- d00ley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+88Excellent!! One more thing to keep children from mastering simple arithmetic.
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+72identity theft
- boomerxl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+71"I'd like to buy Park Avenue please. Here's my VISA!"
"I'm sorry sir, but your card has been declined." - gregoriobl, on 10/12/2007, -6/+60I agree with credit cards in real life, I think that's all we will have in the future, but in Monopoly? Were is the fun of the game?? I love showing of piles of money when playing! And weird arguments in the article about not being able to count or read. If you cant read or write, your to young to play Monopoly ffs!
- kelkitty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42!?!?! How am I supposed to rob the bank now?!
- Recoiler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Nice product placement for Visa. :S
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35If you prefer paper money, you can always print your own:
http://www.hasbro.com/monopoly/pl/page.treasurechest/dn/default.cfm - jacobu9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Visa, it's everywhere you want to be. And some places you don't want it to be.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31You should try it in real life too! Go get all your money out of the bank, and then roll around in it and shove it in the faces of people poorer than you!
- frogpelt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Visa is obviously paying them to do this...
That would be the reason. - bfdhud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20As i read the story, I thought the same thing. I wonder how much of Visa's "monopoly money" it took to convince hasbro to use a Visa Debit card.
I'm sure hasbro did not make that change because they wanted to keep up with the times. - taylorhayward, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27That's cool. Better to teach kids now they will know nothing other than debt in their lifetime.
- slapshot24, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19They are DEBIT cards, not credit. It keeps a running tally of your bank account and does not allow any credit.
Instead of counting colorful cash you just have a card with a cash balance. There is NO CREDIT INVOLVED. - hehe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Believe it or not, Monopoly helped me master arithmetic. I'll miss the paper money. Getting rid of it does not make it better, it just adds a more complex layer to everything (and makes it much easier to cheat).
- aschapm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15wait until they make you use paypal.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19way to dumb this game down habro.
- Etheo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14While I think it's a nice gimmick to add to the game, I must agree it takes away something from the game as well. Part of the fun in Monopoly is people handing their money to you, an d you count your profits by hands. Sure, the cash might be annoying, but are swiping cards really that fun? I mean, whenever someone steps onto your property, you take their card and just swipe, instead of actually counting how much they have to pay.
In simple terms, my pros would be: saves paper, somewhat interesting mechanism;
cons: no math invovled, less skill, less fun. - TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13there will be a new chance card with that version:
"Paypal freezes your account for no apparent reason." - mk32066, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Well at least there won't be as many fights!
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Now how long before someone gets arrested trying to buy actual merchandise with his Monopoly Visa?
- loonquawl42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10As was noted above, it's a debit card. It removes money directly from your bank account as long as you HAVE money in your bank account. It's not a credit card, there is no debt involved.
Having said that, I think it's rather silly. The Monopoly money was just part of the fun for me. A card doesn't feel any more gratifying when your imaginary bank has tons of money. Stacks of pink and blue bills do, though. - apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Just think of the benefits of being the banker now, all the interest!
- 4degrees, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18Damnit not having paper money makes it harder to cheat at monopoly, and cheating is what monopoly is all about! Ive never lost!
trick #1: hope your opponents don't notice that you have landed on their hotel, possibly by providing a distraction. when your turn is over and the next has rolled the dice, the owner cannot collect rent anymore. so feel free to point it out after that, although he/she might start paying more attention... thats bad.
trick #2: when collecting your $200 for passing go, grab two $500s instead. works every time.
trick #3: always pay the 10% but simply miscount your assets...
trick #4: insist on community banking.
and many many more! - AZTriGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Actually, just thought of this too (after the edit timer ran out, dammit) - what's to stop the banker from adding an extra zero when he swipes your card for passing go? Seems there could still be some innovative ways for cheating in this new millenium. $2000 for passing go?
- AZTriGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm right there with you. The paper money helped me learn how to count money when I was a kid, and I have to agree with the comments later on in here of the fun of hiding a couple of $500 bills under the board and whipping them out when everyone else thought you were broke. Good times, good times. I guess you can probably still do the same thing here, you can play without everyone knowing what the balance on your card is, I assume.
Now, how exactly does this work with the "banker", like when you pass go, or win the beauty contest? You give your card to the banker, and he swipes the card to deposit "funds" into your "account"? Does each player have a reader or something so they can see how much they have available to them, or do they have to give the card to the banker every time they want to know? That would kind of suck. - Qenton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yes, but do you get bonus rewards and cash back for purchases?
- rrcasco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This takes some of the fun out of the game. Theres all the things people have said above and...
What about the house rule that everyone has about putting money in the free parking space. Or what about sweetening a property trade with some cash?
I used to love that "they think you're out of money until you pull the hidden $500's from under the board" trick. - rowanjl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Like this isn't just a giant VISA ad? They wouldn't have changed if their wasn't money in it for them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6they might as well get it over with and put an official Hasbo RFID chip at birth. Pre-K monopoly!
- purplegrog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So, I guess when the card or the card reader breaks, you have to buy another? what's the effective life time of one of those things anyway? I predict that in 20 years people who grow up playing this version, assuming they enjoy it, will brag about having a mint condition, working Monopoly Visa card reader. I am happy to see though, that Hasbro makes the money available for printing on their site (see RadiantBeing's post, above). Can we do the same for lost Chance or Community Chest cards?

Seeing family's happy expressions watching a movie and forgetting about the goddamn monopoly game:
PRICELESS. - negativenancy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4But.. but how do can you hide your hidden stash of money under the board?
- broknman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The money does get kinda sloppy, but at the same time it adds so much character to the game.
- jperdomo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The end times are upon us!
- DuoPros, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Have you ever knocked over an open monopoly box?!
Frankly, i think this is a good change. - austinshea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yeah, i think the passing on of math skills to kids was a nice little benefit of playing that game.
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5lol. We used to get in such big fights about people robbing each other and the bank, suck good times!
- CyberSkull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ok, replacing properties is lame. Reealy lame.
- AdamKoRn27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How do can indeed

i didn't see any pr0n on it, but it's a blog, so maybe at one point in time they had something inappropriate - JeremiahLBurns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Look...it's basically all been said. I can't really add much here other than my two cents.
But if I can't have a stack of *****' $500's in front of me...then I don't want to play. - outlanderBZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2its amazing to me how many people still do not know what a "debit" or "check card" in reading all these comments, its not a credit card. maybe it is good kids use this and then they can teach their parents what a "check card" or "debit card" is so they can stop writing their checks in the lines at the stores......
- Federbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Monopoly money is half of the game's fun. I'm going to stick with the version I have now instead of paying for a Visa ad.
- p5ychop3nguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you want a computer to do all the stuff for you just buy the crappy computer game. You don't even have to add the pesky numbers on the dice each roll or manually move your piece each round.
The whole fun of monopoly is that at the end of the game you have a huge stack of money next to a huge stack of property thingies. If everyone has a stupid debit card there's no way to easily see how much you are pwning the other players, there's no way to shove your copious amount of money in their faces, there's no way to hide some money away for the rough times, there's no way to easily grab a few twenties there's no way that you can add your own rules like free parking and the like, you don't lean any math and if the stupid calculator dies you're SOL. - Markie1006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think everyone is forgetting the one of the major positive aspects of playing.
Board games are something you do with your kids. It's not often a group of adults get around the table for a game of Monopoly.
The physical money aspect was helping to improve their basic math skills at the same time (without them even realising it).
I think this is a terrible idea! - Kirsha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3...and proceeds to snap your card in half =D
- AnotherBrian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If I ever find the ***** who is responsible for this I will make deposit of my foot up his ass.
- dustedbunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Every time I play monopoly with my boyfriend and he gets up from the table to use the restroom, etc, I grab as much paper from his side of the board as possible.
How the hell am I going to do that with a freakin debit card? damnit. :( - Hellmark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It will teach them that there is a finite amount of money, however so did having cash, and cash also taught them how to count. If you goto any fast food or retail store, its easy to screw with the average cashier, simply because many have issues counting.
