- Ignignokt01, on 10/11/2007, -3/+71Really surprising.
Wow. - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -5/+70Yeah...ok...how 'bout we just go straight to the source?
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/petermooreletter.htm - mrfreeziexp, on 10/11/2007, -6/+69Say what you will about Microsoft, but that was pretty respectable.
- VtmnR, on 10/11/2007, -2/+39Any corporation or industry leader that does something like this is almost instantly respected. I'll second that.
- Hazardc, on 10/11/2007, -12/+44que people still bitching about how microsoft is evil and the 360 is a piece of ***** and they are not doing enough...
- scott9378, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31What? Have I been on a different Digg.com for the last year? How in the world did you conclude that Sony can do no wrong in the eyes of diggers?
- da_bradler, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30exactly what I was thinking, wish sony would have stepped up like this when the PS2 had all it's laser problems.
- mreposter, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22$1B to cover 11.6 million units. That's $86 each. Ouch, there must be a pretty high failure rate if they're having to spend this much money on so few units.
- Spankov, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19WTF? You're kidding right? Digg is a full of Anti-Sony posters!!
- ayrkain, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17Good on MS. This is good for consumers everywhere. Wish it hadn't taken them so long to admit it, though.
- troglodytejb, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Who cares if it's for PRs sake? It still costs MS an assload of money, and a three year warranty on ANY ASPECT of an electronic device is WAY above the norm, even on electronics that have a higher failure rate than the X360.
I never expected to see this from Microsoft, but damn if I don't respect a company that huge that'll sacrifice some profit to improve customer satisfaction. - CanIGetAWitness, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Big Pharma has a pill for that.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14"because they see dollar signs"
**GASP**HOW DARE A BUSINESS ATTEMPT TO MAKE A PROFIT - macavity13, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13"We have been following this issue closely, and with on-going testing have identified several factors that can cause a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights on the console. To address this issue, and as part of our ongoing work, we have already made certain improvements to the console."
- roxya, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Yeah wow... Sony can do no wrong on Digg, putting them in the same boat as Apple.
Hilarious. - oolitic, on 10/11/2007, -14/+23Unfortunate really. Even a positive news like this is construed negatively. It's like Sony and Apple can do no wrong while Microsoft can only do wrong.
I am a neutral digg reader but the amount of Microsoft bashing here is off the charts. - dunlop, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14lol, keep trying to spin this fanboys. There is not bad angle for this from a consumer point of view (investor....probably).
Stop being so ***** married to your console of choice. They all have good and bad aspects, M$ just fixed addressed they major weakness and now Sony is dropping the cost of the PS3, this is why you want ALL the console makers to do good so there is competition and ***** like this happens.
It is a box that sits on your TV, you do not need to bash Sony/M$/Nintendo to get people to buy your console, they will buy whatever they want. people that would buy anything based off of digg input would have to be borderline retarded. - homerjs, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13Us 360 owners who have been bitching about this ,only to have fellow 'problem' free 360 owners call shananigans, are now vindicated. And the failure rate is.. that's right >30% not 3% as said originally by M$. M$ was hoping the problem would go away..but we didn't.
M$ should do a recall because I'm sure every owner with a game day until DEC of 06 unit will experience this failure - BobsYourUncle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Oh man, are you in for a rude awakening...
- Shaflugi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9So? Who cares? As long as we get the 3 year warranty, it doesn't MATTER why they did it.
- GliTCH82, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12Why are you digging him down? He's absolutely right, everyone on Digg bashed the hell out of Sony after their launch failures, delays, and PS3 issues became known not to mention the lack of launch titles and before all that, we bashed them for the ***** they tried to pull with the rootkit that Microsoft fixed.
- Amnesia10, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Actually this is welcome. If you had heard of the problems would you buy one? No so this means that consumers can buy without fear of problems. In the long term this is sensible.
- andreusboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8You just have to apply the formula. Take the number of Xbox 360 in the field, a, multiply it by the probable rate of failure, b. Then multiply the result by the average out of court settlements, c. a times b times c equals x. If x is less than the cost of recalls and warranty they wouldn't have cared.
- TheLD, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12I'm glad they did this. Yea, they should have made the Xboxes correctly in the first place, but it is not always easy to test these things when you are racing against the likes of Nintendo and Sony.
This is a very respectable thing to do and lots of other companies wouldn't do this. - omatsei, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7No, the quality of those machines didn't improve... the warranty did. If it works, great. If not, you get it replaced for free. I don't see the issue here.
- nytel, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10I'm proud! They are doing the right thing and I think anyone here who knows customer service, can't complain!
- Mitijea, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8What the F' does this article have to do with your Wii?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Good call Microsoft. Makes me feel much better about owning a 360.
- Septimus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7It;s because you have no reason to turn it on.
- kidsix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8i am most amazed by the fact that MS can lose a billion dollars and still maintain giant status in the industry. find me another tech player that would or has done something on this scale.
- dacheetah, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7As does Apple, and Sony, and Walmart, and pretty much all of the big companies.
All of them have enough good points to survive, and even thrive, but all of them are evil to the core, and lie through their teeth. - omatsei, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6"...and they are only in the games industry because they see dollar signs..." Sorry, maybe I'm misunderstanding the concept of capitalism, but what other reason is there to be in BUSINESS?
- DavidGX, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Considering the source of the problem, if a system doesn't die in 3 years it's probably not going to for a long, long time.
- elvenseven, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Sony bash tide has changed. digg noob lol.
- Kaosu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6More ***** blog spam from Destructoid. Why cant you link to the original post on Xbox.com? Im getting tired of this destructoid *****. Look at the submission and digging history of the people who post destructoid stories. They're gaming digg. Besides, there are plenty of better gaming blogs.
- UrielSynthesis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Ive had my console since Feb. 06, no problems at all. In fact, the 4 friends of mine who own one haven't had any issues either. I know a lot of people have had problems, but don't act as if any one you buy is guaranteed to fail.
Bricked all the refurbs? Put destructive codes in their units? Your tinfoil hat is on a bit too tight.
BTW, using "M$" pretty much labels you as a twelve-year-old. Not that your whacked-out conspiracy theories didn't already do that. - Brian48216, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8wow....I do believe this has to be one of the greatest moves towards customer satisfaction in quite a while.
Not only are they extending warranties, but they're RETROACTIVELY reimbursing people who had to fix their 360s.
Very few companies would ever do something like that. Ever. I don't even think Nintendo would. And I'm a wii owner. - GhettoLevis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Remember the first Playstation 2s? Yes, the ones from Sony? You know, the ones that were constantly overheating or disaligning their lasers?
Yep, at least Microsoft is doing something about it...
(Just for the record, my day-one PS2 still works as fine as my day-one Xbox360. I'm lucky.) - Aensland, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Heh, most of 'em pick a specific console to like since it's dad who is calling the money shot... "Oh, I picked the X360 / PS3 / Wii because (insert random reason)", when it should be "Dad would only buy one, so yeah."
I have preferences too, but since all platforms (eventually) have games I want, I end up buying them all. Of course, never during launch, lol... there are too many games to play to risk being hit by version 1.0 bugs. - Aeric, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Yea, but Sony also didn't have an "unlimited" budget to work with either.
I heard Microsoft is taking a huge hit on this one that could kill most companies. - pirategaspard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5His name is Robert Paulsen
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4damn, iceperson, you sure think a lot about taking it up the ass........
you wanna hang out some time? ;p - FredFredrickson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Even though the 360 fails every few months, you still get a chance to play more good games in between repairs than anyone with a full-time PS3. Ha!
- spidl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The warranty extension covers everyone in the world.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4When my 360 broke, I was on the phone for a total of about 10 minutes. There was no runaround, no scam. It was straight to the point, and it took no time for their box to get to my apartment to ship off my box for repairs. I don't know who you've talked to or when they called in, but the repair process is pretty streamlined at this point... It ought to be.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5They should - most of the time when Windows gives you the BSoD, it's your fault for being an idiot and having a bunch of junk software on your rig, or your hardware's fault.
- omatsei, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@AntBling, hightower77, & iceperson: Yeah, it's much better to go without good games for a year and a half than to play them as they come out, then go without for 2 weeks while you wait for a new console. Having a console that breaks is bad, but not buying one specifically because you don't want to be without one is retarded.
- Shaflugi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah, most BSODs I've had are from junky school computers or bad drivers.
- Shaflugi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'd say the same about my Wii. The most action my Wii has been getting is F-Zero GX and Super Smash Bros. Melee. :/
- reed311, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8It's not hard when you have a monopoly to fall back on.
