How could the controllers let you simulate biting off someone ear? Some sort of special in-mouth accessory pack perhaps? - imav, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31God forbid they have to come up with games that are unique and fun to play instead of wowing everyone with amazing graphics.
- steger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22oh man, Mike Tyson's Punch Out 2007.
- Kiel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18480p is good enough for me
- axonal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16"My name isn't Adam Wii... Or is it? Who am I? Stop calling here."
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18“As for graphics, we'll be showing Madden in 480p and 16x9 widescreen mode running at 60 frames per second."
Sounds like the graphics won't be as simple as that old IGN blog lead people to believe. - Pocky, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17@psxman to be fair it really wasn't funny then either.
- corduroy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13so... you're implying that watching a regular dvd on hdtv looks like tetris also? because you know... dvd's run at 852x480 also. 720p would have looked nicer (I would have preferred it), but let's not kid ourselves: 852x480 (widescreen 480p) is going to look good also.
- drougnor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Not everyone can afford to drop close to a grand to startup with the latest and greatest gaming system the day it comes out, and Nintendo is going to capitalize on that like MAD! The pricepoint allowed by not jumping on the 'OMGWTFBBQ!!!11LOLZZ!!'Graphics bandwagon means that they'll A) be able to have more boxes for sale at release, and B) Guarentee that those boxes will MOVE like mad! Add to the fact that there are going to be TONS of quality games coming out that will wow by quality of GAME PLAY vs eye candy, but bore the ***** out of you play, and you have a winning console.
Sony and MS may survive due to their deep pockets being able to subsidise the costs of their consoles in this gen, but in the end, I think the math will show Nintendo dominating this time. The sales numbers are just going to be amazing. - ahdustin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Looks awesome. I am also invisioning a boxing game. Use both controllers as your cuffs. The joystick is used to look around and you punch with both controllers. Could be awesome.
- STKD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I can just see the headlines now if they don't change it soon...
"Nintendo's `Wii` Leaves Bad Taste in Fans Mouths." - ZephyrWest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8http://www.revolutionreport.com/articles/read/402
Article dated 4/25/06 - Macabre216, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wow I for one can't wait for more wii leaks.
- psxman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Y'know, that joke was funny... about six months ago. Now it's just old.
- X18999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You might get lucky and score some points!
- cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"My name's not Adam Wii...or is it? who are you? how did u get this number? never call here again!! i showed him! no one messes with Adam Wii ..."
Not to one up you :p - Kiel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7i think the gameplay possibilities with the new interfaces are enough of an upgrade. And if its as cheep as its being reported, then you'll be able to play the same old FPS with more polygons and shinier textures on one of the other consoles as well
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Well in all fairness, YOU didn't provide a link to the original either.
Glass houses dude, glass houses. - Neme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6As a big FPS fan, you could be using the Wii controller to shoot far more effectively than a keyboard and mouse. ;)
Or just use a PC. - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"The accelerometers in the nunchuck unit will differ from the controller in that it only senses movement. If you hold the nunchuck still, it’s the same as not pushing a button."
I think that makes it fairly clear that a boxing gaming using a controller and nunchuck wouldn't allow you to easily position 2 fists independently.
However, nobody ever said you can't hold two main controllers at once, one in each hand. - JustEvk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11What's that my good sir? Do you mean to say the name "Wii" might be used as some sort of joke or pun? This is indeed exciting news!!!!!!!!!!
Gonna be a long console generation. - inkninja, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7According to the article, the nunchuck unit's motion detection is a toggle state ("moving"/"not moving") so it wouldn't offer the level of control required to translate your movements to punching. I'd love to be wrong about that, though! :)
- anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4480p is the resolution of DVDs so developers can definately can make things look good if they want to.
- daeyeth, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Anyone else love these new names?
"Madden Wii"
"Zelda Wii"
"Super Smash Brothers Wii"
"Metroid Prime Wii"
(not all of these names are confirmed, just pointing out the potential) - megaton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't think they'd throw away all that analog goodness of the accelerometer's inherent design just to make it act like toggles. If anything, that sort of thing would be done in software.
TaeBoX said: "I guess it takes ***** to know *****."
I don't believe he said he knew him. He does, however, now know you. - olliholliday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it doesn't say anywhere in that article (that i could see anyway, i read it a few times....) that the accelerometers are limited to moving/not moving - they make the distinction that unlike the main Wii controller there's no means to calculate it's position - only whether it's moving or not. I imagine it will still know to a certain degree how fast you're moving it, maybe even in more than one axis.
Here's hoping that the Wii control system realllly is as good as it looks like it could be. I'm getting pretty giddy about Wii in a way I never have over consoles before.... but i can just imagine it being very limited and all massively over hyped... - Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, it's a question a non-American would ask, in Australia, we call that "selling the dummy" or "dummying"
Different terms, same thing. - sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm not 100% re: the lightsaber swinging, but I think you are confusing the main "remote" piece of the controller with the add-on "nunchuku" part of the controller. The remote part has i think always known to have an accelerometer, but recently people have been wondering if the add on would measure movement speed as well.
edit: damn, i got beat to it. - xaxxon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is the shown controller config for left-handed people? That's surely not how I'd want to play Madden. I would want the nunchuck in my right hand because I throw (at least I did that one time I went into the Big Blue Room) with my right hand.
The nunchuck is shaped, so it looks like it will only fit comfortably in one hand or the other. - JestaMcMerv, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Nintendo's target audience for the Wii do not own HDTVs. The Wii is a great second system... while trying to attract non gamers to the market.
- gahal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So what happens when you get pissed and huck it across the room?
- durandal2005, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The accelerometers comment was referring to the "nunchaku" attachment (the one with the joystick).
- TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really hope that force feedback is more than just a rumble pack. It would be amazing to have a drastic recoil after shooting a handgun, feel a steady vibration from a mounted machine gun, or have a sword bounce back after hitting metal.
- schmedly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"480p is the resolution of DVDs so developers can definately can make things look good if they want to."
DVD is 480i. Anything more is the DVD player, not the source material. Also, full motion playback has nothing to do with rendering a scene using polygons. - ahdustin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That would be sweet. You could throw the football by throwing the axillary controller. It's just gotta' have a really tight connection. These kind of advances are really going to bring Nintendo back.
- WillyWonka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It detects how fast you're moving the controller. They have tilt sensors to tell the angle and then on the one side position sensors to tell where it is in the room.
- fiveoaks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone else think the cord joining the controller and nunchuku thing is way too short? It seems like it should be at least as long as your wingspan so you could really get a good swing going.
- Johnny1337h4x0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was an article with photos about this. The chord is long enough to have both of your arms out.
- TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ninjas never used nunchuku. Nunchukus were just used in movies and have no historical background.
- tjdoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So what the hell is an accelerometor?
And I'm being serious. Couldn't really catch it in the article. - DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DVDs run at 720x480 *stretched* to 852x480. There's a difference. Luckily Revolution (yes Revolution) will be able to do that too, just like Xbox, GC, and PS2 have already done. You've seen it if you've ever turned on 16:9 mode and the screen got squished, on a 4:3 TV or before you switched the TV to 16:9. (F-Zero GX, TimeSplitters 3, for example)
- dogside, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1An accelerometor is a device that measures acceleration, as in, how fast it is moving. Unlike the main controller, which has all the gyroscopes and what not, the added on nunchuck device seems like it is only going to measure its acceleration, or possibly, its own position in time. Accelerometers can work in up to 3 dimensions eg X, Y and Z. The controller add on may have someimportance being located in some position in space, compared to the main controller which has gyroscopes, and some type of pointing device, which would be used to point, and probably some type of mand movments, like moving side to side, or flicking it up and down.
- voodooatl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As I recall there were some comments at last years E3 about the controller(s) working in left or right hands
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Only a question a nerd would ask.
Juke means to dodge or feign a movement on one direction only to act in the other direction. Used in sports context often. - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"According to the article, the nunchuck unit's motion detection is a toggle state ("moving"/"not moving") "
Then it wouldn't be an accelerometer. An accelerometer normally tells you how fast the movement is changing, not that it is moving (which I think would be really hard to do). Perhaps the acceleration is a sort-of toggle state (accelerating left/right and up/down). That would be enough to make a pretty versatile input device for a video game. - iamsam, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I can't wait to see the first news report of someone hurting themselves or someone else while playing the Wii. heh
- solarisom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm interested to see how the Wii controller's gonna be used in Smash Bros for combos and such, hope there's a Sonic debut!
- mjparker75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm curious about this too. Throwing a curveball with a right handed pitcher for a lefty like me, might get a bit confusing. I was worried about this with the DS too... and was right. Trying to play Metroid DS is a pain in the butt. They added the option to use the buttons as a D-pad, but c'mon, it's just not the same. I think this'll be less of a problem with the wii- but it'll still be wiierd.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nice job capitalizing on the already stale jokes. Really, it seems to be well within your style.
- FuManchuX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's also worth noting that the Wii (nee Revolution) should have the capability in place to support additional 'magic' controllers sporting different interfaces.
I can forsee additional controller sets for things like a Punch-Out game. Not unlike the 'Bongo' controller they released for Gamecube. -
