- UncleCrapper, on 10/12/2007, -8/+57Sounds like some systems were shipped with faulty fans. My PS3 is almost entirely silent most of the time time and even when the fan is running at full speed, you have really strain to hear it.
If a fan issue is the only hardware problem the PS3 has then it is nothing compared to what I've gone through with my Xbox 360; noisy DVD ROM drives, noisy fans, the "ring of death", bad hard drives, you name it, it's happened in the last year and a half. After my third replacement Microsoft seems to have worked out most of the hardware issues as this unit features a new, quiet DVD ROM drive and has been working for the last few months without issue. Microsoft has absolutely NOTHING to gloat about in regards to 360 hardware reliability, because it just ain't there in my mind.
I love my 360 and my PS3, but at the moment the 360 isn't winning any awards for reliabilty. Let's see how the PS3 does after a year. - rewen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36the porn thing turned out to be false. you can now jerk it blu-ray
- ffejrey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35360s reliability? Are you kidding? Mine had to be sent in twice! So did my friends....
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26"I cant see how a single-range would be different than the others."
Because those in the range were manufactured together? That's the general use of serial numbers. - Metaridley, on 10/12/2007, -11/+34This is news? People have been whining ever since the PS3 came out.
- razrielle, on 10/12/2007, -9/+30macmcrae,
I see that you are compleatly unbiased and have an open opinion on any product thats mentioned on digg. I find the ps3, while not strong in the gaming area at the moment, a stepping stone in the gaming industry. While it might not have the library that the 360 does or the new control scheme the Wii does, it brings a new media format and a hunkered down computer into the living room, Its proving itslef useful as a research tool (folding) and also just for plain entertainment, every system has its faults and I can rekon that sony will fix this just as nintendo and microsoft have fixed their systems when they had defects - Dolomite, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26At least its not as bad as that god-awful XBox 360. The noise from an xBox 360 can drown out a blender.
- LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24I don't really see why all threads need to be pro-ps3, pro-360 or pro-wii (or anti for that matter).
Problems suck, they REALLY do, but that has very little impact on the quality of games for the system or it's potential to create fun.
I'm sending my THIRD 360 back (3 red lights, hdd error, dirty disc errors - respectively) but I still think it's one of the best purchases i've ever made on a system. I wish they didn't ***** break so often but some defects shouldn't have an impact on whether or not a system is totally ***** garbage. If anything I blame microsoft's Quality Control during manufacturing more than anyone. - UncleCrapper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21@m3th0dm4n
How the hell is the red ring of death "user error"? Please enlighten me as to how I should hold the controller or press the power button so as to eliminate this fault from ever ocurring again. And don't start with ventilation. The unit and power brick sit out in the open off the floor with plenty of ventilation. - MonkeyMCSE, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22power brick outside the case? I just bought a PS3 and I don't have a power brick, it's a regular 3 pronged cable. Am I missing the sarcasm you're pointing at the Xbox360 and it's huge brick outside of the case?
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19"Yea well at least MS admits it and will do what they can to help out right away."
No, they don't. It took months of negative press before MS backpedaled and started offering retroactive repair refunds. Had there not been such a public uproar about it, do you really think MS would have done the right thing at all? (hint: the answer is no). - razrielle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Tell me something, do you really want HD porn?
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Ditto here. Ps3, wii and 360 owner...
Wii had to be repaired once. 360 has been back THREE times (store, not microsoft). Ps3 is completely silent and runs perfectly, in fact I keep it in my bedroom because it is the quietest of the consoles. Also the fact that the 360 could cook a pizza doesn't help either.. the ps3 is relatively cool.
Oddly, I find myself playing the ps3 more than the other two despite my love for worms and outpost kaloki X (and formerly gears before the ***** update). The wii still sits there waiting for a decent game to come out for it :( Honestly, I used to be a MASSIVE nintendo fanboy and a die-hard sony-hater but... yeah, I just get more out of the ps3, and the 360 is essentially a glorified media center (for me at this time). - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15"if I just spent $600 on a machine that won't have any good games until 3 years from now - I would be cranky too."
Yeah, that would suck if it ever happened *goes back to enjoying Motorstorm* - g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Why shouldn't it come with a freebie? My first 2 360's doubled as space heaters.
- ChristianBk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Glad to hear my unit doesn't have the high pitch (couldn't hear it but checked the serial number anyway).
Though, what's funky is that whenever I plug in my DS Lite to the charger THAT emits a VERY noticeable high pitch for several minutes. Then it stops. - manfrin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15"After my third replacement Microsoft seems to have worked out most of the hardware issues"
So what you're saying is, that in light of hardware issues, Microsoft has replaced your machine twice? And you're saying they're being proactive in fixing problems?
That's what this story is about, Sony is unwilling to fix problems or replace machines. This has nothing to do with mud-slinging. - Boeing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13"includes a bonus high-pitched whine"
Sounds like every girlfriend I have ever had. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14*turns PS3 on*
No whine here.
Plenty of wine though.
*hiccup* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -27/+37Sheesh the ps3 fud is deep in here. So the wii owns the world and the ps3 is a pile - o - *****. Umkay. There should be a separate ANTI p3s section to go along with the nintendo section.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13It's funny, people were insisting that the PS3 was going to be faulty before it was in consumer hands. They were saying it was going to be loud with otherheating problems. It's had none of that except in this rare instance (in which it's probably still quieter than a 360).
And you know the really pathetic thing? All these retards who lap at the balls of ars, enggadget, etc. It's obvious that this site exists purely to funnel hits into those websites. - fplouffe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11You sir are just unable to differentiate a Xbox360 from a PS3 or you are just a liar.
- mr_bako2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10motorstorm surprised me too, i went into a gamestop, and i hate racing games, and motorstorm seems to me like the absolute worst possible game they could put in a kiosk, and even STILL, i absolutely loved the game, that's what told me that the PS3 will improve a hell of alot.
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Your $800 dollar computer play PS3 games, blu-ray, or fold a work unit in 8 hours?!?! I really don't believe you.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I'd say 'don't quit your day job' but I am worried that you may say that your day job is 'stand up commedian'.
- FrozenKetchup, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I only play cartridge games, screw these new fangled gadgets, they seem to just cause headaches and rabid fanboy syndrome
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8*block*
One more down... - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Nintendo will issue another press release in 3 months time:
"Buy the new Wii HD"
following hot on the heels of
"Buy the yellow super pokemon edition wii"
Suckers. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11"I don't really see why all threads need to be pro-ps3, pro-360 or pro-wii (or anti for that matter)."
I agree, however I assume you are familiar with the story of the boy who cried wolf? Well the anti-Sony trolls have been crying wolf so long it's mixed the facts with fantasy so much so that you can just wholesale discard the lot of their *****. Call that fanboyism if you like, I call it justified cynicism. - Dolomite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10liar. diggers dont have girlfriends.
- PaiZuri, on 10/12/2007, -12/+17Looks like that stop by ars by the Xbox guys continues to pay off with more FUD...
The desperation to find hardware defects in the PS3 have become absolutely pathetic. - jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Actually an $800 isn't even playing games all that well.
- rcomegys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Oddly enough, my laptop does the same thing when doing something extremely processor intensive."
Processors don't whine. Crappy fans do.
That being said, I'm really glad my PS3 doesn't make this noise. - Sambone67, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5MAME all the way.
- Zoids, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Does your computer play blu-ray movies/games, include a cell processor and attempt to cure cancer?
I'm pretty sure your PC can only do one of the above.
Edit: Damn you staticneuron! - grve, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8yeah, rootkit :)
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10"uh oh, looks like the PS3 fanboys showed up and burried me.
THBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB!"
I find your lack of brain disturbing. - turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5but the real question is, will it blend? (the 360)
- fonefoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I had the same exact issue with the 60 gb unit I bought last week. It's a VERY high pitch noise that -IS- coming from the fan. it sounds nothing like a fan spinning, more like an ear splitting high pitched frequency- which is pretty much what it is lol.
I was pretty upset because I at first was thinking this was what all the PS3s did and people just dealt with it.. but I couldn't accept that after only playing for 10 minutes and had the worst headache of my life. this is a sound that is actually impossible to mask by a good system. different sounds travel on different frequencies, this is not something you can drown out- I tried.
so anyway, I took the machine back to best buy and exchanged it for another and no more noise!
!!! my machine was not one listed in the serial number range mentioned so I wouldn't go off that. if you have this issue go take it back asap. the machine makes very little noise, so if you have this issue it is a bad fan !!! - wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -11/+11The defective Playstation 3 has a known serial-number range. I cant see how a single-range would be different than the others. Unhappy owners of the defective Playstation 3 havnt figured-out what the problem is, but those owners are returning their defective Playstation 3 to their original purchase location.
- jacobmp92, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Oddly enough, my laptop does the same thing when doing something extremely processor intensive.
I have a Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.0 ghz) and if I manage to put both cores to the max, it makes a quiet, but extremely high pitched whine. - staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3stung47000, I have all three systems and I have issues with none of them but just because we haven't had an issues with our systems makes other numerous people look like freak accidents.
- mobislink, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I'm digging this because I like how the on line community is providing valuable information. Just like the Guitar Hero 2 defect for the 360. The difference being that you have to filter out the PS3 bashing.
- ROFLance, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5link to noise:
http://www.mediafire.com/?cqmo5emnzmn - googzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"New PS3 systems may include a bonus high-pitched whine"
They all do - the sound comes from nearby disgruntled GC 1.5 owners that are grown tired of their Wii minigames. - NiGHTSChao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1exchange it at the store..?
- DeepFreezed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2so nice for them to put that is free of charge? anyone know how much this new feature cost?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Then you may want to check the air release valve. And get a newer model infaltable woman. They are better.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Considering you posted this 1 day 40 minutes ago i find laughable i posted this same info the same time it was released on http://www.engadget.com/ 4 days ago !!
Ass fyck !! - yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Do you think any company would do anything about a problem if there was a public uproar? money wise it doesn't make sense unless enough people have a problem.
look at the airline industry. they know there are certain faults in certain planes but do nothing about it because the cost of repairing some faults far outweighs what they would have to pay out in the event of death. -
