- datagod, on 10/12/2007, -6/+118Maybe they need a yoyo attachment or a bunji cord of some sort. Throw the control? It comes back and hits you in the teeth instead of marking up your TV screen.
On the other Hand, the PS3 crowd are also being asked to calm down: "Sorry about the late delivery, the underperforming overpriced hardware....Sorry about the new "doesn't rumble" feature....Please stop throwing bricks at our Sony executives!!" - julienbh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+59People are dumb. Maybe the wiimote is not idiot proof, so what?
- NYC10004, on 10/12/2007, -2/+55"reports of uncoordinated gamers causing damage to televisions, furniture and even fellow players."
I got a picture in my head of a bunch of "starwars kids" Trashing their living rooms. - Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Or all the reports of wrist strap breakage. Say your holding your wiimote and swing it insanely fast and it flys outta your hand, it would move a little then the wrist strap would go taut. Even if it did snap, the action would significantly slow the wii-motes velocity. However if your a dumbass and are swinging the wiimote around by the wrist strap, then yes, you deserve to have it snap and fly into your tv. Its like darwinism but with home electronics.
- sdevoid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28This is hilarious--great PR for Nintendo.
The Wii is just too fun for some gamers to handle.
"Even beyond our expectations people are becoming more and more excited playing with the Wii....We are encouraging people to understand that you really don't have to be so excited..."
The only thing that could be better is if people started dying of joy when they were playing the game. Miyamoto might say, "We're asking players with health conditions to calm down, realize it's just a game." - geodescent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I read that the top speed that a fastball will register in WiiSports is 94 mph. Apparently, a lot of drunk people seem to forget that minor fact.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Seems like the "reports" I've read involved bowling.
Which makes me think people aren't throwing the remote at all, but rather walking forward like they would toward the lane, and then lunging at the poor television. We had to put a tape line on the carpet in the living room to remind my kid about it.
"*****, I can't believe I did that! Quick, somebody get a table knife and saw apart the strap cable!" - madaznboi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Only when my brother told me that he actually lost the remote during a particular intense session of dragon ball z, doing a kamehameha no less did I believe these stories.
I'm not angry at Nintendo, it just makes me laugh because EVERYONE is so immersed in this new gaming experience.
Screw playing games like a zombie, time to put playing back in "playing video games". - GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19@PirateFSM
Look, man you're either with us or you're against us. None of this flim flam "oohh, look at me I'm in the middle!1" hippie *****. If you wanna be in the middle, you might as well be a monkey - shit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17And by "playing it normally" you mean "chewing on it".
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Wii Capoeira, maybe?
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21and your the sucker for paying 650 dollars (or more) to play the same damn games you have been playing but with better graphics...
- OUChevelleSS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14You're supposed to hold onto the controller, not let it orbit around your wrist via the wrist strap.
- tdishman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I've thrown a 95 mph fastball in baseball. I could easily see someone swinging the Wiimote by the wrist strap trying to get a faster pitch.
- CarbonEclectic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9What game exactly are people playing that is causing the wrist strap to break? Even in boxing it's hard to imagine throwing such a crazy punch that it would cause the wrist strap to snap. I only have Red Steel, Wii Sports, and Zelda, is there another game out there that is the culprit?
I do like the solution that was already posted elsewhere on digg where there are instructions on reinforcing the strap with fishing line. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10it's never necessary to swing the wiimote that hard, anyone who has a Wii yet (and doesn't have it sitting in their closet) knows that the harder you try to make it go, the more distorted and slow the movements on screen will be. It works best when you give it a moderately fast movement, not an insane blur.
Case in point: you do NOT need to throw actual punches in wii boxing, it makes NO DIFFERENCE. - DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10As a drunk frat boy alumni, I can say that I have a really good grip when I'm drinking. If I didn't, I wouldn't be able to get drunk. I'd keep dropping my solo cup/bottle of Jim Beam. And I never dropped a controller when drinking, even when punching my roommate as he beat me over and over again in Mario Kart.
I blame television. - roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Not trying to be argumentive, but 96 MPH is my top, one of my co-workers (wii is in the office!) threw a 98...its easier to throw the fastballs in a short "flick" movement than it is to realistically throw it. But i do it realistically because its fun and it gets my blood pumping to move around alot. I "hook" my forefinger around the front of the wii-remote and use my middle finger for the trigger...that way i have a good grip...but even then, its not heavy enough to generate enough momentum to pull itself out of the hands of even the weakest person i know....
- OdinsFury, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I know wii bowling is really fun, but you have to remember that the controller is not a bowling ball.
- brandiniman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Bungee cord = BAD, Now they're just going to let go and it'll come careening back in their face or balls. Lovely.
Duct Tape it to the hands of those ADD kids. - Wisgary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@theBrink:
I disagree, it doesn't have to be hard, but making the full motions of a punch really helps out with the control on Wii Sports Boxing. When you make the correct movements you can do jabs, hooks and uppercuts both to the face and the body. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8there is no noticeable lag, if there was, it would not be as fun as it is. The only thing that resembles breakage of control is when you play a game that has limited action (such as Zelda, you can only swing your sword so fast - no matter how fast you may be moving IRL)
If you think about it there shouldn't be, the tilt sensor in the wiimote should be just as fast as any wireless controller at sending its data, and for the IR components - well, speed of light too laggy for you? - ShivaOritiner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6At 40 bucks a pop, I still don't understand why people aren't wearing the wrist straps and more so, why they're letting go after whipping the control towards the tv.
Btw... anyone else get the "Wii Safety" email? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@brandiniman
Well, if they throw the controller and it hits them in the nuts... they will quickly learn to not let go of the controller. - jackcheng, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF60NkPY4-M
- Pile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maybe they're playing football and spiking the controller when they score?
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7After playing the most strenuous Wii games these past two weeks for hours on end I still have no idea how these people manage to throw their Wiimotes.
- madhouseradio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6==And by "playing it normally" you mean "chewing on it".==
Go easy man, who wouldn't go for one of them straps if you got wing sauce on it...all nice and shimmering, caramelized and....spicy - OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A lot of stores are selling rubberized/silicon grips for the Wiimote.
- SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -12/+16Me too. Wait.. That would be you.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5....like that bluesbros scene with all the cowboys throwing bottles at the stage
hahaha - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Wii Bowling is supposively causing a lot of problems...
- sparkalex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7While my wife was playing Tennis, the remote slipped out of her hand, the strap snapped and went flying into a near window. Luckily nether the remote or the window were damaged.
I used to think these reports were due to over hyper kids, but now ive seen it first hand. We never flung the remote around, we were always very aware of reports of snapping straps, so we were always very cautious.
!! The point here is that the strap does not need alot of force for it to snap. !! - ajrizzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can see why people might lose it in Bowling... pretending it's a real ball, your instinct would be to let the object go, as you start your follow-through.
Muscle memory? - hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well, you're getting dugg down because the kids here just can't believe that a strap would ever break, but it happened to me too, when I thought it was next to impossible to break.
- pureliquidhw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just had the greatest idea for a controller addon:
the wii-yomote. they could release a ridiculous anime styled yo-yo game where absurd tricks are done with the yo-yo like wii-yomote. - pirotess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It sounds like Wii TV screen protectors is the next innovation.
- Skywise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FYI. The "skins" you can purchase for the remote work VERY well and grip much better than the smooth plastic. I've had no instances of "thrown" controllers yet. Having a friend hitting the ceiling fan while serving a tennis ball, yes... (it's a low ceiling)
- freeboarder1402, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3maybe Nintendo should include a Plexiglas/plastic TV guard....how absurd that we have to think of these things. PEOPLE LISTEN: "DON'T THROW YOUR REMOTES AT YOUR EXPENSIVE TV!!"
- meepus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Throwing yourself into games is more fun. Throwing remotes is a bad idea. Driving like a grandma? Also bad. I bet you were the kid who got mad at people for 'tagging too hard' in touch football: as if the game's players were supposed to be as delicate and graceful as ballerinas. Let's face facts here: you're a spoilsport, and a wuss to boot.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ok, you guys are officially not allowed to handle any remote again, ever.
Seriously, I don't play the the wrist strap at all and I never have a problem.
"every wrist strap should be checked periodically" - What the *****? Maybe you should just give up living now? - dontlookdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It seems like they could just make a stronger strap rather than a wii glove.
- eldingo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Wii strap is easily broken just by design. I am a 25 year old gamer and I am not abusive with my electronics. My strap is broken on one of my remotes and frayed on the other. They break simply because of the looped string design. You loop a tiny string around itself and the friction of the string just loosening and tightening in everyday play is more than enough to wear through the string. That said, calm down don't throw the remote, hold onto it and be a little more gentle. all it takes to throw a fastball is a small flick of the wrist no crazy Wiimote flinging!
- Kaleb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2New Nintendo Release: Macewarrior 2: 12th Century Combat
- DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2can you define "playing normally"?
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I gotta admit, I'm afraid of letting some my more "enthusiastic" friends play this thing without constantly watching them.
I mean, people should realize that this thing is made so that 5 year olds can play.
I think the key people need to understand is there is a difference between swinging fast and swinging hard. Swinging fast is just moving it enough to get the controller through the air. Swinging hard is using more strength then necessary and you end up having to pull back on your swings. That kind of sudden momentum change is probably the riskiest moment for it to slip out of your hand. - Kaleb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just wait till Lucasarts comes out with some special edition wiisaber...
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shoryuken.
i bet somebody's tried it in wii-boxing. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In the industrial world, these are normally called "boots". A place I used to work put them on PDAs and other such devices designed to be used in auto manufacturing plants. They do work, and prevent damage to the device when dropped, in some instances.
