Miyamoto: Wii Could Remake Gamecube Games
wii.ign.com — Speaking to Nintendo Dream magazine, Shigeru Miyamoto described Twilight Princess' transition from 'Cube to Wii as "an interesting experiment". It seems that following the success of Twilight Princess's bi-polar development, the Nintendo luminary is keen to remake existing GameCube titles, adding full Wiimote support.

- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+63Half of the Wii's appeal is full backwards compatability from all Nintendo (and some Sega) consoles. People have been asking for some graphical updates for older games, and maybe even some wiimote features, through the VC. So why not give what some of the fans want? Those that don't want it can just go buy the GC version and play it on the Wii.
Sure beats masturbating over a tech-demo remake of a cutscence from Final Fantasy VII. - defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -12/+19NeoTechni, when are you going to realized that your comments are never welcomed here!?

The same time you do apparently. Jackass. - Tahiri, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10My god defect, you're a bigger ass than Tenchi.
Get off digg, we don't want "people" like you here.
I've seen you harassing people before, you disgust me - Tahiri, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Half of the Wii's appeal is full backwards compatability from all Nintendo (and some Sega) consoles. I think people would rather Wii play their old games, and use the new control scheme, for free rather than repurchasing their games. So I appologize to Tenchi for calling him an ass, as it seems defect is the only ass here.

- Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -61/+19Whew. For a second there, I thought only third party developers were going to shoehorn Wiimote support into games that weren't designed for it. Good to see Nintendo is getting into the act too.

- Ashkc88, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5That is a very ignorant point. "only third party developers were going to shoehorn Wiimote support into games" Only third party games? Um, wouldn't first party games use the technology? since its umm, their technology? And third parties are making exclusives for the Wii. I know its all sarcasm, but its sarcasm as an excuse to flame nintendo.

- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I think this sounds pretty interesting. Some games might really benefit from the Wiimote.
Also, the Wii is probably selling an order of magnitude or so more than the Gamecube did, so a lot of people who buy the Wii would be missing out on a bunch of excellent games. I just hope they really improve the games in addition to making them prettier, and sell them at an affordable price. - JDoggqx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34Oh man! Give me Resident Evil 4 with Wii controls and I may never leave the couch again.

- rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1"Detras de ti idiota!"
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22I'd be for this with certain games as long as there was a real upgrade and the price wasn't outrageous. Pikmin could be very interesting with the Wii-mote.
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17"as long as there was a real upgrade"
Exactly. If I wanted to play the same damn games over and over (with shinier graphics), I'd get a PS3 or an Xbox (Call of Duty, Madden, another f'ing Need for Speed). But the Wiimote could really change the dynamics of some GC games. - terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9How about selling a $5 patch via Virtual Console for existing Gamecube discs? Add Wiimote controls, some extra content (minigames?), online support...?
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17"as long as there was a real upgrade"
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Now what could be even MORE interesting, is if Nintendo and other publishers put new Wii-ified versions of Gamecube games as bonus material on the sequel disks...
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Now THAT would be fantastic to see!
However I think that if they can sell it standalone for $20 they would do this rather than giving it away. Similarly, I think we'll see too high of prices for re-released NES/SNES titles on Virtual Console. Why on earth would I pay even $4 to play Yoshi's Island when I have the ROM and a perfectly fine emulator on my PC right now?
cambrown99 has got me onto another idea though - maybe when you buy certain Wii games you can get free downloads of some of the older classics in the series!
Such as: Buy Super Mario Galaxy for your Wii and get a coupon/code to download Super Mario Brothers 1-3 for NES on your Virtual Console. Maybe give you Zelda 1 & 2 with Twilight Princess. Ohhh a boy can dream can't he? - chromium, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2@ZeroMP
"Why on earth would I pay even $4 to play Yoshi's Island when I have the ROM and a perfectly fine emulator on my PC right now?"
You could say the same thing about current console games. "Why would I pay $50 for a PS2/Xbox/GC/PSP/DS game when I have the ISO/ROM and can play it perfectly fine on my modded system?" - perrupa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Why on earth would I pay even $4 to play Yoshi's Island when I have the ROM and a perfectly fine emulator on my PC right now?"
Because for a measly $4 it'd be both legal and more convenient. If I'm playing video games in my living room and want to play yoshi's island then I'd just jump to the menu and load it up. Then it could be played with the wiimote instead of on a keyboard or a ***** PC gamepad.
And it's not like this is the first time any video game company has released the same game with little to no upgrades. Anyone remember fighting games like street fighter? - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Please note that I used Yoshi's Island as an example because it was the last ROM I loaded up. I've got hundreds of these SNES ROMS, and nearly ever NES game ever released (and many not released in the US, a thousand of them..) Sure Yoshi's Island is a measly $4 - but lets take a modest 100 of these games. There is no way I'll pay $400 to be able to play these on my couch, rather than walking into the next room.
Excitebike for example - this ROM is what - 4Kb ? An amazingly fun game in such a small package, but to charge even $2.00 for it - seems like I'll be nickel and dimed to death much like the Xbox 360 microtransaction debacle. I would love to see the big N give away 1st party, NES roms via Virtual Console - or at least packaged with the new versions of the same titles - go ahead and charge for N64 games and such.
I want 4Kb of Excitebike for free on Virtual Console when I spend $49.95 on Excite Truck.
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Now THAT would be fantastic to see!
- beefwellington, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Pikmin 1 & 2 package anyone?
- Dainjah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I like it. I would love to play a remake of Eternal Darkness with wii-mote support. It would be nice if they added some content though.
- 42nnn, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5Ive said it before and i will say it again, I freakin love nintendo!
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Consume! Consume! Consume!
You sad, corporation-loving sheep...
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Consume! Consume! Consume!
- contradictator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Why Gamecube games? Why not remake some old N64 games with enhanced graphics and Wiimote support? It'd make them a lot more appealing to buy off the Virtual Console.
And why stop there? There's many games out there that people would love to go back and play with a fresh new control system and spanky updated graphics! It's all possible with the flux capaci--- I mean Wii!!- itanshi, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2all i want is a PC version of mario kart 64 so i can make my own maps and play online
- golhra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It would be incredible if instead of download or paying for discs, you could download the "modified controls" or whatever to your WII itself and that enables different controls on the cube games you already own.
- briankoenig03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That'd be nice, but I have a feeling that most games use a "if(getButtonState("A").pressed())" type code for different actions like jumping or swinging your sword, which would be hard to replace with just a quick software patch. You could probably easily change it to "if wiimote moves on x axis swing sword" type thing, but that's not nearly using the wiimote to its capabilities, and would probably get tiring fast.
- apu95, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think this is an interesting idea, but I also think that a patch system would work better. Kinda like a loader...the Wii would detect the game and go on the WiiConnect24 system to check if there's a patch/loader and resources. This file would be a sort of replacement for the "exe" file in the actual GC disc. It would be mapped to use the Wiimote's functions and if necessary, use the newly downloaded resources to replace the ones in the game (by resources, I mean button icons, so instead of showing the GC buttons, like in Zelda: WW, it would show the Wiimote buttons instead).
Of course they could charge for this, say $1 to get the patch. This would be saved on your WiiConnect24 profile, so if you run out of space on your Wii, you could always erase the files you downloaded and re-download at no cost afterwards since it's registered in your profile that you paid for it already.
Just a thought.... - reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Pikmin and RE4 would be great contenders, but why not just go ahead and spend money and time on making new Pikmin and RE games?
I don't think it's a bad idea, but when Metroid Prime 3 is on the market I don't really I think I want to play Metroid Prime 1 and 2 again just with the new controls. It could persuade people who have not played these games on the GC to finally buy em, but then again they could just buy the GC versions.- ArekRashan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Time and money spent on developing a control set for the existing Pikmin games would instantly double as R&D for the control interface of a possible Pikmin sequel, quite possibly sparking new gameplay ideas as the developers see how motion controls work with the existing game design.
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11instead of remaking games to support the wiimote...
how about remaking games for online support?
Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, WWF No Mercy anyone?
Online support of the old games is a big selling point for me more so than making it so that I can mario 64 with the wiimote...- Ashkc88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I agree (although playing goldeneye using the Wiimote to aim would be bad-ass) I would rather see the other games such as Mario Kart 64 go online than use the Wiimote with them. Hopefully they can do both?!
- Smwbigboss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Super Smash Bros Melee
That would be... damn, some people will stop showing up for work.
- miketuck3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As long as they keep the updates free you shouldnt have to buy a game again just becuse they rework the controls
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Great. So instead of just getting new versions of old games, we're also going to get rehashes of old games. I like Nintendo and all, and Miyamoto is a game industry god and everything, but I don't see this as positive news. Just create new games and let the GameCube games be what they are.
- NiGHTSChao, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4"So we can milk even more money from you :3" - Nintendo
- Ashkc88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Isn't that the point of business?
- KyleMistry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Because Sony and Microsoft are surely using prices that allow customers to save every penny.
- NiGHTSChao, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4yes but Nintendo has a habbit of milking their products more then other companies
- Ashkc88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Who are you to tell Nintendo how to run their business? Nintendo makes profit by people buying their products, If they can make more money off of old games, so what? If people dont wanna buy the game again, THEN DON'T BUY THE GAME! Nintendo isn't forcing people to rebuy the game. Your ignorance is bliss.
- NiGHTSChao, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Im sorry, didnt you take in mind the mindless fanwanks that buy nintendo products just because they say "nintendo" on them?
:|
- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't know, I wasn't too impressed with many Gamecube games. If they reissued the first two Metroids I may end up picking those up, I only went through part of the first one. It all depends on whether I like the feel to it or not.
- WDot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What I think would be cool is if they issued a sort of "patch" for some games to take into account the people who already own the game. If I already own Pikmin and they release a Wii-fied Pikmin, why should I buy the data again? Can't I just get a new executable that can go on my memory card and then spin the Pikmin Gamecube disc for everything else?
- cago, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It looks like Nintendo wants to reinvent the NES all over again (or maybe this time people are actually tired of controllers and now are ready for the Power-Glove and U-Force!)
- MrScreenName, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That's a great Idea, Let's not concentrate on making great new games that were born to play on the Wii-Mote,instead lets port games that were designed around another controller. I think Nintendo and everyone else making games for the Wii, must concentrate on new experiences on that machine, Personally I am getting one based on the fact that it is going to have totally original content, that controls in a new way, my curiosity has sold the system don't ruin it, F-ZERO GX is a great game, do I want to play it with a Wii-Mote? No. that is ridiculous. There is going to be more than Enough Nostalgia going on that system, let's just leave it at that.
PS: REZ on Wii Please.- WeeklyGeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They never said they were turning their attention away from other games in order to do this.
- McMultiverse, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6***** this noise. No way am I buying the same game twice. Miyamoto-san, get off your ass and make some new games.
- ghettoiam, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3NeoTechni:
I think it's ridiculously immature of Digg readers to mod you down for your post. "Some revolution..." is a valid sentiment, and in this case -completely- accurate as well. And that's not to speak badly of Wii as a whole, but the idea of re-releasing GameCube games for the Wii isn't exactly ah "woohoo" moment (outside of the delicious potential of RE4).- Ashkc88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6And if you were smart enough to use the reply feature of digg I would believe you. "Some revolution..." was a smart ass remark, thats why it was dugg down. Just because you and NeoTechni arent excited about being able to use the Wiimote with Gamecube games, doesn't mean everyone else isn't excited too.
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2""Some revolution..." was a smart ass remark,"
I was commenting on how it's same gameplay, with no improvements to AI/physics, but different controls. But everydigger and his mom calls PS3/360 games, which have huge advances in gameplay (AI and physics are part of gameplay) the same games as we've gotten for years.
A revolution is not the same games with a different controller. As anyone can make a different controller for use with current games. I myself own the Resident Evil PS2 chainsaw with a tilt sensor, the Onimusha sword (also with tilt) Ace combat flight stick/steel battalion controller/virtual on twin sticks, guncon with redoctane footpedal.
New controls are not so much a revolution, but a novelty that wears off.
- Spaz007, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Nintendo remaking games SHOCKER!!!!
- GT35R, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Not another word out of you Wii Fanboys about PS3 making sequels to previous game likes MGS4! All you guys are getting is rehashed GameCube games. Enjoy you "revolution".
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1if only there were some good gamecube games to remake. even tho i got my cube for free i feel its kinda wasteful. there just arent many good games for it, sure theres the classic standbys mariokart, zelda, metroid, but thats really about it. =(
- primecut17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Let's get this straight.. so the kid goes to the store and sees the Wii displayed with Zelda:Twilight Princess. The kid thinks:
a) That the demo is for GameCube, since the same exact game is being released for it.
b) Knows that the demo is for the Wii, but realizes that the same exact game can be purchased for the GameCube WITHOUT having to buy the Wii.
c) Sees a PS3 game displayed in giant HD glory and decides to jump ship. J/K fanboys.
How are simultaneous GC releases and GC rehash titles good for Wii sales? I don't know. How does that inspire people to get a new system? It doesn't. "Oh, let me drop 2 bills on a new controller so I can re-buy the same games again! woo hoo!" Apparently it works for fanboys, because all the fanboys love to re-buy the same Nintendo stuff over and over again without complaint.- sKiLLa182, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, they're releasing it for both systems because Nintendo promised it would be out for the GameCube. It is a GameCube game, it just has enhanced controls for the Wii version. By releasing it for GameCube they're keeping their promise, something Sony hasn't been able to do lately.
It's also a good way of showing people how controls really make a difference on a game like Zelda. You're going to see the exact same game on each console. Same graphics, physics, AI, etc. So then the consumer will ask themselves what has changed? They'll pick up the Wii controller demo (which I'm sure will be in every store that sells video games) and they'll be able to feel the difference from the controller. That's what Nintendo wants the focus to be on: the controller!
You really won't understand how much more immersive that controller is than just better graphics and physics until you actually try it. - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sKiLLa182 said: "...It's also a good way of showing people how controls really make a difference on a game like Zelda. This is not entirely true as Nintendo has already stated that the Wii version of Twilight Princess will have enhanced graphics. Still, I agree with you 100% about Nintendo doing this to keep their promise. How would all of the GC owners who are not planning on buying a Wii at launch feel if Nintendo did not keep this promise?
It would be very easy for Nintendo to simply release for Wii only and boost launch day sales of the system by forcing die hard Zelda fans to upgrade. I applaud them for not doing so.
- sKiLLa182, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, they're releasing it for both systems because Nintendo promised it would be out for the GameCube. When seeing such a display some people might also think that $200-300 for a new controller and slightly improved graphics isn't simply worth it.
"You really won't understand how much more immersive that controller is than just better graphics and physics until you actually try it."
I haven't tried Wiimote and I suspect that you haven't either. A two minute session at some exhibition doesn't really count. Let's talk about the greatness of Wiimote when we've all used it for a good few weeks with several games.
As usual, I predict that Wii will be (again) third in the console race. In order to succeed it needs lots of exclusive killer titles - something we didn't get too much on Gamecube. Mario, Zelda and Metroid will surely be good, but not enough. Nowadays it's the GTAs and Halos which sell consoles in North America and Europe.
