      Attack Retrieve Capture (ARC) is a free multiplayer, 2D computer game originally created by John Vechey (jv) and Brian Fiete (bf) as a college project was later published by Hoopy Entertainment in 1997. The game is primarily capture the flag (CTF), but other game modes exist. In the 2-team CTF mode, each team is trying to capture the other's flag(s). Players pilot small ships equipped with 4 types of weapons: lasers, missiles, bouncy lasers, and grenades.

      $ sudo apt-get install wesnoth*
      The * makes sure all campaigns and sound files also get installed.

  • shinkaide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4People are also starting to realize that offering things for "free" can also be profitable, whether it be through micropayments (for certain added features or optional items), ads, or other things. Either way, it's good for the players and companies as well.

    Just because something is free doesn't mean the quality and the experience has to suffer. On the other hand, with the right approach and some creativity, a free game can really kick ass.

    Starsiege: Tribes -- One of the first online-only multiplayer games was also one of the best. Plenty of people still play Tribes 1 and with Tribes: Vengeance coming out soon, it's definitely worth listing.

    You can d/l a San Andreas server there for free. It's the one one I play on all the time, always has a few hundred people online. Always nice to have more people online that I can shoot in the face =P

  • FatherG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's surprising that they didn't mention Continuum/Subspace. All these years later after Virgin abandoned it the game is still going strong. Check out the link below so you can download the client. Link goes to (IMO) the best server for Continuum, Trench Wars. TW is capture the flag mostly.

    I've had the client and all needed files on a usb stick for awhile now. Fun topdown 2d spaceship game.

    • Pitfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I second continuum. I've wasted hundreds of hours playing that game and it's still fun. The game starts out pretty simple (just get the the glowing orb). You later realize there's other arenas where you have different goals that change the game completely. Arenas such as tourny make the game fun after you get bored of the capture the flag arenas.

    Best free game I've ever played. Damn shame more people don't play it, it is one of the few original games left. Everything coming out now is just a rehash of another game.

  • idmclaren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anarchy Online is an awesome game, definitely try it out if you're looking for an MMORPG (for free!) It has a HUGE amount of content for the free subscribers. I just recently upgraded to a paid account, I loved it so much. You definitely don't need to do that though to have fun.

You are confined to one portion of the map, however; access to the whole world requires a monthly subscription fee. Anyay, its a fun alternative to most MMORPGs because combat is a turn-based tactics system, rather than the typical hack-and-slash.

    Tactics Arena is a one-on-one game of tactics similar to chess, but instead of pawns, rooks, and knights there are wizards that cast spells, rangers that can shoot arrows, and... well the knights are still there.

      Nah, the in-game economy's too screwed up. The money distribution is skewed in favor of twinks whose "parent" characters can afford to give them an early boost. Plus, the only mobs who drop decent loot are the ones that cause the guards to aggro you if you attack them. Not to mention that skilling up in any profession is extremely slow and expensive, causing a lot of characters to plateau at low-profit levels just because they can't afford to skill up any more.

      Oh, and the perma-death rule sucks, too.

      I might give Life a try if the next patch fixes these flaws, but I'm not holding my breath.

You start off with a frigrate, train sailors, pick a country (japan, germany, US, or England) and fight with others in battles that can range up to 128 people in size. You can progress to carriers or huge battleships, and theres torpedo and dive bombers whizzing around, AA flak bursting, torpedoes being launched in one typical game. check it out at navyfield.com
