- Kenelm, on 08/01/2008, -3/+85Title pretty inaccurate, this is pure speculation.
- airwalkery2k, on 08/01/2008, -3/+78It's not impossible, but I would be totally surprised. It doesn't feel like the DS is at the end of its life yet.
- basye, on 08/01/2008, -2/+68*****, don't tell my kids.
*shuts down internet* - DiGiLifeX, on 08/01/2008, -5/+44hahaha this article makes me laugh. Sorry if i'm wrong but unless Nintendo changed the way they bring new products to market, a new hand held that was not announced at E3 is very unlikely to be released this year. If you want to be realistic about this, whats likely to happen is Nintendo will release a NEW yellow Pokemon edition or (insert color and popular game) theme DS for the holidays. Now watch how the sales pick up in japan. Problem solved. :) New DS2 hardware... hehehe silly little person it's ok I know it hurts when you think.
- seanthebond, on 08/01/2008, -0/+37They should keep with the dual-screens, and bump up the graphics, while making sure they don't make the new handheld cost over $200 USD.
- Frozenfuryblade, on 08/02/2008, -0/+28Analysts=*****.
Ever notice how whenever an analyst gets one thing right its all over the news? Its because they rarely get anything right.
Who pays these guys? - nymphetamine, on 08/02/2008, -0/+24Now with WPA support!
- inactive, on 08/02/2008, -6/+26...but will it print money?
- doshindude, on 08/02/2008, -1/+20One word to disprove the article that the title left out:
Analyst. - EtherGnat, on 08/02/2008, -0/+16Yeah, that'd be almost like virtual reality or something. They could call it the Virtual Boy.
- ShellShock11, on 08/02/2008, -1/+16Note: It will support copy/paste.
- reyoo30309, on 08/01/2008, -0/+14If I had to guess, I would assume that this is just another version of the ds. Nintendo handhelds have a very long shelf life.
- finn, on 08/02/2008, -0/+13buried; the DS is far from death, and this article is pure speculation
- dillhole, on 08/02/2008, -1/+11Virtual Boy 2!
- inactive, on 08/02/2008, -0/+10Holy wrongness.
The GBA came out in 2001, the GBA SP came out in 2003, and the Gameboy Micro came out in 2005.
So not only is the GBA not even 8 years old(it pretty much died last year), the Gameboy Micro came out in its 4th year. - BlueSkyfish, on 08/02/2008, -1/+10Spoilers: E3 is dead. I doubt it will come out this year, but if it is, they'd announce it at the Tokyo Game Show.
- Eallan, on 08/02/2008, -2/+11Bumping up the graphics is not really Nintendo's style.
- whahaa, on 08/02/2008, -0/+9good question. i would like to know the answer because i would like be paid for my ***** predictions as well.
gaming/hollywood/internet/tech/sci-fi/digg/nerd analyst for hire, right here. pay me.
i know what i'm talking about, and i'm right some of the time. - inactive, on 08/02/2008, -0/+6Going by American Release Dates:
Gameboy - August 1989
Gameboy Color - November 1998
Gameboy Advance - June 11, 2001
Nintendo DS - November 21, 2004
3 years isn't terribly long. The systems are well supported after the three years, but it seemed they were pumping out out on a every 3 year basis for awhile. - inactive, on 08/02/2008, -0/+6Dont forget Gameboy Pocket, Super Gameboy, Gameboy Advanced SP, Gameboy Advanced Micro, GB Player, DS lite.
- mnky9800n, on 08/02/2008, -0/+6Well seeing how long the gameboy lasted I totally agree with you.
- inactive, on 08/02/2008, -0/+6I didn't put in console redesigns, but if you want, the SP was released about a year and a half before the original DS. Which helps support a DS 2 theory, since the end of the year would be the same thing.
- AVigorVermin, on 08/02/2008, -1/+6crysis ds...might look like a crappy halo
- Zarokima, on 08/02/2008, -0/+5That, and the GBA was just another iteration of the GB, which lasted a good 15 years before the DS. The next DS is going to be another iteration of roughly the same thing, just with some added stuff, much like what the Gameboy went through.
- TheShom, on 08/02/2008, -0/+5You forgot Game Boy Pocket - 1996
- Nosyn, on 08/02/2008, -0/+5This "meme" is getting old way to quickly... Go back to 4chan please.
- DarkDx, on 08/02/2008, -1/+6I almost have a seizure watching wii music.
In fact, I think my IQ dropped 30 points after watching that. - SaladCactusKing, on 08/02/2008, -1/+5With our luck lately, It'll be called "Wii Touch" and "Wii Sports: Finger Edition" will be the first game out.
God help us Nintendo fans. - Farmer77, on 08/02/2008, -3/+7Yup, it's all about the....gameplay....
*very very dry cough* - chaosblade77, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4Which makes sense considering the Gamecube was more powerful than the PS2. The difference was the architecture, the PS2 was more efficient due to the vector units and larger disk. When it comes down to it, neither console had much of an advantage over the other with the exception of the GCN mini-disks leading to less content. Often it meant games had to be compressed more than they would on the Xbox or PS2, leading to potentially slow loading times/bad framerates, lesser graphics, or less content in general (which is why PS2 ports of GCN games often had "extra features").
And the PS1 just had more developers pushing the console than the less popular N64. If you look up the specs for the consoles, the difference between the PS1 and N64 is laughable. It's like comparing the Dreamcast to the Xbox. The only aspect of the hardware that the PS1 outclassed the N64 was storage medium, which is what led to it's popularity.
I think the PS1 and PS2 are great examples of games (and wise executive decisions), not hardware, winning the console war. - maximumsteve1, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4agreed, this angered me that it made front page. Pure speculation AND poor speculation. These 'analysts' should be fired. Nintendo has never just released a new system just like that w/o any buzz or hype and not giving any 3rd parties time to develop for the system. It's a well known bad business model throughout the industry. Only sega circa 1995 would do something so foolish.
buried. - Elranzer, on 08/02/2008, -3/+7Yeah cuz the Gamecube wasn't better looking than the PS2, N64 better looking than PS1*, or SNES better looking than the Genesis. Right...
* (Refers to in-game graphics, not FMVs) - WhereAmI, on 08/01/2008, -4/+8I agree that the PSP and DS are getting at their end and think they will be retired and replaced soon but I highly doubt by the end of this year.
This is speculation by Michael Pachter, he says alot of things and is only sometimes right. Another thing he said not that long ago was there would be a 300$ PS3 this year. Haven't seen or heard about it from anyone since. - Abatrour, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4Gameboy Micro
- aywwts4, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4Yeah, right.
They kept that third tier crap up when it was getting criticized, people were talking about the system with words like "wonky" "gimmicky" and" "It's a game and watch" and it was only getting unfavorably compared to the PSP in terms of horsepower. And all of it's game lineup had the words "tech demo" somewhere in the reviewset
Then it started printing money, nintendogs, nsmb, mario kart, ds lite, etc. It broke sales records around the world and you never heard another peep about a third tier ever again.
Also, on your final point, Has Nintendo made anything lately that wasnt backwards compatible with the previous gen? and when they do it they usually do it on the hardware level. - Wingdom, on 08/02/2008, -2/+6We all know that E3 this year was a joke, and no real announcements were made, just a few new trailers.
I think a hardware refresh for the DS would be a good idea. Slimmer, bigger screens, better graphics, longer battery life, things along those lines. I think they should stay with the same size cartridge and not make a jump like they did with the GB to the GBA. I would love iPhone sized screens on my DS, and multitouch anyone? - Nephersir7, on 08/02/2008, -2/+5My Ds lite just stopped working today (total wreck). good news
- Eezyville, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3There's still at least 5 more Pokemon games to go.
- inactive, on 08/03/2008, -1/+4DAMN YOU! TURN MY INTERNETS BACK ON!
- vagarach, on 08/02/2008, -2/+5nm.
- smacksaw, on 08/02/2008, -1/+4Actually, that's more of a PROTIP than a spoiler. It's not really a movie/TV show or HP book, while PROTIP is relevant to video games.
- dragon76, on 08/02/2008, -1/+4Nintendo has said several times that the DS was not a Gameboy successor but a new category and that there would be another Gameboy, but unless this new one runs DS games, I think we're going to have another Virtual Boy on our hands.
- Zapita, on 08/02/2008, -0/+3if it happens, just will be a renewed DS
- kevro, on 08/02/2008, -0/+3game and watch 2009
- TrevorBelmont, on 08/02/2008, -0/+3You had me wondering what a Hewlett Packard book is for several seconds.
- BradleyNowell1, on 08/02/2008, -0/+3Claim: "New Nintendo Handheld to Launch by Year's End"
Reality: "Nintendo may release a new handheld game console by year's end"
Anyone else sick of these headlines? - bduddy, on 08/02/2008, -2/+5Because then games would be incompatible and everyone would whine. One of the nice things about the original Game Boy is that it played GBC games, and although I didn't really pay attention back then, I'm sure that helped game sales-why go away from that?
- hellsing47, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2DAD TURN IT BACK ON
- inactive, on 08/02/2008, -0/+2Outsells all other consoles everywhere except japan, where its coming 2nd by a close amount to the psp, which it has outsold by 13 million units in japan.
Yes..fizzled..
It has even outsold the ps2 in japan. There simply are no more people in japan to buy the damn thing. -
