- Morphine7399, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42I can't take someone's opinion of the current gaming market seriously when they have a Pokemon icon. I'm sorry
- warofwrath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Ah, but he has a blog and therefore more credibility than you. Go Logic! w00t!
- kkapoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10This isn't a matter of learning from Apple. It's simple economic sense. Why the hell would someone announce a pricecut 6 months before, it would deter anyone from purchasing a console today. No company is stupid enough to do that.
All this price cut stuff is simply speculation based on the fact that Microsoft would have lowered their cost of production by the time the PS3 is released and would be in a position to seriously threaten it's launch with a either a price cut, a couple of killer titles or both.
Even if they don't have a price cut MS would a have serious advantage by being on their second gen titles and have the capacity to deliver consoles. Sony has an uphill battle this holiday season. Regardless all PS3's will still sell out since there will be limited availability. - 81v3d07g0d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10What he was saying is they need to knock about $100 off the current price eg: 400 - 100 = 300 not 400 - 300 = 1 doesn't seem like rocket science to figure that out.
- apheleon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13even if they were going to drop the price, they wouldn't announce it in advance. hasn't anyone learned from apple?
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's also economic sense not to drop the price at all this holiday season. The PS3 is going to sell out of its initial run. The Wii probably will, too. There's no reason to drop the price of the 360 if it's not going to take sales away from those two platforms. Since people that are going to buy the first runs of those platforms are more than likely fans of those platforms, it doesn't matter what the 360 is priced at. It's not going to change those people's minds. In short, the only competition that the 360 has this holiday season is competition that price will have an impact on. So, if they're losing money on each unit anyway and there's no tangible advantage to dropping the price this year, why drop the price? There WILL be one next year, though. Count on it. And next year is when this whole thing starts to shake out.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Um... But I don't like PC games. I don't want to play a FPS, or a RTS. Maybe I want something that's only on consoles.. :/
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Your sources must be awful.
- ieatrocks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Did you just post a link to Wikipedia as a source of worldwide sales numbers???
The 360 is sitting at just above 2 million worldwide"
Did YOU just confuse the US with the entire world???
Sales figures for 360 in the US are just over 2 mil, worldwide is therefore, more.
Source (NPD Group): http://videogamecharts.com/page2.html
These numbers are accurate up to the end of March; April and May saw the 360 overtaking, then slightly falling back from PS2 sales worldwide. June indicators place it ahead this month. So, just over 2 million would be off, way way off. Good day sir. - gbm85, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Actually it says this fall. Last time I checked, Christmas was during the winter...
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I fail to see how this is news, the last known official word from Microsoft was a story about how they were not going to lower the price after they saw the PS3 price.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3After reading this, it doesn't seem very trustworthy, honestly...
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+61) the x360 IS selling well, it actually broke quite a few sales records, like the most @ launch in aus.
2) you're an idiot, ms has a BELOW INDUSTRY STANDARD for faulty consoles, it's something like 3%.. so, maybe if you use a source other than fanatical anti-ms sites you might not look like an idiot.
3) hang on, how does a $50 subscription fee 'essentially' raise the price by 200 dollars ? gosh you're an idiot.. also, the subscription fee for for xblive is 'meh' - the backend/services/performance/quality you get is well worth the price, and a few million subscribers will say so also.
2 million sold worldwide ? iirc it's somewhere around 5 million, though someone else feel free to correct me.
lol, you're whole 'things are changing fast' is based on 2 or 3 execs leaving and winfs' 'direction' being changed.
i'll say it again, you need to do more reading than simply fanatical stories on sites like digg, /. and others. - Omega697, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"its such an expansive toy that i cant afford"
Yeah, my house doesn't have enough room left for it either, after the original XBOX. - DPowers08, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3All the article has to say is that there won't be a price drop this holiday season. No need to turn it into a Microsoft infomercial detailing all of the features we're "missing out on."
- Opelious, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Now I don't feel so bad buying one now ...
Too bad it's a lemon. -_- - Bara, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So you're trusting a guy who apparently got the word from someone "in the know" about this? Well alright then... Someone I know who's "in the know" tells me that there WILL be a price drop! Let us all rejoice!
- deadlogic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4i'll be comparing it to the wii though. if it was to be a similar price, i'd consider buying it. i wont pay much more than $200 for a console because my budget wont allow for it. i'll consider buying a ps3 when it's in a similar range, maybe in 3 or 4 years...
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@Klisk - if that's the case and he only has $299 and no other income, a gaming console should be the LAST thing he should be buying, don't you think?
- darthrsg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why in the hell would any company release a date for a price drop? That is stupid.
- eseverson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
Xbox 360 rocks. I don't feel bad at all about the $400 I paid for it (...plus the $100 wireless networking...plus the $100 for two wireless controllers...plus the $40 for the HDTV component cables...plus the $180 I spent on three games when I bought it...).
...okay, I'm starting to feel bad about it, heh. - daeyeth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah cmon. This is just an advertisement and there's no real content.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You get what you pay for.
Unless it's made by Sony which makes it bad automatically
Unless it's made by Nintendo which makes it good automatically - silvalynin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@zanarkan
ok, so basically....you can't afford the 360 at $399.....you've had 7 months...but you can afford it at $299....meaning you've saved $42 per month on average. So, by the middle of September you'll be able to buy it....problem solved.
I mean...if you want the damn system, you save a few more dollars each month for it......no big deal - mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"It's also economic sense not to drop the price at all this holiday season. The PS3 is going to sell out of its initial run. The Wii probably will, too. There's no reason to drop the price of the 360 if it's not going to take sales away from those two platforms."
That's not neccisarily true. If someone is trying to buy a PS3 and can't (sold out), and sees the 360 they MAY decide to hold out for a PS3 of the 360 is at $300/400. They may however decide that the 360 will do at $200/300. Once they've invested several hundred dollars in the 360 and a few games, I'd bet the likelihood of them buying a PS3 anytime soon drops considerably. - angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maximize profit? What profit? You do realize that their gaming division is a big loser? If I can remember correctly they lost over $300 million in the last quarter. They're not making any money with the actual console.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+210-12 million by the end of this year? Can you give us the link to where you got this figure from? I'd like to read more.
- JangoFett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3A price cut? They should increase the price! The Xbox360 is a great media platform for next-generation HD content.
/This message brought to you by the Sony PR team. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They could drop regular one's price and make the Platinum (Built in HD-DVD player) $400. They already said, the built in ones are gonna start at $400. Well, they said it will be priced same as the "regular xbox360's release price"
- mmortal03, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"They aren't going to drop the price, they are going to stop loosing money on sales."
I was going to correct you, but I guess "lose" or "loose" both work in this case. ;) However, I don't follow what you were trying to say. - earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Finally we have busted all the CONFIRMED rumors on the price from a guy who heard from some guy who SWEARS he is in the know.
Busting rumors with rumors isnt very sound. Also let us all agree to never use words like "confirmed" when posting rumors - Clearz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why would you drop your price when the ONLY console in the same MARKET as yours will be prices 200 bucks more. Once and only when the PS3 drops to the same price as the Xbox will it itself drop in price. Simple economics.
- addisonj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2eh... well i don't know why anyone would ever say 6 months in advance "yeah! we are lowering our price in a little while!" i have no idea if there will be a price drop, but this is no proof either way
- windex99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I told all you Sony haters that it wasn't going to happen, and you all said, just wait and see....
- replica, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@MonkeyLives
Microsoft has sold 3.2 Million units at the end of March. Unit sales are expected to reach 10-12 Million by the end of the year. Dreamcast sold 10 Million units total in 2 years time. - televisible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They would cut the price or giving out game for Thanksgiving and Chrismas for sure. They deny it now just don't want people holding up on puchasing one now.
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2did people honestly expect a price drop this early on?
at the very earliest we would see a drop in price on the 360 come E3 2007. This will be soley dependant on sales of the Wii and PS3. A more likely scanrio is that of an XBOX360+HD-DVD drive combo package that will rival the cost of the PS3. - chrisc2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm not an Economics major, but I don't see why a company would cut the prices on their product when it's ALREADY cheaper than the leading competitor...
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about now? :)
- Durinthal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Do ANY of you actually have sources?
- mrkott3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2maybe profit maximisation. If there costs fall, and price is elastic they *could* increase profits by reducing price. (or it could be feasible to hold price steady and get more profit through cost minimisation. Oligopolies are strange markets in how they act.)
Then add the fact you may attract more people to buy if they are waiting for a competitor's product. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Crass22, I no longer value your opinion, you doubt the Wii.
- doubleYou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So now, it's Sony's fault that the 360 may not get a price drop. That's a good way to make this be about "bad" Sony and "good" Microsoft.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"even if they were going to drop the price, they wouldn't announce it in advance. hasn't anyone learned from apple?"
Thank you. From the first two threads, I swore I had somehow found my way into Crazyville. Just because someone from Microsoft announces this (ESPECIALLY a PR person) doesn't give it ANY sort of credence. Why the hell would they ever want to announce a future price drop? So they can alienate any present buyers? Yeah, that's a *real* good business strategy. - vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Damn MS, they can set the price they want and fans will buy, because there are no alternative to play XBOX 360 games.
Where are the cheap XBOX 360 clones? Why can't I build my own XBOX 360? I would put a 250GB HD in it. You call this a gaming machine? You can't even change the video card or upgrade the RAM!
And this white color and weird design... ewwww. - silvalynin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How is M$ raising the price of the 360 by "$200 or so" by charging $50 to play online?
Look....the 360 isn't going anywhere....they'll be just fine this year, and Microsoft has shipped almost FIVE million consoles ...and they're still on track to sell 10 million by the time the PS3 launches.
They DON'T need to drop the price of the system, because they would lose even more money on the 360......and plus, the PS3 already costs $100-200 more than the 360, so Microsoft already has the price advantage.
Also, how much management is being changed in the Xbox department at Microsoft?
Anyways.....they'll be here....Sony will be here....and you cant forget how many 360's are gonna be sold when Gears of War comes out later this year, and Halo 3 next year. I mean....Sony not having GTA as an exclusive anymore has definitely hurt them, but they do still have Metal Gear Solid.....regardless, all consoles will still ship, everyone will buy w/e they want, and everyone will be content with it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2LMAO at the idiot linking wikipedia as a source
- silvalynin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Klisk, if he isn't making any more money, and only has $299.....then he can go and buy a core system right now......see, that's the whole reason M$ made Core systems in the first place, just for people like Zanarkan.
- StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2just wait and see....
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If Sony was just a little more competent with their handling of PS3 maybe MS would have felt more pressure to cut prices.
