- digg it
- shinobi357, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Well written and informative. Nice article.
- z00k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.arc-hq.net
Attack Retrieve Capture (ARC) is a free multiplayer, 2D computer game originally created by John Vechey (jv) and Brian Fiete (bf) as a college project was later published by Hoopy Entertainment in 1997. The game is primarily capture the flag (CTF), but other game modes exist. In the 2-team CTF mode, each team is trying to capture the other's flag(s). Players pilot small ships equipped with 4 types of weapons: lasers, missiles, bouncy lasers, and grenades. - radu79, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2They lack a LOT of free MMOs. I guess they just focused on the very well known ones, which is kind of pointless (most of the people know about them anyway).
- YHCIR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://openarena.ws - Open source Quake3 (was on digg a few weeks ago)
http://taspring.clan-sy.com - Spring RTS - prelude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They all fit into categories of games I've played before. I want something with persistent world gameplay not graphics, risk for reward and instant action PvP combat without levels, training, etc. Is there one or should I make it?
- dadioflex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What you want is a persistant Counter Strike.
- z00k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.arc-hq.net
- Innagadadavida, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Flyff is also a great MMORPG.
http://flyff.gpotato.com/- wheaty, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6The best free mmorpg ever is http://www.kingdomofloathing.com
It's got great graphics, intense gameplay and a well thought out storyline. - dragoneye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3My personal favorite is Space Cowboy. Which also happens to be made by the people who made Flyff
http://sco.gpotato.com - Archeologist, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3Waaait for it....
http://www.runescape.com
...please don't kill me - canadianrockstr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3noooooo I hate that game, ever since that game came out my brother has not stopped!
Its so sad! - Archeologist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys know I was joking right? ...right?
- wheaty, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6The best free mmorpg ever is http://www.kingdomofloathing.com
- netrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Legends was also missed, but I'm guessing you could go on and on with these free MMORPG's that get money through allowing you to purchase items or pay a monthly fee for 2x experience.
- Groovemaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The Battle for Wesnoth is one of the best fantasy turn-based strategy games out there. It has a constantly busy multiplayer lobby and a campaign browser.
And it's free.
http://www.wesnoth.org/- jacobmp92, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I second Wesnoth. Especially since it is so easy to get on Ubuntu:
$ sudo apt-get install wesnoth*
The * makes sure all campaigns and sound files also get installed. - netrix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Agreed, Wesnoth is very easy to install in Ubuntu.
- jacobmp92, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I second Wesnoth. Especially since it is so easy to get on Ubuntu:
- steven401, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Warsor is also a good FPS game for free based on the Quake 3 engine.
http://www.warsow.net/ - shinkaide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4People are also starting to realize that offering things for "free" can also be profitable, whether it be through micropayments (for certain added features or optional items), ads, or other things. Either way, it's good for the players and companies as well.
Just because something is free doesn't mean the quality and the experience has to suffer. On the other hand, with the right approach and some creativity, a free game can really kick ass. - KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow how old is this info?T:V has been for years now.
Starsiege: Tribes -- One of the first online-only multiplayer games was also one of the best. Plenty of people still play Tribes 1 and with Tribes: Vengeance coming out soon, it's definitely worth listing. - consonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...And the server has died. May it rest in peace.
- sicc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2http://www.gamerunlimited.com/samp/
You can d/l a San Andreas server there for free. It's the one one I play on all the time, always has a few hundred people online. Always nice to have more people online that I can shoot in the face =P - carlic578, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Soldat is pretty fun. It's a 2d Multiplayer shooter
http://www.soldat.pl/main.php - Eccent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tremulous is a first-person shooter and real-time strategy(base building) game that's a free multi-player, multi-platform(Mac, Windows, and Linux!).
Trailer http://superb-east.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/tremulous/tremulous-promo-II.avi - Poppeseed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Does anybody remember the Battlefield like game that was free (it isn't on that page), and the website even stated it was like Battlefield?
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I believe you're thinking of warrock. Great game, although I just play the desert combat mod for Battlefield 1942 instead.
- KillaGoat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep, I remember it. My friend bought it and payed the monthly fee for about 2 months until he decided the game was too broken.. http://www.wwiionline.com/scripts/wwiionline/be_info.jsp
- MadMan6680, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm surprised they didn't mention War Rock in the FPS section.
Check out http://warrock.net - mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My friends mom was once ranked like #5 in MU online. For Christmas we made him buy her WoW so that she could waste her life even more.
- FatherG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's surprising that they didn't mention Continuum/Subspace. All these years later after Virgin abandoned it the game is still going strong. Check out the link below so you can download the client. Link goes to (IMO) the best server for Continuum, Trench Wars. TW is capture the flag mostly.
I've had the client and all needed files on a usb stick for awhile now. Fun topdown 2d spaceship game.

Still working fine here though.- Pitfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I second continuum. I've wasted hundreds of hours playing that game and it's still fun. The game starts out pretty simple (just get the the glowing orb). You later realize there's other arenas where you have different goals that change the game completely. Arenas such as tourny make the game fun after you get bored of the capture the flag arenas.
Javs for the win!

made in shockwave but an impressive rts and can be downloaded (big download and long loading time though)
requires shockwave so you will likely need windows or mac - TheBored, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0www.freeallegiance.org
Best free game I've ever played. Damn shame more people don't play it, it is one of the few original games left. Everything coming out now is just a rehash of another game. - Bobalobabingbon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Americas Army is a great game, haven't played any of the other ones
- error1312, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0They should've added WarRock indeed. Great game!
- brasso, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Lets not forget Tremulous!
http://tremulous.net/ - idmclaren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anarchy Online is an awesome game, definitely try it out if you're looking for an MMORPG (for free!) It has a HUGE amount of content for the free subscribers. I just recently upgraded to a paid account, I loved it so much. You definitely don't need to do that though to have fun.
- kevinchai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Nice apostrophe's.
- kevinchai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Gunbound: World Champion FTW
- NUBxKILLA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Maybe its just me... but whatever happened to racing games?
One of the free racing games i would recommend trying is Trackmania Nations. There are many players around the world.
http://www.trackmanianations.com/indexUk.php - chasfile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dofus - http://www.dofus.com/ - is a fun and very original MMORPG that's free to play. You are confined to one portion of the map, however; access to the whole world requires a monthly subscription fee. Anyay, its a fun alternative to most MMORPGs because combat is a turn-based tactics system, rather than the typical hack-and-slash.
Tactics Arena is a one-on-one game of tactics similar to chess, but instead of pawns, rooks, and knights there are wizards that cast spells, rangers that can shoot arrows, and... well the knights are still there. - salinemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What, no netrek? Go play whatever you want, I'll be upfront in an AS taking Ear for the win.
- canadianrockstr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Hey you know what a great multiplayer game is?
Life! And you don't even have to download it! Go play Life its great!- AnteChronos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"Go play Life its great!"
Nah, the in-game economy's too screwed up. The money distribution is skewed in favor of twinks whose "parent" characters can afford to give them an early boost. Plus, the only mobs who drop decent loot are the ones that cause the guards to aggro you if you attack them. Not to mention that skilling up in any profession is extremely slow and expensive, causing a lot of characters to plateau at low-profit levels just because they can't afford to skill up any more.
Oh, and the perma-death rule sucks, too.
I might give Life a try if the next patch fixes these flaws, but I'm not holding my breath. - Matri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haven't you heard? There are no more patches. They discontinued support shortly after it was released.
- AnteChronos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"Go play Life its great!"
- somekids, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1With BitTorrent everything is free.
- NUBxKILLA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Until you end up with a lawsuit on your hands.
- omglolbah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Except when you try connecting to the secure server and find that you.... cant ;)
- easyone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4www.onrpg.com has an extensive list of mmorpg and other free/beta/pay to play multiplayer games.
- rsilva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://jogosmp.no.sapo.pt/
- axelbc2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not a mmorpg nor a strategy game, difficult to explain the concept, but a lot of fun, and free: http://www.trendio.com
- spikespeigel42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What ever happened to planeshift? its still around, but no one seems to care about it anymore. Still, its a good game, a very different way to play a mmorpg
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2planeshift is an unplayable waste of time and sanity. It's an ugly, empty box of a world.
- netrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hate to agree, but it has taken forever to develop that game and although everytime I download it they are making progress, it's just not playable.
- tripple-breve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks to those of you who put links to Warsow and Wesnoth. Awesome.
- Charlesbian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Navyfield is a great naval mmorpg. its not like WoW where its turnbased, but rather more like diablo. You start off with a frigrate, train sailors, pick a country (japan, germany, US, or England) and fight with others in battles that can range up to 128 people in size. You can progress to carriers or huge battleships, and theres torpedo and dive bombers whizzing around, AA flak bursting, torpedoes being launched in one typical game. check it out at navyfield.com
- Macberto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.freeinfantry.com - This is a 2D/ isometric view action shooter with different zones/ types of gameplays available. Over 200+ people playing currently at one time.
- benji1974, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://gunz.ijji.com/ Pretty intense gun/sword 3rd/1st person arena style combat game, looks to have some promise and the servers are fast only catch is that you have to launch the game from IE.
- JinxedSoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.sgalaxy.com/ Pretty good game i use to play it all the time. they have free account and pay accounts
- truebullfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone know if F.E.A.R is any good?
- theRIAA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it sucks actually.
try True combat for fast pace FPS, or AA for slow paced - AstralSin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, fear gets old REAL quick... no wonder they gave the entire multiplayer away for free
- theRIAA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it sucks actually.
- AstralSin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you forgot alien arena 2007 as well, http://red.planetarena.org
- Krakn3Dfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've totally gotten pulled into Silkroad Online over the weekend after seeing this. Damn you Digg!
- subnet_rx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, I had totally forgotten about Enemy Territory, downloading now.
