- detrate, on 10/12/2007, -9/+29So what? It's a good article.
- RaistlinMajere, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23I had no idea that Rockstar was offering GTA and GTA2 free for download now. That is really cool. +Digg for that alone.
- Pureeviljester, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12w0rd, GTA 1+2 are classics. None of this inviting hookers into cars. Kill the line of joggers!
- Frinkahedron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8No soldat? ;p
- cybernetic798, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12I've played some of these games, and they really aren't that fun. Granted a lot of work goes into making these and I certainly don't want to trivialize that, but when people are looking for free games they tend to look for free games that can match commercial ones. Obviously, this isn't easy to do so yea...
What I found to be the best as far as free games goes, was playing on a free Lineage 2 server - find them at http://www.gamesites200.com/lineage2/. The game has a lotta grind in its original form but almost all these 'private' servers run on modified rates (5x exp 5x money 5x item drop etc.). The communities are fairly active, and it's so much fun when you join a clan and take part in some good PvP :)
I was hooked over the summer but once classes started I couldn't spend so much time anymore.
PS: The actual game client is a free download from the official lineage servers, but check the server you are going to play on to make sure you get the right version...there is Chronicles 2, 3, and 4 so you don't want to go download a 1.5GB client and find out you got the wrong version.
PS: The link doesn't work I think so copy and paste it - ScnnrDrkly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wahhhh.
The sites that die away are the ones that remain completely steadfast in their ways and/or do not grow *with* the user community. A gentle nudge or occasional firm hand in things from the owners/creators never hurts but a failure to grow, or growth in a direction that doesn't follow the users, is a death sentence for any community oriented site.
Don't like the article? Don't digg it. Don't like the people? STFU and leave. - cybernetic798, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Hmm while updating this post several times to get the link to point to the right site, at one point I got some weird interface bug that said I had like > 28,000 seconds left to update. I reloaded the page and it said the correct time, which was 20-something. I have a screenshot though if anyone's interested. A bug or a random JS quirk on client-side?
- mushoo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Try the Korean version. It's much better. And still Online. It has more maps and the Item Shop is open.
Korean site. (IE is needed not only for browsing but to install and start the game)

- fodi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm getting GTA2 as we speak. If you've never played it before, do yourself a favour. And don't spare the nuns !
- Anthraxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5WTF?!? I can understand not liking AO, but seriously STFU, its a massive game even without paying for it. There are way worse games that cost infinitly more. You are just immature.
- theseapalm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6GTA 1 + GTA2 + Hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy = DIGG :D.. I've known about the GTA1 and 2 for a long time now, same for the HHGTTG but any list with them deserves to be digged hehehe.
- TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6you can increase your threshold and your able to see all comments in your profile options
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So what? This is pretty good content, who cares if it's on his blog or not. He needed SOME way to share the content.
Hear hear! Stop comment spam! - loomis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If you attempt to download some of these titles from the site that the article links to, you will seemingly get caught in those age-old warez-esque sites where you hunt around forever trying to jump through loops to get to the goods. The No Action Jackson DL site has 6 different javascripts from 6 different tracker sites watching you like falkag and yieldmanager. And the first game on the list isn't even free! It says it's $14.95. No Digg.
- chair, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think it's automatically dugg when you post a story.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In my view it is ok to post a link to a blog if it has original content. A link to a blog that is simply contains a link to the desired content is very bad and should be modded into oblivion. When a digg is to a blog that contains a significant addition to the desired content then at some point it becomes content itself.
I'm not saying what the case is here but I think that JUST because it is in a blog does not necessarily make it bad. - BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Superb List. I forgot that anarchy online was free.
- spiderfish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Right know I'm hooked on TrackMania - http://www.trackmanianations.com/
It's basically a car game with a really simple approach but nevertheless requires some skill to master, since the tracks are very tricky for the most part. The graphics are amazing (runs great on an ati600) but what trully surprised me was the multiplayer... it's so fluid and fast paced that it kept me playing until my fingers were hurting :|
The Nations version of the game was developed to ESWC (a gaming contest) and they made it free so anyone can practice and apply to the competition.
Enjoy! - royeiror, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Scorched 3D is for mac, aswell as a buncha huncha muncha other OS's
check it out
http://www.scorched3d.co.uk/downloads.php - royeiror, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3An awesome free game is Scorched 3D, it's a remake of that classic game scorched earth, plus a bunch of new weapons. The textures are pretty cool, and there is a big on-line comunity, so no need to just play bots.
http://www.scorched3d.co.uk/index.php - penguinix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5IF you want a free and open source game that is actually fun to play I would suggest checking out bzflag. http://www.bzflag.org
- zleetd00d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Ignoring the hackers, it is fun. There are rarely hackers when I play.
- Gnome1300, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well. I'm really glad you mostly enjoyed the list, thanks!
I have to answer at some things:
1st the list has absolutely no relevancy to the 1up one, its very easy to check out
2nd all games are for free and every site linked to is ok
3rd no demos included
4th the games that were included were games I've personally played and enjoyed.... - detrate, on 10/12/2007, -15/+17Well, I wasted enough time clicking around checking out the games (that I didn't know on this site) and I must admit it kept me realitivly entertained. I'll definitely be trying out some of these... save "DOOM, the roguelike"... my imagination isn't what it used to be... and this computer is more powerful than a TI-83 ;). Anywho, I'll digg.
Oh also, - spinchange, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1+2150
- superdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is very true, but that doesn't mean that it's ALWAYS a good idea to submit this kind of thing, especially when we've just had one submitted not so long ago. i can understand the use of this one - it's clear from the comments that many people found new games that they like - but your attitude towards submissions might be a little too open to articles that are just plain crap. but then i guess those don't make it to the front page.
- Flashback, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Great Nostalgic Story!
Btw, i love the new feature of digg, the new Digg Comment System, trolls ***** off! - prkchpsndwiches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anarchy online always seemed pretty lame to me. I mean I know its free(and u get what you pay for). I'd rather plop down $50 every now and play guild wars without the monthly fee.
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4good list.
the hacker game[s] are really cool, check them out! - doubleOdonut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Halo in 2D is just not right, but I thought it was fun.
- falcoboy7, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I'm guessing most aren't for mac? :(
- compgeek275, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hitchhiker's is absolutely amazing. It took me longer to beat (without cheating, that is) than most modern games, and that's with having read all the books more times than I can count. First list I've seen to include it :)
- frakilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm loving the Blossom game. Simple but addictive.
- the1casey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3got it, thanks truepatriot.
- the1casey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4the air hockey game is pretty cool.
- Gnome1300, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If you'd bothered to read through the list, you'd have noticed Grand Theft Auto 2 and Enemy Territory....
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Umm. of all the freeware games I've ever seen, this has quite a few of them that 'match commercial games'
WarRock is essentially the same game as Battlefield 2 (Granted, it's not working at the moment)
FreeCiv is obvious
GTA1 and 2 are even more obvious
Well, 3 but that's still significant enough - Gnome1300, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2No, synchestric... you are so wrong (and lying perhaps?)... This is a product of hard work... Have you seen porrasturvat, Apprentice, Cedric and the Revolution, Heroquest, No action Jackson, The adventures of Fatman etc on the other list? No. You haven't. So...I think you get it, don't you?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4burried, just to spite you :P
Couldnt help myself - ScnnrDrkly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Whenever I see or play games from the "Old Days" I always wind up thinking about Syndicate and Syndicate Wars and how cool it would be if I could get them to run under a current OS or to get an updated version released.
- Gnome1300, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yes...HeroQuest... what a board game... Oh, and madformdness, you don't need any roms etc. These downloads are all legal.
Something else too: THANK YOU ALL for your (mostly) very nice comments. Glad you are enjoying the article. Cheers to all!!! - Gnome1300, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm... I guess that I can't disagree with you on the Anarchy online subject :) Oh, and SWINE was a comercial game...
- Burns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You probably didn't play the pay version which is leaps and bounds better than the free version.
- Gnome1300, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, it is. Isn't it?
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1its a pretty cool game! Im still trying to get the multiplayer to work
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2No, but drinking beer helps make them 'seem' better.
- BurntToast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow... HeroQuest... that game brings back memories.
- blackb0x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I still think Continuum is a great game.
Try it out if you have some free time. It's free and all online
http://beginners.subspace.net/ - gklitt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Did it occur to anyone that in ten years the games that we love now will be considered obsolete and will be available for free? Sweet...
