- GeeksSpeakFont, on 10/14/2008, -6/+37nice deal!
- truspector, on 10/14/2008, -7/+34Seriously? $20 for a refurbished 20GB 2.5" drive is a ***** steal.
- chaosblade77, on 10/14/2008, -7/+31Very tempting.
Now that we've seen Microsoft's hand, what tricks are Sony and Nintendo going to try? I can't picture either of them doing anything since Sony is apparently relying on it's "best holiday season game lineup ever" and Nintendo won't even have enough consoles on the market to meet demand anyway. - kylef, on 10/14/2008, -2/+22This actually makes a lot of sense for those who opted for the Arcade, and now are realizing that the 360 has more to offer than just poppin in a game disc. I wonder if we are eligible here in Canada?
- HippyJM, on 10/14/2008, -16/+35Now I know where the HDD from the Red Ring box went
- nshady, on 10/15/2008, -1/+20Nintendo, take note. This is how you do a "storage solution".
- 4Prophecy, on 10/15/2008, -2/+19You're not supposed to send the HDD in with the unit. They provide a nice paper-plastic sheet in the box listing simple and precise instructions for sending the thing in. Discarding said instructions is totally your own responsibility and fault.
- aeroguy80, on 10/14/2008, -6/+21It's only $20. What more do you expect?
- PStheOne, on 10/14/2008, -4/+19You still paid $70 more... Good luck finding ANY 2.5" HDs for less than $30.
I've had a 20GB drive on my 360 since launch and not once needed any additional space. - Cherubim, on 10/15/2008, -1/+16Did microsoft recover these Xbox's from the crashed freight train ?
- Philophobic, on 10/15/2008, -0/+14400GB? Oh dear, I can't begin to imagine the Final Fantasy movie with cutgames.
- Seann7656, on 10/15/2008, -3/+15If they just lowered the insane price of their wifi adapter and/or included it with the system, they would absolutely own the market.
I hate having a 50-foot Ethernet cord running across two damn rooms, when I have a wireless router... - identitymatrix, on 10/15/2008, -2/+14Just checked newegg.com:
80GB 2.5" drive for $40 (2GB per dollar)
160GB 2.5" drive for $60 (2.667GB per dollar)
320GB 2.5" drive for $90 (3.556GB per dollar)
But yeah I guess it depends on what you plan to store on it, for some people 20GB will be plenty. For others, 20GB will be used up in a few days. - jacksons98, on 10/14/2008, -4/+15@schultenick
-Upconverted DVDs are not the same quality as Blu-ray. Native 1080p and Upscaled to 1080p aren't the same thing.
-The movies from the X360 store aren't in 1080p either, they are in 720 resolution, they are expensive to rent and have lower quality audio as well. - crownedgriffin, on 10/15/2008, -2/+12...meaning that they took a working hard drive, formatted it, and put it back in a box. Who cares so long as it works.
- lcmatt, on 10/15/2008, -0/+9Arcade consoles come with a memory unit to save games. The current dashboard is stored on the actual console however the new update will be too big to fit so MS is solving that problem with a larger memory unit for free or a 20GB HDD.
- MrBabyManSTFU, on 10/15/2008, -0/+9I'd rather buy a new arcade that comes w/ a full 3 year warranty for RROD and get only a refurb HD from MS. Something about refurb consoles make me nervous
- Ecsa0014, on 10/15/2008, -0/+8Evidently, Nintendo also has the idea that they don't need to release any more good Wii games for it to keep selling out. I picked up a Wii originally for Zelda, Metroid, Mario and SSB. After playing those games, I saw nothing bright on the horizon. I decided to sell my Wii a while back and have not missed it at all. I honestly cannot think of one Wii game that has came out since or is coming out that has even slightly made me regret that decision. Every time I stroll by the Wii game isle in a store, I realize I made the best decision.
- kinseyincanada, on 10/15/2008, -1/+9all of those games could be better on a real controller, and not use the remote as a gimmick.
- stoanhart, on 10/14/2008, -3/+11I've been contemplating getting a console for Christmas. Originally, I was going to get a PS3 for Blu-Ray support. However, I am starting to wonder whether Blu Ray is really worth it, as it seems the format is flopping at the moment. I'm only a casual gamer, so spending $400 on something that will get limited use seems a bit extreme.
Then again, I would love an HD player to match my TV, and if they studios drop Blu Ray disc and player prices, the format could still replaced DVD. Then I'd feel like an idiot for getting the 360.
Choices, choices.
If Sony cuts the PS3 to $300, though, they've definately got a sale. - SillyRabbits, on 10/15/2008, -0/+8Why do people keep asking for a silly Blueray drive? You can already buy a stand alone blu-ray player for $200 and that price is only going to drop. Anything MS could put out would cost more than that. I've never found a DVD player, on any game system, that comes close to the ease and efficiency of a stand alone player interface and remote. If people want a Blueray player, just buy a damn player - an inexpensive solution to your problem is already on the market.
- smoger, on 10/15/2008, -1/+9this is a very good deal, especially now that arcade's are packing in Sega Superstars Tennis.. so for $220 you get the console, 5 arcade games, SST, 20gb hard drive, and 512mb memory unit.
but on the other hand.. it won't hurt the Wii's sales much at all. people aren't flocking to stores just looking to buy "a videogame".. they're flocking to stores to buy "a Wii". If price had anything to do with it, they wouldn't be selling for over MSRP everyday of the year on ebay and craigslist. - mugupo, on 10/15/2008, -0/+8Compare to Wii storage moron.
- MiDri, on 10/15/2008, -0/+8Cat5 cable + bridge mode one of any of these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Sub ... and you saved your self a buttload.
- vocalyouth, on 10/15/2008, -2/+9why do they need to be on the hard drive at all? stream it all using tversity (win) or connect360 (mac). i use my 360 for media constantly and the 20 gig hard drive is more than enough room.
- chaosblade77, on 10/14/2008, -3/+10I don't think the blu-ray format is going to totally flop, especially since it's still young. I think Pioneer has developed 400GB blu-ray discs that have yet to really be utilized, so assuming something happens with that there is a ton of potential for it. I doubt it will take over as the general medium for movies anytime soon since the players are still $200 or so for a low end one, but once we see sub-$100 players and $20 movies I think a lot of HDTV owners will make the move. Just my opinion though.
I don't own a PS3 yet, but I'm in a different position. It's an issue with Sony removing features - I want backwards compatibility since I don't have a PS2 anymore, and finding a used 20/60GB console for a reasonable price is difficult. Considering almost every game I want is a 2009 (or later) release, I'm not ready to pay a premium price for a used console. - inactive, on 10/15/2008, -0/+620+ GB is just for people that want to hoard demos and crap. I'm also a 20 gig owner and have 8 gig left..
however don't I need that much just to use the netflix feature alone? It says something about that at the promotional link. - enclaved, on 10/15/2008, -0/+6Just got this is my email shortly after reading this article
http://www.ecost.com/Detail/Xbox+360/Microsoft/XBO ...
20gig premium 220 - 20 MIR, tis a refurb with only 30 days parts/labor though - Ecsa0014, on 10/15/2008, -1/+7@sremick
You just strengthened my argument. This may come as a shock to you but many of those games are available for the 360, which I now own, and have higher res graphics and actually use a real controller. I owned Zelda, Metroid, and RE4 for Wii and enjoyed them but none of the other Wii exclusives you named above actually draw my attention.
I'm not an idiot, I know there are many developers that work on Wii games but it looks like the Wii is going to be a replay of what happened with the gamecube, A few great games (mainly first party), and lots of lousy 3rd party shovelware and ports. - dionahwai, on 06/15/2009, -0/+6Tried it and it doesn't work. They just tell you that the NXE will fit on the Pro and Elite so you won't need additional storage. Would have been nice to have a free 512mb memory card so that I don't have to recover my profile at friends houses but other than that, I still have 80gb free on my Elite so it's okay. One of the few better things I have to say about the PS3 over the 360 is their use of non proprietary storage. Memory is so cheap these days that there is no excuse for the ***** that Microsoft is offering customers
- enclaved, on 10/15/2008, -0/+5I absolutely agree with you on that point. However I'm ok with MBM continuing to speak. I've had good luck with refurbed products but the risk was tempered by much higher savings. I was more or less posting that as a comparison of how good an offer MS has created.
- barnett25, on 10/15/2008, -3/+8What I want to know is when I can get a Jasper based Xbox 360, and how I can make sure that is what I am getting.
- pixelate, on 10/15/2008, -0/+5Sony has industry partners that helped Blu-ray become the accepted next-generation optical disc format.
Some of these partners produce their own standalone Blu-ray players, and if Sony were to significantly reduce PS3 pricing, it would cannibalize those potential sales. There's probably a formal agreement that they won't do this in the near future, but it's still speculation. - truspector, on 10/14/2008, -3/+8@pstheone
Owner since launch as well. ~8GB left. - getatmedigg, on 10/15/2008, -0/+5@ enclaved-Are you telling me that PS3 owners have more Blu-ray discs than game discs? However,I bet that Sony PS3 sales are counted as blu-ray players sales.
@ IneffablePolk-dude Sony didn't make the cheapest DVD player and when the PS2 came out. I bought a DVD player b/c there were some many titles. I don't own a PS2 or PS3. - crownedgriffin, on 10/15/2008, -5/+10Damn you Microsoft. I think this may be the straw that finally makes be buy an XBox 360.
- SillyRabbits, on 10/15/2008, -0/+5@MrFurious2k
Profile 1.1 also required secondary video processing and local storage. The only thing profile 2.0 added was the ethernet connection (which many 1.1 players had) and upped the storage requirement from 256MB to 1GB - those are pretty minor things. All you have to do is buy a player that is compatible with 2.0 and you'll be future proofed for a number of years. I, and many others, actually prefer having the inputs/outputs separated. It sure makes switching between activities much easier (unless you use the same audio surround settings to play games as you do for watching movies). Anyway, I still don't see why people want MS to sell them a $300 blu-ray drive that needs a xbox360 before it will even work, when they will simply be able to buy a full stand alone player for - SillyRabbits, on 10/15/2008, -0/+5The pro comes with a 60GB HD as standard now. Nothing has changed with the arcade, you were always able to add a HD to it, it's just really cheap to do it now (but it's a 20GB one).
- rickyroca, on 10/15/2008, -0/+4Dont forget to add $20-$50 for the audio adapter for optical audio (if you're not HDMI audio capable) when using HDMI for video.
Microsoft Xbox 360 HDMI AV Cable. Even still, this is a fantastic deal. - Azuroth, on 10/15/2008, -0/+4@Philophobic - It will still be only half the length of the next Xenosaga episode...
- pixelate, on 10/15/2008, -2/+6@IndigoMoss - his point was that Microsoft used the accessory pricing to make up some of the money lost elsewhere. Sony chose not to do this. Microsoft's console has been profitable for a while now. Sony's still is not.
Microsoft has since been able to make significant price cuts. Sony will not. It's a tradeoff, and one that some consumers would find acceptable. - neonoodle, on 10/15/2008, -7/+11Wii doesn't need to drop any price to keep selling out.
- adveyes, on 10/15/2008, -1/+5Blue-ray is still young. I think that before it dominates the market, blue ray players will be very cheap. That's how market works. So, in my opinion, the right choice is XBOX 360, just because of the price.
- smergs, on 10/15/2008, -2/+6For $20 who give a *****. If you are one of the eligible and you don't take this offer you are an idiot. Microsoft has always overcharged for the HD's and they are finally giving an option to make one what it's actually worth. Refurb will be fine. It's not like these hard drives have been spinning away in PC for years. The Xbox 360 wouldn't be accessing it that much while playing most games I wouldn't think. I'm pretty sure other components of the 360 are going to go bad before a hard drive. This is a great deal!
- VacantThoughts, on 10/15/2008, -0/+4Pretty sure my PS3 came with a 40 gig hard drive, which means 80 is not the lowest. I thought the lowest/cheapest system you could get came with a 20, but I don't expect my PS3 to give out anytime soon so I never check prices.
- Akaziel, on 10/15/2008, -0/+4I didn't read the linked article, but the one that I read last night off of Gamespot says no. You have to put in your serial number and model number, and it'll tell you if you're eligible.
- MrBabyManSTFU, on 10/15/2008, -3/+7The appeal of the wii was they had innovative controllers and it was fun for the whole family; unfortunately the appeal quickly wears off when you realize the games suck balls at which time you'll put the Wii away and break out the 360/PS3 again.
- paulvq, on 10/15/2008, -0/+4That's not how it works. You're buying something that works only with the 360 from the only company that makes them. Of course it's going to be more expensive than a standard desktop hard drive.
