- ThePeteStanis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30Dude, I am having the same problems. With so much anticipation and advertising, you would think they would have prepared.
Remember, remember, the twenty-second of November. - superpatty, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18I'm trying to download v for vendetta right now
I've had the download freeze by itself four times now, all you have to do to get the download again without paying is:
go to Xbox Live Marketplace
then Account Management
then Download History
select the movie (V for Vendetta)
then select download again
I have had no problems restarting the download, after a few seconds my 360 recognizes how much has already been downloaded and the download completion jumps to that point (i.e.- 23% downloaded) - kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10carapi...
dude...
they might be only 2 people, ON DIGG.COM not everyone is on digg so they cant tell us of this issue they have. - mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@piper999:
You use "touche" like most people use "literally". And by that, I mean incorrectly and pointlessly. - erickVee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I am also having a similar problem. I rented a movie and got a download error. I tried to download it again and i got the same error. So now i have no movie and I'm out some points.
- sauron256, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@carapi
If, as you say, only two people in the world were having problems, why do you think he had to wait so long on hold to the customer support desk? - mishagray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually, I believe you CAN restart rental downloads, but only if they originally started. I have had people succesfully "restart" their halted movie rental downloads.
In my case, the rental download never started. I never had a download listed in my "active download list". I IMMEDIATELY got a point deduction, followed by an error to call customer service. Going back to Download History just results in Xbox Live trying to deduct another 480 points from my account.
Now, the failure I had MIGHT have been due to it timing out on some critical transaction, but if you ask me that shows there are some real kinks in the system.
But I would have completely forgiven these guys, if they had JUST GIVEN ME A REFUND, instead of making me wait days to get it points back. - Whackly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Really? And where do you rent your HD movies from?
- scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree the english seems kind of broken but in his defense he was probably in a very frustrated state at the time
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I had no problem when it launched. Quite enjoyed my HD rental of v.

Microsoft Responds to Slow Movie Download Issue
[QUOTE]
"Due to the overwhelming popularity of the new full-length content following the launch on Xbox Live Marketplace we are aware some gamers are experiencing temporary difficulties accessing content, due to the volume of demand. Download times will vary depending on broadband speed and size of content, and we expect the current issues some gamers are experience will be resolved soon." - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You're suprised ? There have been issues with a complete of 'huge' things on Live (Like E3) which lasted 1-2 days max. It's a huge service with millions of members and pushes how many terabytes of data ?
If the problem is still there in a few days, start complaining. - burstaneurysm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Grey text doesn't work well on a white background...
- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@mishagray
I think you can usually skip automated call systems by not pressing any buttons right from the beginning of the call.
The computer will presume you have an old, non touch-tone, phone and put you straight through to a person. - Reidtheweed01, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Did you really think you were going to be the only person downloading a 6gb movie the day it was released to millions.
- drakino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No kidding. XBox 360 hard drive is $100 + $58 to download the first 29 episodes. Boxed set of Star Trek first 29 episodes costs $70 on Amazon. Telling people to buy new hard drives to store their shows separately has to be one of the dumbest things out of his mouth to date.
- duffman03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@vhold
You can re-download them on a friends box using a Memory unit with your live account. - DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those who have a 360, I have a question. The hard drive is optional right? So I'm assuming the operating system can run fine without a hard drive. So why is 7 GB taken up from the get go with the hard drive? That seems like an awful lot of space, and I'm curious to know the answer.
- legendary, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think the hd content store is great. None of the video stores are renting hd DVD by me so this works out great. I just need a bigger hard drive
- slickrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yes
- brewyet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4same problem here I'm at 45% in 48 hours and had to restart the damn thing 5 times
- dbldn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was in the same boat yesterday. My download started @ 1:20pm EST. By 5:20pm, I had downloaded 10% of V for Vendetta. By 12 midnight I had downloaded 16%. I cancelled the download then and decided to call support the next morning. I was on the phone with support for 55 minutes... the end result was that they refunded my 480 points. Wait a couple weeks and this should all be smoothed out.
- Whackly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"...and have clocked too much time on “Outpost Kaloki” that I wish to admit."
Every sentence makes the author seem smarter and more informed... - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3the xbox360 HD-DVD should be a writable drive.
The movies should be able to be burnt onto the HD-DVD with DRM that states that everytime the movie is played (only on the 360), it logs into the xbox live account to verify who is playing it.
That would solve the space issues. - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ugh, so against all better judgment, I thought I'd give one of these downloads a shot just now..
It's been sitting at 0% complete for over 25 minutes. How much electricity is this beast going to consume trying to download one stinking movie?
Microsoft needs to just take the service down, this is stupid and creating a ton of ill will. Pure disappointment. - drakino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't talk about DRM being bad, I got modded down in the last discussion since "It would be impossible otherwise."
The concept of the rentals sounds cool. But now that I know any connection interruption could cause me to have to call MS to get a refund, and well, I'll just stick with other rental services. That, and not being able to hold 2 HD movies sucks. What happens if I want to rent one and then a second to start downloading right away? 13 gigs usable is simply not enough space. - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I havn't attempted to rent anything on it yet, but I'm pretty unimpressed with the offerings so far.
Weak selection of movies, only competitive price are the high def movie rentals.
The shows are -way- expensive. If the shows were 50 cents a piece, I think I'd be willing to go for it. $1 for 45 mintue long shows, I could justify. But $2.25 a show? 14 episode season costs $31.50, just to -rent- ? I really wish there were a way to rent a whole season for awhile for some discounted rate. I think that would hook me.
I hope the market doesn't buy into these stupidly expensive prices, otherwise we're all screwed. - walter909, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think they fixed it I downloaded an episode of south park within 10 minutes
- mishagray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those that still care:
The download finally finished:
http://situationterminal.com/2006/11/25/its-done/ - Morphine7399, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"The HD rental is just a way to compete against / take away buzz from the blue ray PS3"
Actually I am pretty sure that is their HD-DVD drive ad-don, The movie rental and TV show download service is something that PS3 doesn't/can't currently compete with.
I had this same problem yesterday expect with a TV show, but it was no big deal as I could just download it again. The problem however seems to be fixed today and I assume it is just because of the unexpected popularity of the service on it's launch day. If you call 1-800-4MY-XBOX they will refund your points for the rentals. - mishagray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1UPDATE: I got my refund!
More here:http://situationterminal.com/2006/11/24/is-my-nightmare-over/ - Whackly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Minimum wage my ass. I've worked in call centers. Companies that have their own call centers don't pay minimum wage. Contracted call centers like TPUSA... maybe. Telemarketing agencies... maybe. Inbound call centers where you get yelled at by uptight, patience free, "want everything sewn up in a tight little package right now", overserviced, American idiots on every call..... piss on minimum wage.
- mishagray, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4There's a new thread on xbox.com about this issue:
http://forums.xbox.com/8356419/ShowPost.aspx - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Aside from slow download times due to the overwhelming number of people trying to download at the same time i've had no issue.
I managed to snag V for Vendetta and a episode of Jericho. The service works now they just need to get on the speed issue. Im sure the servers being overloaded is what caused your problem and im also sure once it all went live everyone at MS went on vacation.
Everything should be resolved shortly and I highly doubt you will die from waiting a few days for your 480 points. Just relax. - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you call MS they will refund you money just did it was only a 5min call.
- mishagray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Of course, there seem to be MULTIPLE problems.
My problem is with the RENTALS. The TV show purchases can be "re-downloaded" as much as you want, so if you have issues, you can retry as much as you want.
But the rentals work different.
It took my money. It refused to even START downloading, and then when I contacted customer support (as instructed) and spent 1.5 on the phone, I am told that I have to wait until next week to get my refund?
Bad. Bad. experience. - AngryRepublican, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=70343
Apparently a wide-spread problem. Congrats on the refund! - Brookrtm07, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Damn bad luck, dude. I feel for you.
I'll not be trying this out until a few things occur:
1) A larger hard drive! 20 Gb is small...13 Gb is actually what everyone has...at least before downloading demo's, videos, etc. Give us a respectable amount of HDD space and quit acting like 20 gigs is enough. It's just insulting. (I listened to Major Nelson a week ago saying he was going to download all the Star Trek episodes on one HDD and then just remove it and keep it as his Star Trek HDD...Major Nelson, for all his charisma, can eat my shorts for that out of touch comment.)
2) Ohh, hell, why should I list any more?! I'll keep reading others' reviews of their experience, but until I can save TV episodes to disk somehow, I'll just wait for the DVD box set of my favorite TV. I'll not just delete so I can "re-download it later"...what a waste.
OK, digg me down. I was impressed with the line-up...but I feel like it's just not a timely introduction of a new product: first, the bigger HDD, then "Hey folks, now we have these incredibly large down-loadable movies for ya here!" would have been a better approach. - gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it was Cinema Now, a movie download service, that tried HD downloads a little while ago and ran into a similar problem. I assumed Microsoft found a solution, who knows more about what is possible on the internet than they do? I rather assumed they structured this like torrents (file sharing). Until Microsoft puts out a larger hard drive and gets more server capacity this thing just isn’t going to work very well.
They of all people should have known better. - mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Am I that hard to understand me?"
Yes, yes you are. - cwalk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is another great example of DRM working against the consumer.
- mishagray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No - the TV show prices are for PURCHASES. You are buying a "lifetime" license to play it back.
The MOVIES are RENTALS. These have a 2 week/24 hour limit. You can watch them up to 2 weeks after you download it, and watch it for 24 hours after you hit "play".
TV shows you can watch forever. - pureliquidhw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so would a bigger HDD
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah, my bad. That.. makes the value I suppose more equitable to buying shows on DVD, although you can't lend it to your friends, play it on other devices, etc, so, really it should be much cheaper.
- Thorlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^^^
not 'mod' as in to play downloaded games, but 'mod' as in to take out the 20gb SATA Laptop harddrive out of the 360 HDD shell and put in a 100gb SATA 7200rpm Laptop harddrive in.
last i checked it worked.
just the harddrives cost a bundle. - dougm68, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah...
I just play games on my 360.
Its uh gaming console.
duh. - mhuggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOLLERSKATES!!
- broly1718, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Major Nelson has a new post about it. http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2006/11/23/video-marketplace-status.aspx
"I just hung up on a conference call on this issue, and I wanted to post an update. As you know, we have been experiencing technical difficulties associated with the extremely high number of downloads from the Video Marketplace service over the past 24 hours. We understand these technical issues have resulted in a very unpleasant experience for our members, including extremely slow downloads or not receiving the content they purchased. We’ve made progress over the past 24–hours, and the team is dedicated to fixing the issues and continues to work as fast as they can around the clock to get the service running as seamlessly as you have come to expect. We strongly encourage all folks who have experienced an error message or did not receive a download they purchased to call customer support at 1-800-4MYXBOX. I also want to mention that if you see the ‘Points have been deducted from your account…’ message when you are trying to download free content, we are NOT deducting points. Thanks for your patience, and please know that the team is prepared to make things right for those affected, including refunding Microsoft Points where appropriate and as quickly as possible.
If you are having problems or have questions, you may want to head over to the Video Markeplace forum on Xbox.com. Members of the Video Marketplace team are over there answering questions and providing status updates on issues." - drakino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yep, as other said it's for "caching" game data, to you know, make it faster. Kinda like the PS3 does when it "installs" a game, but somehow changing the wording causes 360 fanboys to bash the PS3 for doing the exact same thing and calling it stupid to install data to a hard disk.
The original Xbox did the same thing. And it's one of many reasons the "Core" 360 should not even exist. - joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"umm joeydoo.. why would the computer assume you don't have a touch tone phone when it can hear the touch tones?"
Because...... you aren't making the tones.... I thought I said that.
You dial......
It asks you to press 1 for whatever.....
You press nothing.......
You get put through to a human being.
It doesn't know what you used to actually dial the number with. It can't hear your phone in until you have finished the dialling and have actually been connected. It can't see into the past.
Mobile phones don't work quiet the same way as a non-powered, corded phone, but the mobile phone network still emulates the sounds of "touch-tone" if you press a number. It plays them to the other end.
Don't press numbers.... no "max" -
