Kind of like how Nintendo didn't call the DS a Gameboy so the good name wouldn't be tarnished if the system failed, but in reverse.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30hahaha....N-gage 2. Why? thats all I have to say. Why.....
- onthepunt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23theres already been an n-gage 2..this will be #3
- caddyalan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Even compared to the Wonderswan consoles, the NGage software was pretty bad. And most of the games which kept the Wonderswan alive in Japan were ports of Final Fantasy remakes.
(To compare apples and oranges, just remember that there were extensive discussions about making a second Battlefield Earth movie...) - CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17What the hell? Why are they coming out with follow-up to the original which was absolutely terrible. No one bought that thing, it was a gigantic failure.
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@lizard: you're a negligent parent. Giving a child an nGage is tantamount to abuse.
- smoothlou, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Yeah, maybe they could work out a deal with Taco Bell and call it the Side-Talko Supreme!
This thing will be worthless, but dugg for hilarity's sake. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Nokia you have balls, expensive failing balls. I have a couple DS Lites... remember that thing? It's a freaking phenomenon. Someone forgot to tell you that you weren't invited to the game hardware industry.
- stugatz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14You guys give it no cred, I still use my Ngage QD as my everyday phone, I have for over 2 years now, it does more than any other phone could at the pricefor that time. Mostly it runs my NES emu flawlessly, I've played through countless games on the thing in the time that I had it. I also contributed to its downfall because they made the games too easy to pirate, which I did, so I had all the retail games, most of which sucked anyway, it was all about the 3rd party support which it didn't get. Anyway, it was a flop and people laughed at me when I got it, and still laugh at me now. If I wasnt already planning on the N95, I would consider it, I
- fantasmacanino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I can't wait to not buy one.
- bitt3n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9the only question in my mind is whether I should buy this or the Gizmondo 2.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Hell, I'm pre-not-ordering one as we speak.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9............ why?
.... seriously, why? Just why?
Dosen't Nokia get it? Their N-Gage was one of the worst selling handheld devices in history, even it's launch was a disaster. On top of that most of the games were ports of much much older games and some just plain total trash. If I remember correctly, the phone wasnt even that special in terms of gaming, most of the N-Gage games when dumped and stripped of their protection, would run on any other Nokia phone within the same model line/specs. So it was really just a phone with extra DRM added.
They couldent even design the stupid thing right, the original version made you put it to your ear in a very strange way and required you to actually remove the battery in order to change games.
Not to mention that it cost about as much as a PSP, if not more, don't remember.
Considering all this, im surprised Nokia even tried to keep the original alive as long as it did.
Now, despite all this, Nokia is trying AGAIN? They are even calling it the N-Gage 2? Naming it as the sucessor to one of the worst designed, selling, game library, priced, EVERYTHING handhelds made? If anything they should distance the device away from the original N-Gage as much as possible, just WHO do they have for marketing? And I thought Sony needed a better marketing/PR devision...
I mean, the original even had software support from SEGA, among many others. So far only two people have said they will support this thing. EA (their mobile devision only, which im not sure how much of an impact that would have) and some mobile game developer that almost nobody has ever heard of.
How did their managers ever think this? How could stockholders actually put money into this after the gigantic failure of the original? What next, they will openly declare the PSP for non-serious gamers and the DS for gradeschool children like how they attempted to insult the competition last time? - btgoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8slow as mad????
- wang1011, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Is it me or does wordpress seem to go down every time it is on digg
- jake8689, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7so crap has a sequel
- JD52, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7All I remember about the first one is that it looked like a taco....
I like tacos. Mmmmm - williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8onthepunt for the win!
Yeah that's how pathetic n-Gage was. Nobody notice there already had been two attempts.
As for why do it again? Nokia has so much market share in mobile handsets they actually could rival Nintendo in unit volume with a game-phone. - uberkling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2003/08/22
^ like last time? - techneo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10nokia did put a lot of effort and innovation into the ngage. It was a symbian 6.1 phone tailored for gaming. I still see titles being released for ngage . So why not ngage 2 .
- eliotmat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'm willing to give this thing a look.
Gaming on my current phone sucks.
Just because a company made a product that sucks doesn't mean they'll make the same mistake again. You can use apple as an example. Their products have sucked for years. They corrected themselves and now they are churning out great products. - Kraken2003, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The N-Gage QD kicked ass. All of you haters out there have never owned one. If you ask anyone who actually has one, chances are that they are very satisfied with it. Granted if you compare it to other game systems like GBA, DS, or even PSP, it falls flat. For a while I had the complete romset on a MMC and I can verify that every single game is downright aweful, and that is where Nokia went wrong. They should have marketed it as a reliable sturdy phone, that just happens to play nes/snes/genesis/gbc roms very well with the right software. Not to mention the cool sybian apps like a bartending program, bug repellant, office, etc. Compared to the motorola phones like the Razr that fall apart, the N-GAGE is a godsend.
While I would still bring my DS on a long trip, the N-Gage is great for that quick Mario fix or to kill a few minutes. My contract expired recently and I was looking into getting a Blackberry, now I just might wait for the N-Gage 2. - JrGhoull, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@kopar
because not even trying is worse than failing. look at the past gen war...ps2 did fantastic, xbox took a small share, and then nintendo took the reamining scraps...now look at it, its friggin vice versa! the xbox 360 is doing very well, and the Wii is selling like no system has ever sold before (literally) and sony, the company that was all powerful just a console gen ago, is now fighting deserpately jus to break even. the ngage sucked, but who knows, its improbable that nokia will release some unbelievable game system, but its far from impossible. - wowsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Nokia being about as smart as Sony these days...
- libertao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm not understanding this logic, since the N-Gage 1 sucked, the N-Gage 2/3 will AUTOMATICALLY suck? Or is this just another case of the ubiquitous digg-clairvoyance?
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@Parokki: That wasn't it at all. Nintendo originally intended to run the DS and Gameboy lines separately. The DS was to be their "third pillar". When the DS completely took over, they kind of ditched that whole idea.
- tooasianguys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Side-talkin!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!1!!!!! If they make it backwards compatible then WOW what a game library! **sarcasm**
Seriously, who's dumber, the guy who proposed N-Gage 2 or his boss for signing off on it? - LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Another piece of crap I won't buy! YAY!
- ravis31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From what i gathered this time i guess its not going to be one phone but a platform with a whole range of phones having the ability to play the games. They have a tieup with ATi for the mobile GPU chip for their phones.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You know if they want to throw away money they could just give it to me.
- PureGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@onthepunt
Wrong again stupid.
There was one NGage. There WAS the NGage QD, which was the same thing, except smaller and *****. That's like saying there have been two DSes, when in reality there is the DS Lite and the DS, which are the same thing, only one has updated features. So no, there hasn't really been an NGage 2.
On a sidenote, there are NGages on Ebay for like $20, so I'm gonna buy one for novelty, and side talking. - laterallateral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Out to lunch, will encounter ninjas on way back to office, don't wait up.
-Wordpress - nattybohman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I completely agree with you. I loved my N-Gage. How many of you have phones so well suited to run emulators? It has a d-pad on one side and fire buttons on the other which is fantastic for old school arcade and console games.I even loved one of their retail WWII strategy games called Pathway to Glory.
It may not be able to compete as a gaming device with your DS (or even that POS the PSP).
However, if you want a phone that's also good at playing games, you can't beat it. - philipz78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gameloft is a division of Ubisoft
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As much people bash the N-Gage, as a phone it wasent bad. Other than its large size, it had quite a nice feature set for its low price. It has all the abilities of a smart phone, for $100. Bluetooth, MP3 player (and ringtones), Radio, Speakerphone, Symbian OS, Web Browser, chat programs (that use the data connection instead of the MMS system to avoid the expensive per message charge) and hundreds of apps to pick from.
Sure you can find all this stuff in other phones now, but at the time phones with all these features cost a lot of money. I still use my N-Gage, and some of the games arnt bad. Even better I have a Nintendo Emulator on it so I can play all of the old Nintendo Games, and the button setup is perfect for that.
Maybe Nokia will learn from their mistakes, and come out with something that does better. Selling more than 5 of them cant be that hard. - umedone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ngage 2 will sport same touch screen that n800 and also a slide out keyboard + gps. No flashmem or internal hd tough.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So basically, it'll sorta be a design specification/mold that people that produce the system need to follow instead of Nokina making the one and only version of the system?
Hmm..... I can think of at least two previous systems that did that:
Apple Pippin
Philips CD-I - brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sorry, I haven't introduced you to the Nintendo fanboys yet.
- rlombardo, on 11/05/2008, -1/+3how about the people who buy it?
- SirBriggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they just want to release something that's not absolutely horrible and say: "We don't completely suck!"
And THIS is actually N-Gage 2, the QD was like the Gameboy Pocket, an upgrade. It doesn't have it's own set of games, like the Gameboy Color. - jrwolv, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3When it first came out I was like wow 3-d graphics but why a phone? Then it sold a total of 3 units
- enivid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I hope they bring back sidetalking!
http://sidetalking.com/ - andycr512, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hopefully the second one will be more N-Gage-ing than the first.
- dotlizard, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7four. i bought one too. gave it to my kid.
other kids on the school bus teased him because they said it wasn't a real phone. pfft. these kids today. - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2are you really so lazy that you can't be bothered to add the E on dupe? i mean, the originally word is already shortened down from duplicate.
- princessangry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I meant slow as hell. I'm a tad drunk rite now. he he :P
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So you need to have a phone contract to have one right?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly, I still use my N-Gage just because of the perfect emulator setup. The new 8525 looks like it might be good as well, but I have heard mixed things about WIndows Mobile 5.0 emulators, and the Symbain OS has plenty to pick from.
As a game system the N-Gage is a huge letdown, but as a phone it was a hell of a good one for the price.
I prefer the First One over the QD, since it has more features and I dont change games often. - HiWi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1N-Gage 2? Wow, I remember when the N-Gage was cool!
