All you have to do is not buy the game. You can create online petitions, forum signatures and formal letters all you want. It's not like they are killing babies. They simply didn't create a recreational GAME to your standards. Did they drop the ball? Probably but it's like when Kodak ended Kodachrome film. Sure a lot of old school purists shook their fists but at the end of the day, those purists weren't making money for Kodak. You can't run a sucessful business on principal alone.
They are all in existence to make money. It's dirty, and rotten and mean, I know. Maybe it's up to the thousands of disenfranchised to actually do something about it if it really means all that much. Perhaps it just comes down to play another game to play that allows all that. The fact of the matter is (like it or not) PC gaming is a niche market. It's core group of gamers who spend thousands of dollars on just the system (for anything decent anyways) just to play their games. So, why not move on and play another game?
If YOU were trying to make money. What would you do? Would you:
A) Cater to a niche group, who a good fraction of pirate copies of games and create content for these games without you getting a dime. This all while claiming everything should be free anyways.
B) Cater to a popular market. Where the hardware, after 20 years has finally come up to a decent spec where they can make incredible experiences. Where you can charge for new maps, have the hardware company crack down on pirating and modifications AND not deal with incessant whining (on the whole anyways).
It's a symptom of the computer world changing. There are aspects I don't like either. At the end of the day, it's a game you have an option to play. Aren't there more important things to get all up in arms about?
All this talk of a lesser product.... Does the Xbox 360 compare in specs to the higest end gaming rig? ***** no. However, for most video game fans (they became that way by owning stupid ol' a Sega/Nintendo) the ability to come home from work/school and flop on the couch and bust out a few minutes or hours of gaming was incredible. Back in the late 80s early 90s gaming on a PC required actual computer know how and patience. Now years later I can get a mostly equal graphical and playability experience and still play on my couch. I'll admit I gamed using my PC for a while, playing notably Descent and Quake 2 then playing Diablo 1 and 2, Starcraft and Warcraft but still these were to augment my total gaming experience as I owned consoles at the time too. At that time a console couldn't come close to reproducing (to be honest, RTS games, will never feel right to me on a console) these experiences. I feel at the end of the day it comes to ease of use. Unless you're BIG into PC gaming, you just don't want to deal with the hassle and cost. At the end of the day the 'lesser' product still creates an experience most folks prefer over the 'better product' and for good reason. Ease of use.
In general companies want to make money and consumers want things to be easier.
So yes, in this case you have to accept it. - blueduck4ever, on 11/11/2009, -41/+174Just because the console players accept a lesser product doesn't mean we have to. If marginalizing ourselves means standing up for things that have been in PC gaming since the beginning then yeah I guess were going to "further marginalize" ourselves.
- SolidSnak, on 11/12/2009, -8/+85I have no intention of playing online, so I'm torrenting the PC version right now.
- BinkyStuttocks, on 11/12/2009, -6/+74I liked the part when you shot that one guy, and then you shot that OTHER guy! GOTY!
- d3ni4l, on 11/12/2009, -1/+46I just cant stop playing it.
- 3nder99, on 11/12/2009, -7/+50Regal, you do understand that the Call of Duty series has been using community made mods as the basis for their next game right?
Kill streaks, classes, artillery, knives, AC-130, nukes, maps, the list goes on and on. All things stolen directly from the PC modding community.
I wonder what IW will do for MW3 with no PC community to steal maps or mods from.... I guess they could give you features like the ones they hyped up for us PC gamers.
Mouse support
In game Chat
Graphics settings.
I hear in MW3 they might even give PC Keyboard support. WooHoo!!!
Personally, I don't think its the PC community marginalizing itself, i think its IW doing it. - blueduck4ever, on 11/11/2009, -10/+52Regal I understand everything your saying but it was stupid for console gamers to start attacking the mw2 PC cause. Even if they didn't understand what the hoopla was about they still should have been able the grasp the idea that if they are willing to take away a staple in gaming like modding then sooner or later something that affects the console gamers would come to the chopping block.
/ also i don't know why your reply is being dugg down everything you said there is true
// and the single player campaign is great - RegalBegal, on 11/11/2009, -74/+114Gee, the PC gaming community really stuck it to Activision/IW. They COULD have sold 7.1 million instead! Nothing like going to great lengths to further marginalize yourself.
- IrvineKinneas50, on 11/12/2009, -19/+58I loled at this comment. I understand that PC users have a legitimate complaint, but it was hilarious to see how detached from reality the PC players were.
"Nobody's going to buy MW2 now", and "Activision is costing themselves at least 11 million dollars due to this decision" (actual quote off Digg).. - mickstephenson, on 11/12/2009, -5/+40@blueduck perhaps because PC gamers speak about console gamers as if they are stupid, by belittling them and accepting that they are of a lower intelligence as a matter of fact has soured the relationship somewhat.
- MAGZine, on 11/12/2009, -9/+40Good. You know what I saw at the beginning of this comment thread? IW developers/staffers hating on the PC - the '***** platform' that raised them onto the stage that they sit so high today. Its funny when you go around a friend some of the people who work at IW, and then watch them Digg certain comments.
***** 'em. Torrent away. If this is IW treats the PC, then there is no point in actually purchasing the game to support a developer who doesn't care about the PC. ***** $59.99, ***** no dedicated servers, and generally ***** IW for giving the largest '***** you' to the PC gaming community yet. They want to capitalize and screw the group that so religiously played their games to begin with, then I hope the IW studio burns to the ground. It aggravates me to see an original PC developer flee from the PC to make their job easier.
Oh well. Better game development studios will rise to the occasion. Some people can handle pirates and turn them into a legitment source of revenue - IW/Activision took the easy (read: cheap) way out. - inactive, on 11/12/2009, -0/+30If I buy it, does the advert go away?
- guitarh3ro, on 11/12/2009, -3/+32I don't really believe VGChartz is a reputable source. Where do they get their information? How do they know? Maybe if they had some solid evidence to back up their statement other than "early confirmed reports". I would've probably believed it if this were a press release or coming from an official source.
- giz0r, on 11/12/2009, -14/+41I bet Infinity Ward get to sleep well at night, knowing they ***** the entire PC community in ass and got away with it flawlessly
- IrvineKinneas50, on 11/12/2009, -2/+28Until SC2 and Diablo III, at least.
- krispykreams, on 11/12/2009, -6/+31To the console side of this debate:
Considering IW already had the framework for a solid multiplayer component for Modern Warfare on the PC, yes it was a dick move to simply port the xbox360 version. For no reason at all, they took away the essence of what made playing online on the PC great, shortened the single player, and are charging a higher price. You don't except anyone to be upset? Everyone knows that all of this complaining and petitioning probably won't change anything with regards to MW2. After all, it's still a fun game, but we can hope that maybe the next CoD will make better use of the PC's superior online and i/o capabilities. (and yes, they are superior, don't even go there) - MattyC69, on 11/12/2009, -3/+2510 hours in and I've only just started potting around Lothering... I find it an amazing experience. Such immersion and depth. Praise to Bioware for actually making an amazing PC game and sticking to their guns.
What I find hilarious though is that IGN gives it 9.0 and the whole review is basically praise, then they review MW2 and give it 9.5 and just go on about the multiplayer... AND they tune the single player is too short and list other flaws. But 9.5?! Yeah I think IGN, like most 'review' websites was just bought off.
I mean, is MW2 just a multiplayer game? Is that all it's been reduced to? Multiplayer COD4 became so popular BECAUSE of the single player intially, now they say even single player is convoluted. - 64705, on 11/12/2009, -4/+25But you could argue that people such as BadAndy would have bought the PC version (instead of torrenting) if it were not for IW crippling the multiplayer experience. The omission of key features which PC gamers have come to expect are clearly missing so why buy it?
- MAGZine, on 11/12/2009, -10/+29I'll repost (sorry for those who don't like it so much). This is in reply to someone saying that they're torrenting MW2 right now, thanks to IW giving a giant FU to the PC gaming community.
"Good. You know what I saw at the beginning of this comment thread? IW developers/staffers hating on the PC - the '***** platform' that raised them onto the stage that they sit so high today. Its funny when you go around and friend some of the people who work at IW, and then watch them Digg certain comments over the others. Really puts things into perspective for you.

I didn't buy MW2, and I won't buy MW2. I don't care if it doesn't make a difference or if IW leaves the PC completely. I vote with my dollars, and if IW doesn't want them, then they can piss off to the Console and stay there, and I'll remember the franchise for what it WAS, and not for what it has BECOME. (the FIFA of FPSes, IMO - new one every year, different look, same mechanics) - mbst2000, on 11/12/2009, -1/+20I imagine, given the sales, that they are sleeping on a big pile of money with many beautiful ladies
- cquilliam, on 11/12/2009, -0/+19SPOILER ALERT!!
- MAXAMOUS, on 11/12/2009, -3/+21All you MW2 fan bois who don't care bout the PC community:
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3176882
Already out. DAYS after release.
Don't worry you just get an admin.
Oh wait...... - 3nder99, on 11/12/2009, -4/+21From the current sales figures. PC sales for COD4 amounted to almost 20% of the game. In MW2 PC sales are about 5%.
I'm sure they will make that up with new console gamers, but they did just lose millions of dollars. Then again considering they had planned to release the game without telling us about IWNet and the lack of servers or mods, they probably figured they would have made most of the money anyways.
Thankfully for us, an obscure webcast of a ventrilo interview had someone smart enough to directly ask if there were dedicated servers. 402 hesitated obviously, before trying to sell the new system. They never really put out any type of official press release about this "amazing" new system. - Thud, on 11/12/2009, -2/+17"You haven't a ***** clue what was there in the beginning in multiplayer FPS. There weren't dedicated servers - everything was done over direct PC to PC connection via Serial or a LAN. There also wasn't a console either, nor lean or any of the ***** you're whining about."
I know what you mean. I started off playing FPS back when men were men, network cabling was exotic and scarce, and we had to hook 2 machines up via a parallel port cable running PIPX (IPX over parallel port) in order to play Doom 2-player. And in order to load all those drivers we had to tweak config.sys and autoexec.bat to extract every last bit of upper memory we could get our hands on.
And we LIKED IT. - OasisR123, on 11/12/2009, -0/+15so, can I wait a couple of weeks an get the cheaper platinum version instead? =P
- kimbja98, on 11/12/2009, -0/+15It's a shame but probably true. Despite convenient, legal alternatives such as Steam or Direct2Drive, piracy is still quite high for games. Is DRM the only answer (like consoles)?
I recently re-installed GTA4 to see if it ran better as a result of overclocking. The game installed ok, but securom's activation servers were being so unreliable (couldn't connect) I had to manually activate/unlock it online and download the unlocker tool (from their own website). I only wanted to play around sand-box style but I didn't have my saved games anymore.
Never mind, I'll get one online, except that windows live hashes the save files so you can't just import them. So you have to remove the live feature with a dll hack but somehow I couldn't get this to work either and I didn't want to play through from scratch.
Eventually I gave up and uninstalled the game, except I had to de-activate the install and that took about half an hour of being unable to connect to the activation servers so I had to try it the manual way. I didn't want to finish the uninstall until I had confirmed my licence had been revoked/deactivated (otherwise come to install it again some other time, I'd be unable to activate it and I'd have lost $50 of game!).
Is that the future of DRM? Steam is how DRM should be done. Transparent, convenient and offers the user something he wouldn't have with offline media (online backup, ability to download all your games anywhere, any time to any machine). GTA4's DRM is just terrible. I've never had to jump through so many hoops! - EliteBeat, on 11/12/2009, -7/+22Truth be told If the xbox 360 gave me a mouse/keyboard to play my fps with I would rather game on it. Cheaper then maintaining a gaming PC.
- consig1iere, on 11/12/2009, -9/+23This proves how stupid average consumers are and will buy raw steamy tard if advertised well. Idiots. Heck no wonder why Miley Cyrus and Jonas Bros still exist.
- 3nder99, on 11/12/2009, -0/+13They are probably counting the total copies made as sold.
- ShingoEX, on 11/12/2009, -7/+19You do realize that the rampant levels of piracy on PC completely dwarf the levels of piracy on the 360, right?
At one point, there were 3 times as many COD4 games being played online than copies sold. - LostOverThere, on 11/12/2009, -4/+16Is this even accurate? I mean, VGChartz is known for it's less then accurate statistics.
- paulsmith288, on 11/12/2009, -7/+18i wont buy it because of the adverts
- sock2828, on 11/12/2009, -5/+16Well they likely lost a significant portion of sales on the PC side of things. I was personally going to buy it for my PC until they announced that dedicated servers would be gone.
But anybody who thinks that would equal eleven million dollars of lost
revenue is a moron.
I plan on buying it for my Xbox sometime soon though, I would prefer to play it on my PC. But I fear with hacking being so much easier on the PC than the Xbox and with no way to kick hackers on the PC version, that it will quickly become unplayable or nearly unplayable. - braineater2448, on 11/11/2009, -3/+14Is this the biggest first day for a video game?
- numberneal, on 11/12/2009, -3/+14it went platinum 7 times
- frepnog, on 11/12/2009, -1/+12"AMD/ATI and nVidia might as well just shut up shop"
don't be a retard. the graphics chip in the Xbox was provided by ATI and the chip in the PS3 was provided by Nvidia. Those companies are doing fine. - MattyC69, on 11/12/2009, -10/+21dude... enjoy your 6-hour single player campaign. its so short, its laughable. Go get Dragon Age instead. 70+ hours with massive replay value. AND the PC version is the best. In fact, the xbox and ps3 versions are "pc-ports" lol!
- Navicerts, on 11/12/2009, -5/+15People pirate console games as well... It just so happens that on average people who use a PC to play games have the general know how necessary to download and use a pirate copy (many console people don't have a clue). Force all these people onto consoles and they aren't going to stop pirating.
The fear of pirates in the game the industry is what actually killed it, not the pirates themselves. Anyhow it's not dead yet, one franchise will move off PC... - HeavyWave, on 11/12/2009, -4/+14Does Kevin pay for comments too now? There is too ***** much Dragon Age on Digg.
- Dragonis, on 11/12/2009, -1/+11just because something is old doesn't mean it's irrelevent
- jaytek13, on 11/12/2009, -1/+11Yes but you have to mod the 360 in order to play pirated games and the vast majority of people aren't going to mod them, not only because modding often runs the risk of breaking it entirely, but there are often repercussions, such as those who have been banned from xboxlive now:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-122 ...
Whereas on the other hand there are no repercussions or modding involved in pirating a PC game. It's typically a simple matter of just downloading it and getting a cracked code from the torrent notes. No effort involved here, and no risk of lasting repercussions. - Azuvector, on 11/12/2009, -0/+10I kinda wonder tbh, given how every game seems to be "the best-selling game of all-time".
- Zipko, on 11/12/2009, -1/+11Kid Rock sucks
- slaystench, on 11/12/2009, -2/+12Most of you console players don't realize how much IW "borrowed" from the PC mod community to make their games better. Now they're ***** us in the ass. We're not going to go back to the days of no dedicated servers, this is 2009, not the 90s.
- daviz0, on 11/12/2009, -2/+11he is not delusional, I was gonna buy it before the dedicated servers and mod announcement but instead I torrented it and bought left 4 dead 2 for it far superior multiplayer, and I'm sure I'm not the only either, just think about the amount of people who decided to get l4d2 or dragon age instead
- PlasticHotDog, on 11/12/2009, -17/+26The video game market is so depressing because so few customers seem to have a standard for a quality product. I'm not even sure if there's a single game studio left that is willing to put forth complete effort in every aspect of their game (now that IW cut so many features from the PC version, and Blizzard will be cutting LAN from it's own future games).
- nuketrap, on 11/12/2009, -2/+11Good to hear a good game sold well, I played the Single player campaign on my friend's PS3, it was quite enjoyable. However, is someone able to tell me how hard it would be for IW to put the code in for dedicated servers and access to the console, I am curious to know how much time they'd have to invest for an extra maybe 200,000 PC users; would it be profitable if they were to do it time vs. profit made?
- Madcow17, on 11/12/2009, -7/+16vtnerd -
That is SUCH a pointless argument. kb/m users and controller users don't play together so referring to competitions where anything like that happened is irrelevant. Its allll about opinion and preference. I put 10+ years into PC gaming.. quakes, half lives (along with hundreds of, usually incredibly *****, mods) battlefields, dooms, medal of honors, CoDs.. and i'm sure i'm missing some. But today? I'll take a controller.
i've been playing my FPS on xbox now for almost 2 years. It doesn't matter what facts you spit out. You can go on for days about the graphical advantages of a PC, or the precision you can get from a kb/m. i just. don't. care. I got tired of rampant cheaters, PC upgrades over the years, and retarded server hosts who kick you if you kill them. I've had a very peaceful 2 years on my Xbox now. I havent come across even 1 person who i remotely considered cheating. I take comfort in knowing that everyones system has the same specs. I like the quick, casual feel of it.
If you aren't happy with this, well i'm sorry but PC users, the world does not revolve around you. What they did to the PC version really sucks. I come to these comments to defend pc users and agree, but often find myself switching sides just because the idiocy of you PC elitists makes me sick.
So yep, i went out and bought it lastnight. IW now has my 60 bucks and in return, i have a very fun game to play. I played it lastnight like there was no tomorrow (today?) and it's freaking great. I'm pissed that they disabled party chat in most modes but whatever, i'll get on ventrilo if i want to talk to my friend. IMO this game is worth every penny for the console. My only regret now is that i didn't call in to work sick today. If this pisses you PC users off.. well, tough. The damage is done, the game is out and sales records were still shattered. it's time to heal and move on. -

What is Digg?
