- Skettalee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26I played the first few levels on a friends system... I AGREE!!!
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25She should have given you two PSP's to make it fair!
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Well... the last week of my life lost to the game can't be wrong...
Running a business, family, hobbies.. Nope, sorry! Must play mario. *sigh* addictions are so hard to break. - nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I thought it was good, but nothing compared to Mario 3 or Super Mario World. There was so much they could have added. At least a leaf/cape item. Oh, and Yoshi. Fun game, but not the best.
- NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I ran out and bought it upon release day and I don't regret for a moment. New Super Mario Bros for the win! (NSMBFTW)
- BenClueless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I can't put it down, it's ridiculous. It has me giggling like an idiot one minute and cursing through gritted teeth the next. So fun, so frustrating. Multiplayer is amazing.
- pandasonic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I bougth a DS for my girlfriend (she got me a PSP) and after trying it out i must say that's one of the best games ever. I'm waiting for the DS Lite so I can get one.
- scruffmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Oh man...you guys keep tempting me...I'm gonna have to buy the DS just for this...must resist...must resist...
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Yeah, it's definitely not as difficult as a classic oldschool game.
But damn is it still so much fun. - blobber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I absolutely adore the game and have been playing on it for ages. There's a few damned hard levels that are particularly frustrating, not to mention coins that seem impossible to get to, but in general it's a real blast from the past.
If you want to get super power or spare lives, make sure the timer is on 88,77,66 etc. before launching Mario at the flag.
When you do unlock the lives, ensure that you save before going to the green mushroom houses as you can potentially score 3 single mushrooms, a x3 and then finally a x2 - earning 14 lives without doing much work.
BTW> Wii Lightsaber is gonna be a heap of fun.
It's gonna use a sweet spot when in a saber lock where you have to move the saber back and forth until you nail the sweet spot based on vibrations and the sounds. Whoever nails the sweet spot for longest wins.
if anyone cares :) - merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I love my DS, bought it the day it launched, picked up since then about 25 games, and have never been disappointed. I absolutely love the "New Super Mario Bros." ill go out on a limb and say its one of the greatest Mario games of all time. It has a little of everything from each Mario game, even the ass smash from Mario 64. Great level design, and awesome bad guys that are different almost every level. My only gripe is that i wish the levels were a bit longer, other then that this game is a system seller and i recommend it to anyone who loves video games.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5One thing I would like to know about the game is where are the koopa kids? There was a big digg story about the koopa kids being in the new super mario and all their was was bowser jr. That was kind of disappointing.. I was looking forward to the original koopa kids. Bowser Jr. is just a small version of bowser.. whoppie doo. Anyway, it was a great game that took not very long to beat, but I'll be try to collect everything in the game now.
One thing that I loved was on World 2-2 at the end of the level you can do the shell trick and get up to 99 lives! Now that brought me back to the original super mario bros on the NES.Besides the whole NES going out of bounds with funny characters with the lives once it got pass 100 (I don't believe they planned someone would get that many lives). - beefwellington, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'm buying a DS Lite for this game alone...can't wait!
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5New mario is good, but I personally think it's overrated a bit. I think I had more fun with most of these games:
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Mario Kart 64
Meteos
Kirby: Canvas Curse
Tetris DS
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Trauma Center: Under the Knife - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It still takes me well over a week to finish Mario 3, or Super Mario World.
- mercano, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6T-20 Days till DS Lite.
- jer.williams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Besides his traditional ability to grow super-large or spit fireballs, Mario can also eat a rare mini-mushroom that allows him to shrink down to micro-size..." (From Wired article)
Have I totally lost it? What previous title allowed Mario to grow super large? I thought that was new to this game. - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The game is amazing! I love it!
But... It's also too short. I beat it in 2 days with 100%. Anyone else feel it could have been longer? Or was it just me? - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I miss the leaf item, too.
I'm not complaining, though. The game was great fun. I just wish there was more! - mikeyeah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This game is really good and it reminds you of what got most of us into video games in the first place. This is a new classic and I can only hope that many more sequels are done in this class platform style with a touch of 3D.
Oh, the best part is when you close your DS while playing and then open it up again, Mario says, "Hey'a its'a me'a Mariooo." - jragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm usually not good enough to beat games and I flew through this one. Easy but incredibly fun.
And the multiplayer mode and mini-games is worth the entire game. - phantomAI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I really want to play this game. I haven't been great with portables (owned a gameboy color only to play it for 2 months). I'm getting this game the first day the DS Lite is released here in the US. Too bad the other colors aren't being released at launch. Classic Mario is back!
- Araya213, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Same here, just waiting for the Lite, obsessively.
- theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8DS for a PSP. That's an unfair trade!
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sorry, World 2-4, for some reason the edit didn't take.
- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree. I bought it the day it came out and beat it the day after! Woot!
- Noelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thus the "Super" in "Super Mario Bros." - if you recall - the original Mario Bros. for arcades did not have the mushrooms or fire flower, just the hammer that is also found in the original Donkey Kong. The giant mushroom is what's new to this game.
- SystemBomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2While I think the new mario is fun my vote would have to go to Mario Kart DS for the most fun I have had on the DS.
- JDoggqx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Brain Age is awesome. I picked it up the day it came out and I've played a little of it each day. It is so easy to pick up and play a quick training game or Sudoku puzzle. I even got my wife addicted to it! The problem now is she likes it so much that I can't leave my DS with NSMB in suspend as she has already turned it off to play Brain Age a couple of times (we've had a talk since then about DS etiquette.) When the Black DS Lite comes out here in the states I'll pick it up and pass my Mario Kart DS to my wife.
Anyway, Brain Age is a great, inexpensive game, and is great at getting people who have never played games to start. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I got the game a few days ago and have been really pleased with it. The combination of elements from all the different mario games is really nice, and the graphics are really great at capturing the feel of previous games, but I would have liked to see more powerups in the spirit of Mario 3.
I was also dissapointed that it doesn't include coop multiplayer (alternating lives) like the other games in the series. Advanced Wars DS has hot seat multiplay and it would have been a welcome addition to this game.
The minigames are a really nice touch and are a good way to waste a few minutes without getting in to the main game (where many levels take several tries to complete).
As far as it being the best DS game ever, I'd have to disagree. There are waaay too many great DS games in a lot of different genres for one game to be the best. It'd be like saying that apples are the best fruit.
p.s. Does anyone own Touch or True Swing golf? I've played the demo a few times and really liked it, but wasn't sure about the other courses in the game or the different modes of play. - blobber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@rodrigo
Actually most of the gaming press would have received a copy before E3. I'm not press but I scored a copy a few days before E3 thanks to a friend at Nintendo. Asking if I was one of the first outsiders to get a copy he said "no" and explained that they give press advanced copies to play with and get their reviews together on the day of, or just before the release.
The Wii3 hype was already gearing up before that, but in the negative (over the naming), so I doubt there's any special consideration. It really is quite a fun game with some great short-n-sweet multi-player games (for short train trips etc.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I thought it was good, but nothing compared to Mario 3 or Super Mario World. There was so much they could have added. At least a leaf/cape item. Oh, and Yoshi. Fun game, but not the best."
Flying was left out to make the game more like a classic platformer. It totally works. Every level is interesting and unique and very fun to play through. When I go back to the older games, I miss being able to wall-kick and break bricks from above...I miss the Mini Mushroom... - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Seems like a lot of good GBA and DS games are all very available when they first come out then just disappear off shelves forever.
- bryant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmm... I heard it was pretty damn quick to beat...
true of false? - ionbattle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2word.
- burnninator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It might be a little cheesy but "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan" is a REALLY good game, I might go as far as saying it is better than Mario.
- shit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>> "This game is really good and it reminds you of what got most of us into video games in the first place."
I'm still holding out for New Combat. - matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with you, especially about the powerups. The only powerup thats of any real use that ever shows up is the firepower. Where are all the cool suits?
- fohf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great game, not too difficult, but neither was the original super Mario brothers. even though it is really easy I find myself still playing it over and over again just like the original. trying to get all the coins, find all the secrets, beat the game quicker, or trying to beat the levels using only a certain power up. best of all I can turn it on for 5 minutes at a time then get back to my life.
Also, my wife loves to play it as well. - blobber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Double +digg for Castlevania. Definitely one of the greatest games made - but damned the last boss is difficult.
Getting Bat Company makes it a very good experience - being able to fly around is quite cool. Ironically though not a lot of copies were made/imported as they never expected it to be as popular as it was. So if you see it cheap get it. It's a great but normally expensive due to the lack of supply. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GO for Super Mario!!! YEAH!!!
~mario - embeem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can use the warpzone and warp to world 8 pretty easily and "beat" the game, but actually playing all the way through isn't quite as easy.
Admittedly the game is short with only 8 worlds (sorry, no alternate or plus worlds), and the mini games are mostly recycled from mario64 DS, but it's a brand new version of the classic mario game with new levels and powerups -- that's the important part.
The wired article is an overly hyped piece of ass kissing, but anyone who's addicted to the original platform mario games will love it, even if it isn't that much harder than the original super mario game. - Nukem945, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't forget the luigi code! When selecting a game file to play, hold L + R and then use the A button to select. Have fun playing as Luigi!
- MuzikFreec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I picked this game up when it launched and I've enjoyed playing through it. It's also one of the first games for DS that my wife was really interested it - mostly because of the old school appeal. She's not that fond of anything overly complicated, and to be honest this game is even pushing it once you add in the extra items and wall-kicks.
Still, I don't see how anyone can say this this is the best game ever for the DS. I think Wired went a little bit overboard on this article. It may be a great Mario game, but it barely utilizes the features that make the DS unique - the second screen goes virtually unused. So you switch screens if you go into a pipe. And is the progress indicator really necessary? From any Mario platformer I've ever played I could guess approximately where I was at in the level - the lengths just don't vary that much. I find I never pull out the stylus at all, I just tap the screen with my finger on the off chance I want to change worlds or use my reserve item. How can it be the best DS game ever if it barely scratches the surface of the intrinsic possibilities of the system?
And before I get completely dugg down, I still love the game - it is the best MARIO game on the DS. - dallen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love true swing golf. All it is golf though. Don't expect a bunch of extra features. Using the stylus for swings = awesome
- ericmoritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The game was awesome. Board 8 was freaking hard, damn those evil pumpkins and crows. Best moment in the game? Watching browser's skin melt off when he fell into the lava in the first castle. I had to beat it again just to show my wife.
- drsnacks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also, getting a mushroom in Super Mario 64 DS allowed you to grow super-large.
- ionbattle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ scruffmaster, wait for the lite, only a little while longer...
- shit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The turtle shell 1UP trick still works, too. 99 Lives, bitch!
- DragonQuester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i just bought this game today.
it is proabably the best $35 some dollars i have ever spent!
an amazing game. a must have for any gamer. -
