- Ydnar24, on 10/20/2007, -27/+118A new PS2 slim is only $129.00...
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+50>> WTF is this lame ass *****?
I see the whole point of emulation is lost on you. - jackpot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3512 FPS, not quite playable. Even the BIOS runs only at a blistering 18 FPS.
I'd like to know what kind of monster machine it takes to get those speeds. - hekar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23This is not new and could run FF10 for along time.
but as jackpot commented 12 FPS is not playable!!
especially when I have a Amd 3000+ with a Ati x700 pro and 1gb of ram - Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Actually it's not even close to being a new project. the oldest news on the site is from Aug 2005 and says "PCSX2 has been running for over three years now..."
- Riffz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12New? PCSX2 has been in development for at least 4 to 5 years.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16I guess the difference between SNES/ZSNES and PS2/this emulator is optical media. One can easily (and cheaply) install a modchip to the PS2 and burn games. For the SNES, blank media does not exist, so the only way to have a massive library of 'backups" is with a PC and ZSNES/SNES9X.
Truely a new PS2, modchip and DVD-Rs costs less than the PC required to make this barely usable. For SNES, it's cheaper to have a low-end PC with TV-out than the SNES itself and the games. - Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Feh. Some people just don't understand the 'niftiness' factor of things. Why do all things have to be useful? Why can't they just be nifty?
- Merkidemis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12The point is I already have a computer, this allows me to do more with it for no additional cost other then for the games.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@Ninjab3ar
Have you ever used an Intel Mac with Rosetta or are you just quoting crap you've heard from other people who haven't used one?
I use one every day for my work machine - and even under Rosetta applications run very quickly. The Adobe Creative Suite is at least as fast on my dual 2.0 GHz Xeon Mac Pro as they were on my Dual G5 machine. I hardly call that "deplorable"... Clearly native is better, but Rosetta is much faster than you would expect. - joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Considering its taking us longer to get a good Saturn and Dreamcast emulator, this is pretty good.
Of course, its far from final, but great progress - Bara, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9He was making a point. His computer is fairly decent and probably better than the specs of the PS2, yet he still gets 12 fps on a game that looks nowhere near as good as some pc titles (like FEAR, which I'm sure he can run at near max quality and still get over 30 fps)
- buckynekkid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Provided you have a fast enough PC, FFX is said to have the best compatibility with this emulator, and get full FPS. Kingdom Hearts is also said to run well. The newest releases will give big performance boosts with a multi-core CPU. This article really got my hopes up that they updated it again, but I guess kitkatsavvy just discovered this emu and figured he'd share.
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7lukas wtf are you talking about. most emulators are stable with the exception of current and next gen emus. theres perfectly working emulators out there for a multitude of systems, zsnes and snes9x have been stable for like i dunno almost 6 years now. out of the 80 or so nes emulators the only game that doesnt work on most of them is solar jetman. hell n64 is emulated at 97% then theres the old old stuff. theres working emus for 3d0 vectex, atari 26 52 and 7800 sega master system sega genesis sega saturn sega dreamcast (semi working but still better than pcsx2) gameboy color/pocket/advance. the ds emulator even works with some games.tg-16 wonderswan fairchild zircon channel f the list goes on.
- zediker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8oh, its much better than the ps2 specs, by about 10x the clock rate, but the fact is, its emulating the ps2 hardware with software, so its going to be much much slower.
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6not new by a long shot
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10@Bara
But dont forget that the computer has to translate the info and all that technical whatnot in order to emulate the PS2 (Compare it to Intel Macs and their deplorable performance while using Rosetta). Not to mention, the PS2 doesnt need to run a full feldged Operating system as it plays the games, nor does it have to run any background processes.
Unlike the PS2 which is only playing the game, the PC is multitasking to the limit. - buckynekkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The DC emu, Chankast, is about as far along as this PS2 emulator (if not further). Unfortunately, I think that project has been abandoned. As far as the Saturn goes, there are emus that will do almost the entire Saturn library (with a few graphical glitches).
- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -16/+22Why did him down? I mean, you have to buy a couple thousand dollar machine to get this emulator to be functional (not quite playable). I can understand emulators for things long past for nostalgic reason but come on, the ps2 is still in the stores.. I bet you can find em used for 50 bucks. If you want to play games that you download you can just mod out your full real ps2. I dunno Ydnar24.. I'm with you on this one.
- trunk8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There is something to be said about emulating PS2 games. I'm interested in it, not because I'm not satisfied playing them on my PS2...but because this means (or could eventually mean) being able to play PS2 games on a laptop while on the road. Sure, PS2's are cheap....but you can't exactly whip out your PS2 while away from home and start playing...not without a wall plug..........and a TV, or one of those PS2 LCD screens. If I could play Kingdom Hearts or Kingdom Hearts II on my laptop during a flight across the country, I'd be in heaven.
- cyberpope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You guys realize that 0.9.2 r2 has been out for a while now, right?
- paintball102089, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5its not illegal if you own the console and the games
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Guitar Hero is heavily dependent on precision timing. Don't count on it.
- chopsticks765, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Also dont forget the ps2's EE is a 128-bit processor. Itd take four complete 32-bit cycles for full 128-bit addressing. That and the fact that the cpu is also emulating the GS at the same time, which is probably why multicore runs alot better.
- pdiddle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"So if you want to play PS2 games that badly just get a console! Unlike older emulators the PS2 is after all still in production and would remain for a couple more years."
What if we already own a ps2 that has stopped working and would like to continue playing our games and new ones without needing to shell out for another console? Not to mention the obvious benefits to be playing on a PC and not needing to use a TV to continue playing our games. PS2 emulation is important for all the reason older console emulation is important. - benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4actually i was talking with one of the devs on irc and he mentioned that sony is being pissy with them and one of the top guys may have to leave the country hes in if they want to continue development.
- joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@buckynekkid -- I almost said the same thing to you earlier :)
@kevin45 - I guess we shouldn't emulate the NES, SNES, and Genesis since those are cheap too. I already have a Dreamcast and love it, but it's always nice to have an emulator in the future when all our machines die. - buckynekkid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@joehobbes: Nice avatar
@kevin: I have a dream of having a Super PC VG jukebox that plays PSX, PS2, GC, N64, DC, MAME, TG-16, CPS-1/2, SNK, Xbox, and all other last gen games, with higher-res and sharper textures when possible. It would be a glorious entertainment center addition (and probably never happen)... that's why hold breath. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I own a real PS2 but I'm glad to see this project advancing because in about 5 years it's going to be damn hard to find a working PS2. (and I don't want a PS3)
- socalrob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6You guys also have to remember that emulation works mainly on the CPU. Unless they are coding them differently now. My Laptop runs a N64 emulator great but cant play crap for normal 3D games. So that ATI you mentioned there may be a bit of a brag statement.
Just remember what your emulating, a 300mhz processor, the GPU's, all the I/O systems, and this is all done in software not hardware. Taxing on any processor. I'm running a 3ghz dual core at home, and it would probably only eek out just a few more frames, nothing to write home about though. The new CPU's coming out from AMD and Intel will probably be much better in processing performance wise to handle these next generation of emulators. It's just awesome that they got one to run at all! - toasty168, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I suprised Sony hasn't come out of the closet and pissed all over this project.
- Aninhumer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I imagine a single ps2 instruction is probably going to take more than four cycles regardless of it being 128-bit

Check out her profile page-- half of the 4 stories she's submitted are complaints about how unfair Digg is.
Now she freaks out over getting a front page story. Why don't you go back to Myspace, ya tard. - sancho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I own a PS2 and am still interested in the emulator. The reason? I want to be able to carry my notebook and a few games with me wherever I go, rather than a PS2, games, LCD.
Of course, it will require quite a beefy machine to be able to do that, but it's still a pretty decent (and valid) reason for wanting emulation. Convenience. - buckynekkid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Haha. That was funny as hell. The C&H snow sculptures will never be usurped as the ultimate in humour, though.
- geoffreyireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bleh after seeing some FPS I will pass.
- pdiddle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ya I've played and finished FFX on this emulator, its actually quite decent. There are a couple of infinite loops you might run into but theyre generally fixed if yiou attempt the same section again, save states can cause problems. Also I noticed in certain battles certain characters were facing backwards which also lead to an infinte loop when i tried to do a limit break (auron's). FMVs are also blocky but acceptable.
I also got well playable speeds, but mainly because of the dual core support with 0.9.2, it gives roughly twice the fps as usual (~30fps with a X2 3800+ and 6600GT). Of course the code really isnt optimised at all yet, theyre concentrating on getting the games to run first. - ohearn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2With games being on optical media that your PC can read for the last generation or two of consoles, Sony may not mind too much. Remember the most manufacturers make all the money off of games, not hardware. Now they will probably go buts on the guys running ROM sites for the PS2. If an emulator means more games get sold, then Sony may actually like this in the end.
- wankerface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You don't need to legally own a PS2, it should work properly with ISO files and a dump of someone else's BIOS, which is sure to be up online soon if not already. The ethics are for you to sort out.
- cg0def, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you know all that stuff about having to emulate 128bit addressing and that emulation is a lot slower than native is true but at the end of the day a ps2 with a modchip would run you ~$180 these days and considering that you would need to considerably beef up your PC in order to run PS2 games in emulator it makes no sense creating one. Also there is a huge difference between the Roseta emulation where EVERYTHING is documented and the coding is done by arguably some of the best coders in the world and this project where the emulation has to guess a lot of the specs and all the work is done as a hobby than as a job with strict requirements for quality and strict deadlines.
So if you want to play PS2 games that badly just get a console! Unlike older emulators the PS2 is after all still in production and would remain for a couple more years. - kitkatsavvy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ill tell you guys how to get the bios files when i get back from work.... they are on my info page on my website .. www.psychopanic.com/info.php
you need bios files.. ok seeya im gonna be LATe - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You need to legally own a PS2 (to transfer PS2 BIOS files) and PS2 games (to rip onto your hard drive or play directly from your optical drive).
- android8675, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My vote goes for: For the amount of time invested in getting this emulator to work you can earn enough money mowing lawns to buy a new or used ps2 and a tuner card so you can display your PS2 on your PC, and you won't need an overclocked anything to run it.
- harpwn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm sure nobody downloads games they don't own.
- Renolc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got my copy of Monster Hunter to play at a constant 40 FPS on my mediocre desktop.
Pretty darn good if you ask me. - Picciuto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i have a question about the website. on the screenshot page, what is the technology used to bring up the large images? is that javascript?
- abacadabbra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Elranzer thats not true there where or still may be blank carts or flash carts for the snes, there are flash cards for pretty much all the old systems, how easy they are to get ahold of is a different story.
- SSYe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want to go "...... "but i can't.
thanks for the info, now finally i'll play socom - xenozohar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The BIOS runs at full FPS for me. Going to dump some of my games and try to see if any of them are playable. Activating dual core mode in the emulator made a huge difference in FPS for me at least.
