- Hodor, on 10/26/2009, -1/+167how about "milk-your-franchise-to-death hero"?
- macmcraeart, on 10/27/2009, -10/+105so a game that lets you pretend to be a person who is pretending to be a musician is not so fun?
i am shocked. - Lumbre619, on 10/27/2009, -1/+70so does that mean no Accordion Hero?
- Sperlock, on 10/27/2009, -2/+59When I first saw a picture of DJ Hero, I thought it was some kind of joke.
- Kinsbane, on 10/26/2009, -4/+60As far as I'm concerned, it's all about Rock Band. 3 full games, tons of DLC thus far, and even the entire experience of Beatles Rock Band makes it ***** all over any " 'Hero" game. Honestly, I wish Metallica had gone with Rock Band instead of Guitar Hero and had the same treatment the Beatles got.
- milsorgn, on 10/26/2009, -2/+49People will buy plastic guitar controllers and yet when's the last time there was an epic light gun game?
- KMartSheriff, on 10/27/2009, -2/+48"DJ Hero Not Living Up To Demand Expectations"
...to the surprise of no one. Seriously, who thought this actually good? - doshindude, on 10/27/2009, -0/+36Anyone who is truly into these games abandoned Guitar Hero long ago for Rock Band. Harmonix knows how to make these games, Activision is just trying to run GH into the ground.
- empath, on 10/27/2009, -9/+43I've been DJing for about 9 years, I've opened for a few of the biggest DJs in the world and have played gigs in front of literally thousands of people. I also love guitar hero and rock band, so I think I'm qualified to comment on the game demo after playing it for about 20 minutes at Best Buy this weekend.
There's nothing fundamentally WRONG with the idea of doing a DJ hero game. DJing is fun, mixing records is fun. I did it for years in my bedroom by myself before ever playing a gig just because I enjoyed doing it. I could very well see a DJ game being great.
The problem is that this game doesn't really duplicate what DJing really is, or capture what's fun about it. First, and foremost, hardly anybody really mixes songs together like they are in the game, even the best DJs in the world won't typically be doing mash-ups live.
And when they do cut up two records like that, it's not like playing a guitar -- a good DJ will basically improvise the entire thing, all the cuts the scratches, effects, etc -- based on what's happening on the dance floor and interacting with the dancers. One of the best things about DJing is reading a crowd and trying to keep the energy going by playing the right song or adjusting the BPM or adding another layer to it, and that's entirely absent from this.
Secondly, a good DJ set takes at least 15 minutes to even really get started, and you really don't know how great a DJ is until he's been playing for hours. This is just somehow 'mixing' a mash-up live and it's over in 5 or 6 minutes, and you do the same thing every time. Also, the main skill that most DJs have is good taste in music -- and I don't know how to make that into a game (Download 5 non-crappy songs from Hype Machine before the timer runs out!)
It's also too bad that there's no beatmatching, but I can understand why they didn't do it (would need two platters, a cueing headphone, etc)
On the actual controller -- this might be because I'm not used to it, but the platter felt too loose and you have to scratch from the inside of the platter (is this changeable in the options? i dunno) which feels backwards to me. Holding down a button to scratch seems really weird and pointless and I don't understand why you have to do it, but it actually makes it harder to control. The fader seemed to have a really tight curve so that if you're not pretty close to the middle, it doesn't count as being in the middle, whereas the typical scratch mixer has a really wide curve, so that if you're not almost to the end the 2 channels are evenly mixed. I hope that's adjustable, because I found it really annoying to try to figure out where the middle is all the time.
Also, I notice that it doesn't really make you work the fader during the scratches (even on expert mode?) So it doesn't even have the bonus feature of teaching you how to do anything useful (no beatmatching, no actual scratching techniquie).
On the plus side -- I thought the 3 mashups that I played were really well done, and sounded great and I actually DID enjoy playing it, just because rhythm action games are just compulsively entertaining. Also I found the Rewind feature accidentally, which I thought was actually pretty awesome and well implemented.
I might buy it, but I really don't think a whole lot of people will. The main problem is that DJing is so easy to get into (compared to learning to play an instrument), and DJs get crap for not being real musicians as it is. This is like pretending to be a non-musician. It might be a step too far for a lot of people to take. - KMartSheriff, on 10/27/2009, -0/+30Games like Rock Band are one of the few cases where I find DLC to be acceptable (but let's not kid ourselves, it's still way overpriced).
- danielrh9, on 10/27/2009, -3/+30I played the demo of DJ Hero at Best Buy, I was really surprised at how fun it is. It actually gives you a little freedom to be creative instead of just pressing a pattern of predefined notes. Using the crossfader and some of the effects is all kinds of fun.
However, I'm simply not paying $120 for it. While fun, it's just not worth that price tag. It's just a shame that Activision priced such a cool game with fantastic potential out of the realm of feasibility. In around five years (maybe sooner according to this story), it'll be in the bargain bin for twenty bucks. Then I'll buy it. - inactive, on 10/27/2009, -2/+24Because it looks ***** stupid. I have a friend who DJ's, always thought it would be fun but I'm not serious enough to try it as a real hobby, but what I do know is if I was at least going to imitate being one in a game, I don't want to push any goddamn buttons on a fake turntable.
- papashawn, on 10/27/2009, -1/+21you never go wikky wikky on thin air?
- dmanmax99, on 10/27/2009, -3/+22Everyone who has ever lived played air guitar at some point. Guitar Hero played into that. I can't think of anyone that plays air record player.
- SpecialLee, on 10/27/2009, -0/+18No... because we're all using Adblock Plus.
- doctordbx, on 10/27/2009, -0/+17Keyboard Cat Hero... that's what I'm hanging out for.
- MrZaiko, on 10/27/2009, -0/+15I'll wait for Flute Hero: Jethro Tull
- lolerskate, on 10/27/2009, -1/+16Bobby Kotick will soon see that milking your franchises to death as a limit to profit.
Activision wont swim in cash forever. - inactive, on 10/27/2009, -0/+13It's true- gaming has lost the balance between commercialization and creativity.
- jmdwinter, on 10/27/2009, -4/+17***** Activision.
- NoamChimpsky, on 10/27/2009, -1/+13Does this mean no "Recorder Hero"?
Aww, I was really hoping to rock out on that tricky middle part to "Mary Had a Little Lamb". It's like instant panties stripper for the ladies. - AmusedToDeath, on 10/27/2009, -0/+11You mean spinning pretend records isn't the dream of every modern adolescent?
- empath, on 10/27/2009, -0/+10I mean, they have Tiesto songs in here--
Here is what Tiesto does while he spins:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcrN06Oo4so
Don't let the fancy camera work fool you. He's standing behind a mixer jumping up and down and doing Jesus Poses and twiddles an EQ knob every once in a while, but basically he's just standing there doing nothing to the music while the song is playing.
Here's what simulating real-world DJing would be like: Jumping up and down like a goofy Dutchman during songs, pretending you're doing ***** to the mixer, while blowing lines of coke off a cd case and trying to score girls numbers and trying to find out where the afterparty is. Not exactly 'video game material' - jmdwinter, on 10/27/2009, -0/+10Robert Kotick is the world champ at that game!
- navidb, on 10/27/2009, -6/+16what the ***** happened to video games
- BREZZZ, on 10/27/2009, -0/+9Weird Al wasn't in for it.
- DISEX, on 10/27/2009, -4/+13"Mixing and DJing is so easy, you're better off spending that $120 on a real mixer."
I don't get it....your talking about a turn-table being dumb but then your saying spend $120 on a real mixer. What? You know they are completely different right. The only good turn-tables are Technics and those will run you in the several hundreds low end and up to 1-2 thousand. - pagno, on 10/27/2009, -4/+12I kind of wish Metallica had stopped making records about 20 years ago. GH:Metallica was a glorified track pack, but it did have a lot of the good ones.
- artfiend77, on 10/27/2009, -2/+10Cause we all know you can't buy a game review nowadays...
- stevieraveon, on 10/27/2009, -1/+9I can pretend to be a record player player
- bigteebo, on 10/27/2009, -1/+9"I can play other people's music!"
I miss that rave humor website. - papashawn, on 10/27/2009, -1/+8Digg is smattered with DJ Hero ads as I read this. Contextual advertising FTL.
- Mushroomer25, on 10/27/2009, -1/+8Perhaps they all just have more important things to be spending $120 on..
Seriously, I think DJ Hero looks fun as hell, but plastic turntables do not justify another $60. - SDL486, on 10/27/2009, -5/+12Guido Hero
- guitarh3ro, on 10/27/2009, -3/+10Man, ***** you guys. I actually didn't tl;dr that, I read it all. Pretty insightful what a career DJ thinks of the game. Somewhat of a depressing review though lol
- killamockingbrd, on 10/27/2009, -1/+7Good. Now if Bobby Kotick will suffer a slow and painful death.
- JonTheGoose, on 10/27/2009, -0/+6It's wikity wikity wikity WACK!
- jasmus, on 10/27/2009, -3/+9Mixing and DJing isn't "so easy" to do WELL. Give it a try sometime.
- wakeupsticky, on 10/27/2009, -1/+7I'll stick with Heroin Hero.
- Juntistik, on 10/27/2009, -7/+13http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/musician
Dj's do more than slap on a record you know. The music production itself is somewhat a crude form of composure. You forget synthesizers are an instrument too. Whatever, all new forms of music has purist ***** screaming sacrilege and talentless. - fingerrockets4, on 10/27/2009, -0/+6http://iluvdezine.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/dqwx ...
- NoamChimpsky, on 10/27/2009, -0/+6Your comment is like an Escher.
It's absolutely beautiful, but I cannot wrap my head around the non-euclidean imagery, because thinking about it too hard makes my brain hurt. - bigteebo, on 10/27/2009, -0/+6stand on one leg bonus!!
- empath, on 10/27/2009, -0/+5it doesn't make sense, and yes it spins 360 degrees.
- robertisaar, on 10/27/2009, -0/+5Time Crisis?
- jasmus, on 10/27/2009, -0/+5Does the turntable on the controller actually spin? I'm seeing the pictures, but can't figure out how 3 buttons on something that looks like a turntable makes any sense.
- Pugmonkeys, on 10/27/2009, -8/+12A. The review for this game from ign says its a great new experience, I'm willing to at least try it out.
B. The music from this game is awesome, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RAIzFrMm50, killer combo
C. It is releasing on the 27th so we should wait a little longer on declaring it a massive failure.
I'm not planning on buying this game, but the hate for it is a bit premature. I remember saying almost the same thing as all of you when guitar hero first came out but look at us now. The market is incredibly saturated with music games though so its not as likely to explode as guitar hero did. - SpecialLee, on 10/27/2009, -7/+11Comment of the day goes to you, good sir.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyRDDOpKaLM - whatthefu, on 10/27/2009, -0/+4Am I the only one who would totally go for Accordion Hero?
