- goldy74, on 10/12/2007, -3/+54It's almost 2.5 years after halo 2 came out on xbox, does anyone care that it's not going to support Direct X 10 effects?
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37Getting my puppet caught in a zipper would make me talk about myself in the third person, too.
- ahatter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23im not a PC gamer but are PC gamers looking forward to halo 2?
- jhaitas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20why is it specifically for vista if it is only dx9??? seems to mean like they're looking to give people incentive to upgrade... if it is directx9 it should have no compatibility problems with xp
- McGrude, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Yes they are looking forward to it so that they can modify it with new weapons and or maps.
At least that would be my guess. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Hour after Halo 2 PC is released---
Halo 2 Cracked to run on XP!!
Thanks Microsoft for making Halo 2 on DirectX 9! - Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18In other words, it's specifically for Vista, not XP, because umm, they said so.
- logomancer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17@ahatter
I was, given the fact that I don't have an XBox (and don't really want one) and that the first Halo had a decent storyline. But no, MS wants to sell more copies of Vista, so that's the only OS that's going to get it. If Vista was the only OS they were planning on releasing this for, why didn't they make this a showcase for what DX10 is capable of, hmm? It seems like the perfect game for it...
Ah well, no Vista for me. Guess I'll have to content myself with playing Marathon. - franksandbeans, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22franksandbeans doesn't care that it's not going to support Direct X 10 effects. franksandbeans is happy with a sniper rifle in one hand and Direct X 9 in the other.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16yeah because the original Halo conversion was SOOO MODABLE.
no, I couldn't give 2 ***** about halo 2 for PC, now that it's not DX10, there is less reason to try it. I've played it on Xbox, halo isn't a good PC shooter, PC shooters are made for twitch reflexes and all the advantages of gaming on a kb/mouse combo (omg it's a console thread and I said that) while Halo on the xbox is best suited for the limitations of the xbox controller.
It's the same thing if a RTS was released for 360, it would suck because a controller would never be able to keep up with the complexity of micromanagement styles - coreyb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Thanks for a good laugh sockpuppets. I needed one today.
- waynekao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Halo 2 might tie into Live Anywhere, Microsoft's new online presence system that's inspired by Xbox Live. I think it only works in Vista.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_Anywhere - XxXoldsaltXxX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13"Hey. this is just like what i used to play on xbox live!"
Ten minutes later
"It still sucks!" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Yes, because a DX9 port of a 2 year old game is going to make me switch to vista...PASS!
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I think that this clarification blows any justification that Microsoft had for Vista-only release. I wasn't particularly crazy for that 2-years-old shooter but now I won't even bother to pirate it.
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16You're right. Stay on XP SP1. Hell, go back to Windows 2000! XP is really only 2000, but slower with fancy visuals.
Seriously, the only people that are still hating on Vista are Digg users. Get with the times. - Phyrefly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Because your laptop is severely underpowered. Even my 6 year old desktop is better equipped...
Vista wasn't designed for systems that were meant for Windows 98. - Pr0v0st, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4At this point, they should just include it with Vista. It would make a nice addition to solitaire...
- erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm sure that Halo 2 would run perfectly fine on a Direct3D 8.1 card. That's what the Xbox uses. It's just a geforce 3. This Vista only stuff is crap.
- Krakn3Dfx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10And yet you'll still have to endure Vista to play it, even though it should work fine on XP.
Hope sales are abysmal. - timmay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4THAT IS STUPID
- Shuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When Halo 2 was announced only for Vista and people were saying it would only support DirectX 10, I always thought it was stupid. The game was not made for DirectX 10, so why would they support it?
And I am a PC Gamer who is looking forward to Halo 2 because I have found no good reason to buy an Xbox, and I don't want to buy a 360. Up until now, I have accepted the fact that I can't play Halo 2 or Ninja Gaiden, but it turns out that I can at least play Halo 2! - Araxen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3PC Gamers aren't looking forward to Halo. They are looking forward to UT2007, Quake Wars, Crysis. Halo is a vastly overrated FPS when compared to the titles available on the PC. The best FPS games are on the PC.
- Tordenflesk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It'll probably be a quick installer-hack. Won't take more than 5 min. to do. WLM was "made compatible" with Windows 2000 that way.
- lacronicus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If I remember correctly, it was the 9x series of windows that made the bsod the biggest nightmare in computer history. meanwhile, my xp machine has never done it, except for my stupidity, and I can confidently say that about yours too. In case you havent realized, the OS isnt supposed to make or break a computer experience, but simply make it as painless as possible. The faster it runs and less it crashes, the better. graphics should only enhance the experience. IMO microsoft did us a huge favor with 2007. ive tried it. MS has done their job so well that i dont want to switch coz im so used to their software, but once i got used to it, 2007 was great. along your line of thinking, it would still be wise to have floppys in every computer coz you dont get coasters, despite the obvious advantages of cd's. well, another ms hater joins the ranks of fools on digg. how sad.
- guitarh3ro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't have an xbox and I love Halo!
Therefore, I play Halo on the PC. Think logically about this next time, okay kiddies? - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5My thought is that anyone who really wanted to play Halo 2, played it when it was released on the Xbox. PC Gamers want something new - not an old Xbox game that really isn't terribly impressive on a PC to begin with. Bring me Half Life 3!
- crcurran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was wondering why MS would do this since nobody seems interested. Then it occurred to me, MS could update Halo2 on the 360 so they can play with Vista PC LiveAnywhere players. Shadowrun is already announced as cross-platform game, Halo2 could be another.
PC Halo players might even get around to playing the single player game. If they do, they might want to buy an x360 when Halo3 is released.
Microsoft hasn't made too many mistakes so far, this could be it or this could be genius. - Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So let me get this straight. The one and only half way decent thing in Vista... won't be used by the flagship game, that will for some mysterious reason only work in Vista!!!
$250 bounty for the first person to run Halo2 under XP. Feel free to add to fund people!!! - Wulfgar3D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PC gamers were looking forward to Halo until Microsoft bought Bungie and made it into a console FPS. When it finally did ship for the PC it was a 2 year old console port and it showed it's age. PC gamers have Crysis, QuakeWars, Project Offset to name a few to look forward to that will blow Halo 2 away. Halo 2 on the PC will be nothing more than a bargain bin buy if at all. If they really wanted to show Vista as a gamers OS they would release Gears of War or Halo 3 on the PC not some outdated game. What are the incentives to upgrade to Vista? Games will run much slower on Vista and require a more powerful PC to take full advantage of all the bells and whistles. Where are all the great features Vista was supposed to have like the new file system? DirectX 10 is the only thing left they haven't given up on and dropped. Vista is just more bloated software but that's what you get when you have what 1000 programmers trying to program. Microsoft is giving Linux it's chance, will Linux take it and run?
- truck87bp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does it look like MS is betting on Direct X10 to be the only Savior for Vista? Heck, all you Halo fan boys can use your XP box to play Halo2.
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11They want people to buy Vista, plain and simple. And quite frankly, if you have the hardware and the money to upgrade to Vista, there's no reason you should not be doing it anyways.
- eddie72, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yeah that is really lame of Microsoft. Bungie is a Microsoft gaming coming and Microsoft wants to showcase Direct X 10 in Vista and yet can't even make Halo 2 work with Direct X 10? Good job.
- radixus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I personally thought the whole reason for Halo 2 on the PC was to show off Vistas new graphic capabilities within games and such. If the game isn't going to support the core feature that makes this version of the OS a "gamers" OS then there's no point in purchasing the game.
- dagobah77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Why the hell is it only for Vista then? Microsoft was touting the all-powerful Direct X 10 and they aren't even using it for their flagship Vista-only game! They just want you to have to give them your money for nothing... typical Microsoft.
- koko775, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shuk: you're going to have to spend just as or almost as much if you want a copy of the game and the OS, even assuming some powerful hardware. Then again, ease of piracy is a compelling argument, no?
I don't mean to accuse you of piracy, but hypothetically speaking, it's kind of a toss-up (though pragmatically, Vista would probably be the way to go). - recyclablewaste, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Well duh it's not, any computer programmer that's used DirectX api could just look at the release dates for Halo 2 on the XBOX and realize that it won't be using DirectX10 features. It's already been programmed using DirectX9 features for XBOX. You really think they'd spend more money to upgrade a game that millions with Vista are going to buy regardless? It would seriously be a waste of money in Microsoft/Bungies eyes. But you can most probably expect Halo 3 to use DirectX10 features for sure whenever the heck it comes out for PC's a couple years from now.
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7This should be obvious. To use DirectX 10, they'd pretty much have to redo every visual aspect of the game if they wanted it to actually look like a DirectX 10 game, and not just a DirectX 9 game ported to DirectX 10.
- EvilFerret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know how they are planning on making it work *only* for Vista? My guess is, it will be cracked and working fine on XP within a week of launch.
- bokchoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Halo 2 for PC is like those games that MOST people don't care for, but might pick it up just to have a few months of fun. Thats how it was for me and Halo for PC, and I must say though Halo isn't the best FPS shooter out there, it's very solid and if I ever get Vista, I'll be sure to check out Halo 2 if the situation allows me.
It's like, if I get it thats cool, but if I don't-meh. - gauravsharma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4It's probably aimed at DX9L, which is the vista implementation of DX9 but through a more elegant means (which improves performance). All current DX9 cards should have DX9L drivers for Vista.
Microsoft don't need to release this on XP any more than Sony need to release Gran Turismo on Xbox. They're pushing Vista as a new gaming platform.
You criticize Microsoft for not making everything compatible with everything else and then kick them when they do (i.e. vs Mac).
It seems like both Microsoft and you need to make up your minds. - thomasprebble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why would I bother upgrading to Vista to play Halo 2? Like people have been saying the games 2 ***** years old! There are FAR better FPS games out there MADE for PC. Also everyone who has wanted to play Halo 2 have most likely played it already.
- mabhatter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1because it was anounced first that it would only be Vista... if they're going to tie it to Vista, why not go the full route and make it DX10? It's a Microsoft game for their new OS.. why is NOT pulling out the stops to wow customers? But no. They're basically locking it down as a "cool feature" to do more of their DRM locking... and lots of people will upgrade for the "cool new" features.
- mabhatter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1because it's a Vista only game!!! Microsoft is only updating it from pseudo-DX8 to DX9... then locking the game down to only Vista so it runs in DX9 compatibility mode... won't please fans, geeks, or gamers... way to go M$!
- Bovski, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Yep it's patchable do a google for "Halo 2 XP Patch NoGrp"
- Jorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0any comparison of game speed between XP and Vista before the end of Jan 07 are going to be worthless. (It may even take longer.)
Neither Nvida or ATI has passable Vista drivers yet and they won't for a while.
Take a look at the driver issues seen when we went from DX7 -> DX8 -> DX9. It just takes time.
BTW I am not saying that Vista will be faster, I am just saying it is still up in the air. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1HAlO 2 was pegged for release 6 months after the Xbox release. Due to Microsofts Xbox 360 endever they made more changes and stated another 6 months ( making this 1 yr) than Microsoft said it would be poperfect for Media Center Owners only to announce at E3 that Halo 2 would only be released for The NEW WINDOWS VISTA OS due to the NEW Direct X 10 Technology advances Vista uses and the games that would be readily available for VIsta in the future of PC Gaming !
NOW The ***** BS ! MICROSOFT IS GETTING AS BAD AS SONY ! First PC GAMERS ARE LOW BALLED AND SCREWED OUT OF THE INTINAL HALO 2 LAUCH THAN SUBSAQUENT 2 TIMES IN DATE CHANGES NOW THIS BS!
I mean 2 f'n years and HAlO 2 is going to look like is Direct X 9 ( a step up from Halo) Whats this MS you didn't want to take away form your Shinning star the 360 and the Halo 3 game your releaseing ! ASS CLOWNS !! It's like MMicorsoft forgot about the premire unit that brought them to the dance in Voice over ip ! Online Gaming and the BEST 1st person shooters and RPG !
THE ***** PC COMMUNITY DEMANDS SATISFACTION !!!!!!! - Kking199, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is the kinda BS crap from MS that I will no longer tolerate. Which means I will not be buying Halo 2 for the PC, I could at least understand if it was a DX10 issue but it is not. It is just M$ trying to force those who want Halo 2 on their PC to upgrade to Vista. No thanks M$. I will not upgrade to Vista unless forced to for business reasons (And I don't see that happening for a few years at least) nor would I get Vista until at least SP1.
- Jorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You need more RAM, I bet you are swapping all the time...
I am running it on a 3 year old 1.4GHz/1GB table and it works just fine.
If you don't like it, don't upgrade. No one is going to upgrade to Vista to get Halo 2, but who cares. There are a lot of reasons to upgrade if you have the RAM and CPU to support it. -
