- lilbitmoreslyk, on 04/04/2009, -3/+41The iPhone's game audience and games are different from Nintendo DS'. Just like PS3/Xbox360's game audience is different from Nintendo Wii's. I don't think iTunes did pressured or "bit" Nintendo as much as the article leads on. I think it was more of like: "thats a good idea lets do it too with games".
- agentsrecord, on 04/05/2009, -4/+18Nintendo: If you want this to work really good, one tip. NO MORE PORTS. We've bought the original NES classics dozens of times over the last 10 years. Create some new killer apps for this service!
- JoeCool1986, on 04/05/2009, -0/+13Hold on, back the pickup truck up. How is this new system any different than WiiWare on the Wii? Hasn't Nintendo simply ported their own idea, an idea that existed from before the iPhone was even around? I'm confused.
- inactive, on 04/05/2009, -1/+14Why would I get sick of progress?
- ashkan101, on 04/05/2009, -3/+13No they aren't. The core-gamer owns a DS because it has more games from every genre than the PSP does, in addition it doesn't suffer from gaming droughts like the PSP does because it actually has a lot of developer support behind it.
Now the iPhone and iPod touch's demographic are not gamers at all. They are simply people who own the device and want a distraction every now and then. While on the other hand DS and PSP are mainly gaming devices so the people who buy them want to play games for extended periods of time.
So as you can see, you're a dumbass. - maxvette, on 04/04/2009, -1/+11If they want their store to be succesful they should open it up to developers in the same way Apple did
- TheBlueVulcan, on 04/05/2009, -2/+10It's been 5 years dude. Calm the ***** down. Are you pissed that there have since been 5 new models of your car, too?
- GloriousNight, on 04/05/2009, -0/+7It seems to me that the article fails to mention Steam's success in the market of software distribution. Maybe it's not as notable as I think it is, but I'm pretty sure the first company to popularize the idea of digital game distribution is Valve.
- 9bpm9, on 04/05/2009, -6/+13Who still has the original Nintendo DS and is getting sick of the Nintendo re-releasing all their stuff *****?
- Ryan0617, on 04/05/2009, -1/+7You're right, it's totally irrelevant.
- WildKat037, on 04/05/2009, -2/+7I'm not saying that is a feature I'm saying that would be a cool feature.
- tabledesk, on 04/05/2009, -0/+4What IS the process for getting software on the DSi?
Do they have their own IDE? What does it cost to get it? - Elranzer, on 04/06/2009, -0/+4Nintendo will stop selling NES ports once it stops being profitable.
You realize that there's two or three whole generation gamers born AFTER the NES died, and less than 1% of gamers are emulator/ROM pirates. Classic NES (and SNES) games are just as important to Nintendo's revenue cycle as new games. - tabledesk, on 04/05/2009, -0/+3Going forward, there's a lot less of a reason to get a DSi for casual gaming if you have and already use regularly an iPod touch. WiiWare is only the same in its digital distribution -- and in that sense, Xbox Live Arcade predates it all.
The App Store is a whole different beast since it's $99 dollars to put a game on the store. Getting a game onto the DSi store isn't something you can manage in the hours between your day job. It's not democratized like that.
That's why it's a problem for Nintendo. The game selection will never catch up in variety, the prices will *never* be 99-cents without those economics.
If you assume digital distribution is the only way for Nintendo to proceed with whatever comes after the DSi, then Apple has already locked down software selection and developer preparation years in advance. - allisonaxe, on 04/06/2009, -0/+3they have, but they're not marketing it that way. they're marketing it as "DS with a camera" as opposed to "the next generation portable." I think thats a mistake, and that they could be drumming up a lot more interest (granted, they sold out quickly at my local store anyway...)
- inactive, on 04/05/2009, -1/+4not on a hand-held they're not.
- XeroXenith, on 04/05/2009, -5/+8No, you worded it like it *is* a feature. Clarity next time please.
- morrissey79, on 04/06/2009, -1/+4The DCI has been on sale for about 6 months here in Asia...nobody will buy it becuase it hasn't been cracked yet...so no downloadable games. I'd give it a few more weeks. They'll break this bitch yet, just like every other system ever made.
- unitedkronos, on 04/05/2009, -0/+3I'm suprised Disney hasn't released any DLC to do with their properties so far, it's games like LostWinds and the original Mario/Sonic games thare are most popular on the Wii.
- Elranzer, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2The DSi has a larger screen, faster processor(s) and more RAM than the DS/Lite. Nintendo already announced there will be retail games that only run on the DSi.
- TheBlueVulcan, on 04/05/2009, -0/+2Actually, the DSi does have performance upgrades, much like the Gameboy Color did 10 years ago. The DSi features a processor that's twice as fast, and four times the ram of the Lite.
Granted, this won't help older games, but new ones can be built to take advantage of it. - maxvette, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2apple is more open to independent developers than nintendo, not as open as they should be, but more open.
- WhereAmI, on 04/06/2009, -2/+4Just try and convince yourself that the main DS audience are core-gamers, you're wrong. They're kids and other casual gamers, the same ones that are putting down the DS in favor of the iPod touch games.
"because it actually has a lot of developer support behind it."
I don't count ***** shovelware as developer support, and I do admit that the PSP lineup has been and continues to be nothing except some knock offs and PSN ports.
As you can see, the DS and iPod are the same target audience. The PSP tried to get the iPod audience and failed. - jonjo, on 04/05/2009, -0/+2Man, I hate the term "Going Forward"!
Management ***** talk at it's best. - doshindude, on 04/05/2009, -4/+5um, there is no such feature....did you even research the DSi? Nintendo has no plans for a Virtual Console for the DSi.
- allisonaxe, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't placed more marketing emphasis on that, actually, and has instead gone for "just like the one you have only with a camera and a downloadable game store!" when I read about the ram and boosted processor, I want to know if there will be games that will be specifically for DSi that will be fancier than what we have now. I keep thinking they're going about this wrong, and I think they could drum up more interest if they mentioned that it would be the "next generation of the hardware, capable of more than the last, but runs the old games, too!"
- Elranzer, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1If by "Asia" you mean "China" then you're half right, since it's selling like hotcakes in Japan ever since it's release. And then you're still wrong, since the AceKard2 flash cart will work with the DSi.
- Twee, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1allisonaxe, I went to Target this past Sunday and saw at least 10 DSi systems on the shelf. This thing came out a week and a half ago and it is NOT flying off the shelves.
- plyr58, on 04/06/2009, -2/+2Yawn
- jason1973, on 04/05/2009, -2/+2Looked at the camera effects, they are rubbish.
- inactive, on 04/05/2009, -3/+3This will be huge with the young uns who carry those things around...
Top downloads Joanass Brothers & Miley Cirus - LumenMelano, on 04/06/2009, -2/+2In what way is Apple open? It is restrictive and only serves to boost Apple's revenue, not independent developers.
- morrissey79, on 04/06/2009, -1/+1make that DSI :S
- Elranzer, on 04/06/2009, -3/+2"Just try and convince yourself that the main DS audience are core-gamers, you're wrong."
Put aside your Sony fanboy goggles and realize you're wrong. The DS is where the developers are. It's the handheld home of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Mario, Zelda, etc. Hell, it's even got Guitar Hero. The DS has an original entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, the PSP got ***** ports of GTA3 and Vice City.
Seriously, once Dragon Quest IX is released, that will be the final nail in the PSP's coffin in Japan. You just can't compete with a main entry of the Dragon Quest series in Japan.
All the PSP gets are Sony's first-party titles and crappy spin-offs from the other companies. - CoD4, on 04/05/2009, -3/+2rofl
- fandyllic, on 04/04/2009, -6/+5Buried. See above comment.
Also, what kind of margins is Nintendo making? Unless Apple has historically deviated, the margins for iPhones and iPod Touches are probably much higher and therefore a much more profitable business model.
Nintendo may be in the game more to keep it's gaming device at the top of the heap and maybe upsell to the Wii. I suspect they would rather sell 1 Wiis than 5 DSis. - MasterGrief, on 04/05/2009, -5/+3It seems a logical enough comparison at first, but think about it--new cars come with new luxury features usually, but they also come with performance upgrades. With the exception of battery life and perhaps making the system easier to control with a higher sensitivity touch pad or something, there are no performance upgrades on a DS. You just can't do it without essentially making a new platform.
So, yes, I'm pretty tired of Nintendo releasing a product and then redesigning it several times. Luckily, I never actually bought a DS, but I was a victim of this redesign crap with the Game Boy Advance: I got the first generation, with all of its stupid flaws, and then the absurdly fancy GBA SP came out. I wasn't going to pay for a new version of the same hardware, so I left it alone. They redesigned it again in the following years, making the GBA Micro, a wholly niche product that I don't think should have ever even existed. The DS'll probably follow the same path. - Carogarc70, on 04/05/2009, -3/+0Nintendo forever!
- Ryan0617, on 04/05/2009, -6/+1I hate it when they just add a theme to the game, Mario basketball, Mario go karts, mario soccer etc .
- WildKat037, on 04/05/2009, -10/+5Better yet you buy Super Metroid or Punch Out on the Wii you can also download it to the DSi for no extra cost.
- WhereAmI, on 04/05/2009, -13/+7I disagree. The iPhone and mainly the iPod Touch audience are the same as the DS's audience, the casual gamer, with a few die-hard Nintendo fans that buy the DS.
- guardgurl, on 04/05/2009, -11/+4Totally irrelevant, but I'm a huge Mario fan. Nintendo rocks!
