- Edrick, on 10/12/2007, -9/+112Ladies and Gentleman, I give you Sony's target demographic!
- guitarh3ro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+56In all honesty, if Nintendo can pull something amazing off and yet keeps the friend codes, it wouldn't bother me to much. It would bother me, however, if whatever they do next sucks horribly and they still haven't fixed the friend code problem. I mean, don't get me wrong, I would love to get rid of friend codes, but they really aren't as big a nuisance to me right now as some of the other online areas Nintendo is lacking in.
- Rustymonk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+49Ahhh... stop teasing!
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -9/+55Shiggy
I await your obituary in the paper. - freetyme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48It probably won't happen but as long as there's ONE unified system so I only have to enter my friends code once, and it would use the Wii's address book so instead of 5854-2309-3290-1543 I will see "Steve" I'll be find. The only way I think individual friend codes would be reasonable. is with Games that use DS connectivity like Pokemon Battle Revolution as of course the DS would have its own code.
I just know Battalion Wars 2 and Brawl online better rock. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+49What would be really nice for FPS players is if they increased the refresh rate of the controller pointer, and got rid of the lag
- FrankHowley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+45I'd love for them to drop their stupid friend code deal, and just make the friends portion a whole lot easier.
- ts8lemonade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36Not interested in network gaming? Whatever would make us think they weren't interested?
- TedwardRoberts, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35interesting. Because I found that the Wii brought most of the simple fun back to gaming. Graphics are great, but at the end of the day, I'd rather have something that is just fun to play, like the original Super Mario series was. I must say, for most of the games I've played, the controls are really amazingly intuitive.
Which brings me to another point... not all "hardcore" gamers are cave-dwelling nerds, and some of us have friends, family, and *gasp* girlfriends that we would like to play games with, and the Wii is an absolutely perfect transition into this. Before this, the only thing I could get anybody that wasn't a geek to play around the house was DDR, and that's because THAT was also intuitive.
So while my 360 and my PS3 are waiting for some games that really show me what "next-gen" is all about, I'm going to take a step back, and actually have some real, genuine, simple fun. - PATSCRU, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29a japanese steve jobs? how insulting....
miyamoto is THE willy wonka of the asian pacific. - Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22So basically he's saying he was expecting (fearing?) the Wii to do worse in America, and hinting their still quite non-existant online service might be worth the wait. It better be if it takes them this long to get it running, but I have faith in Nintendo. They seem to have been doing pretty much everything right recently.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27Boy, Miyamoto sure reminds me of an asian Steve Jobs...
- Casedot, on 10/12/2007, -12/+30If I hear/see anyone refer to him as "Shiggy" again I am going to kill myself.
- Magnj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19If they would just give us online play without friend codes they would be in major freaking business
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18So does Wii connect to a DS yet?
- LanceWindu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18http://www.gamepro.com/nintendo/wii/games/features/107845.shtml
The actual information comes from a GamePro interview...RTFA - theratdotus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Duh, its the wii controller helmet holder.
- IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22Don't feed the troll
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17i want wii online like xbox live, can they give me that? and some multiplayer FPS!! I was shocked that call of duty 3 wasn't multiplayer, redsteel isnt that great either. *hopes they get serious about some fps soon*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Emo,
From 5/11/2006...
"Will the game take advantage of WiFi connection? Will it be online?
Sakurai: My plan is to include WiFi and online functionality. Actually one of the reasons it was created was that the staff said that when the console went online, the first game should be SSB. I'm going to try very hard to do that. But, I think it may be a lot of work to come up with a system with 4 players simultaneously and figuring out who's first, but we may look at other ways of bringing 4 people together." - Feign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13After finally getting a Wii I am wishing that there was far more selection available, with all the control and channel and online potential I wish the big N would stop the waiting and watching and get to the content. I just hope they arent holding off to drop an improved Wii-lite or something in the next little while.
- wideawakewesley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Well the original interview appears to have been taken totally out of context unfortunately:
"One other thing that I think is going to be the next big challenge for Nintendo is related to the idea of network entertainment. A lot of people have the misunderstanding that Nintendo is not interested in network gaming. What we are interested in isn't so much the idea of creating a game that is online and networked in a way that we have seen online up until now. We are really more interested in this idea of having the household television connected to the Internet constantly via the Wii. I think you are going to see a lot of new possibilities for new types of entertainment, such as new channels for the Wii in that type of network environment."
This doesn't seem to indicate any great new online gaming features akin to XBOX Live unfortunately. As a Wii owner that's quite disappointing. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Because when I think of Nintendo, I think "Quality First Person Shooters"
It's more of an exception (Goldeneye) than a rule. - PATSCRU, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13don't disappoint me shiggy,... i want online and i want it now....this isn't 1996
- MiltonWaddams, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11If they really do online right for the Wii, I'll get one. Xbox Live turned me into a game junkie again. My PS2 collected dust for a good year+ before I picked up an Xbox. I love being able to play live people at any time. Having friends over to play is great but not always feasible. Not being able to play Smash Bros. online would seem almost pointless to me. Once online is really rocking on the Wii I'm in.
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I would like to see 720p support for some applications, such as the internet/news channels. Games can stay at 480p.
- dv8withn8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You might wanna learn how to protect your privacy online then.
Step 1: Stop signing up for those porn newsletters. - Misanthrope, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13I have gotten some from no less than 3 different girls AFTER letting them play wii sports bowling. Maybe I'm just really good looking, or maybe girls actually like it when they see a guy up off his ass...who knows?
I may be a sad loser...but at least I'm getting laid. So I'm not that sad at all...and I'm not a loser...but I sure like my Wii! - Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Are you kidding? Including HD support would've been a terrible idea. Sure, let's increase the cost or cost of our console by some 100€+, make it way bigger etc, just to support a feature around 10% of the population actually has the TVs for. I mean a Wii that is exactly the same as it is now for the same price and HD? Sure! Any other way? Hell no!
I don't even have a HDTV (big surprise there I'm sure), and supporting HD would mean lots of games being potentially unplayable or crap-looking in SD (Dead Rising, Gears of War, many other). - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@ts8lemonade:
Probably the fact that it's been out for nearly 6 months and there's still no network play. - Projektorboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Come on Nintendo, a Pokemon MMO! Do they even know the raging amounts of cash that gamers would throw at Nintendo for this? I'd LOVE to be able to go into a fully 3D Kanto/Johto as their own custom trainer and battle head-to-head or capture legendaries!
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"A lot of people have the misunderstanding that Nintendo is not interested in network gaming."
Well gee, how we have ever gotten the idea that Nintendo is not interested in network gaming? I mean...
1. Only two online games made it to the GC, even the Dreamcast had more than that.
2. The DS has a terribly gimped and plain annoying/frustrating online system, of which many people did and still do complain about.
3. Online play practically becoming a standard in this day and age.
4. Wii looking to still have a type of friend code system, and so far there is not a single online game out for it. Not to mention the rumers of Nintendo denying to give developers information about their online APIs yet.
5. VC games not having any type of online multiplayer aspect.
How could we POSSIBLY have come up with the idea that Nintendo is not interested in online? - rocman9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm gonna keep praying for a good online multiplayer service for the Wii, but if you read the rest of his comments, you'll know now to get your hopes up just yet:
"What we are interested in isn't so much the idea of creating a game that is online and networked in a way that we have seen online up until now. That was my bad, was watching Arrested Development when I was reading.
That being said, I'll still be really psyched once they make a formal announcement, not necessarily before with innuendo. - freehunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5AFAIK, the Wii remote has no microphone. If it does, I have not seen it in my months of playing it.
- Odjn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"A lot of people have the misunderstanding that Nintendo is not interested in network gaming."
Huh? Your first US game that has the first online versus for the Wii is 95% useless without the DS game and its turn based (i.e. the easiest game in the whole genre of games to put online).
You have friend codes that plain suck.
No misunderstanding about how not interested you are in network gaming. - directive0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Excite trucks controls are awful? Wiimote for fps is a bad idea? Wow... I really can't agree with you there. Sure the FPS's on the wii are pretty lack luster compared to conventional next gen consoles, but you couldn't PAY me to go back to dual analog sticks. The wiimote is the closest thing to a mouse and WASD I can get sitting on the couch.
- enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5*rolleyes*
- Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Exactly, what is the misunderstanding in....
xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx
There is no misunderstand, it's insulting that he would even insinuate that people don't understand their message. - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5major tease, indeed.
Being a fan, my way of not being disappointed all the time is to be super-negative about comments like these... but really.. there's nothing to say about this one. One thing's for sure, many hungry video game players are waiting, the competition is moving fast, so they better dish out the goods soon or else people won't misunderstand, they'll just stop caring...
I guess the whole "channel" concept could lead to believe that the system isn't connected... but with WiiConnect24, I'm SURE they've planned that for something more than just receing text messages. Come on now, we're talking about Nintendo here. Software has never been a problem. - achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The excerpts make this a little misleading. In the full interview, the comments about pleasing hardcore gamers and going online happen on separate pages. He continues on about what he sees in store for Wii online:
[q]
What we are interested in isn't so much the idea of creating a game that is online and networked in a way that we have seen online up until now. We are really more interested in this idea of having the household television connected to the Internet constantly via the Wii. I think you are going to see a lot of new possibilities for new types of entertainment, such as new channels for the Wii in that type of network environment.
[/q] - theratdotus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i THINK the hardcore FPS combination comes from the fact that fps are usually cutting edge technology pushing you to upgrade your hardware just to play it. People who research, spend 700$ or so and rebuild their computers just to play ONE game is kinda hardcore...
- avik42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I played XBOX Live. But it got boring pretty fast for me. I don't find it appealing to hear 13 year olds screams obscenities during GoW etc, neither do I find 30 year olds acting like total asshats during the said period. What I liked about XBOX Live is the online FPS. But it's only a FPS. The rinse and repeat gets boring pretty fast for me.
I am confused about one thing though: since when did playing FPS makes you a hardcore gamer? I just get this distinct feeling that if you don't like/play FPS and trash talk like a baffoon, you are somehow not L33t enough to be hardcore gamer... Is this mindset of L33t people who can't afford to drop $1500 for dual SLI Nvidia cards? Or build your own rig that cost upwards for $3000 to play video games?? Are you guys that desperate to feel "special"? Digital viagra of fragging some 9 year old with your elite battle tactic in a 8x8 square. Wow, you are amazing. I concede to your digital superiority...
Well, you can have it.. I am very happy with my Wii. I love playing it with my family. I wish there will be more games out soon. The shortage is slightly annoying at times, but it's a new system and I am more than willing to be patient. I hope there is some sort of online gaming involved in Wii eventually. But please, stop this, omg!!! wii has no xbox live *****... I suggest getting some real life friends (even a girl friend if that's within your means). Wii is fantastic when playing with someone standing right beside you.
Just 2c from someone who has been what you will define as a "hardcore gamer" long before hardcore gamer was the l33t thing to be.
P.S. I still dislike most FPS for lack of imagination and game play. - xenonflash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=13325
X-Fire. Nuff said. - grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In the end friend codes might be problematic, but the number one problem right now is much simpler: Total lack of online enabled games. I don't really care if I can't play Wii Sports with friend codes or if I can't play it without, the problem simply is that I can't play it online at all. It would of course also be much easier to judge the friend code problematic if one could actually test it.
- wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you know, alot of people seem to be missing something in this "online gaming" failure from Nintendo.
Online Gaming is hard to do. There is TCP/IP code. Latency issues. Server-side backend issues. Security.
All these things arent necessarily natural extensions. And, Nintendo has very very little experience in this arena. Its not just "plug into internet and select 2P".
Nintendo is good at programming for a fixed target, but its more (from my perspective) like embedded controller programming.
Nintendo's failure to bring online up to today's standards is just that... a continued, demonstrated failure.
All the "praying" and "hoping" nintendo gets its act together online is just that: hope. Im not saying its impossible for them to pull it off, Im saying simply that their competitors are far more inclined to succeed and excel in this arena. As is being demonstrated.
The short: If you want great online experience, why the frack would you pick Wii and "hope" it gets better? They have a long long way to go, and not much indicating they will pull it off. - Raidendesu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Lets hope the light at the end of the tunnel doesn't come too late.
- Hoffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll believe it when I see it. Friend codes blow on the DS and I expect they will do the same on the Wii. Online gaming isn't the be all end all of console gaming, but if they are going to do it, do it right.
Super Paper Mario in 7 days is all I need. :) - psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Seriously. The word "hardcore" gets tossed around way too often in the gaming world. It seems anyone who owns a console and buys more than 2 games for it calls himself "hardcore."
The term has lost all meaning. Or maybe it's simply being redefined to mean "prepubescent fool or lonely, cave-dwelling geek who screams obscenities on Xbox Live and goes on the internet writing 'my console RULZ, urz, SUX! LOLZZZ!!!111!!!111'" - wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5The wii is 6 months old and online usernames are "0005819201920903"? *ANY* other console would be SAVAGED as still-born or pre-born...
How can this poor implementation not be a laughing stock? -
