- VeroAvitar, on 02/21/2008, -4/+117As stated I'm sure there will be tons of crap to sift through and gems will exist..but as long as there is a way to promote those gems to the top this is an excellent addition to the xbox live marketplace..
now if only they didn't charge 200 bucks for a 120 gb hard drive expansion...... - chris9902, on 02/21/2008, -1/+63That's the spirit. Because nobody new should be allowed to make games. Some 14yr old kid has to make something that matches up to Gears of War or he's a ***** failure and should be banned for ever touching a computer.
- LittleDas, on 02/21/2008, -4/+49This is my game

I hereby pledge to port it to XNA and finish it as a show of support. - DRINKxREDxBULL, on 02/21/2008, -3/+35This plan and the XNA studio havs been around since before the Wii went on pre sale. You think they announced this yesterday and suddenly there 7 brand new games on it?
- frogman54, on 02/21/2008, -2/+32This is terrific. I'm going to make a game called ***** and Bunnies. Evil mutant bunnies have taken over the world and you have to fight them with radioactive supertits that shoot laser beams out of the nipples. Where do I sign up?
- logicalnoise, on 02/21/2008, -1/+287 games are already up and each one is pretty good for user creations, "The dishwasher" is a great 2d brawler that could easily be worth 400 MSPs.
- aldenhg, on 02/21/2008, -1/+28In the spirit of the article, I'll respond in BASIC.
10 FIND A WAY TO GET AN EMULATOR PAST MICROSOFT
20 MICROSOFT PATCHES HOLE
30 GOTO 10 - LittleDas, on 02/21/2008, -3/+30This is fantastic.
I mean, sure there are gonna be craploads of ***** games, but the ability for anyone to write a game and get it distributed for them, that's just fantastic. - Newedge14, on 02/21/2008, -2/+27Community Arcade, The Kongregate of console gaming!
- nbcaffeine, on 02/21/2008, -4/+28too bad every cheapskate jerk complains about having to pay $5/mo
- inactive, on 02/21/2008, -2/+23Counter point: Microsoft made creators club free yesterday for students.
Also, I expect there will be a tremendous amount of crap. However there is a tremendous amout of crap on youtube to sift through as well. However you do get a lot of gems. - nygrissplz, on 02/21/2008, -7/+27This is why I love my Xbox.
- logicalnoise, on 02/21/2008, -0/+18the service is now free to students.
- inactive, on 02/21/2008, -8/+25They do, $99 a year
- edge10, on 02/21/2008, -0/+16You can do PC development for free (I am using it now for free). It is only when you want to take it to the 360 that you have to pay.
- Endar, on 02/21/2008, -0/+15The point of this is to give upcoming game developers the chance to show off their work, not to create the next blockbuster game.
- chedabob, on 02/21/2008, -0/+14If you're a student though, you can get it for free through DreamSpark.
- strictnein, on 02/21/2008, -2/+15"I was starting to worry that my 360 was a bad investment when I got the 3 red lights only 24 hours after buying it and the place where I purchased it didn't carry them anymore"
Did you buy it from a guy in an alley? - MillionsLivio, on 02/21/2008, -0/+13Ever been to Kongregate? There are tons of great quality independently developed games there.
- logicalnoise, on 02/21/2008, -1/+14not for xbox live silver and not for access to these game previews. or even teh XNA club if you're a student.
- xptoast, on 02/21/2008, -3/+15I am surprised they are letting people use their proprietary machine and service to host game playing. This is a large step for Microsoft from being so close sourced. Now we can have some real fun.
- contradictator, on 02/21/2008, -0/+11I wonder if this extends to apps too. A big selling-point for the original Xbox was homebrew software. This is good step, but wouldn't it be nice if they opened the door to stuff like browsers, chat clients, emulators (I know it's a stretch, but that's one thing I miss from the 360's predecessor).
- MrLazySmurf, on 02/21/2008, -3/+14The sky is the limit...
- BackEnThaWomb, on 02/21/2008, -0/+11LIVE has a better service..beat that
- Christbait, on 02/21/2008, -3/+14I just played The Dishwasher and it was freaking amazing, high quality stuff, there are some seriously talented homebrew devs out there. I'd like to join in with making games, but I don't agree with paying £40-70 for only a year's subscription (if we still have to pay?), it would probably take me a year to fully learn my ways around it.
- RiPPn, on 02/21/2008, -1/+11You only have to pay if you want to play online, every other aspect of Xbox Live is free.
- brandf, on 02/21/2008, -2/+12How exactly is it dead? my 360 plays HD GAMES...I know Sony isn't familiar with a games console playing games, but that's what the xbox is all about.
- mal1964, on 02/21/2008, -1/+10It's a great idea.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 02/21/2008, -0/+9MS didn't give a damn about HD-DVD or Blu-Ray,the death of HD-DVD will mean nothing to them, most 360 owners did not buy the addon and MS can just as easily release a Blu-Ray addon.
- sputza, on 02/21/2008, -6/+14Its nice to see one Microsoft devision that thinks outside the box.
- roosterjm2k2, on 02/21/2008, -0/+8Nah...
XNA is a very stripped down DirectX library...network functions are almost exclusively avaiable for multiplayer stuff on specific ports and protocols. Even in that, its limited. You cannot, for example, make halo3 in XNA...you don't have that much control of the rendering and such...
That said, XNA is awesome. It's great for learning the "theories" of game development, while handling alot of the mundane stuff...like, since all xbox controllers are standard, you can literally just call the controller class for controller 1 and see if a button is pushed.... rendering is quite easy, as is camera handling.... It basically takes all of the "boring" stuff that most develpers write once and reuse, and comes with it built in....thus letting you devote all of your work to the game logic.. - BearinG, on 02/21/2008, -0/+8Yep same here, I download all setup kits, SDK etc.. and its all free.. you essentially only pay 99$ for the license to put it on the 360..
You have everything you need for free to make games for windows. - smoger, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7this IS news in that the games are now available to every Live member.
- HolyMan28, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7Plus the whole $200 cheaper system thing.
- KrazyKoala, on 02/21/2008, -1/+8Someone make LASER CATS!
- ilmmad, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7Yeah, because Xbox is going downhill after the death of HD-DVD. They never depended on it, they only backed it. Unlike the PlayStation, the drive is:
-Not integrated
-Not required
Microsoft has been talking about this for at least a year; I remember being excited for this back in early 2007. The thing is, I don't see Microsoft needing to "fend-off" Sony for a good long time, because the 360 is by far the most ubiquitous next gen console that uses a standard gamepad. In my school, for every person I know with a PS3 I know 5 people with a 360. - inactive, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6Considering what most game companies pay to license and publish games, $99 is a bargain...
- rickdmer, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6If you aren't on their list of schools you can get approved by going through Journey Ed.
- Rock3tman, on 02/21/2008, -1/+7Fantastic comment. Fantastic.
- brandf, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6it sounded like that was only because they're not rolling it out until next fall. This is just a time limited preview.
- davidwasman, on 02/21/2008, -4/+10Bury me above this. I left the wrong comment on the wrong story.
My bad
(if only Digg allowed me to delete it) - PhantomJM, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6Good stuff in there. Pity that they're going with a time limited trial instead of the standard XBLA demo model.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 02/21/2008, -0/+6Actually, yes there is. So far MS hasen't done anything about it on live but you never know if they will some day, if this even can be detected.
Basically, it involves either taking an already exsisting case, or making your own case/adapter, plugging in your own 2.5 inch sata drive, then writing either the 20gig or 120gig drive's key onto it.
Since the drive's size is encoded into the key that means you can only create a 20 or 120 gig drive though, and of course the drive has to be at least as big as the key.
The 20 gig key will make the 360 think any drive 20 gigs or larger is an official 20 gig drive, and same with the 120 gig key on a drive that is 120+ gigs.
I saw hundreds of 120 gig drives fle sale on ebay from hong kong that did not come with any packaging or the transfer cable/disk. Obviously these used the hack and were trying to make a cheap buck. - turpenine, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5see, that is just blatantly offensive,
- greenlight2001, on 02/21/2008, -1/+6"Take it from me."
End the auction and I'll come pick it up. - estvir, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5No, we're talking about ANYONE using XNA which is on the PC.
Stop being such a loser and think about what you just said. - protogenxl, on 02/21/2008, -0/+5Hey Stephen Taylor move your ass and port Plasma Pong.
- coheedcollapse, on 02/21/2008, -0/+5The jelly car demo he played is a pretty fun game, but I hope they won't be charging because you can play the whole game for free here: http://jellocar.en.softonic.com/ . I don't know if the XBL one is a clone, or by the same guys.
- smoger, on 02/21/2008, -1/+6you're right. they definitely threw this together in the past 3 days in a reaction to Toshibas announcement that they were cutting hd-dvd support
- Unremarkable, on 02/21/2008, -1/+6Yeah, now if only Microsoft lets people write and distribute custom software for their other platforms.. Oh wait.
