- rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -11/+65Yet more bad news for the PS3, if true.
Fully functional PS3 betas still do not exist
Might have external 400 watt unit
Cell might be downgraded to 2.8 gigahertz - BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+53Historically, giant enemy crabs have only been known to attack Japan. (And I'm okay with that.)
- BBX25, on 10/12/2007, -19/+63Sony is really testing out how many nails can be put into a coffin, and I commend them for it. I really want to know.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+46How about downgrading the *price*?
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -15/+55PS3 owners will be the last ones laughing when giant enemy crabs attack earth.
- Aux88, on 10/12/2007, -7/+45A fanboy is a fanboy regardless if it's nintendo, sony, ms, apple, etc.
You can't honestly believe that "nintendo fanboys are all 12 year olds who distort the facts :(, but sony fanboys always get it right and are generally teh awesome!!~!" - YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -14/+50Well. It's more like beating a dead horse, really. The reason we're kicking Sony is because, as usual, they're overpromising and then coming up with crazy-assed comments that offend the consumer and casual gamers.
If the PS3 flops (and, in reality, it will be a dull thud as millions will still buy it) it's Sony's fault. - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -17/+46"this all sourced from an IM conversation. no way to identify if he is who he says he is."
Thats the point. He doesn't want to be identified because people like that get fired. Is it really hard to believe that they're lowering the console specs AGAIN for the 10th time? I don't think so.
The real question is, are you getting the 600 dollar console that sony said you'd get at e3, or are you getting the 600 dollar console after sony is done raping the specs down?
The PS3 is their sorry excuse to get the blu-ray player into peoples living rooms since they're so obsessed about coming on top of media format war they're willing to screw over the customer in the process. If they stuck with DVD then we'd be having a cheaper PS3 and cheaper games. If you buy a PS3, you're just telling them that you're O.K. with the way they screw loyal customers over. Get yourself a wii60. Honestly. - evirus, on 10/12/2007, -13/+35this all sourced from an IM conversation. no way to identify if he is who he says he is.
plus there is a reason why sony wouldnt want this getting out, because they probably arn't done with the decision, for all we know they could be in the process of trying to fix the problems, and as such arn't committing an offical statement untill they cant figure a way around the problems.
If people catch wind of the problem, deside to ignore the PS3 even if the statment is false or they fix the problem without downgrading the system, that person would still be ignoring everything about the PS3, all resualting from an unoffical statment that shouldnt have been made in the first place. the workers know the rules and if they dont fallow them, guess what, they should get canned, would you expect anything different from other companies?
and honestly, even if the "floor models" where running 2.8, could anyone tell the difference?
tetris and zelda where great games, what where they running at? far less then 3 gigahertz, all this ranting about unrealised specs is a load of crap you can have a game with high quality graphics but sucky in every other catagory, just as much as you can have a great game with sucky graphics, which would you rather have? from the sound of it some would pick a pretty looking, suck fest rather then a great playing but visualy unappealing game. - mrtibbs309, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25@ orlando
It's not Sony bashing. It's the general feeling by the public right now towards the PS3. Check any major gaming site and you will see many are worried the PS3 is digging it's own grave. - se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Yup Klisk is 100% right... Everybody on digg is so ignorant to the fact that DIGG AND JOYSTIQ AND E3 GOERS DON"T REPRESENT THE GENERAL GAMING POPULATION! Go onto Xbox Live... nearly 99% of the people I ask in a Call of Duty game say they are going to get a ps3, and that the Wii is "gay" (not that i agree, teh wii is good, underpowered, but I suppose current gen systems are too then, and they work fine).
Ask any person you know (who you haven't already persuaded into liking the Wii) that doesn't read Digg, or gaming sites flooded with fanboyist remarks... Most people will get a ps3. I think that Ps3 will definitely sell more than the Wii (as hard as it if for even me to believe), because the gamecube gave such a bad rep for Nintendo to most teens (any teen i know thinks Nintendo is Kiddy, and their friends will be like "Omg, you fag pussy with urz Nintendo Gay-cube".)
Ps3 will sell more than any Wii fanboy chooses to Believe. Sony has a good rep to the people who don't read up every waking second on their news. I know 2 people who have ever heard of rootkit, and I know no-one that it effected (damaged their computer). - kuchino, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20then what would be the darn point of paying so much? Wow blur-ray? I don't mind waiting 2 or 3 years, to get a player it for $100
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18You were making fun of somebody? Oh, I'm sorry. I couldn't tell, what with all of the random letters and numbers and all...
- smartpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17"Even if they underclock the Cell, big deal. It's all about parallelism."
How is parallism relevant? It doesn't matter if you have 1 core or 100 cores, a drop in clock speed causes a proportional drop in execution speed, period.
"Would you pay double the price to gain 400MHz on a Pentium or AMD chip where it does?"
Again, I don't see how this is relevant at all. Who says a 3.2 GHz Cell is twice as expensive as a 2.8 GHz?
"Chances are not, and you would arguably see more of a difference there."
Like I said before, a decrease in clock speed means a proportional decrease in execution speed, period. Also, Cell's PPE was designed to be a relatively simple, weak CPU, that makes up for its shortcomings by reaching extremely fast clockspeeds. Most pre-PS3 buzz said that Cell would be running at 4 GHz at its introduction. Anyway, it's especially disappointing to see a CPU like Cell fall short of its initial promise. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22@Se1zure
Well. Sony UMDs can hold 1.8 to 1.9GB Data. Star Wars Battlefront 2 for PSP and a lot of other games are under 300 MB. Still great games...
Also. The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfal had twice the area of Britain and over 15,000 Cities
"If you look at it from this standpoint, a you would need to buy 5 $50 Wii games to match one $60 (probably) ps3 game."
Except the Wii games will not set you back $600 initially and be more fun... - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19You should put that on a blog so it can be digged.
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15He's right you know. I know many people, and a few got a 360 pretty much for Halo 3 and Oblivion. There is little else 360 exclusives(I know Oblivion is not exclusive, but most don't PC game). The Gameboy is for nerds, most would say. Do you see anyone else at school linking up? Probably middle or grade school. But the Gamecube really ruined it for Nintendo.
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -10/+22Even the "interviewer" said it's speculation and rumor, and that's not worth the front page.
- swoosh_bnd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15They may be reducing the features, but they certainly won't be reducing the price. Is it just me, or does something seems a little off balance there?
- 13tongimp, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20"The connected PS3-party wet blanket who brought us covert info on the PlayStation 3 has dug up some dirt from a phantom insider who claims the PS3 may see even more downgraded specs."
Wow, it doesn't get anymore unsubstantiated than that.
Take with a grain....nay, a whole cylinder shaped carton of salt. - frank3000, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16i say again - we need a way to digg down stories just like we can do to comments
- SoberEmu, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18@se1zure
"YOu could fit probably the entire wii launch collection on one ps3 game. Hours of extras. bigger maps. My point is made. Go buy 42 wii games, and i'll buy one ps3 game, and we'll see who spent the most money."
Your point is not made; your point is stupid. Even with the extra space available on a Blue-Ray disk, you'll still have to buy 1 game per disk. And if a developer crammed multiple games on one disk, they'd charge you per game not per disk. Some people are fanboys with their enthusiasm; you're a fanboy with your ludicrous logic. - salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15@se1zure
You obviously have no idea how a game actually works, disk space has nothing to do with gameplay;
A Dual layer DVD is more than enough data to put any game on for the next 4 - 5 years at least.
when you actually break a game down, the actual levels take very little room, take oblivion for example, the actual LEVEL information fits in around 8 megs. everything over that is visual fluff - another example would be Spore, the entire universe will only fill a few megs. Hellgate london, again will have dynamically built levels, so not only will you get endless unique gameplay, the game can remain small.
In fact, the only games I can think of where Data=Gameplay are those old school shooters on rails, where the backdrop was pre-rendered, and the occasional FMV adventure - Really, with a few notable exceptions, genre's better left to die.
If games needed huge amounts of space we'd have seen them already, the PC unlike the console markets isn't as restricted in how large games can be, it's rare to see a game on PC fill a DVD let alone need several - yet there is no reason why games couldn't ship on 8 DVDs, except, no one needs that much space. - se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19"it has ridge racer on it.. Ridddddddddddddddge Racer..."
The funny part is that I have heard that a million times, and it has NEVER been funny. - metacoola, on 10/12/2007, -13/+22Just because its anonymous doesn't mean its completely false either. It could easily be true, its not an outrageous statement. Just like how there was an insider saying how the ps3 would be bigger at e3 because they couldn't fit in all the components. And as we all saw, that person wasn't full of it.
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -15/+24An IM conversation from a "secret source" is not a good source of information. When the real specs are released, then post it on digg. This is just some more *****.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Yeah, think deepthroat, but on a more trivial scale.
And instead of government corruption it's video game problems.
Anonymous does not always equal true, although it shouldn't be taken as fact on first glance either. I'm waiting for more news. - AlexLand, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16 I'm just tuning out all this anti-PS3 news. I'll just be curious to see how it actually turns out. I don't care if it's got a blowjob machine built in, I won't be buying one until the price goes down. I'm incredibly happy with my 360 and I'll be getting a Wii the day it comes out. I've yet to see one thing on the ps3 that screams 'BUY ME!'.
- se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13"and exactly what makes your standpoint easy to relate to for us?"
You must not have read my comment, or if you did, then either:
a. you have no friends other than your ones online
b. you don't play any games online
c. you don't know anyone that onwed a gamecube
d. you were never a teenager during the gamecube release. - swimmingbird67, on 10/12/2007, -19/+27lol, did some of you idiots actually believe that? lol!
that was total bullsh**.
i think some of you need to remember, JUST BECAUSE IT'S ON THE INTERNET DOESN'T MAKE IT TRUE. - Ricapar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Now be honest. You probably -would- buy it if it had a blowjob machine built in.
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15@se1zure: No other console is adapting high storage as standard. Simply because its not necessary. High storage is good for the gen after this, but games haven't gotten to the point where they need more than one or two DVDs. Plus, this only counts for EXCLUSIVE ps3 games. No cross console game maker is going to add "special content" just because the PS3 has more space.
@foolfromhell: Got that right. Go wii60, its like the best combo of consoles. 360's online games plus the fun games of wii = infinite fun. - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17Pretty much every gamer that doesn't keep up with gaming news (90% of them) are probably excited on the PS3 based on hype.
They also are ignorant about the pricepoint, and they have no clue what bluray is and how it would effect the price, and the ethics of Sony's business. Why are they so obsessed with standards, yet they never learned the right way to market them?
Well... We'll see what happens. I want a Wii, and maybe a 360. PS3 is totally out until a lot of pricedrops down the road...
Unlike other next-gen console wars, I have no clue what will happen this time! Only thing I know is that Nintendo is definitely back! They may not take number 1, but who cares? - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9my favorite part is this:
"Phantom Insider says: I won't comment any further
Red says: hint?
Phantom Insider says: No
Red says: come on, this is anonymous
Phantom Insider says: I can't tell you more
Phantom Insider says: I do not want to lose my job "
LOL... if this is real, fact that you are releasing company information at all... will get you fired - rYno, on 10/12/2007, -13/+20is anybody even wanting the PS3 anymore? I mean come on...
friggin sony is insane - they've jumped the shark. - cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Sarcasm escapes you althe3rd.
- shaselai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Right, i mean if he is doing it "anonymously" and he wont get caught it doesnt really matter what else he's gonna say. And yea, i think the correct response to it should've been
Phantom Insider says: I don't want to getting sued to hell in ADDITION to LOSING MY JOB. - pjsk8, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12"Go buy 42 wii games, and i'll buy one ps3 game, and we'll see who spent the most money."
You're completely missing the point. Storage doesn't mean a damn thing if it's not even storing a quality game. Nintendo has been konwn to realease fun, addictive games (not trying to be a Nintendo fanboy, seeing as how I'm more of a Sony fanboy myself). If a company can create a relatively (compared to the blu-ray storage size) small game, then why would you actually NEED to pay for a seemingly useless disk? - HPSauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Some of you guys should really read the story, or at least get the gist of it, before commenting "Sony is doomed!111". The source appears to be an IM conversation, for christ's sake!
- egrabosky, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I have this feeling in my belly that they are going to scrap the ps3. Fanboys attack!
- shaselai, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9regardless whether this is true or not (i seriously doubt it) but honestly, how many averag gamers gonna read forums and sites like this? I think people who normally read these sites are more fanboys or techies than just normal gamers. And like couple of posters above, it all comes down to the result. If I can play great games that are oveall better than 360 (like sony said they are) then i am happy. i dont care if they have gnomes in that machine as long as it gives me hours of fun with great games.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Because of the titles, I still want it as much as I want the Wii. A lot of people are complaining about how expensive the PS3 is going to be. Well, the PS2 has been out for about 6 years and still getting heavy use. Console upgrades are less frequent than PC upgrades for me. The way I see it, at current rates I've been dumping around $2000 into a new computer every two years (it's actually a four year cycle for each computer since I'm actually swapping back and forth between upgrading my desktop and upgrading my laptop). When I realize that, $600 for 6+ years of entertainment does not feel like I'm actually being raped, it comes close, but it doesn't cross the boundary for me, especially considering the fact that Sony is selling the system for a loss.
And for people who think Sony is going to fail, you guys obviously don't play online Sony exclusives like SOCOM. There are already many many people already waiting, cash in hand, to purchase the next gen Sony Computer Entertainment System. I think the worst Sony could do with the PS3 is come in 3rd place or tie with the 360 just because of their momentum from the PS1 and PS2. - Alphabet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@seizure
it's funny when you realize he's using a lot of fake enthusiasm to try to pump up the room. It's like your boss yelling out "GOOOOO TEAM!!!" and you're just standing there with the rest of your co-workers thinking "man, my boss is insane." - Dari, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Kotaku is the tabloid of the gaming press. I wouldn't take their word too seriously.
- se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Yeah, I want laid back gaming. If I'm caffinated, I'll play teh Wii, but sometimes I'm just lazy, wanna lay back, slouch, and play something without a ton of movement. I'll play the ps3 then. 360 is fun, but huge lack of games.
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10"I don't know about this article, and I am not remotely interested in PS3."
you seem to be pretty interested in the ps3, took the time to read the article, and they post a comment about it... - awa64, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It could just be that anything further than what he'd said at that point would serve to *identify* him as the leak...
- inforcer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8"Cheaper isn't better. You can fit 6x (or more) of a game onto a disk. While it makes the ps3 more expensive, your going to get countless more hours of play from a single game."
Bigger isn't better either. It can work both ways. Half-Life 2 was a lot bigger (MB wise) then the first, was able to be put on a bigger media (DVD), but there was not as many hours of game play as the original Half-Life 1. Bigger space does not always promote longer games.
I also agree with another commenter regarding Sony using the PS3 to push their blue-ray technology. Not that I am against it, they can do what they want. After all they have spent how much money developing that technology? I can see why they are using blue-ray instead of a dual layer DVD for their games. - Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Orlando, regardless of if you want more or less sony bashing, it isn't the point. No one is bashing Sony. Just because you evidently work for Sony, doesn't mean the world revolves around them. The simple fact is, the PS3 is $600, it just lost even more features, and there STILL isn't a fully functional working version. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's delayed even more; side-note, I find it hard to believe anyone will buy this POS...I do not know one person who is looking forward to it, not one.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The demos looked fine to me.
Dev units always have extra RAM. Dev Xboxes have 128MB of RAM instead of 64MB.
I have to say, 2GB is perhaps excessive though.
I think that once the developers get their games packed into RAM correctly, it'll be fine. I think they were just trying to avoid the long load times unfinished games always have because the developer hasn't had time to pack it onto the disc correctly yet. I remember waiting 90 seconds for levels to load on Hydro Thunder on XBox when it was shown at E3! -
