I logged in just to digg you down. Take your negative bias elsewhere. The Dreamcast was a good system. And here is a shocker, so is the PS3. And, that is coming from someone who loves both his Wii and his 360! - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+63Poor marketing, and bad business decisions.
The Dreamcast was an amazing machine, it died too soon. - TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52since the server is down, here is a mirror of the installer

- cargreenwood, on 10/12/2007, -3/+51Remember the Dreamcast has an excellent Homebrew and Emulation Scene,
The Dreamcast File Archive has every emulation and homebrew release --> http://dreamcast.dcemu.co.uk/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi

A Dreamcast is for life :) - Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -1/+44@maxeh -- Well, there were plenty of reasons the Dreamcast died, but none of them had to do with a real deficiency in hardware power or quality games. PS2 Emotion Engine hype, the lack of a DVD drive, poor marketing, too many original creative Japanese-style games, the dispute with EA Sports, and rampant piracy were all factors. But none of that had anything to do with the actual gameplay. It's probably the best failed system in console history.
- MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41Yeah, lack of advertisement and the PS2.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42This is neat, but what I really want is a good Saturn Emulator. And when I say good I mean good like ePSXe or ZSNES, not that Giri giri or Satourne crap.
- achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -7/+45voldo is totally gay
- devilspy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+38Sweet, my Dreamcast stopped working last month, and news today is that Sega is discontinuing repair.
This is awesome, hopefully they make a Linux port so you could play this on the PS3. (and the limited 360s that were just hacked to run linux) Now time to test REZ. - Tallon29, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34Use a 360 controller with analog triggers?
- mnemonic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38@maxeh
because everyone waited for the PS2 and it's DVD drive - devilspy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32Ok this is SERIOUSLY GOOD. Running this on an amd 3200 1gb ATI x800
I used ATi Tray tools to override all settings to maximum 6x AA. Loaded Soul Calibur at 1600x1200 and took some screenshots
Check out the quality in the screenshots, you could output to an hdtv via dvi/vga.

- Twist05, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34I Digg you down, and I own a Dreamcast.
- Jotaro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Emulators have to perform many extra steps to mimic the original hardware, warranting the extra required resources.

What is it?
--------------
nullDC is a plugin based Dreamcast emulator for x86 based computers running Windows Operating Systems.
Recomended System Requirements:
---------------------------------------------------
- CPU: AMD Athlon XP/64/Turion at 2GHz or Intel Pentium 4 at 2.6GHz or equivalent.
- Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 4 TI or ATi Radeon 8500.
- RAM: 512MB
- Operating System: Windows 2000/XP/2003
- December Redistributable of DirectX 9c
The above requirements are considered as the absolute minimum in order to run the emulator as it was
intended to run. The emulator might be able to run on systems that do not meet these requirements
but with issues (like slow speed, GFX errors or Sound errors).
Notes:
- Some games have higher requirements than the rest and have speed issues even on systems that meet
the recomended requirements. In that case a faster CPU is necessary to reach full speed.
- Pentium 4 CPUs perform some tasks slower than other CPUs, thus the clock speed of 2.6GHz is needed.
On the other hand, Pentium M CPUs perform the same tasks much faster
(A Pentium M 750 at 1.86GHz should be enough to reach full speed).
Intel Celeron and AMD Duron (and probably Sempron) CPUs are slow and it's expected to perform worse than the rest
- Nvidia Geforce 4 MX video cards are worse than the TI series and they do not meet the minimum requirements.
- DirectX 9c has many redistributables. It's common to have an older version installed that misses certain necessary
files.
Be sure to download and install the December redistributable or the default graphics plugin will fail to Load.
- nullDC will run on Windows Vista. However, hardware requirements will be a little higher than the ones mentioned
above and there will probably be sound related issues (as with many other applications running on Vista). - seiha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28nm http://images.snesorama.us/dc_flash.zip http://images.snesorama.us/dc_bios.zip
- cheald, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Emulators run on genericized hardware. Console hardware is static and known to the developer, and the developer doesn't have to go through layers of drivers and subsystems to get to the hardware, whereas an emulator does.
- JoshuaH, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Shenmue here I come.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenmue - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Why would you be amazed by that? It requires more processing power to emulate hardware that doesn't exist. The whole point of a hardware emulator is that it "lies" to the software about what components the computer is made up of, and then is supposed to take instructions from the software that require this non-existent hardware and figure out how to deal with it so that the end result is a correct execution of these instructions.
EDIT: Heh, I guess I was one of several people who felt compelled to educate him at the same exact time. - ViceVirtue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Whatever happened to Chanka and Chankast... That emulator showed so much potential from the beginning and then was suddenly un-heard of.
Hope this one fairs better. - ConceptJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22I'm amazed you can make that statement and know what "emulation" means. I'm guessing you don't.
- Twist05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Yea don't forget to rename "dc_bios" to "dc_boot".
- Twist05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Right, I'm using this opportunity to promote Shenmue. Everybody play it, and DEMAND a sequel!!!
- staplez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Really? You're amazed?
OK imagine it this way, Dreamcast speaks dream language, PC speaks x86. The translator speaks both.
Now when game speaks to Dreamcast, it speaks in dream.
when game speaks to PC it speaks in dream which the translator captures translates and resends it into x86.
Now writing the process took 2 times as many words, can you imagine how much MORE complicated actually translating it is. - TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21also, they screwed up the japanese launch. and sony's smear campain.
- chazuk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Got a dual core processor? Then try SSF! Runs lovely on my Centrino Duo 1.6 and even beter on my C2D E4300.
http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~phantasy/ssf/index.html - clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I think it would be more accurate to say you stand in awe and wonder of things you do not understand.
- mtonak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Does it support a mic? I'd love to dig out my copy of Seaman again.
- Tacobake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12props to the DC
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13My DC gets mostly used as a NES, it's true.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Reading the readme made me remember of the days of Bleem! and the high-required system it needed.. the good ole days.
- Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11don't shout into your microphone
- smb3d, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13They've made pc controllers with triggers since about 1997
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14The best thing about the Dreamcast was that the system, a joystick, a few games cost me $35.. but the real prize was bootloading a CD-r of 700 NES roms. Good times, good times.
Anyway, Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2, Sonic, and some other DC titles were really kick ass. The Dreamcast never got a fair shake in the American market, and still has games released for it to this day, albeit sporadically.
It was simply a system ahead of its time. - tobikow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10dreamcast was ahead of its time...
- seiha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11help, need dc_bios.zip :(
- lolgamoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9CHU CHU ROCKET HERE I COME!
i never had a dc...oh dear god i missed out on so much... im gonna find space channel 5, soul caliber, jet set radio, shenmue, and star gladiator 2.... - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Is that like finding Jesus?
- Dogtanian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I wonder if you can help me, I'm looking for some sailors...
- Twist05, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13REALLY!? OMG!!!
Lol, I knew that, I meant Shenmue III! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10isn't there a reason the dreamcast is great?
yes. yes there is. - Riffz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Official announcement: http://forums.ngemu.com/nulldc-forum/87533-nulldc-v1-0-0-public-beta-1-a.html

Author's profile: http://forums.ngemu.com/member.php?u=53152 - mercano, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11If it requires DirectX, then unfortunately, its probably not going to be ported to other OSs anytime soon. Emulators being as demanding as they are, it wouldn't surprise me that there are a few x86-reliant pieces of code in there too, so those of you looking for a LinuxPPCCell port for PS3 may be waiting a while.
- mattcoady, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8http://www.torrentz.com/search?q=dreamcast&x=0&y=0
Full rom sets if you can't get a hold of the original discs. - lesterchakyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Does it work on Linux? (Wine/Crossover/Cedega)??
- lolgamoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Has anyone used this emulator with a 360 usb controller? I have one laying around at home, that would kick ass if i could use it.
- SyberMile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6to bad this could not be ported over to xbox
