- NoGame22, on 10/24/2007, -2/+55I've had the same problem. I had a credit card set to auto renew, but it expired. So I went to remove the card and put a new one on my account, but to no avail. The customer service rep gave me the same song and dance about not being able to remove the card, and then said I could put a new card on with higher priority.
So what happens when this card expires, will I have three cards on my account, and only one active? Ridiculous. They need to have more payment options like a real online store, so that you can edit your info or totally remove yourself from the system.
Don't get me wrong I love playing on live and don't mind spending the money to do so, but this is one of many things that need to be fixed for the whole process to work properly. - fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35Ehh wtf stanford? Most likely that is not your card and to screw with someones life savings is just being a bitch. I wish there was someway to report that.
- fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Nevermind I found the abuse e-mail.
- stenk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20stanford you are a tool!
- sinfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17To view and edit your payment method on the website:
1) Log in at http://live.xbox.com
2) Click on "Profile" under the "My Xbox" tab
3) Click on "Billing and Contact Information" on the right
After getting here, you can add a new card, and then mark the old one as removed. However, it only put (removed) next to it, so that it doesn't show up on the Xbox, but still shows up on that page. Also, it didn't seem to let me mark it removed unless I added another payment method. Is it legal to handle billing like this? - Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Ummm... I've had two different cards on my account and I just deleted one a couple weeks ago.
Login to xbox.com and go to manage profile, and then modify billing and contact info. Don't count on MS tech support to either be honest with you, or know what they are talking about. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Stanford's card is a Simon Gift Visa that has 83 cents left on it. It does have 4 declined attempts at charge on it today, though.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10This is why I've used a store-bought card from day one.
- Phearce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10stanford's number appears to be valid, but not tied to a bank. I.E., it's a random 16 digit number that follows the Visa format.
Confirms that he's a tool.

Oh wow, why didn't I think of that? Oh yea, I did and it didnt work, nor apparently did it work then the phone support did it for me and told me I wouldn't be charged again. - doodirock2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Its more of a warning I would say. Heck, look at all the people with similar stories. Im sure that not everyone takes the time to read 16 pages of TOS.
- stenk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is what they sent me when I asked them the same thing!
Hello,
Thank you for writing Xbox Customer Support!
Thank you for your inquiry. We understand that you have inquiry on how to delete your credit card from your gamertag or Xbox Live account. Unfortunately Sten, there's no way to delete the credit card you that you attached to your account, if you don't want to be billed in your credit card you can purchase pre-paid subscription.
For further assistance, please don't hesitate to write back or call Xbox Phone Support - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I no longer use my credit card for these type of charges. One time "try before you buy" sites (match.com, etc) or anything with a recurring charge. The solution is a disposable number- either through your current credit card provider or a card like "vanilla visa", where you can buy it at the drugstore. A $100 card has a $6 convenience fee, a price I gladly pay knowing *I* control who gets paid and how.
- rentz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5something similar happened to me, i initially gave my CC to setup xbox live, but always used the cards you buy at the store to pay for it.....after a while i stopped using live and cancelled my service through the xbox live site.... a few months later i saw a charge on my CC that was for xbox live, i called tech support and they were helpful and refunded my money and fully cancelled my account.
- TheFlood16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6ya, this sucks. you have to call and cancel or else they continually renew you r account on that card.
you should just be able to cancel within the xbox itself and you shouldn't have to call. plus that is dumb about the credit card. - fox, on 04/11/2009, -0/+5I had something like this happen: I sold my 360 and I thought I had removed all of my account info (gamertag, etc...). I didn't realize that the credit card information stays on the system. A couple months later, I get charged 100 bucks for gamer points. Did a chargeback and got the money back, but had to cancel the card and get a new one.
- Nozzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I believe Xbox Live has become the new AOL.
- oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I just went to my account and cant find any way to delete a CC number. The only option is to add another one or "transfer" another card which simply adds yet another CC to the file.
- jaimevejar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i still get an email from Microsoft saying they tried to charge my card but couldn't- even though the card has been inactive for 2 years! The live thing is not the only thing that bothers me- MSN Music had a promotion that if you bought 1 sing you get 5 free. that four year old card is STILL linked to my account and MSN sends me warnings that they tried to charge my card! WTF!
- StudsTurkel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ rentz
I had the same thing happen to me. Twice on the same account. I canceled, saw the charge, called in and had them remove the charge and re-cancel the account. 1 year later the charge showed up again and I called in and they removed it again. I already have my calendar marked to watch for it again. This is very scary, especially since I do not remember giving them permission to auto-renew. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Does it make the scary BANG noise when it goes back in to your account? I may pay 50 bucks just to avoid being startled like that.
- Willeth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This only applies to the original Xbox. If you do this on the 360, you don't need to enter a CC into the system.
- dynendal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4When I went to unsubscribe to Phantasy Star Universe, I cancelled, and a charge showed up 5 days later. Apparently they were "late" for the last charge, and still had my credit card to charge. I've only used my card for PSU and haven't even signed up for a free xbox live gold account.
- Nadinengland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6My friend has free Xbox live, simple enough.
His card was being abused for some reason, so he went to the bank and cancelled the credit card.
Now they just send him email's saying please update your information your card is out of date. heypresto! - doodirock2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There is no edit or remove function that i see. Like StudsTurkel said, even the rep told me it wasnt possible.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9And once again people prove they are 12 years old with hte $ thing.
Pathetic. - jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@coffinf33der What will probably happen is you will still get charged by Microshaft, but on top of it get charged a over the limit fee by your card provider. Your best move is to cancel the card entirely.
- kickuindajunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Last night I went to purchase marketplace points for the first time and noticed that my credit card was saved and all I had to do was click purchase and my transaction was complete. It was very scary how easy it was. But here is a question for everyone. So if your credit card is tied to a gamertag and you recover your tag to another xbox. Can that account now be used to purchase stuff on the newly recovered xbox? Because if it can, then people can just start stealing peoples gamertags recovering and downloading as much content as possible.
- battleroyalex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I found this annoying too, anyone can purcharse points to my account now and it doesn't ask for a cc number or anything it just comes right off my account. So If i had a little kid or something that keep deciding to press A on microsoft purchase points it would drain from my account that easily..
- 1KrazyKorean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well good thing my credit card was canceled and I was sent another one with a different number
- johnnycourage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it happened to me too.....it was a total pain in the ass to deal with MS customer service but it eventually got resolved. Good to know about the .net thing though, thnx scotty....
- sesmm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OMG Finally someone has this problem. i got charged 5 times in the same month for gold service by a stupid employee so my mom had to cancel her cc number. now i only use prepaid cards.
- ohthedaysofyore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Microsoft trying to suck as much money out of its customers as possible? That's a surprise...
- coffinf33der, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i dont even have $50 available on my credit card and my gold membership expires on march 8th, will auto renew still work? i hardly play on live and i dont have the money right now to renew.
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well in all fairness, there isn't really a way for them to prove you wanted to cancel your own card and not someone else's. If you could just cancel service to random people's phones that would be even worse...
A good place to keep passwords is an encrypted file on a flash drive. It probably won't break and you won't lose it. You can also access it on any computer that way. - doodirock2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Its really lame that they can just take your CC number and automatically tie it to the rest of your account. I just tried to move my CC off and get a new one, but there is no way to take off a linked CC card. Instead they just link both! In fact, they wouldn't even let me change my email address which is currently tied to a dead address account. This means I don't even get notified when they are going to charge me, they just do.
- hadak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2so, it would make sense to buy a prepaid credit card and use it on xbl?
- jrieth50, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Again, people prove that both commenters and those that reply are 12 years old by developing a spastic colon every time someone uses M$ instead of MS. Childish? Yes. But have a bit of humor or just ignore it, his post was obviously not intended to start a flame war, how bout yours?
- kylesellers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, i posted this 104 days ago, and everyone said I was full of crap (and called me a bad father--even though I have no children...). http://digg.com/gaming_news/Microsoft_refuses_to_let_users_remove_credit_card_info_from_Xbox_Live
The point is that when you put a credit card through xbox live, you CANNOT remove it. It might not be the same if you use other Microsoft services--I don't know. I only use xbox live, and I have 2 expired credit cards on file, and a credit card on a friend's account since I paid for a year of his xbox live through my credit card. I was pissed because I cannot get my card off his account.
I also have a nephew who plays on my account occasionally, and I don't want him being able to buy any damn arcade game he wants, and I don't want to have to enter a password with my controller. Amazon.com lets me delete credit cards, and so does just about everyone else, why can't MS? - dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you have ever input your CC# into your xbox, YES it will be charged. Get it out or make sure your account is set to NOT autorenew.
- sorahn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3you had to use a credit card to use the 12 month pre-paid card. That's where they got it.
- jrieth50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I ran into a similar problem when I allowed a friend to give me cash to pay his Live fee w/ my credit card (on original Xbox.) They would not let me stop auto-renew or take my card off of HIS account, despite the fact that we obviously had different names/addresses/etc. He finally had to get a debit card from his bank just to keep them from auto-renewing his account with my card. Very odd practice.
- Barnolde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you 'cancel' XBL and revert your Gold account to Silver, it's impossible AFAIK to get Gold again, unless you make an entirely new gamertag, which is stupid, since it's basically the flipping of a switch. MS really doesn't want you to cancel XBL.
- lakai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got Xbox live for the original xbox when it first came out. I had to use my cc to purchase the kit which included a 1 yr subscription. It auto updated with my cc every year I was using my xbox live AND every year even now when I dont even use my xbox, or used xbox live for many years. How the hell do you cancel it??
- Matrix_Prime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what I find odd is that they can continue to charge a card even AFTER the information they have is expired. Last August I got an email stating that my subscription would be renewing, followed by another saying that it couldn't be renewed due to the fact that the card information has expired. The re-new date comes and goes, and they ended up charging the card anyways, and got away with it. Not sure how that works.
- NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Go down to your local police station, swear out a complaint, and send a copy of the police report to MSFT's general counsel. You'd be surprised how quickly the "impossible" can be made to happen when you ask in the right way.
-jcr - doublej42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I worked for XBOX and this is true. I worked for Microsoft for about 4 years and one of my jobs was to help out with the CS guys (and girls) in XBOX. It's a crappy billing system they use and it does store credit cards. Even a level 3 tech can't remove a card. even if it's a stolen card.
- charliekwalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This happened to me too... I have a new card number now and don't plan on letting Live get a hold if it for that same reason... It's prepaid cards from Best Buy or Wal Mart now on for me when it comes to my XBL account. What a pain.
- flair1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if worse comes to worse call your bank and tell them the card was stolen and they will issue you a new card #
problem solved - jhildebrand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just got my old cc# removed from my account after 49 minutes on hold with customer service....kind of. They said it will take an additional 5-10 days to complete my request. And the base level customer service rep told me it wasn't possible to remove cc#'s but the manager stated that only managers know that it can be done.
