhumer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Technically, he hasn't made any spelling errors...
...but by golly has he made grammor errors!
Actually this could have been sarcasm - theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The trick is to bookmark one's most visited sites. Most internet browing is done on a few sites, which can be set up as bookmarks to save typing.
- yugiohdan6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well with this you could always use aim express
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wish they'd release an AIM cart. that had the top screen be the text (maybe bubbles like ichat) and the bottom screen be the keyboard. I'd pay a decent amount for wireless AIM on the go.
- jdrift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great Link, but misleading title; This is NOT a confirmation of the Opera browser on the DS in December. We will have to wait until E3 until we hear more about the US release date;0
- rhino_rampant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jesus, again!?
- DragonQuester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that would be so awesome. this is why i love nintendo. they come out with stuff like this. and its optional. if you dont want it. you dont have to get it. which would make it less expensive.
About the Opera browser...what about viruses? i would flip if my DS got a virus!!!! - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1rss aggregation, ram expansion, the onboard memory ,etc etc etc etc etc etc
