- existent, on 01/10/2008, -1/+39Wii: BETTER GAMES, especially third party; Nintendo, you can't do this alone, you have tried for the past 2 generations _and failed_
- deetsnai, on 01/10/2008, -5/+39Who the ***** would digg down free Xbox LIVE?
- SLockhart, on 01/10/2008, -1/+17While I support the idea of paying for XBox Live you are wrong. Online games are peer hosted. Every time you play a multiplayer game on XBox live one of the players 360's is acting as the server.
- Dracusis, on 01/10/2008, -0/+13^ And using their bandwidth.
If XBL had dedicated servers then most of us would stop complaining, but MS is basically charging us to use our own bandwidth and hardware to host games for others to play. Why should we pay them for something that PC users have never had to pay for? It costs them *nothing* at all to run multilayer games on XBL, but they still make us pay to do it.
This is why XBL games are, at times, so terribly laggy and have such low player caps compared to proper dedicated servers with high bandwidth Internet connections. Hell, even most PC gamers don't have to pay to access true dedicated servers, only those that want to run their own dedicated server have to pay for it. - NeoCortex, on 01/10/2008, -0/+11Nintendo, stop acting like everyone who wants to play online is either under 12 or a child molester. Get a real online system going.
- Smwbigboss, on 01/10/2008, -3/+12As a core gamer, I use my Wii a lot. I've just beat Metroid Prime 3 on hyper difficulty last month, and Super Mario Galaxy a few weeks ago. Now I'm playing Medal of Honor Heros 2 a lot online. I just bought 5 Gamecube games for less than $25 because they're cheap as dirt right now (Wind Waker, Battalion Wars, Baten Kaitos Origins, SSX 3, F-Zero GX). I downloaded A Link to the Past a few days ago on the virtual console, but haven't really got a chance to play it yet.
To each their own, I guess... - Topher06, on 01/10/2008, -3/+12I have to say that most people supporting the Wii are throwing in buzzterms like "casual gamer" or "gampleay > graphics" way to often. This is a clear sign that they can't find something else to defend this wayward console.
The fact is ASSIDE from Wii Sports and Wii Play, MOST games made by Nintendo only have mass appeal to the under 20 crowd. Nintendo isn't diversifying gaming, and they are not trying to make a game console for all ages. They had one hit game (Wii Sports) that appealed to the masses in general, which helped to sell the console, but they have no intention of continuing to produce first party games that will continue to appeal to the 9 - 99 crowd.
Most third party Wii titles are like lures in fishing. 3rd parties are trying to find out which games will sell well on the Wii, and so far they tend to be party games. There are few original or exclusive titles for the Wii that IS NOT a party game, most of the other 3rd party titles are vapid ports from other systems with motion control tacked on. The Wii is becoming a one hit wonder and motion control is being used almost exclusively for whack-a-mole like gameplay. It was innovative but will it last another few years, I don't think so.
Nintendo is clearly setting themselves to be a G rated gaming company, and this has been their problem since the N64. Way too many cutesy G titles that appeal to kids and leveraging their franchise brands in this age group. But Nintendo's resolution for 2008 is to go back to their original message, and that is to make games for all ages, and invest their billions in profit in some new IP that is not Zelda, Mario, or Metroid based. - BlueSkyfish, on 01/10/2008, -8/+17"There seems to not be a console this generation that seeks a middle ground that appeals to both casual and core gamers like the PS2 did such a relatively short time ago."
Nintendo always have been trying to appeal to both groups this whole time. They want to appeal to everyone, not just the casual gamer. Although I think Sony and Microsoft's marketing teams want you to believe otherwise.
If you look at Nintendo's first party titles, you see a variety of demographics. Wii Sports and Wii Play appeal to the the casual gamer, who are getting use to the Wii controler and video games in general. Wario Ware Smooth Moves is a party game for people who want to play quick games when they have friends over. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is a 50+ hour adventure game, which I don't think a casual gamer would have the time or patience to complete. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is a FPS for the hardcore audience. Super Mario Strikers is a sports game, which is good for both demographics. Super Mario Galaxy has levels designed so the casual gamer can just get one or two stars a day without having to play for hours at a time, but enough depth and difficulty for hardcore gamers who want to get all 120 stars (plus the 121 Luigi stars).
Although Nintendo has no control over what kinds of games third party developers make, there have been a mix of hardcore and casual games on the market. Though a lot of them try to bank off the Wii's popularity by putting no effort into making shovelware, then trying to pass it off as a casual game. It's always important to read reviews before you purchase a game. It's a shame so many people are passing up good games, like Zack and Wiki, for ***** Hanna Montana games. - xXGeechXx, on 01/10/2008, -1/+9"Page 2: "Support full Backwards Compatibility on the 40GB [Playstation3] model..." Good idea, but unfortunately I suspect Sony would have to make more money with its new system before that could happen."
I just bought the 40GB, It would be nice if they could do this?
But is this even physically possible? the only thing I can see is some sort of software emulator? - counterplex, on 01/10/2008, -0/+7Yes, $50 _is_ too rich for my blood. I come from the PC world so my views might be a bit skewed towards openness but I just bought an Xbox 360 with Xbox Live Gold service so I think I can comment on this. The PC world has a simple concept of online play - bring your own internet connection and the games provide the rest. Xbox live might provide, at best, a unified protocol for use by all xbox games to get access to various types of services e.g. online high scores, online play, etc. This is on _top_ of bringing your own internet connection which can cost $50 on its own per month. Services like Steam on the PC provide all those services and then some so clearly it's not something unique to Xbox live.
I have no problem paying for individual items of content e.g. hd movies, full games bought online, tv shows, etc but not for the service itself. In other words, I'd pay to utilize Xbox live as a distribution medium but not as an online community. - seldon452, on 01/10/2008, -1/+8Big companies, listening to the ideas of their customers! NEVER!
- caddyalan, on 01/10/2008, -4/+10Page 2: "Support full Backwards Compatibility on the 40GB [Playstation3] model..." Good idea, but unfortunately I suspect Sony would have to make more money with its new system before that could happen.
Page 3: "...the majority of the [Wii] library is made up of low-class filler garbage..." Are casual games and ports making money? If they are, then they won't go away. On the other hand, I worry that low-budget games which attempt to use the remote control and find a non-gamer audience might eventually turn people away if there's little lasting value. - Shirly, on 01/11/2008, -1/+7The N64 failed?
- anonymous666, on 01/10/2008, -1/+7NTSC 60GB & 20GB units have EE + GS chips = 100% backwards compatibility
NTSC 80GB & PAL 60GB units have GS chips only = partial backwards compatibility (software is used to emulate EE chip).
ALL 40GB units do not have neither EE nor GS chip = no backwards compatibility - jrizzo, on 01/10/2008, -5/+11PSN = Nice community but lacks features.
XBOX Live = Nice features but has n00bs with voice chat. - SLockhart, on 01/11/2008, -0/+6We are paying for all the people who keep the system running smoothly....um forget what I just said. Sorry MS but you're not helping me here.
- Zamfir, on 01/10/2008, -2/+8Except you are using someone else's bandwidth as most games are Peer-to-Peer... so what exactly do you get for your $50/year? A sore ass and that's about it. Funny how Microsoft can't even keep it up during peek usage... You would think that with all the money they're collecting they would have built infrastructure that is *scalable*... but then this is Microsoft after all.
- AnimZero, on 01/10/2008, -0/+5Why would Microsoft advertise iPods?
- Renton, on 01/10/2008, -3/+8"Doesnt matter how many words you use"
That tells a lot about why blood and violence takes priority over gameplay experience for some people. "Me want crush!" - MarkKezner, on 01/11/2008, -0/+5Yes, it did. Which is hard for me to say because I always loved Nintendo's stuff.
However if it's fun for you then who cares? Game on. - NuclearFriend, on 01/11/2008, -0/+5I have and do pay for Xbox Live, but coming from a PC background, where I get to play on *dedicated* servers for free regularly, it doesn't make sense that I have to pay $60 a year to play on other players hosted games (who are hence providing the bandwidth, not Microsoft). $60 for what is essentially a unified "master server network" is a bit much.
- JayD16, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4What I really find odd about LIVE is what is free and what isn't. You get everything that LIVE is praised for, friends list, messaging, gamer tag, etc. for free but what PSN gives you for free, online multiplayer, xbox live charges for.
- mywhitenoise, on 01/10/2008, -3/+7Most of those PS3 ones are in/will be in effect this year. Except for the trade-in program, which wont happen, and the backwards compatibility on the 40GB model.
- BlueSkyfish, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4I don't know how Nintendo can do that. They could refuse games below a certain quality level, but that wouldn't really go well with the developers.
- santasing, on 01/10/2008, -5/+9I have used both PSN and Live. I think they are quite comparable. In fact, Warhawk's online experience is better than most.
- Ranneko, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4Bah, Games for Windows is fine, Games for Windows Live is the retarded brother of Xbox Live that should be abandoned or at least made free. Admittedly the only 2 games I know of which use it are Shadowrun and Halo 2, neither of which are brilliant PC games.
- cjschmidt, on 01/10/2008, -1/+4The idea of free Xbox Live sounds good at first, but there are already too many racist douchebags and 12 year olds on there as it is. Make it free and more people will abuse the service. On the other hand - all live does is connect me to another xbox (no dedicated servers), so really, Live doesn't do much of anything.
I would much rather MS add value to Live than make it free. Give us regular free TV shows (even with commercials), reward good users with free ms points, or host some dedicated servers. Maybe get a good MMO going and don't charge a monthly fee. - razor150, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4The problem with that statement is that the 80gig PS3 still has some of the PS2 in it, the graphics synthesizer. The 40gig doesn't have it, so no BC for the foreseeable future.
So, if he were a real game journalist he'd know that. It isn't as if it was a secret. - Renton, on 01/10/2008, -2/+5I think "Stop releasing new SKUs" should also apply to Sony.
- MRintheKeys, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4Compared to the Playstation...yes
- Nobiting, on 01/10/2008, -1/+4That statement wasn't smart at all, the only reason Sony would include software emulation of PS2 games would be to INCREASE it's sales. In that case, an update would be required A.S.A.P.
- t2t2, on 01/10/2008, -0/+3Everyone knows what Microsoft ads are like...
You just won 2 free iPod... - Luigi239, on 01/10/2008, -1/+4"Seeing as the 80Gb model uses a software solution, what is to stop Sony from adding this low-cost solution to the cheaper 40GB model via firmware update other than the desire to sell more PS2s at the upcoming $99 price point?"
The 80gb PS3 does not include the emotion engine of the ps2, but it does have the ps2s graphics chip if I am not mistaken. The 40gb model does not include this, so emulation is not possible. - skellener, on 01/10/2008, -0/+3Article forgot - Allow original XBOX saves to be copied over to XBOX 360. This shouldn't be THAT hard to do. Just do it Microsoft!
- jigga, on 01/10/2008, -0/+3Oh my dad! Two different people actually came up with the idea to create New Years Resolutions for video games, and in January no less! I'm shocked and appalled
- Superman007, on 01/10/2008, -1/+3Why?
- nicktx, on 01/10/2008, -0/+2They dumped it because it costs money to do, which they rather spend on other things. My guess is that if they released an emulator that doesn't work with some games customers will be unhappy and Sony will get a lot of bad publicity. The quality control needed to get an emulator that's up to their standard is going to be expensive. It's easier to just not have it and besides, there's already a SKU with BC in the stores. The PS3 hardware can easily handle the PS2 emulation in software.
- thecheatah, on 01/10/2008, -9/+11as a core gamer, I dont touch my wii at all.
Doesnt matter how many words you use, the fact is I bought a wii when it first came out and I dont like playing it. I only play it when other "casual gamers" come over, but other then that it sits there warming up my ps3 games that I have stacked on top of it.
so I am an example - celkin, on 01/10/2008, -0/+2anyone who realizes that will never happen
- DarkShroud, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2Sony does, their firmware updates are the proof.
- DarkShroud, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2They've been working on the emulation since day one. Each firmware updates fixes little bugs in games on the NTSC 80gig & PAL 60gig. They're working on the GS chip emulation and they could put it into the firmware since it's half there already. The actual questions is, will they do it?
- DarkShroud, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2.
- taintedzodiac, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2Perhaps you haven't realized it, but pretty much every "Live-enabled" blade on the XBox 360 UI has at least one ad on it. Take a look.
- fohf, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2Live should switch features between Silver and Gold.
Silver should have free access to basic online matchmaking in unranked matches only. Also online achievements would be disabled. Maybe also remove access to game demos and free tv/movie previews.
Gold should have full access to all DL content, allow ranked matching and online achievements.
This keeps the people who feel like it is worth paying for happy since they like to pay for something that should be free and let's the rest of us play because we know better. - Experion, on 01/10/2008, -0/+1Just go away...
- Ninjazn, on 01/10/2008, -0/+1An article that didn't get dugg any?
- BurgerDST, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1I want an Xbox 360 keyboard and mouse.
- Yage2006, on 01/10/2008, -0/+1Forgot a big one for nintendo.
STOP putting intro's we cannot skip in the beginning of your games. - MimoSkater, on 01/10/2008, -0/+1They really couldn't have fit this onto one page by using that huge chunk of black space at the side?
