- SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was looking forward to the Cell processor and its 8 SPEs being more powerful than the 360s 3 core hyper-threading processor. But since one SPE has been disabled to improve chip yields, and 2 more are occupied with running the OS, that leaves only 5 SPEs left. So the Cell has 1 multipurpose cpu with 5 special purpose processors that can't be used for branching game logic, which is 90% or more of game code. While the 360s CPU general purpose can process 6 threads of general purpose code at once, making it much more powerful for branching game code and logic. The one thing that the Cells 5 SPEs are great at is encoding/decoding streaming data, such as playing bluray movies. It seems like Sony wants us to wait and pay more for a console that is a great bluray player, not necessarily the best game player.
- Hollister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Given that the Xbox 360's system memory is so much higher than the PS3's as well, Sony's new system seems to only be operating as a blu-ray trojan horse. Most people are not going to go for this because of various reasons (DRM.HDMI,etc.). Seems like this is the third strike for Sony and they got caught looking.

Solid article.. I think ultimately the benefits from having voice chat and video chat in the television will seriously outweigh any hinderance on the performance of the system.
And importantly pointed out: it all depends on how much the game relies on the hardware.
Any comment that this PS3 is gonna suck, because it has the similar effects a poorly maintained Windows system can have on a gaming PC is completely unfounded.
At this point in time.
