- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -16/+246Having a half-dozen consoles is like having a half-dozen women. You think it's cool at first. But then you get herpes.
- Mystikal, on 10/12/2007, -26/+93Thats the one thing everyone wants...
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+57I think Tycho and Gabe said it best:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2006/20060109h.jpg - gwjc, on 10/12/2007, -12/+62Of course it's nice to have, but I wouldn't say "everyone wants" it; I know a lot of people who've never put one of their PS1 disks into their PS2.
- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -16/+53You haven't lived until you slide your ps1 disc into your ps2. Mmmm...saucy.
- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36Maybe he's confusing the word 'gamers' with squirrels. You've all seen the PSP commercials, they obviously only like current new games and not the old stuff.
- Overdose, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33I have never owned the original xbox. But I recently bought a 360, and I would like the fact to be able to play the classics. Same with Sony, I play the old final fantasy games all the time. I would go to EB games and look for old games that I used to enjoy and pay 6 bucks, and still enjoy them. Gameplay is way more important than graphics.
- zorikin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Yet they are totally reversing this policy with Wii, which is physically compatible with GCN discs, and compatible with the entire Nintendo line all the way back to NES via the virtual console. Even the DS is backwards compatible with GBA cartridges. I guess their strategy here is that when you are gambling on a new technology, compatibility can give you a safety net.
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22It gives you a bigger launch library is what it does.
With the backwards compatability and virtual console, the Wii is set to have the biggest launch library of any console ever. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I think it's a selling point, even if people don't actually take advantage of it. It certainly is to me -- as someone who doesn't own many consoles (esp. older ones), the thought that I can pick up a new console, play new games AND use it to catch up on all the classics I've never played is a *huge* bonus.
In fact, I think it's probably gonna be one of the biggest things the wii will have going for it. - BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21You shouldn't spam in your comments, elroy.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I would not have bought an Xbox 360 that couldn't play Halo.
- spidermanspants, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Moore's an idiot
- def1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13That's crazy. If there was no BWC, everyone on an Xbox would be playing Halo and no one on a 360 would be able to. He's high if he thinks the Halo junkies are going to pay several hundred dollars just to lose the ability to play it. That goes for several games, but usually the flagship titles. Sure you can keep your old console, but backwards compatibility is a must.
- makario, on 09/03/2009, -2/+14I care. When the PS2 came out, I thought, "Well, what's the big deal? I'll wait until the PS3 comes out and I'll save. Besides, I can always play my neighbors."
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15"Besides, without achievements, what's the point anymore ;)"
Er... fun? - msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17In this console war a lot of rather ridiculous things have been said. I have to say that Peter Moore has taken the cake for foor-in-mouth this time. (Sony tried quite hard but alas...)
Is he really saying that no one wants to relive:
The Halo games
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow
Grand Theft Auto
Ninja Gaiden
Sure you could bring out the old monster out of the attic, but think about the Japanese market where the size really matters (and who really wants that hideous thing in their gaming rig?). Also, I think the truth is that people do care about it, but its omission isn't a deal breaker. - cohortq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12You guys remember EGM Dan Hsu's interview with Michael Moore:
http://www.1up.com/do/feature?pager.offset=1&cId=3147131
EGM: OK, we're going to throw two games at you at a time, and we want you to tell us which one you like better.
PM: Ugh, just like saying which of my kids do I love more.
EGM: We hope we've made these easy for you. So: Splinter Cell Chaos Theory or Sneakers?
PM: [Laughs] Well, as fond as I was of Sneakers, I have to say that Splinter Cell probably [tops] it.
EGM: How about Soul Calibur II or Kabuki Warriors?
PM: Well, that would be Soul Calibur II.
EGM: Next: Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball or Barbie Horse Adventures: Wild Horse Rescue?
PM: Ah, Xtreme Volleyball...anything that [Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu] Itagakisan does is always a big favorite with me. He's always been a big supporter of the platform, and it would be disloyal for me not to choose his title.
EGM: So here's what we're getting at: You picked three Xbox 1 games that aren't backwards compatible on the Xbox 360, and the other ones—Sneakers, Kabuki, and Barbie—are. It's a weird list, especially when you exclude the heavy hitters.... - cameron074, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12good point about nintendo. Personally would rather have the compatibility. I didn't spend close to a grand on all the xbox games I bought just to have to shove them in the trash when the 360 came out.
- dgiaimo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Parokki -
Yes. The Atari 7800 could play Atari 2600 games. - Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Life would be so much harder without these corporate bigwigs telling us what we should want.
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10While he is spamming, I have to agree with the man. I was a wee kidlet when the NES came out, and it took years to convince my dad that buying me an NES "when you have all those damn Atari cartridges that it won't use" was still a good idea. Although the "continue whining until the issue is resolved in your favor" tactic worked (actually, I think my grandparents ended up buying me one...) it pretty much shot any chance at an SNES when it was launched... my NES had to make it all the way until the PS1 days when I was finally at a point of making such purchases on my own. Its torture, and I hate to see any child go through that LOL.
- CatfishJones, on 10/12/2007, -22/+30I keep my old consoles. Backwards compadibility can be buggy and incomplete (ala 360). Plus, I like having a half-dozen consoles under my TV.
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11If a new GTA comes out, i would still enjoy playing my old GTA SA, no matter what. : /
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Haha. I was about to say "Well I can play Barbie Horse Adventures, so what do I care?"
- ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Someone who posts stupid comments like that doesn't deserve to have the TechTV logo as their avatar.
- Krush, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Actually, all those games are on the list of compatible games for the 360. If you actually read the article you'll see that "gamers don't care about backward compatibility" is taken out of context, he was saying "at a point" you have enough compatibility and the gamers no longer care for more, and I think he's right. He's basically telling us to not expect to many more games to show on the compatibility list.
Sorry to repeat some of what Marti said, we posted at the same time. - JustJon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I think backwards compatibility is important at the beginning of the system cycle, where there's only a limited number of games available for the new console, but plenty of the previous.
When I got my PS2, I played some of the PS1 games that were still coming out on my PS2 because it was easier than switching between the two consoles. After the initial 6 months of owning it (I didn't get it when it launched, but at a point where there will still some significant games or I still had some unfinished PS1 games), I rarely if ever played PS1 games. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I was going to say, surely they misprinted the title and name of the person making the quote. Shouldn't it be Kaz Hirai from Sony spouting this crap?
- dWhisper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Backwards Compatbility is a huge thing at the launch of a console, but as it matures, becomes less and less important, as the existing library matures. When I got my PS2, I used it for Tony Hawk 2, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy 7, etc. But as my PS2 library grew, my desire to play my PSX titles dropped.
The same, ultimately, will happen with the Xbox 360. There are a ton of titles I wish I could play (Top Spin, though TS2 is out now, so I'm good), but as more stuff comes out, I have enough stuff to fill my times. Sure, the random urge to play some old title might go unfufilled, but that gets to be few and far between. - Frank_the_Tank, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Moore's just backpeddling because their crappy engineers can't get their $hit together to get the rest of the library ported. They just wanted an easy route to tout backwards-compatibility at launch. Now that people know that it's not like what Sony had with the PS2 or what Nintendo plans on doing with the Wii, he's completely downplaying it.
Do I personally care about backwards compatibility? It's not a deal-breaker. Would it convince me more to buy an xbox 360 if all my games worked on it (and with a bump in resolution)? Of course.
People do care. Sony and Nintendo certainly think so... - kimos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Everyone gives MS such a a hard time for partial backwards compatibility... I think all or none is a pretty reasonable request.
As for the article, I don't agree at all. One of the top reasons I'm getting a Wii is that I'll be able to play all the GC games that I missed out on since I never got a Cube, without having to buy two new consoles. - dudinatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love the Internet. One comment and boom, it blows up. Everyone hears it, and the reactions are wide reaching. Microsoft is listening (as evident with the upcoming dashboard upgrade), so I'm confident this will be addressed soon enough. +digg.
- Meta4, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15Funny, that's the one reason I didn't bother picking one up at launch. You know, besides the whole "not being able to find one" thing.
- martissimo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7i think he is really saying with all the big names (like you mention) on the already backwards compatible list, and really quite a few of the lesser known titles as well that it really isn't much of a priority for them at this point (read not profitable). i don't see what the big deal is, they are still working on more games, just not as fast as they once were.
the list is pretty large already really, i was looking through it comparing it to my titles to see if i could find any single game i own which is not backwards compatible, i thought i would get em on Namco Museum, but even that sucker is on the list.
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm - ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I would say that, while it's not a major, "must have," feature for me, it's definately nice to have. I would rather have one console hooked up to my TV that can play all my old games as well as the new games, rather than buying a TV with multiple input jacks or some kind of switch box to connect 10 or more consoles to.
Different strokes for different folks. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Whats Peter Moore on?
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Backwards compatability would be nice, but if it's not total, it's not useful. The purpose of backwards compatability is not to be able to play old games on a new system; That's just the result. The purpose is to eliminate an old console from your living room spread. I would like to confidently replace my XBox with an XBox 360, but alas, since the compatability is not complete, and it's likely that most of the games in my collection will not be included, I'm keeping my old XBox.
- rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7One of the reasons I want the wii is the virtual thingy.... OMG... I just discovered Im not a gamer :-S
I'll need to finish mario bros to calm down... - moges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Backwards compatability is the reason I'm buying a Wii on launch date. I have a gamecube now and like the games I have on it (SSB, Soul Calibar 2 I play mainly) and while I will also be getting the new Zelda on launch date, the fact that I can play my gamecube games on the Wii was the tipping point between me "Just getting Zelda for GCN" and me getting "Zelda for Wii + Wii + etc" on launch date.
Nintendo definatly did the right thing adding backwards compatability to the Wii. While I don't really like the other consoles that much (thats not an argument for this thread though), adding backwakrds compatability was a right move for them too. Perhaps HARDCORE gamers don't want backwards compatability, but the rest of us do. - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I almost wouldn't mind, except that the original X-box is still more expensive than I'd care to pay for one.
- tgilber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Microsoft never promised backward compatibility. In fact, for the majority of the pre-launch lead-up, they were very clear at their developer conferences that backwards compatibility would probably not happen because it require a great deal of emulation.
*And* it's further complicated by the fact that Nvidia has certain licensed IP in the chipset in the Xbox, making it very difficult (legally, technically) for Microsoft to do emulation. That's why some titles take longer to create emulation profiles before, primarily because they were writing directly to the GPU's push buffer instead of going through DirectX. Games that wen through DirectX are far easier to emulate. That's the biggest reason behind Burnout3 not being BC (and because there's some hesitation from some publishers/developers to aid in emulation of their older titles: why devote resources from your next-gen games to make current-gen games work? All you do is further reduce the necessity for gamers to purchase your next-gen games!). - bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4take back your two cents.
you just mentioned the all time king of platform the Gameboy...and what does it have? backwards compatibility. if you are so sure, then a DS without GBA slot would work out great. - rockintom99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4thewebguy: maybe that's true, but remember, xbox games are around half the price of 360 games. Thats one of the big reasons i stick with a ps2, as you can get a ton of awesome titles for 15 bucks...
- nomad111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree... I have Samuri Showdown for my Xbox, and 360 does not support it.. I know its not a big blockbuster game.. but it still sucks it won't play. The option to play games you bought from last console has to be there with any new console. Some games are just classic to replay.
- ACalcutt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it can be stored on flash memory or an external drive hooked up by usb from what i read
- pope7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5..... Go look at the size of ROMS, you asshat. The in-machine space on the Wii is going to be plenty big for NES/SNES games. NES roms are 100s of KBs, SNES are a few Megs, and N64, depending on the music, can be anywhere from 5-50 megs.
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Of course it's nice to have, but I wouldn't say "everyone wants" it; I know a lot of people who've never put one of their PS1 disks into their PS2."
I'm one of those people. I bought my PS2 well after it was launched, and I've never even played a PS1 game. Backwards compatibility isn't an issue for me.
It won't be an issue with the PS3 either. If I want to play a PS2 game, I've already got a PS2.... - Sabin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7WTF, I want my burnout 3 BC and i want it now. Burnout Revenge is great but 3 is much better IMO.
- nomad111, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I can't listen to him any Moore
