- ImTheDuke, on 05/21/2009, -0/+20I think 09 was the biggest leap forward for the franchise in a while. I love the "Be A Pro" mode. Now, if they only could make a good PC port again!
- awtripp, on 05/21/2009, -0/+12and while they're at it - bring back Mutant League Hockey!
- Spire3660, on 05/21/2009, -5/+16
Couldnt they jsut patch this in? Im am really tired of game companies getting to cash in every year with minor tweaks and a roster change to sports titles. - DuckSoup1, on 05/20/2009, -1/+9Hopefully they will put more into the Goalie mode.
Maybe a manual control where you guy doesn't automatically make the save. Sure it would be harder, but that's the fun.
Also no more cheap ass goals at the end that the AI is so fond of doing. - pktgumby, on 05/21/2009, -1/+8JESUS SAVES.....Yzerman gets the rebound and scores!
- Ftown13, on 05/21/2009, -0/+5I get extremely frustrated when I attempt a one timer and the pass is wide, but my player still attempts to swing 3 seconds after the puck flew by him. Also, when I get a penalty I feel like my guys can't pick up the puck until 5 seconds later
- FreddieD, on 05/21/2009, -0/+5NHL 94 was the best... when you were really good at the game and the guy you were playing against was not nearly as good, you would play Ottawa and he would play Pittsburgh, Boston or Chicago to even the odds. Ahh, the Jagr-Lemieux-Recchi line sure does bring back memories.
- marconius, on 05/21/2009, -1/+6At this point, I don't give a damn about anything other than them fixing the one-timer bug. Every time I play with a friend, we try to set up a one-timer pass in front of the net, and the player receiving the pass holds his stick horizontally and becomes completely unresponsive for 2-3 seconds. The puck floats right through his skates and it just gets ridiculously aggravating.
This bug is even in the silly 3 on 3 All-Star game that they released. It's a fun game, but suffers all the same problems as NHL 09. - AnthonyC, on 05/21/2009, -0/+5Dugg for Stevie Y
- greatcaffeine, on 05/21/2009, -2/+7All I want is a good PC version! At least port the 360/PS3 version of the game, nobody wants a PS2 port!
- navidb, on 05/21/2009, -0/+5capitalism bites eh
- superman46n2, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4Although the gameplay is pretty sweet minus the occasional computer brain fart where the player refuses to move or make a play for the puck, they need to spend modifying the menu screens with user feedback. Some of the menus are just down right frustrating to navigate through, it's also pretty buggy. Is there a way to modify and save your team strategies before advancing to gameplay?
- pktgumby, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4That was '95 I believe, great game.
- fascistpig, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4Wouldn't that make it the third?
- bigbadgoat, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4Well I was born in 85, and I've been playing the NHL series by EA since it was created. NHL 09 is easily the best of the series.
Those who have actually played it would easily agree.
As much as I love NHL 94 and still play it regularly it's way to arcadey and simple, NHL '09 is the closest thing to actually playing hockey and it's a boatload of fun to play. I love it. - IUAndar, on 05/21/2009, -1/+5I still dont think it compares to Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey for N64. Or Mutant League Hockey for that matter.
- trdrstv, on 05/21/2009, -1/+5Bring back NHL HITZ!!!!!
- akula89, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3wrong. NHL 09 is the pinnacle of sports gaming so far, and NHL 10 looks to best it
- TimmyGUNZ, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3The only way to make the game any more realistic is to include whining and dives by Cindy Crosby.
- marconius, on 05/21/2009, -1/+4No, a mis-timed shot would include animation and allow me to control the player. The player locks up and just skates in a neutral position on the ice for about 3 seconds, then you can start skating him around again. There's no shot animation...the puck heads towards him, he drops into the neutral stance and just lets it float on by. It's a consistent bug that we can reproduce in games and in the training mode, and again, also appears in the All-Star game that uses the same engine.
Unless he's in deep thought about missing his shot and undergoing a complex thought process about how he's failed his team and if he's going to make the cut next year, it's a bug. - glacierfanclub, on 05/21/2009, -1/+4Do you know which sells better NHL or NBA?
- glacierfanclub, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3Laying down isn't a effective way to play defense. You should be able to score fairly easily if they are just hitting the ground.
- pktgumby, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3Haven't played for a few months, so correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't equipment affect abilities in the Be A Pro Mode?
- danwallace, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3He done great save made!
Honestly, sometimes they just go full retard on you. - serif69, on 05/21/2009, -2/+4Skip the blogspam: http://insideblog.easports.com/archive/2009/05/13/ ...
Of biggest note to me is the complete overhaul of the fighting engine. It looks like it'll be more like Punch Out now, but with the option to turtle if you have a ***** fighter/prima donna (*cough* Crosby *cough*). Since it links into the apparently much-improved homer crowd engine, fighting (and especially winning) can actually boost your team's momentum on home ice. - danwallace, on 05/21/2009, -1/+3Hockey lends itself far better to the translation from physical sport to digital game. It's very fast-paced, physical and low-scoring meaning less frequent stops in play. I mean, really? NBA? Bounce bounce bounce score. Bounce bounce bounce score. Bounce bounce bounce miss bounce bounce score. Repeat.
- Coffeedemon, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2He is talking about basing the PC version on the 360/PS3 version instead of basing it on a PS2 version with fewer new features. You'd still get your PS2 version.
- akula89, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2NHL 10 is going to bring back the glory.
- shlebede, on 05/21/2009, -1/+3For those wondering if the PC version of NHL '10 will be another ***** copy/paste of NHL '03, don't worry. They are not producing the game on PC or PS2 this year.
I hate them. - toucha, on 05/21/2009, -1/+3ive played more than 400 games of NHL online...and i have a few things i wanna say that i hope they fix in '10
1st. thanks for fixing the hitting and penalizing stupid interference calls. The patch that was released made the game 100000x more realistic and who ever complains about excessive penalties online should just go play the 3 v 3 game they released
2nd. The patch that was released was the first (that i can remember) that changed the game play so significantly...i really hope they listen and release ass loads of patches in '10. IT would be amazing if they could make DLC for the playoffs for '10 and maybe even past playoffs ...change up the menu's and the overall atmosphere in the playoffs
3rd. At this point nhl 09 was the most satisfying sports game i've ever played...the game play was spot on (although a few glitches i will address in a bit. But its time to up the over all aesthetic of the game, the feeling the mood of the crowd, the noise level the commentary the menu's the over all presentation. I remember back in nhl 94 that they would have out of town scores and you would be able to see the highlights...I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT AGAIN, seeing that would bring such a level on immersion in the game and give you a feeling that its not only your game that matters but that there are other games being played (offline mode)
4th.I heard that the new UFC game has amazing commentary...why the hell cant EA get there commentary down for any game? THEY MAKE SPORTS GAMES and THQ blew them out of the water with commentary...EA should take a page out of commentary found in UFC and add it to ALL of their games. I play without the commentary on now because it just sucks soo much *****...like it was said before just spend another month recording and it will be done right
5th.I dare EA to beta this game for a month...becasue you can have all the testers spend all their time finding bugs but you get sooo much more out of a beta...if this is done they we wont have cheap goals, we wont have wrap arounds that go in or behind the net passes that usually result in 60% of the goals in the game. listen to the msg boards EA and release patches like crazy to fix cheap goals
6th.CHANGE the goalie physics...in all the nhl series the goalie is made out of a some heavy metal that isnt found on earth...it would be amazing to run over the goalie, the goalie should have his own physics instead of being cemented into the ground
this game makes me cum and i hpe that nhl '10 will make me cum even harder nexxt year
- pktgumby, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2I think he meant don't take the PS2 version and port that to the PC. He's not saying don't make a PS2 version.
- willdelaney, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2Why don't you.......get a ps3 and keep your ps2?
I know that you wont get pretty upscaling, but still. - foofightrs777, on 05/21/2009, -1/+3Ugh. L2R
- phlflyers19, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2I want broken sticks added to this game.
- foofightrs777, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2I think it was all of the 16-bit 90s versions (I speak for Genesis only). I too however remember and loved '95 the most. I still love the title screen with that sick save that Richter made on Bure's penalty shot.
- navidb, on 05/21/2009, -2/+4Make the crowd better, the atmosphere, the commentary, just spend an extra month or something of just voice work, make it more dynamic please
- kinseyincanada, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2NHL 09 is such a good game, it just goes to show you what EA can do whens theres actually competition in a sports franchise. The one thing that did bug me in NHL 09 was that the coaches were a generic model.
- ian47, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2I'd like to see a feature where equipment adds to your attributes, like what they do in Tiger Woods '09.
For example, certain types of gloves add to your stickhandling or shooting.
The best would be a jock could add +3 to your shot blocking. - LatvianHedgehog, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Isn't NHL 2k9 good ?
- smozoma, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Forgot to mention: NHL 94 on the Sega Genesis already had the unpredictable passing this article talks about, 15 years ago! It's hard to get much over a 50% success rate consistently (although on the SNES, it's more like 70%).
Oh, and some of those '94 leagues have automated statistics and standings, taken from emulator savestate files, tracking about 20-30 different stats, such as passing, checking, one-timers... http://www.blitz94.com/teamstats.asp?playoffs=fals ... - bigbadgoat, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Why would they beta a game when they have an entire wing of EA Canada in Burnaby, BC dedicated to game testing, who test the game during development and report bugs to the programmers as they find them? There's dozens of people who do nothing but play NHL 09 all day as their job, and report what's good and bad about the game.
Some bugs are missed, sure, some bugs are left in because they can't be reasonably fixed in the remaining development window.
There's cheap ways and glitches in every game ever made, from donkey kong to mario to metal gear solid. Sometimes its intentional, sometimes its because of the nature of the engine, sometimes it's overlooked. There's no reason to think a public beta would be any bigger of an improvement over their current testing scheme. Besides, do you know how much work has to go into even making a beta and getting it approved by MS and Sony, and how expensive it is? It's insane. - Griminald, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1NHL10 will have a "dynamic crowd" -- but we don't know what that means exactly yet. The last bit of footage we saw in a video blog with Dave Littman, the crowd textures weren't in yet. But he promised they will be much more reactive and "into" the game.
- Griminald, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Not only is passing and stickhandling going to change, but they're committed to fixing the glitch/easy goals online that plagued the EASHL. On EASPORTS.com you can check out blogs by Dave Littman as well that goes into some of the features they're expecting -- they had one guy specifically devoted to improving goalies.
Still, if the EASHL infrastructure isn't vastly improved, almost none of this matters cause they'll be in for a world of hurt. Littman promised we'll like the improvements to the online leagues, so I'm waiting for a preview devoted to that. - Griminald, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Equipment does affect your attributes in NHL09.
"Enchanted" equipment like you're suggesting though is ridiculous. It's not WoW; you're not going to get a loot drop for winning a fight against another player. ;) - akula89, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1yes, the second part if you trip someone its impossible to touch the puck for several seconds. so bloody frustrating!
- akula89, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1leaningfizz : yes, that bug is worse but is much more rare in comparison to the one-timer freeze up, so I hope that bug has highest priority..
- smozoma, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1NHL 09 was definitely the best update of the EA NHL series in ages, and really the only one I found a lot of fun since NHL 94.
If you miss the oldschool EA hockey games (especially NHL 94), you can play against people online and in leagues at http://forum.nhl94.com/ -- including hacked versions with new (or older!) rosters, teams, and graphics. - akula89, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1born in '84 smartass, 89 is my favorite hockey players #, Alex Mogilny
- Nealobus, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1Wait, I can't tell if you are being sarcastic. Wayne Gretzky 3D sucked but MLH was actually not bad. Hrm...
Well, no matter what, NHL 09 is the greatest hockey game out since the Genesis/SNES version of NHL 94.
And that is coming from a guy who thinks EA can't make a good football game if their life depended on it. - LatvianHedgehog, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1I hope 2KSports will bring another franchise to PC, since they have already brought baseball and basketball.
