- evozero, on 12/12/2007, -1/+105well i guess canadian x360 owners can make good use of the divx playback feature they recently added.
- Aroundtown27, on 12/12/2007, -2/+48I'm so sick of paying more for stuff when our dollar is about equal now. It especially bothers me when its digital stuff!
- gebx, on 12/12/2007, -1/+393 years ago $1 Can= $0.60 US
Today $1 Can = $1.02 US - RiverBelow, on 12/12/2007, -1/+28Who the ***** said anything about Apple?
- nigel40, on 12/12/2007, -4/+31The Canadians at least get to live in a better country.
- KingAdrock, on 12/12/2007, -4/+27I refuse to rent any movies or buy any xbox orginals until they price them at level that isn't INSULTING. We waited forever for this and we get this, thanks MS!
- inajeep, on 12/12/2007, -1/+22So all that extra profit is heading to MS's pockets or is it the taxes?
- theradical, on 12/12/2007, -0/+21especially considering our dmca is out the window!
- Zedix79, on 12/12/2007, -8/+27Uh, your argument doesn't make sense. If the Canadian dollar is stronger (or on par with) than the American dollar, then the cost should be the same.
- troycott, on 12/12/2007, -4/+23I screwed Microsoft by never buying any of their products since Windows 3.1
- JeffD, on 12/12/2007, -2/+20Um, devauling our curency would make imports (such as movies via xbox live) more expensive, not cheaper.
- ThinkFr33ly, on 12/12/2007, -19/+32The Canadian dollar is stronger than the American dollar, and there are international transaction fees.
This isn't arbitrary. - inactive, on 12/12/2007, -0/+13Jealous much?
- Aroundtown27, on 12/12/2007, -7/+20pocket
- Adenosine, on 12/12/2007, -4/+16the fees, ok. but if the canadian dollar is stronger, shouldn't canadians be paying less for the same content. do I just not know economics good?
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -1/+1350% transaction fees?
If a 6$ movie costs 9$, that's 50% in transaction fees. The exchange rate isn't even 5%. - inactive, on 12/12/2007, -3/+14They're punishing you for your governments involvement in bombing the Baldwins.
- nigel40, on 12/12/2007, -0/+11Here's a metric for you: How many countries has Canada invaded lately? If I get cancer, do I have to sell my house to get treated? If you would like many more reasons, please consult the headlines in your daily newspaper.
- Fyro, on 12/12/2007, -2/+11That isn't the point of this, we want to content, I want to content, but I do not want to be price gouged when every other country with the vmarketplace is getting it for much MUCH cheaper... we pay 40%+ compared to the US, 30%+ compared to Europe. Why? Theres no logical explanation, not to mention the fact we already pay more for MS Points than the US, that is a DOUBLE price gauge on the Canadian consumer.
- Doghound, on 12/12/2007, -1/+10Just one correction, gebx....
Today (12/12/07): $1 CAD = $0.990884 USD (or, $1 USD = $1.00919987 CAD) - hipnotyq, on 12/12/2007, -2/+11wow... angry republican lol
go burn a cross - RiverBelow, on 12/12/2007, -1/+9Yes, if the Canadian dollar is stronger, it takes less of it to equal x amount of American dollars, Grade 1 ***** here. Why is it still more?
- daridave, on 12/12/2007, -3/+11the CAD is currently at 0.9870 USD, slightly lower, but a few weeks ago it was actually over. It's not just more points, what some people may not know is it's also the value you pay to get points that is off. Yes, a point costs more in Canada than in the United States. If the value should surpass the USD again, it means Canadians are getting double-screwed. Why is Microsoft acting so stupid? It's not like their console sales are all that great in Canada too, so instead of scaring people away, why not try to lure them in ?
In other news, movie ticket prices here in Montreal, Canada, went up 1$ a few weeks ago. Relative? Could be some external pressure.... - Fyro, on 12/12/2007, -2/+10Who cares where they are based, they don't charge Europe 40% more for content, they charge them 7-10% more, Now, please don't try defending a company that is only charging Canadians this extreme extra amount of money. I love my xbox, and looked forward to this service, but the prices are ridiculous for Canadians.
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -0/+8This is actually a very small piece of a much larger problem we've been having in Canada since our dollar approached parity with the U.S. dollar. Ever since the 80's, we've been told by stores / companies that the big reason stuff was costing us more than in the states was that their (your) dollar was worth more, yet now that the situation is semi-reversed, the prices aren't changing to show this.
I'm not saying they should, since I know that the value of our currency compared to the U.S. shouldn't really have THAT big of an impact on our pricing, but it's frustrating to have been told something for the past 20 years, only to find them reversing their story now to ensure that they don't have to actually drop their prices for a change. - ferrariman60, on 12/12/2007, -0/+8In order to have a stable economy that's a result of leeching off another, which doesn't really make much sense anyways, one would assume that the economy being leeched is stable. Follow so far? I'm also assuming you're trying to imply that canadians are leeching off of the US's economy. That is just a bad idea, since our economy is not in any position to be stable at the moment, and won't be in the near future. Just saying.
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -0/+7ssshhhh with your logic.
- HeatVision, on 12/12/2007, -0/+7I don't think economies of scale affect the Canadian market when it comes to digital distribution. All the files are already encoded for the American video marketplace, all they have to do is make sure the paperwork is signed.
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -0/+7Prices quoted above are slightly inaccurate. I just checked Video store on marketplace and the prices are 440 and 580, not 460 and 610. Not a hella lot of difference though. Guess I'll stick to torrents for all my HD video needs.
- george01, on 12/13/2007, -0/+7I think bobburn may be seriously misinformed about our health care system. Why would you think the Canadian health care system is not up-to-date, can you cite any specific examples? Are you aware that many countries (Canada included) frequently outperform the U.S. in health care standards? From wikipedia: "The World Health Organization's ratings of health care system performance among 191 member nations, published in 2000, ranked Canada 30th and the U.S. 37th, and the overall health of Canadians 35th and Americans 72nd."
Just because a few wealthy people go over to the U.S. to avoid wait times doesn't exactly make me want to emulate your health care system. I also wonder how many proletarians get to see those same doctors the super-wealthy get to see. Riddle me this if our health care system is not up to date compared to "your" standards (which clearly is not the case), then why do many American citizens come over to try to get in on it (I don't blame them, it's unfair that the U.S. spends roughly twice per capita on health care vs. Canada yet continues to under serve the very people that foot the bill)?
P.S. Canada has 2,800 soldiers stationed in Afghanistan, I wouldn't exactly call that being bogged down. As the old saying goes "fool me once..."; you'll note the evident absence of Canadian involvement in Iraq. - rey1867, on 12/12/2007, -5/+11ur not shipping any movies on xbox live jackass
and it doesnt matter either way because shipping costs dont vary if ur shipping from china to the states or canada - Fyro, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6Really don't see what you are referring too, it is the government not the people. Not to mention the US is an even higher polluter.
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah. I like my movies in mono, too
- sukhvail, on 12/12/2007, -1/+7The Toronto Blue Jays won in 92 and 93.
- adamgobarnes, on 12/12/2007, -1/+7Microsoft is an multi-national company with major offices in Canada, and under NAFTA there is no duty fees between the US or Canada on this media, they're charging this because they can. I agree with the policy of don't buy it if they price it like this, so I'm going to get a PS3 for my high def player. MS tried to screw me so they can lick my balls. Besides the PS3 has an easily replaceable hard drive, I'm only using this thing for media on my HDTV anyways.
- Rahodeb, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah! It's not a canadian punishment, it's a US bonus.
- max420, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5Canadians care, dickwad.
- max420, on 12/12/2007, -1/+6As a Canadian, this is why I pirate everything. I illegaly download movies, tv shows, games etc. etc. Because american companies think they can get away with ripping off canadians... Well ***** em... I'm using Windows Vista... I didn't pay for it, and it validates. I only pay for 360 games, because I have to or I won't be able to play them on Xbox Live.
I haven't purchased or rented a movie in 5 years because its too expensive. Why should I pay 34.95 Canadian for a movie that is available in the states for 19.99, and the Canadian dollar is on par with the US dollar. Its highway robbery. They think they can get away with it because Canadians are used to paying more for *****, but that was back when our dollar was weaker and it made sense.
If they don't lower the prices, I predict more and more people will just download stuff anyway. - max420, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5and the tools.
- s1mph0ny, on 12/12/2007, -5/+10Both. Of course, you can't completely fault microsoft for charging more. The canadian market is much smaller, which means a higher price point won't hurt sales very much.
- Rahodeb, on 12/12/2007, -3/+8This is just payback for having cheaper meds. We go there to buy prescription meds, you come here to...uh...download stuff.
- max420, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5Now the Xbox supports Xvid... just download all your movies on BitTorren and then stream it from your PC. Thats what I do, and it works great. I mean... Microsoft is giving you the tools to pirate movies, so go ahead and pirate away. (who but pirates use the Xvid codec?)
- graemee, on 12/12/2007, -1/+6I will. MS gives us the reason, why not.
- nuvem, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4Yeah, those duties and shipping costs on sending bits across the internet are insane.
- Logicexe, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4Funny how you tell us to make our own ***** when Canada happens to be your biggest trading partner and your largest supplier of Oil.
- BoneheadFarker, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4...says the man in the Made-In-Honduras clothing tapping away at his Made-In-China laptop...
- nuvem, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4Currency exchange isn't 40%.
Compare Steam's prices for Canada and US, and the answer is clear. - dibby1, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4quality of life? last i checked USA was just ahead of nigeria in quality of life rankings while Canada is always top 5... some food for thought.
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3There's still the demand. If they find it more economically prudent to charge more because the *demand* is still there, then more power to them. Want it to change? Don't buy their product.
- s1mph0ny, on 12/12/2007, -1/+4A stronger currency means that the other market will be paying more in US dollars (the figures in the article reflect US dollars). On the other hand, they are actually paying in Canadian dollars, which means microsoft has to charge extra for the exchange of currency.
