- Sarawanan, on 01/04/2008, -7/+186Kudos to Microsoft for owning up to the problem and offering compensation in the form of an arcade game. Let's hope it's a good arcade game or do we get to choose?
- stonewalled, on 01/04/2008, -4/+93the game is announced; "Hello-Kitty Goes To Memphis"
- Hobbes24, on 01/04/2008, -3/+92if they let us choose i'd consider it forgiven.
- FatLoser, on 01/04/2008, -2/+71"3rd Paragraph, live users will get a free live arcade game in the near future to thank us for our patients. "
What kind of idiot would use XBOX Live for their medical needs? You damn kids. - shoover, on 01/04/2008, -1/+66Your summary was longer and more boring than the original.
- YuriSakazaki, on 01/04/2008, -4/+63I swear, people will not only look a gift horse in the mouth, but kick it in the balls if it's from Microsoft.
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -4/+52The last arcade game they gave away was one of the best ones available (Carcassonne), so hopefully this one will be good, too. Maybe it will just be next week's release...
- Daimwn, on 01/04/2008, -5/+51It's cool that they say they are disappointed with they're performance. The LIVE team being vastly different and better than the rest of MS I do believe they are doing everything they can.I wonder if they are going to offer the 9 million + LIVE members the same arcade title or possible choices.
- CNSecrest, on 06/02/2008, -5/+49Let's hope that game is Metal Slug.
- hellbent187, on 01/04/2008, -5/+43I accept the apology everyone makes mistakes. Things are running better now and at least we had Major Nelson to keep us some what in the loop as to how the repairs were going. I'm not too excited about this free arcade game though...
- EvanVolm, on 01/04/2008, -5/+38Notice how he says Xbox Live members, not "Gold Members". Guess this means Silver members will also be getting a free game. Let's hope it ain't Uno...
- colincornaby, on 01/04/2008, -1/+32All 5 users of PSN will be overjoyed to hear it's still working.
- RandomGorilla, on 01/04/2008, -0/+24The best way to do that would probably be some kind of coupon code or free microsoft points. Actually I think the points would be better for everyone since it gives more choices for us and they might get to bank on the possibility that others may want something more expensive and fork over the cash for more points.
- seanm, on 01/04/2008, -1/+25The free game is for both Gold AND Silver members. So every Xbox Live member gets it... Major Nelson confirms it here: http://twitter.com/majornelson/statuses/560887012
- teqonix, on 01/04/2008, -4/+28I'm glad to hear that they're gonna help us out with a free game, and it's really nice to hear them be so straight-up about how they know the service hasn't been up to par lately.
Apparently there's also a rumor going around that this whole kaboodle may have been caused by a DoS attack on XBL itself, but even if not - for them to fess up to the issues and giving us a little something on top of it, I'm good.
Good on ya, Microsoft. - DarkPhoen1x, on 01/04/2008, -1/+24dude almost everyone already has that lol
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -9/+31Here comes all the comments about how it's not enough, the game will suck, that they should get a whole month/year free.... All for a week without online gaming.
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -3/+24Uno is one of the best games on Xbox Live Arcade... simple, but fun.
- salmonmoose, on 01/04/2008, -0/+19Let's hope it's a NEW arcade game, last time there was a free game I'd already bought it.

Dear Xbox LIVE Members:
During this past holiday season you helped us break a number of Xbox LIVE records. This included our largest sign-up of new members to Xbox LIVE in our 5 year history and just yesterday you broke the record for the single biggest day of concurrent members ever on the service.
As a result of this massive increase in usage we know that some of you experienced intermittent Xbox LIVE issues over the holiday break. While the service was not completely offline at any given time, we are disappointed in our performance. I would like to take this moment to thank you each and every one of you for your patience and understanding as our team has worked around the clock to return the service to a stable state.
At the same time we would like to offer a token of our appreciation to all of you in celebration of record success for the service. And as a thank you for your loyalty during this holiday period, we will be offering all of our Xbox LIVE members around the world access to a full Xbox LIVE Arcade game that will be available to download free of charge. In the coming weeks we will be sharing the specific details of this offer with you.
Thank you again for helping make Xbox LIVE everything that it is today!
Sincerely,
Marc Whitten
General Manager, Xbox LIVE
Gamertag: Notwen - inactive, on 01/04/2008, -1/+19I have been using XBL since it came out, and this is the first time I ever remember a problem like this.
They must have gained a TON of new members this season, more than they were expecting. - giveer, on 01/04/2008, -2/+19If I had patients, I could probably afford some of these lovely gaming consoles. [goes back to his snes]
- HolyChimp, on 01/04/2008, -0/+16You need a storage device to use Live... So to that would be a start.
- xxgigavirusxx, on 01/04/2008, -2/+16Dont get your hopes up
Im gonna say its gonna be Pac Man - Rockmaninoff, on 01/04/2008, -0/+14Agreed on Carcassonne; I've only played it a few times, but it's great.
Aegis Wing, which has always been a free Arcade game, is also an incredibly fun game. I highly recommend a download! - EmeraldFalcon, on 01/04/2008, -9/+22I work at Xbox customer support, and this is seriously getting ridiculous. It's video games, I'm a hardcore gamer myself, but when LIVE is down, I play Crackdown or Oblivion. Jesus, learn to live without your 2 online games. Yes, it's not cool to have the service down, but things happen. Microsoft has always openly offered Xbox LIVE as an "as-is" service. (Section 16 of the ToS.)
- terminalpariah, on 01/04/2008, -4/+17Huh, I figured they'd just give all the Gold members a one month extension. It makes sense, and it's probably cheaper for them.
- Entheoddity, on 01/04/2008, -2/+15PS3 owner eh? I never would have guessed.
- virtualball, on 01/04/2008, -7/+18Seriously? Your video game didn't work for ~1 week and you're getting a free game because of it and you're pissed? I don't really see the logic in that, was you life hurt because of this? Maybe it's because I'm not a gamer, but it seems to be a little ridiculous...
- DemonSpawn77, on 01/04/2008, -3/+14Not getting to play Call of Duty 4 for a few days was a little painful, but this is a nice gesture. See, soulless multi-billion dollar companies have a heart too. Thanks, Microsoft.
- needid07, on 01/04/2008, -0/+11I smell a PS3 fan boy flaming.....
- boombye, on 01/04/2008, -3/+14God this guy is boring too, digging him down.
- TheWorm, on 01/04/2008, -3/+13There's a small difference between a heart and a PR department.
- Alphonze, on 01/04/2008, -1/+11actually the pac-man championship edition on xbl arcade is supposed to be really good. one of the best xbla games i hear...
- deadbaby, on 01/04/2008, -1/+11So there is hope for a 1080P remake of the Atari 2600 E.T. game?
- xjeffx, on 01/04/2008, -1/+11you bad grammar.
- boombye, on 01/04/2008, -1/+11the memory card you use to get online.
- ahatter, on 01/04/2008, -0/+9simple but fun yes but also the most owned title on XBLA so if they gave that out it would be stupid.
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -0/+9So, if you don't believe their excuse, does that mean you think they did it ON PURPOSE?
- sp1r1t, on 01/04/2008, -0/+9Aegis Wing was free long before this article.
- MisterNetHead, on 01/04/2008, -2/+11Are you and your 1.3 million buddies having fun? No, kinda lonely you say?
- Gryphon, on 01/04/2008, -2/+11Agreed. People seem expect the service to have unlimited resources.
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -7/+16Why would they give a ***** about Silver Members? It's not like they paid anything in the first place to be compensated for...
- zzz@tkz, on 01/04/2008, -0/+8No, RTFA, they haven't announced it yet.
- Jak08, on 01/04/2008, -0/+7uhm, well not completely true as if you do have a year subscription and say someone gets you a 3 month xbl card or something similar you can activate it on that account and it just pushes the billing cycle back that amount of time.
- MisterNetHead, on 01/04/2008, -0/+7https://twitter.com/majornelson/statuses/560887012
"That free Arcade title is for BOTH Gold and Silver members." - via Major Nelson's Twitter - DarkPhoen1x, on 01/04/2008, -1/+8um...I think your 360 probably froze because you typed something like that on it. I mean damn, these things can take only so much.
- Easyoffbam, on 01/04/2008, -0/+7Damn! Already have that.
