- Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -9/+40Damn right it is great. Nintendo still has it and can still pull them off; sequel titels that are still innovative and awesome.
90nine, innovative gameplay does not require entirely new characters or setting. - Couchy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19Is funny how haters neglect to realize sequels are a huge part of gaming. Guess everyone who bought Halo 2 was a sucker right? What about BF2? Any of the Zelda's after the original? Half-Life 2? By the logic you guys are using all these games are just ploys to make you buy more of the same franchise which is recycled over and over right?
try playing it first, thats all im gonna say - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21Just goes to show that the major video-game purchasing demographic these days is people who are just old enough to have played the classics--and want to play them bigger and better.
Also goes to show that 2D gaming will probably never be killed by 3D gaming...at least not until the advent of VR.
Surely I'm not the only post-teen who plays Maple Story occasionally with my fiancee? - tuffy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Not only that, but Mario side-scrollers haven't gotten a proper sequel since Super Mario World at the SNES' launch. The trolls would have us believe New Super Mario Bros. is in the same league as every other sequel-heavy franchise, which simply isn't true.
- nunofgs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6My advice to you: try Metroid Prime Hunters before you buy it. I bought it because everyone said it was great.
I wish I could get my money back. I really like the controls and how the character "feels", but the story, repetitiveness of levels and overall gameplay is just not there for me. (and I'm a hardcore FPS gamer) - Wonotch, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10im assuming 90nine and zetsurin are the type of people that think innovation in games requires things like the latest shader model, more polygons, and the fastest next gen system.
I feel sorry for people like you. Youre going to miss out on a lot of great games because they werent "innovative" enough. - Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Define innovation, then. If you don't understand the game involves new gameplay mechanics, then I don't know what to say. What do you want?
- madjo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8So is Tetris apparently and Brain Age...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Hey, I have an idea! How about you try playing the game!!!
- sam10685, on 10/12/2007, -20/+23wow... must be a good game. i'll be gettin mine (and a new DS lite) next month.
- Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Hey haters:
NINTENDO MAKES FUN GAMES THAT PEOPLE REALLY ENJOY (as shown by the number of front page nintendo stories; long live democracy). IT'S OKAY IF YOU DON'T ENJOY THEM AS WELL, NO ONE IS FORCING YOU. YOU DON'T HAVE TO TELL PEOPLE THEY'RE WRONG FOR ENJOYING WHAT THEY CHOOSE TO ENJOY. GO OUTSIDE AND ENJOY THE SUMMER.
Thanks. I hope I was loud enough. - Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7>>"New powerups" don't qualify.
Whatever. Then there's no point in debating this. You have your own ideas of what innovation are and I have mine. Taking elements from mario's 3D games and combining them into a 2D world that's portable and fun to play is innovative enough for me. - GolfDude, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7what sony jackass in here is giving everyone negative diggs... reveal yourself so we can laugh at you!
- GrilledOnion, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10Everyone that buys a DS Lite should get this, I wonder how many copies it sold in the US?
- Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8>>im assuming 90nine and zetsurin are the type of people that think innovation in games requires things like the latest shader model, more polygons, and the fastest next gen system. I feel sorry for people like you. Youre going to miss out on a lot of great games because they werent "innovative" enough.
Totally. Arguments like that always come off as rationalizing ones inability to afford to buy ***** they know they'd enjoy. NSMB is really fun, what more do you want from a game? Isn't having fun the whole point of gaming? - Yaku83, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Higher res screen, brightness settings, 20% lighter, 40% smaller and the screen is more scratch resistant. Also, the D-pad on the DS lite is more like the Gameboy Micro's (i.e. more sensitive).
- Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8>>So enlighten me. Let's focus on Mario Bros specifically. What 'innovations' have taken place exactly? Oh, nothing to say except for hitting the red hand? I rest my case.
"A lot of what made Yoshi's Island so fantastic was how the designers used graphic capabilities to create and incorporate new gameplay elements into the mix. That's the same with New Super Mario Bros.-- the power of the Nintendo DS makes it possible for new elements like the deforming terrain, giant 3D enemies and obstacles, fully rotating environments, and countless other elements that are more integral to the game design than they are for "ooh neat" effect." *shrug*. 3D models in a 2D environment, it's fun stuff. - MegaByte, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7No, it sold well over 300,000 in the second week... the article title is misleading.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7> Google, use it.
Result: The old one looked like a brick and has bad contrast/brightness. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7You're retarded. This is not a remake, its a NEW game, thus the title NEW Super Mario Bros.
- niceyuk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6"Exactly. It's laughable that people will buy Testris AGAIN. Mario bros also."
Its equally laughable that paystation 3 fanboys will buy Final Fantasy XXXXXIIIIIIIIIII again, and MGS3 and GT5.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2> Oh let me guess... you move left, right, jump and occassionally shoot?
Oh yeah good one! And in all FPSes all you do is run around in shoot, and in all fighting games all you do is move and fight! - EAMUS1CATULI, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I was going to get a ds lite for my nephew but i decided on the Sony PSP. There is just more you can do with the PSP compared to the ds lite.
- kaoru, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I'm in the UK but ordered this game from America because I just couldn't wait (yay for Nintendo's region-free policy on handheld consoles!), and it truly is everything it should be, playing it feels like playing a cross between Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World, it's nostalgic and new all at the same time. And on top of that it's got a bunch of the mini-games from Super Mario DS, but in multiplayer form as well! Genius. Nintendo have really outdone themselves with this.
- Spaz007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3And playing a 4th Mario Bros remake is any better.
- niceyuk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Nintendo has sold over 18 million DS, and more than 2 million DS lites already
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9I think this might be called trolling, zetsurin.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10The thing that makes Mario such a long term hit is that the game play is simple to learn and simple to master and it doesn't involve a long, complex storylines that you have to waste weeks on. There are also no NC-17 violence that would turn off parents, many of whom were the kids that grew up with Mortal Combat. They know whats out there and Mario has always been a good, safe and fun franchise.
- Gills, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2why did they call it "new" smb. i can't stand when they do that. cause eventually it won't be new.
- sam10685, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol... i thought i was weird... i bought 007 :Agent under fire (so-so game, good graphics though), THEN i bought a gamecube.
- hawk3r, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4well, for innovation, there is a few new additions and things, but what really makes this game something that will draw many people from away from the psp and towards the ds is the nostalgia factor...its reminiscent of what it was like when we first discovered games as kids, but its updated and little things were added...but not enough to take away from it being a simple addictive fun-ass game that anyone can pick up and get into
- Yaku83, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Love it, great game. For those bitching about how its nothing new, you apparently never had a childhood. :)
- Cyborg771, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2More that you can do? Like what? Watch the movies that no one is making? Play the one or two titles that don't put people to sleep or give them tumors? Polish the screen and pray to god that you don't scratch it by looking at it too hard?
- Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Heh, sony.. I was hyped on PS3 until they threw the $600 price tag for the "complete" system in our faces. PS1, PS2.. great *****.. but no game is worth a $600 down payment.
- SpaceNinjaDino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Before judging the game, one must play the Mario vs. Luigi mode with a friend. That mode there is one of the most fun activities I've ever done. I think it even surpasses the fun from Marble Blast Ultra multiplayer mode.
(Fun is on a different realm than innovation or graphics.) - turntabletux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2My good friend bought it and all he does is play it. He tells me that it's amazing. I do plan to get the DS Lite and the new game. :]
-Ant - biffsputnik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yeah I bet all these sony fanboys who knock the mario sequels never buy any FF's.... riiight
As far as comparing MB DS to KH2 and others, apples & oranges- check this versus hand held sales- I doubt you'll find many (if any) selling at that rate. Not to mention the sales they'll get over the next couple of weeks with the DS Lite sales. - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9castlevania and advance wars would be good choices too.
- herogear, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6This game is much like Tetris - the ultimate equalizer in gaming. Trust me on this - there are few games that are so easy to get into, hard to master, and harder to put down. So it only makes sense that New Super Mario Bros. would sell so well; FPS games like Metroid Prime Hunters have a much steeper learning curve. Not to mention the nature of the gaming market itself - FPS games are a dime a dozen, but how many pure 2D sidescrolling games come out in this day and age?
- spikes, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7I'd buy this if my next computer upgrade (for UT2007) wasn't gonna cost me $2100CAD. :|
Long live Mario. - Cyborg771, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1NSMB is as big of an update to the mario franchise as Halo 2 was to Halo. I admit that it isn't drastically different but that doesn't mean that it isn't a great game.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yeah, wasting money is one. And playing PS2 ports is another.
- Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -12/+11"Oh noez, i'm not going to get gran turismo 5 on my new paystation because its another new remake"
- Spaz007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Long live spam...
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"a spiked rod being shoved up your ass out of nowhere"
So that's your idea of entertainment? I guess there must be a yahoo support group for that. - ahatter, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3opera is making one not was.
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I'm just waiting for "New Bionic Commando" That would rock!
- ajskhan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6what exactly is better with the DS lite other than it looks better???
- Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4www.cabel.name - Three dslite review videos for you. You won't be able to resist a lite afterwards.
