- usrlocalbin, on 10/11/2007, -3/+37Microsoft really should have made it a Blue ring instead of a Red ring............
- SteveThePlank, on 10/11/2007, -6/+38My 360 has had the Red Ring of Death for a couple of weeks now. Looks like I should really send it off sometime soon, or I won't have it back for Halo 3 >.<
Thanks Microsoft. - TheFlood16, on 10/11/2007, -4/+25My 360 red ringed in late May and I got it back a week or 2 ago. I'm somewhat of a big 360 fan, and while the experience soured me quite a bit, I'm glad to have a new system back.
- dheaddy, on 10/11/2007, -9/+30The UPS man came to collect my xbox yesterday for repair. He said he'd personaly collected 30 systems in the past week alone in my area. He then revelled in telling me his Wii had no such problems, smug git.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20That's Microsoft for you, multi billion dollar company making low quality products.
- luweez90, on 10/11/2007, -9/+27Why does "2500" a DAY sound slightly excessive to me? I mean it is only the UK after all and I know there are a lot of consoles but it still sounds a bit OTT to me.
- Natetendo83, on 10/11/2007, -10/+24somehow I'm not surprised by this
- UberC, on 10/11/2007, -7/+20Say what you want about the ps3 but at least sony can make a working console (I own both).
- Manuelmty, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.
Woman on plane: Are there a lot of these kinds of accidents?
Tyler: You wouldn't believe.
Woman on plane: Which car company do you work for?
Tyler: A major one. - TheAkolyte, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Maybe instead of doing something stupid like that, they could have made the system more long lasting.
- Azimuth1, on 10/11/2007, -7/+19I got my 360 in January and it's been fine so far, but I really want it to get the ring of death so I can send it in for a new one with the quieter DVD drive.
- TehSwat, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13I had the red rings about 4 months back, but they repaired it free, and did so in about 2 weeks, so I was still pretty happy. But agreeing with TheFlood16, I must agree I was somewhat soured over the experience of having my 500$ machine just stop working.
- AzDraon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Has the 360 Elite been effected yet with the Red Ring? I know its early, but I know many 360's on launch already had them. Just wondering for when I buy a 360 which version I should invest in.
- RiverBelow, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12I really doubt Microsoft's ability to create a functioning product. This is disgusting. In real life, not included people I met online, I know about 30 people who actually own 360's. Some of them casual, some of them more hardcore. ONE PERSON other than me (included myself in that 30), has not had a problem with their 360. For me, the odd time the disc tray gets jammed, no red lights. Also my friend's has been fine. Touch wood = Everyone else has had three rings of death.
Its a damn shame that this is happening though, just make me something that works, PLEASE. - mojo0510, on 10/11/2007, -5/+141 person so far questioning the truth about this. 2,500 per day?!?!?! Does that make any sense at all?
- rick2k, on 10/11/2007, -7/+16Doesn't surprise me.. a few of my friends have had 2 or 3 new 360's EACH just this year so far.
I guessing Microsoft are regretting rushing the design of this console... Has to have the worst rep for a console ever. I mean even at the stores here in the UK people are advised to take out product support plans as it is common knowledge that "360's break after a year" when your warranty is up!
Great i cant wait to buy a console knowing its going to die on me in t - 357 days! - formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11With weekends thrown out this equates to 650,000 broken 360's per year in the UK alone. Just ***** pathetic. The most unreliable console in history just keeps setting records.
- catharz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8It's 2,500 in the UK alone (not world wide).
http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=PS2®1=UK&cons2=X360®2=UK&cons3=PS3®3=UK&align=1
1,315,682 / 2,500 = 526.2728.
On average:
- Every 360 ever sold in the UK will break within 2 years.
- 67% of them will break within the warranty period.
Those are NOT good numbers. - snowblindnz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+101500 - 2500 a day = say 2000 average. Times 365 days = 730,000 Xboxes a year failing in the UK alone.
vgchartz.com says that 3.21 million Xboxes have been sold in 'other' countries. Countries other than America and Japan (i.e. UK, rest of Europe, Australia, NZ, China etc..).
I dont know how much of 'other' is the UK, but lets say that the UK makes up half of those sales (1.61 million, although Im sure its a lot less), then Microsoft is fixing ALL its consoles about every 2.5 years. Although it is probably more like every 1.5 years as I doubt the UK is half of the 'other' countries.
Microsoft might make a profit on every xbox they sell, but they must be loosing a hell of a lot on the warrenty. - toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13i think a red ring of death would look kind of cool on an Elite (red on black). that is, until you realize what it means. then you break down crying and call MS and sit on hold for an hour.
- dvsbastard, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I am currently a lot more pro 360 then I am pro PS3.... but there can be no arguments that the PS3's build quality is light years ahead of the 360's...
- Electric_Sheep, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11European Union. Get on MS's case! Consumer protection FTW!
- KompressorV12, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12have any of you people heard of something called a lemon law... its a law that requires a manufacture to recall a product if it's failure rate is over a certain percent, in America it is around 5%... I still laugh at the people that believe this *****
- MatttK, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I know it's easy to pile on Microsoft, especially on digg, but did anyone even read the article? This figure comes from "some guy" who supposedly phoned the repair centre and got information they'd never release to the public. Somehow I have trouble believing anything written in this article.
- panzergeist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7You know, I would agree with you in spirit, but you wrote that like a fanboyish ass.
- Pinhedd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Yes it has, my buddy bought one in May and had it die after only 29 days
- dvsbastard, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9And people wonder why the 360 hasn't had a significant price drop... All these repairs must be be blowing MS's projections completely out of the water!
- Buckiller, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Ive emailed the customer support at xbox asking when they will be fixing all the issues that have caused so many 360's to fail. I mentioned my friends experiences and all that I have read about. They told me they had no idea what I was talking about, and that now would be as good a time to buy as any.
I decided to wait until at least the fall. - panzergeist, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6"Every 360 ever sold in the UK will break within 2 years."
Why, that's just in time for Microsoft's next console!
Yes, I own a 360 and yes, it is dying and yes, I am bitter about it. Will I replace it with another 360? Hell no. - jdaniel284, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7My launch console broke about 2 weeks ago and after an absolutely obnoxious, unpleasant, and rude trip through the customer service line I was ask to give MS my credit card number to "repair" my 360. I still don't have it back, although they charged my credit card immediately after I gave them the last digit. I sent a message to everyone on my friends list telling them my 360 had died and I would be offline for a few days. Almost every single person replied with a "yeah, mine died too awhile back" message.
- dansai, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10I am personally on my 4th XBOX 360 since launch, which has just also died. It's now out of warranty, so looks like I'm screwed :(
- Toast1185, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Just out of curiosity...
I haven't got the ring yet, and I am wondering if my console is doing fine or if I should wear it out before my year warranty is done. How long have you had yours and how many hours per week did you play?
/end scientific study n=1 - inspecality, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Lucky, I had to pay $140. Four months out of warranty dangit. I bet I could have been an ***** and gotten a discount, but the guy could barely speak English so I didn't know.
- petemcfraser, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9I had red ring of death back when they made you ship your own console. I paid about 12 bucks, but the whole exchange (read: refurbished replacement) took about 8 days. But THAT console died not 45 days later and, now that they send out their own shipping boxes, it's been going on 2 weeks.
And no, I don't do stupid things to kill the console. Just bad luck.... and bad manufacturing. - Halaster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I am on my third one, and they have replaced it with a different one each time. Never a new one.
In addition the one I am currently on makes horrible noises, and did the moment I removed it from the box.
They refused to replace it with another one though saying they cannot do a warranty replacement for noises, and to call back "when" it fails. Note that they did say WHEN it fails, not if it fails.
It sounds as if a fan inside it is failing. It is not noisy all the time, but often enough to be annoying.
People: Buy the 2 year extended warranty from Microsoft. - m99stump, on 07/29/2008, -1/+5You should have never paid $140. There is a manufacturing defect, you should have bitched at them until they did it for free. Say you're selling all your xbox ***** for a PS3 - if they don't budge, laugh at their "offer" to lower the repair cost by 25% and call the Better Business Beureau, which I'm sure is getting a ton of complaints over this (and I know someone who called them and MS called them immediately to offer a free repair).
the $140 repair is a total screwjob, you shouldn't have taken it :(
If anything, check out this thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=156117 which has a pretty amazing track record of showing you how you can repair your own console yourself and not have it fail later (and learn why it is failing - basically Microsoft's design is retarded)
Great hardware killed by absolute ***** quality assurance. - formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6The 360 is a piece of ***** and the Wii is a toy.
- HRF1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This is the only thing that is keeping me away from the 360. If they can fix it, they would have another customer...
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I highly doubt the 2,500 a day number as it sems very excessive, but the defect rate IS rather high. Just how much longer is it until MS finally admits there is a problem with the 360? It took a class action lawsuit to get Sony to do something with the D.R.E. problems of the PS2.
- rusty123jimi, on 10/11/2007, -11/+14Hmmm...Im sooooo glad my launch PS3 has had not even ONE issue yet! Ooo...and I just can't wait for the great games coming out soon! You know...Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Warhawk :), Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Killzone 2, Home (free), Little Big Planet, GT5, Tekken 6! Did i menson that MotorStorm Kick ass! oh...and I will enjoy it not dying on me, EVER! HA! Suprizing what an extra $200 gives you? Hmmm...I forgot! Sony just rules!
- Dyabolik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3And this, Microsoft, is why I have not purchased your console, get your ass into gear and fix the problem.
- sumiguchi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Your dreaming Azimuth...they will repair or replace with a refurbed unit. The replacement I got is noisier that the unit I sent in :( Fortunately I have big speakers.
Be careful what you wish for. It was 4 weeks and 2 days from the time I made the call to the time I received my refurb unit.... - EnSvensk, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7They won't give you a new one. They'll just repair the old one. At least, thats what they did to mine.
- cynicalhat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4same exact thing was needed for me, exceptional service, came back with a 1 month card for xbox live!. Brand new unit to, smelled like new silicon when i fired it up.
- unusualbob, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5dont get the one that sucks its power from the 360's power supply, it will cause that to overheat. use one with an external source of power
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Can't find any up to date sales figures for the UK, but I wouldn't think there would be more than a couple hundred thousand out there.
2500 a day sounds way too high to me too, even if it was something like one in four breaking they'd have got through every single one in a month
250 a day would seem high still, 2500 a month is starting to sound reasonable - johnboyjr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3does this happen to ps3's
- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually it wasn't a "new" one you received, but someone elses repaired unit. Yes they fix them, but so you don't have to wait forever to get it back they send out a refurb/repaired unit.
- Microdot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2its cheaper?
oh.. you mean... if you dont need wireless... or a decent sized hard drive... or want to watch any hd video.. and just throw it away and dont spend $140 per pop after the one year warranty to have it fixed. yeah... then its cheaper. barely.
my ps2 from launch day: still going strong.
my ps3 from launch day: still going strong.
my xbox 360 from launch day: on replacement #4 or 5 now... lost count. - operand, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Let's see, Live Gold costs 50 dollars or so so they basically gave you 4 dollars and some change for *your troubles*?!? How nice of Microsoft (360 owner myself w/ already one dead machine)
