- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -9/+83Somebody needs to invent a mouse that senses where it is in relation to the screen. Oh, and put a gyroscope in it, too. Ooh, ooh, and it has to be wireless! Might as well add a speaker, and maaaaybe a mic! Brilliant!
Waaaaiiiitt..... - Onetrack, on 10/12/2007, -12/+66Mouse and friggin keyboard microsoft.. the usb ports are right in the front and ready for use.
- vedichymn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+46Peter Moore makes innocent comment, wild speculation ensues! This is a pretty terrible story.
- drog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45"...Shoulder buttons, triggers, analog sticks, d-pads, I mean, there's a lot going on there when you compare it to the old Atari 2600 button-and-stick"
I don't think a mouse and keyboard would solve this problem. Also, a mouse isn't very practical when your sitting on a couch. - KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -8/+47If you wear black courduroy pants, you have more problems than just input devices son. XD
- Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36>>every one wants a mouse -n- keyboard.
Uh. Everyone but me. I'm happy to keep those on my PC for PC games. I sure don't want that for a console. Let's see. Four people sprawled out on the floor with keyboards and mice? Sounds sucky! - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30"Mouse and friggin keyboard microsoft"
Bury me all you want but that's not more simplified, that's more complex! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17It's going to be one button that says "easy" every time you press it you win.
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Then I guess he's doing his job right. They didn't put him in charge of marketing for nothing.
- Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13No kidding. Nowadays people can't even differentiate between a possessive and a contraction.
- kitsune111, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17every one wants a mouse -n- keyboard. the suport is there you just need to buy one. but you cant kick back in a lounger with them. i think the controler i ther way to go. like you 360 people say bout the ps3 "I don't want a pc. If i did i would buy one". is you want a mouse and keys get a pc.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@benitojuarez
They don't work on your leg if you wear black corduroy pants! I know first hand! - KevinJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Like the KROSE mod...make it shock the user with electricity!!!!!!!
- Lynx34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Peter Moore makes a statement and it makes it on digg? What he said doesn't mean anything except that he wants Sony to fail, which at this point is Microsoft's XBox division's highest priority. How this is a good story is beyond me.
- crawf061, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Title should have read: "New Xbox 360 Controller for Noobs?"
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Can you imagine the beef Microsoft would get if they released an "almost" identical version of the Wii controller?"
Yeah, the internets would bitch, then we would all go play Gears of War with our new controller and its rifle shell. XD - shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Because no game manufacturer is going to spend any time getting their game to work well with an alternative 360 controller when everybody has the standard controller.
- Smp351, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10The allure of playing Wii will not drop after 30 minutes. I give Nintendo all the credit in the world for trying to bring about change to HELP the videogame industry. In my opinion, it should be a lot of fun and will bring more people to the market. Peter is just doing what a typical company does and try to downplay someone else's inovation.
- ravitek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I wonder if tilt sensing would somehow make it into this alternate controller.
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How would you do "real" force feedback on a handheld controller?
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Too complicated? I think the Xbox 360 controler has a perfect layout, I mean there are only 6 buttons plus the triggers, that's not that bad. If you can't figure that out, perhaps you should be in school instead of playing video games.
If they reduced the Xbox controler to a single stick and a button, how complex do you think the games could get? The Atari had a simple controler for a reason; you were playing incredibly simple games. The Wii is bringing back the simple controler scheme, but it's even gaining new buttons.
Also, there's the big fact that if some simpler scheme was introduced, all previous Xbox and Xbox 360 games would be rendered useless with the new controler, forcing the user to either buy an old one or not play some of the great games on the systems - ff6600, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7So basically you want The Phantom's "Lapboard"
- johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'm with Subcranium on this one - the Wii has gotten a ton of free publicity out of this, it's the system a lot of people are talking about (for good or for bad - and a lot of it has been for good).
So for Moore to dis the "new hawtness" is pretty much Microsoft standard operating procecure: dis your competitor whether it's accurate or not (You'll stop having fun in 30 minutes! Don't look at the man behind the curtain!)
I plan on getting a 360 in 2 years or so, but I'm getting a Wii this fall becaus it is *so* different. That, and since it's fully backwards compatible with the Gamecube on launch day, that's one less piece of hardware I have to have stacked in my entertainment center. - tdogg241, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sounds like a bum controller to me. You should try exchanging it.
- LordRahl72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I like the 360 controller just the way it is.
- jonthegamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5is it just me or is the 360 controller good enough. I hope that if they do change it they dont start making it the only one you can get like they did with the origional xbox
- diggAl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I understand that graphics don't make a game good, but you can't tell me they don't enhance a game. You also can't tell me that a new control method AUTOMATICALLY makes for better gameplay. It almost certainly will for many games, but not all. (Yes, I know that you can also use conventional controls with the Wii).
Before you assume I'm anti-Nintendo or something, please know that I had one console in the last generation, and that was the Gamecube. I loved it. This generation I went with the 360 (following the games, not the console maker), and I can tell you I feel like I haven't been this happy with a console since I first got an 8-bit Nintendo with Super Mario Bros. - nashdawg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I think most people agree the Wii has an inovative controller, but whats keeping the 360 or the PS3 from releasing an "almost" identical controller. Basically you can get Wii functionality for the price of a controller. Now you have next gen graphics and next gen game play on one system.
- natefisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The current 360 controller has replaced the Wavebird as my all-time favorite controller. Everything from the size to the weight of it I love. I am sure not everyone is a fan but for someone reason it just feels right to me. Big improvement over the X-Box controllers.
Re-guarding the Wii? I think the 360 should let the Wii do what it is going to do and they should go after the 'possible' new market of 'Whoa that PS3 is way too much!' buyers. Now I say 'possible' because I have no idea how much a market that is going to be. If you know can I borrow your crystal ball. The Wii is a different machine and most of a lot of us gamers (both 360 and PS3 fanboys) are going to end up buying a Wii as a second machine. 360 should just drop its price by a $100 a week before the PS3 is released if they want to cause any real waves.
Keyboard and mouse? If you could make it work with me sitting on my couch and have it feel natural please do it. I am a 100 times better playing FPS with keyboard and mouse. I just do not see it happening. - jdavid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i dont know how many of you troll research sites, but MS can be an interesting one from time to time. Several years ago when i was working on speaker recognition systems for a class project, i came across a video system that could detect human behavior and gestures. With the xbox, vision coming out, I would think that MS is hinting that the vision will become a big part of future gaming.
Imagine a game where leaning is part of the control mechanism, lean left right forward or back to shift balance on a motorcycle. Or, a RolePlayingGame where waving your hand a particular way enacts a spell. Even further options could include motion and voice, like waving your hand and then saying abbacadabra, to open a door.
Sony demonstrated an interface that used cards, imagine an interface that is a blend of special cards, augmented reality, and paper like leapfrog's pen uses. You now have a dynamic set of cards and paper where you can draw your own functionality.
MS definitly has the research to back up some cool stuff, it is a matter of them delivering on it in a creative and fun way.
MS also has the ability to upgrade any game through xbox live, so any new control mechanism, can be integrated into old games.
XBOX LIVE ROCKS!!!!
If competition does anything, it will continue to keep these three great companies on their toes, i am going to have all three consoles I think. - inajeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Flaws and faults? My 3 wireless 360 controllers work fine along with my wireless network(extender and about 5 other APs), baby monitor, wireless phone, logitech wireless controller for the xbox, 8 different remotes, bluetooth phones, PDA..... I don't see any problems. I agree with tdogg241 and point your blame cannon somewhere more likely, on a bum controller.
- pepperell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You could use some system of gyroscopes to force-tilt the controller.
- dogoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4SIMPLER!?!?! what about the 360 controller is not simple!?
- Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The problem with alternative controllers is software support. Games are made to be playable on the controller that ships with the console.
- natefisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As much as a Nintendo fanboy I am I do not know how simple the Wii controller will be until I have it my hands. Sorry but I am not sold yet. Too many conflicting reports on it being over-sensitive. I am not trying badmouth what could be second-coming of gaming but let me play it before I convert. What I think that Moore is doing is that he is starting to eye that non-gaming market just like Nintendo.
Again the 360 controller is a very nice controller. - danielrh9, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11His words on May 11th of this year: "People are going to buy two [machines]. They're going to buy an Xbox and they're going to buy a Wii ... for the price of one PS3."
So he reccomends the Wii, and then turns around barely more than a month later to talk trash about it? Peter Moore is full of marketing crap. - diggAl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I really like the 360 controller as it is right now... EXCEPT for the directional pad. I think my favorite d-pad so far was on the six-button Sega Genesis controller. If I remember correctly, it was spot-on perfect.
For those who wonder why I care about the d-pad at all, I offer this response: Street Fighter 2: Hyper Fighting on Xbox Live Arcade. - whisperedlie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3regardless of whether or not mouse and keyboard more simple or not, this needs to be done. It's a simple extra peripheral. people that wnat them will buy it, and those who prefer the gamepad won't. everyone's happy. it's not like those that wish for a mouse/keyboard number only a tiny handful.
also, while you may be able to connect to a mouse or keyboard to the xbox360 via USB, games don't support it in actual gameplay. - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was just thinking about Geometry Wars and a new, simple, Xbox Arcade controller, and I got a scary thought...
Virtual Boy controller with joysticks instead of d-pads, anyone? >_> - Seidoger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would see it difficult to bring a new simpler controller now that the console is a few months old. They would still need all the buttons for the current games i suppose..
And if you need controller A for those games and controller B for that other group of games it isn't a wise marketing scheme for advertising "simplicity"
My $0.02 - EvlD99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@sonicblue
I hate to tell you but the Nintendo game pricing strategy is the EXACT same as the Microsoft one. 1st party Titles are 49.99 (Kameo, Perfect Dark, & Project Gotham) and third parties are free to choose their own price. If you wan't third party Wii games you will pay $60 for many of them. - WinterSolstice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How about real force-feedback? The kind that used to be all over a few years ago? Maybe MS has the money to go beyond the stupid vibration stuff.
-WS - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Peter Moore's comments sound like jealousy to me. He's turning green over all the attention the Wii is getting."
Nah, it's just Microsoft's time-tested strategy: disparage the competition's ideas, then copy them. Freedom to Innovate. - NYC10004, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5He's not talking trash. He's looking at the US demographic and being real. How long do you think non-athletic users are going to focus on a game if they have to move around all the time? Wii's a great concept but people are lazy dude.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like the current controller as it is...maybe they should update the headsets so that if they break you can just buy another headset...not the entire module
- Palmer586, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can see the point he makes though. But people get bored of all consoles, just because it has something different won't change that.
I don't think he's trying to downplay it, he's just being realistic.
Not like were all going to be wii addicts for 20 years because it has a new controller, hell, the dualshock didn't amaze me that much when it came out, so why should this? - Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Atari controller (also used unaltered on the Atari 800 and the Commodore VIC and 64, then the Atari ST and Amiga) was a great thing, but there was no doubt even on many old games that it was inadequate. Missile Command was not as good when you couldn't choose which of the three bases you were shooting from.
Programmers did a great job working around the limitations, but every knew they were limited.
I think my favorite controllers are the Genesis and SNES. After that, things got complicated.
It's a hard problem. I want simple, but I like dual analogs. Under-controller triggers work well, but they add to the confusion.
Look at how much trouble you have putting a shooter on the PSP because it only has one analog. A tough problem.
I like Nintendo's innovation. I thought the touchscreen was going to be a gimmick on the DS, but it actually made a lot of games better than they might have been.
I haven't tried the Wii controller, but the people I've talked to that have really like it. It makes people smile. It sounded stupid when I heard about it, yet people that play with it almost always like it. - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2" I think the Xbox 360 controler has a perfect layout, I mean there are only 6 buttons plus the triggers, that's not that bad. "
Plus nowhere dictates that a game must use EVERY button on the controller. In my mind, the 360 controller is the best out there because it is the most ergonomic while also containing the optimal numer of buttons on the pad and the shoulders. It allows for the most flexibility across the largest ranges of games. - Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Peter Moore's comments sound like jealousy to me. He's turning green over all the attention the Wii is getting.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Its to clunky, ever pass around a mouse and keyboard or sit on a couch with one with three or four other guys? not going to work well.
