- muleking, on 10/12/2007, -5/+65No big deal, PS3 and Wii are for different audiences.
PS3 is for men in top hats, wearing monocles and checking their pocket watches.
Wii is for people who want to play videogames. - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -7/+56Sony will be Sony's undoing, to say nothing of blu-ray
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -7/+53The blu-ray will be sony's undoing.
- Spaz007, on 10/12/2007, -6/+47With Sony pushing back the Blu-ray and other issues with the PS3. I don't think Nintendo will have any problems beating Sony out of the gate.
- Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39Funny thing, the other day I went to get a DS lite from bestbuy. Saw a couple others doing the same thing, all over 20, one possibly over 30. I look at the 360 kiosk, and there is a little girl that couldn't be over 10 playing it with more kids in line. It doesn't mean anything, but really, what system isn't for kids?
- ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -8/+45FormatC: How could it be easier for you to buy a PS3? The date on which the Wii is released has no bearing whatsoever on mortgage rates or loan interest rates.
None. - ingoldsby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23You mean the affordable console that actually offers new gameplay? I know I'll be picking one up instead of a PS3.
- mayan, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29And hopefully, that same week Microsoft will drop the price of 360 to steal market share away from Sony as well.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22i think the ps3s demographic will mostly be sweaty rich boys + the mtv viewing demographic, while the wii is clearly being marketed to everyone (with the name, mission statements, etc.)--not just gamers even
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20So that just leaves - what's out next:
PS3, Vista, Duke Nukem Forever.
Or all three, on the same day. You'll know when, the ground will get very cold. - SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I also think if supply issues are a problem for Sony like they seem to be, Sony might not have demo units up in stores when the Wii does. They made the same mistake with the PSP vs. the DS. It took them many months to get working demos into stores. People don't want to buy what they can't try first. I'm sure when people try the Wii in the stores they'll decide it's more exciting than the PS3 for the money anyways.
- cwestpha, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Sony wont do that. They have been quoted at some places during E3 as pretty much admitting they are using the PS3 as their Blue-Ray Trojan horse. Lets remember that Sony does not have a good track record of formats they introduce. I think it has something to do with Sony's media holdings trying to get the last word in what the technology divisions do.
- atlantisceo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16The 360 already is under $500
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18The gamecube and XBox do not compare in the same way that the Wii & PS3 do not compare.
One is for insecure uptight teenagers and the other is for everybody. I'll leave you to put the labels in the right places. - saudama, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18I researched the videogame industry as a college project, and the facts speak volumes about how the Wii will be the best next-gen console. It's not fanboyism speaking here, it's a scientific, fact-based look into the industry. Gamers don't want a great looking game which sucks. They prefer good gameplay.
My money goes with Nintendo on this one. - samuraitux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11don't talk bad about my paperweight
- bndocksnt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15i look forward to the wii. it will find a comfortable home next to my xbox360. the question i can't answer is whether a ps3 will ever grace my living room. sony these days is seeming so much like that overhyped chick your buddy is telling you about, and then you're wing-manning for him, and all drunk and you see her for the first time and you're like: "yeah, she's hella fine," but then you take the plunge and wake up the next day and all her make-up has crumbled off and now you're like: "hmm, what happened to the really glossy pretty thing last night that seemed really awesome until i tried to play with it?"
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Free year of XBL? The decision would be made for me.
- eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Err, the global sales for the Gamecube and the Xbox are not that far apart. They are both practically tied for the distant second to Sony. It's nothing to brag about, really.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The difference between XBox and Gamecube sales was 1.4 Million units at the end of 2005 (22M vs 20.6M). That's practically a rounding error when compared to Sony's numbers (> 100M).
Here's a more interesting question: Will the XBox 360's head start translate into the same kind of dramatic, absolute market dominance that the PS2 enjoyed?
Not likely, in my opinion. The PS2 was the perfect amount of technology released at the perfect time -- a DVD when most people didn't have DVD players, and dramatically better graphics that enabled dramatically better games -- and at the right price. The 360 was released without next-gen DVD capability, and while it brings HD gaming to the masses, most people don't have HD sets. In that sense, the 360's head start just isn't nearly as valuable as it was for the PS2.
There's more to this business than just being the first on the block. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12BREAKING NEWS
This just in: Anonymous internet dork speaks. Full story at 11. - mushoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9A year ago who could have forseen Nintendo going straight for the jugular?
- iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Even more chances for Wii to be bigger than PS3, but probably it will anyways.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I'm getting a Wii before PS3 regardless of the order they come out in. And I think the majority of the internet is with me on this one.
- Hawk2007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm starting to think Sony is botching the entire PS3 release. And it's not rash to make this assumption. Take a look at past sony failures. For example, the PSP is nowhere near as popular as I thought it would be. don't get me wrong, it's a good unit and sold decently, but it's not a must have like the Ps2 seemed to be at this stage in the console war.
- Wonotch, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13@rasterbator
Ok, seriously, I'm an apple user and think people go a little overboard in labeling others as "fanboys", but this is just rediculous.
THIS ARTICLE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH APPLE. - cwestpha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Well Sony needs the PS3 out before they anger any more fans and developers (seriously if they keep this up the launch title list will be huge). Microsoft needs more OS money so Vista needs to come out. And as for Duke Nukem Forever? I think dev costs are about half a million dollars so far. There is only so far selling Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition can take ya. :p
- afeitarse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Hawk, that's just not true...I may get some boos, but I'd have to say that, when it comes to hanging out and playing games with friends, the n64 and snes win hands down. Street fighter, mario kart, smash bros, mario party? What beats that? If I want to play a fancy multiplayer game, I'll do it on my computer and an internet connection.
- TheWorkz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Even though it is under $500, it would just be even more of a dagger into Sony if Microsoft dropped the price $50 before holliday's.. Or Threw in a free game or two with the purchase of a $400 system.
- RockSuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The original Xbox was released in the US on November 15th, 2001 and the GameCube released on November 18th, 2001. So the GameCube did not have an earlier release than the Xbox that is unless you mean Japan where I'm pretty sure the GameCube has a lead on the Xbox.....
- mraty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@samuraitux
"we all know that when people went looking for a 360 and couldn't find it, they bought something else."
What else did they buy? Unlike this coming holiday season, there were no other "next gen" consoles available when the 360 came out. - Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Great Scott, Marty!
- markp93, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I just bought a PS*2* today, and after researching the release history and the _14_ versions of the PS2 that have come out since 2000, it seems like the 'PS3 having issues before release' thing is history repeating itself. In hindsight, though, the PS2 was fairly successful, so in light of that Sony should be able to weather the short-term problems with PS3 and eventually deliver a successful product, IMHO.
- solarbeat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5>> If PS2's out sell PS3's. Now that would be funny!
>Yeah, an absolute screamer. Almost as funny as how the Gameboy has outsold the GC and DS.
Uh, I think you missed the point. Cbiz probably meant that it would be funny if PS2's outsold PS3's after the PS3 launch (like recent figures have shown the PS2 outselling the 360). - ZetaFunction, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Personally, I plan on buying both, I mean I love nintendo games and I'm a MGS whore so I gotta get MGS4 when that comes out for PS3. It may be expensive, but for me at least, I can justify getting both.
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7At this rate, the PS4 will be out before the PS3.
- samuraitux, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9if the Wii gets release before PS3, it will definitely hurt Sony because there are tons of undecided customers who don't know what new console they are going to get and are waiting to see what each company is offering. also if the Wii can ship more units too then the more customers they are going to steal from Sony since we all know that when people went looking for a 360 and couldn't find it, they bought something else.
- Ninjaneer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@FormatC
I would guess the likelihood of a PS3 price drop before release is next to none. It wouldn't surprise me if they actually raised the price a bit before launch (but we all know that won't happen either). I understand being proud of your products and hoping the rest of the world follows suit, but Sony's arrogance in regards to the PS3 is completely unwarranted.
The Playstation name should be very important to them, as they are second rate in almost all their other markets (home theater, digicams, car audio, etc.). They want to be high-end, but their products don't deliver. I really hate to see them drive this one in the ground too. - gonosis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In my honest opinion, and people can digg me down all they want, I think that anyone who brings "past year sales statistics" and statements or points that start with "economically speaking..." are just fanboys looking to push their console choice further.
I want to play a 360. looks bitching. A bit pricy.
I want to play a Wii. Most likely what i'll get, due to cash flow
I want to play a PS3, and probably will at a friends place, but it's too much for me, price-wise.
3 consoles, why the hell do you argue about whos winning, whos losing, why not shut up and play them?
Some of you fanboys suck the fun out of video games. - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4reggie's talked about the GC before as a failure--they didnt have a good launch lineup, not that great publicity and a lot of dry spells... i think nintendo has recognized their mistakes and will succeed with the wii
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the reason betamax lost was because, even though it was higher quality, you could not fit a whole movie on a single tape initially. Thats how it fell through. I dont see that happening this time around.

http://www.hddvdprg.com/about/member.html - ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I didn't have any doubt the Wii would get to market before the PS3. I thought this was already pretty much everyone's suspicion actually.
- tjkombo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would not have agreed with you a month ago, but now I think I do agree. Looking at all this from a business standpoint, Nintendo should come out on top or at least a strong tie to the 360. If they keep playing their cards the way they have been though, Nintendo should be back enjoying its number one spot. Only time will tell though. I must say if your in marketing or your a business major this is going to be a fun generation because you cannot truly tell how things will turn out.
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4if its released early, i dont think it will make a difference on either system.
People who are gonna buy the wii, are gonna buy the wii whenever it comes out.
People who are gonna buy the ps3, are gonna buy the ps3 whenever it comes out.
the prices are too different, so people probably definately know what they are gonna buy.
and regardless of what the comments say, almost all the comments are fanboy material. There is no doubt the ps3 is gonna sell crazy (dont mod me down, go read all other articles on sony on digg, and you will see even fanboys like yourself are agreeing with this)
comments about bluray:
This next media format war is completely stupid, as a much superior format is being developed, and will prbly be out in a few years (holographic storage). That being said, there is a ongoing battle, between hddvd and bluray. As it stands right now, blu-ray is the obvious victor (dont deny it, facts speak for themselves), but who knows where technology will lead us. They are already developing 200GB br disks. As a storage format, i can see it be good, but as a multimedia format who knows where it will go
PS3 demographic:
Unlike many of you that like to believe that what you think, is the voice of gamers, it's not. Majority of gamers dont go online read the forums, and read tech sites. They just game, and thats as far as they get into it.
even though certain types of gamers (people who prefer a certain style of games) wont buy it because of the gimmicks every week (which is idiotic, you should buy it if its good, not that you despise/love the company, thats called fanboism), many gamers will still buy it.
then there are the home entertainment enthusiasts who would be interested in buying it, aswell as people who like to buy bleeding edge gadgets.
Their market base of gamers may have decreased, but i can see the increase in other consumer markets increasing
and finally the rich kids will only get ps3 comments:
i am neither rich nor poor. I have been saving money a bit on the side, to buy a wii and a ps3. saying that ps3 is for rich people is idiotic - ryhalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know it was taken directly from the article, but FYI:
"The latest word JIVES with..." ---> "The latest word JIBES with..." - Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Saudama, if you had to write a paper on it, can we read it? I just don't feel like doing the research :P
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I thought MTV and MS pretty much went after the sweaty college crowd...
The X360 "launch" on MTV seemed pretty definitive to me. - Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I love MGS games also, not enough to get a PS3 I guess. It's only a matter of time before it is ported to other systems. The creator said himself he want to run away from the PS3.
- FormatC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@dharm
Most intelligent post on Digg I have read!
Good Job - rockintom99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, because no one wants a small Wii (sorry, couldn't pass that up!)
