- KozmoTKramer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+56good question, Gears is suffering drastically without it. People have to go to convoluted lengths to play ranked games with friends. It is nearly impossible to play with acquaintances.
- elcidcannon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Agreed. R6 Vegas needs it too. Its partly what made Halo so revolutionary.
- gallagherFTW, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30halo 2 is the best multiplayer game i've ever played, but i do like the counter strike system. i think GoW would be a much better game with either of these systems in the next iteration
- dgritsko, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Sounds like someone didn't get a 360 for Christmas...
- Cdog923, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18If Gears of War had Halo's matchmaking, it would totally blow Halo 2 out of the water.
As a result, online play is Gears greatest liability, instead of its greatest strength like it is with Halo 2. - warchant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19as do we all
- valinorbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13MS should have made this one of the requirements for putting a game on the 360. There's no excuse for the crappy server browsers in most recent games when Halo 2 has such an awesome matchmaking system.
- windowsrookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Now, if only they could get the modders out of Matchmaking...
- EricJD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Halo 2 has awesome matchmaking abilities. Best of any game, in my opinion.
- Juntistik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"Maybe because it's fun to be able to join a game you have a certain level of control over?
If I don't want to play a giant CTF match on a particular level, the only way for me to play giant matches shouldn't force me to potentially play on that level.
Halo 2's matchmaking is a good supplement, but server (or preferably, party) lists should still be an option."
Thats what custom parties are for. You know you can host your own right? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Halo matchmaking works astonishingly well...
- Hipple, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I just wonder if Epic actually thought their system was satisfactory, or if Cliffy B decided that coding a better multiplayer set up would be "too hard"
- McGrude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Lightyears ahead, and over 2 years old at the same time. Game developers just don't pay attention to what works I guess. I think the Halo2 "LAN party over XBox Live" feeling is what made Halo2 so strong, and on top of the weekly XBox Live most played games on Live list until the release of Gears of War.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Halo 2 has simply the best multiplayer going. If you enter a game there is a good chance that you will be matched in a game with a group of people at about your level. The result is (usually) fairly competitive, close games. Yes, it doesn't work 100% of the time, but it is light years ahead of everybody else.
- McGrude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9But a TEAM BASED game should allow you to play with YOUR TEAM, not some random collection of asstards. ( Ok, they're not all asstards obviously, but many are).
- Thorpe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Anyone who's interested to find out about Halo 2's matchmaking system, check this out:
http://www.bungie.net/Games/Halo2/page.aspx?section=FAQInfo&subsection=matchmaking&page=1 - dolemite5005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm just happy that Bungie is doing such a huge public beta with Halo 3 multiplayer. Hopefully most of the bugs/glitches will be caught during this period to keep H3 from becoming what Halo 2 did, or what Gears of War is becoming right now; all glitching, no fun.
- djh816, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6how about they do the first step by adding it to gears of war or crackdown?
- TheSevenDuffs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6it really wouldnt work for the majority of games, the reason it works for halo is because there's a huge amount of people playing it. it would probably work for GoW and R6:V, but it really wouldnt work for any other games that dont have tens of thousands of people playing at all times
- PunkRampant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@snoods
Matchmaking isn't "easy to exploit". The reason cheaters have run rampant on Halo 2 is because the original Xbox is relatively easy to mod. People have used Action Replay they bought for $20 to get super speed and stuff like that. - xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7yes, but you need to have friends to do that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6but when you allow people to play with friends in ranked matches, there is always a STRONG possibility of foul play
- McGrude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@estiv
Agreed, but that's what custom games were for and you could switch back and forth between custom games and matchmaking at will, without having to restart the game lobby and re-invite all your friends. - PunkRampant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Halo 2 also had custom games where you COULD tweak all of those options..
- gettempapa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Maybe because it's fun to be able to join a game you have a certain level of control over?
If I don't want to play a giant CTF match on a particular level, the only way for me to play giant matches shouldn't force me to potentially play on that level.

Both of these things are being fixed in Halo 3. There is a vito system system where you can vote if you dont like the map or gametype chosen.
There is also a custom party game searching option now so you dont need to have friends to play. - noneuclidean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Blog spam. It seems like a quarter of the game news that gets dugg comes from some lame gaming blog quoting 1up.com. Digg the real thing.
- Snoods, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It really is a great system the got going, but I still play halo everyday, and there are many glitches in the matchmaking system that can be found and abused by cheaters. Such as Bridging, Stand-bying for host, and many others that I'm probably not aware of. Halo may have so many cheaters because of its popularity or because matchmaking is easier to exploit, I'm not to sure. So I am thinking that if more games used matchmaking and kept making improvements to it, they could find ways to limit the number of cheaters on games. Even though there will always be one or two douche bags out there searching for another way to get the eStatus up.
- masterthiefster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Heard the expression "first come, best dressed"? Lots more will digg this than will bury it, and may well bury a digg of the originating story as a dupe.
- cracell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whoops, like 5 typos. Sorry.
- elsnow77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2if halo 2 had the option to still do matchmaking, but search through games by level. That would be so much better IMO. i hate when none of my friends are on, and i want to play with a certain weapon on a certain level, and I cant. I also wish there was a playlist just for swords, swords are my fav. weapon, but unless im playing with friends, i cant use them that much.
- Doomy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree. CoD2 was THE game to get on launch day for the 360, but it quickly faded away because of its troublesome online mode. If they had gotten that right from the get-go, more people would have played it for a longer time. And GoW? GoW is almost impossible to play with your friends, although it is better than some 360 games because you can pick the ranked game you want to go into. And the other games? Not a chance that they come even the littlest bit close to Halo 2 in terms of matchmaking prowess. I have played a lot of 360 games, and there is not one out there (to my knowledge) that lets you play with guests! There are maybe a few that even let you play with 2 Live accounts at the same time!!!
Halo 2 remains the best matchmaking system out there, even 2 years after its release, because of these 3 things:
1. Lets you join (ranked) matchmaking with parties of your friends, and stay with that party after the game ends
2. Lets guests play with you in full (unranked) matchmaking playlists
3. Lets more than 1 Live account play on the same Xbox at one time
And that is why I support Halo 2 type matchmaking on all future 360 games. - Splitter402, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I wouldnt mind..beats finding servers. On PC, I'm fine with the regular server system though.
- arcva, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sorry to reply whore, but I thought the first sentence was cool because that guy has the same name as my dad. Tomorrow's his birthday too, so happy birthday dad! Anyway halo's mm system should be on all 360 games.
- BestGreek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree all games should have a match making system. The "true skill" system isn't any good because its against playing with friends. Its just a free matching making code Microsoft offers to game makers to show them how easy it is to use Xbox live service. I would rather see them take another 2 months on a game to get the online right. Gears was so close to being the best game ever but the match making ruined it.
- Sware, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I say Console gaming is behind, PC games already have it.
Well most, GOOD Games for PC have it. - chaimpot0k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2oops.
- knodi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope this happens Halo 2 matchmaking works really well and is very quick.
- warchant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2pc games had a huge jump on consoles when it comes to online gaming...they should be ahead of consoles
- PunkRampant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1True, that's a problem that should have been addressed by now. Even when the host isn't standbying, he still has the advantage. On Halo 2 the host can get headshots from opposite sides of the map, and on Gears of War the host has a very efficient shotgun.
Still, though, this is less of a problem of Bungie's matchmaking system and more of a flaw of the Xbox Live service in general. - JonasProject, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow this story is basically plagiarizing the 1UP story, nicking entire paragraphs and the transitions -- and the story has an author's name on it? Pathetic.
- rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's very simple why i play halo 2 more , with all the other games i get booted all the time, so their are'nt as many players as a consequence. someone finally got that.
- DarQraven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm, aside from match lookups being prehistorically slow, I guess it's okay. Hell, it takes my PC less time to retrieve the complete 11.000 server list, complete with latency, no. players, map, gametype, and bot status for CS:S than for Halo 2 to find me some guys to play with.
I just a bit more control. I've had some days when it would simply NOT play a certain scenario I liked, unless I hosted it myself. Hosting yourself = waiting for people to join randomly, of whom half leave before the match starts. - kevmaguire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, I said this just this week in the "Halo 3 mute" topic ... do you think Phil Spencer might be a big Digg fan?!?
- Yogitw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If MS would allow ranked games with friends then all games could be like Halo's matchmaking. Until then
- DigitalKid215, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At first I really didn't like Halo 2's matchmaking. It was probably the 2nd game I played on XBL, once I got it working, after Crimson Skies. After over 1,000 games I can stand how you have to do matchmaking for other games like GoW and the frustration I had with Crimson Skies once I decided to play it again.
Having a dedicated server would be great and cut down on all the cheating. The only problem with that is what happens when a game is no longer "popular"? I think this were turn the console into a server coming in handy. Still would much prefer a dedicated server though. - stvnly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bet you work for 1up
- GorillaCowboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For me, I stopped playing Gears of War because the UI and matchmaking system was just a joke at the multiplayer level. You have to head back into the menu after every multiplayer game and playing with friends is nearly impossible. If GOW had the same or similar interface and accessibility as Halo 2, then i'd still be playing it right now.
This is one of the most overlooked aspects of a game. Graphics, gameplay, and weapon balance is critical but if you can't play with your friends, appreciate the matchmaking and ranking system, or navigate around the menus easily, then the game loses its appeal.
Bungie understands this and it's a credit to their unparallaled success. - andrewcool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think this is a great idea.
- jeepnut24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The crappy matchmaking setup of GOW is why I refuse to play online. Searching for a game for 5 minutes, then getting a failed to connect message is not my idea of fun. Ill stick to Halo 2 for now. As much as I hate the forced options and lack of public custom matches, it is still 10x better than the competition. When I have an hour to kill, I don't what to waste half of that time finding a quality match. I say the more that use Halo 2 system the better. Actually take that system and improve it and I will be even more happy.
- munkyxtc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd love to see even basic matchmaking functions added to games coming out today...when I play a team based game it makes no sense to play with people I've never even met before...or you can just spend hours searching for your friends matches. That's one of my biggest complaints about any online title
