Microsoft and Nintendo Comment on the PS3 Delay
worthplaying.com — Microsoft: "We know how challenging it is to pull off a global launch, particularly with unproven technology, so it's not surprising that Sony has backed away from their previously announced launch plans." Nintendo's comment isn't as interesting--just the same standard line.

"Wii is on track to ship in Q4, Nintendo plans to ship 6 million systems to retailers around the world between its launch in the fourth quarter of 2006 and the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2007."
in other words they're saying they're succeding where sony is failing.- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -3/+54I love how Nintendo has every reason to gloat, but is taking the high road and just focusing on what they are going to be doing, not on what everyone else is (or isn't) going to do. Shows extreme confidence in their product.
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28All I can say is OUCH. Sony got slammed by both Nintendo and MS.
It's the Blu-Ray that's ***** Sony and the PS3. If they just scrap the drive, they'd reduce the price and technical issues and could then pump the thing out quickly. - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -18/+6indeed, nintendo is essentially saying that they're doing exactly what sony said they would do, namely have 6 million units on shelves by december 31st. so it seems there will be 6 million wii consoles in the wild to about a million (if that) many ps3 consoles.
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16carpespasm: Nintendo is claiming 6 million by the end of the fiscal year in March.
- EliasAlucard, on 10/12/2007, -24/+2Sony is failing? With exclusive games like Devil May Cry 4, Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid 4, Tekken 6 and Virtua Fighter 5, how can Sony fail? The PS1 and PS2 have together sold over 200 million consoles, I don't see how Sony will screw it up this time.
- seandaly, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3Jesus, I swore I read yesterday that the launch delay was limited to Europe and was due to mass production issues with the Blue-ray laser.
Why are we all treating this as though the entire launch is delayed? Is it? Did I miss something? - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14ahh, i'm mistaken, please take note and digg down if nessisary. i still think the point is mostly valid though, and if anything might show that sony saying 6 million units made in a few months is crazy compared with the competition making that many in twice as much time.
sorry for the mistake. - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3the delay is to all pal countries, now while its good to see that americans are starting to realise that there is a world outside of their borders, there are more places then canada and europe, and more places affected (most of the world I think). I beleive the only places not affected actually are america and japan, however there will only be 500,000 between the 2 (400 to us, 100 to japan) and at that time, the 360 will be cheaper with a large library, the wii will be old news and common, and much cheaper witha large library, and the wii will apparently have 6,000,000 boxes out by the time the ps3 finally leaves america (and japan). oh and dont forget their dwindling launch range (no longer are the days where sony is better because "it has more games" im referring to next gen here)
- jhuynh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Murdats,
I'm sure the ps3 will come out in Canada the same time it comes out in the US since we use NTSC also. Although we will probably have less units allocated here, it will still have an impact on how many systems are available at launch in all 3 countries meaning even less systems allocated to US and Japan. In either case i don't see ps3 succeeding unless they pull off a miracle. - McZiggz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2actually - its the cell processor thats holding them up. For every two that are made, one probably doesn't work. Sony has to east that cost. It makes cost high for them (and the consumer) and production slow due to wasted materials/time.
gg. - stappawho, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5Sony is having 500k at LAUNCH. Why do people keep comparing that to the 6 million nintendo says they'll have produced by MARCH TWO THOUSAND AND SEVEN?
It's not like Nintendo is launching with 6 million. - stappawho, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1@carpespasm
"indeed, nintendo is essentially saying that they're doing exactly what sony said they would do, namely have 6 million units on shelves by december 31st"
You know something is up when a dumbass comment like that is dugg up.
It's 6 million by the end of March 07, not by december 31st.
Moron.

kickin' 'em while there down. Not only could be he a smug git about there launch but he had a pop at blu-ray. nicely done.- MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25What the hell is your problem? He's right. It IS unproven technology.
- KrocCamen, on 10/12/2007, -26/+2So is HD-DVD
Blade of straw, meet Rafter. - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13I was agreeing with him not defending SONY. :S
- biffsputnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28@ KrocCamen
"So is HD-DVD
Blade of straw, meet Rafter."
Umm yeah, and you'll notice Microsoft wisely decided not to integrate HD-DVD into their console, as initially planned. Not quite the same thing. More along the lines of Catastrophic Business Decision, meet The Way it Should Have Been Done. - MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Sorry about that. It's really hard to tell if you're being a jerk, or congratulating him. Damn you, text.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4a little from column A, a little from column B.
- LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18In summary: "If you have $600 in your pocket this Christmas, it'll be tempting to get the combo platter -- Xbox 360 and Wii."
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Xbox360+HD-DVD+HDMI=$700
sucks, but I dont see the difference between the 360 and PS3 in price, except its fun to bash Sony, and MS bashing is only fun when it comes to computers, and not consoles.
I say, just get the Wii, and maybe, IF you have the money, and DONT want a HDDVD player, get the 360. Im sure many people will get the HD-DVD addon.... - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4yes, but by christmas, or ps3 launch its very likely the 360 price cut will have happened thus what you listed above < $700
and it wouldnt be so fun to bash sony if they didnt make it so easy - DaveV, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5hehe... no. My combo platter will be Wii for me, Wii for my nephews. Maybe a Wii for each.
Then, it will once again be me vs. them. - EComni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@foolfromhell
Great, another "But the 360+HD-DVD is the same price as the PS3" comment made by someone claiming to be "enlightened" above fanboyism.
Okay, couple of issues:
One: In the general population, who will really care about high-def DVDs? Really. I'd wager (with numbers pulled straight out my ass) that maybe half the people with PS3s/360s will actually have HDTVs, and probably no more than 30% of those people will actually give a ***** about high-def DVDs.
Two (and more important): How is it good in any way for the customers if they are stuck buying functionality, high-priced functionality, that they didn't ask for? If a few people want to pay for a HD-DVD 360, that's their damned prerogative. But for the other MAJORITY of people that don't give a damn, I'm very thankful that Microsoft didn't push HD-DVD-integrated 360s on us for $500-600 a pop in their global market-domination scheme.
But please, continue to inform all the ignorant people how $400 is actually the same price as $600 because of the added cost of OPTIONAL things that few want. The logic is flawless, and it will continue to be flawless everytime a "non-fanboy" brings that up as a strike against the 360.
"'Cuz I mean, really, a standard DVD player is no better in price than a HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player, since you have to buy HD-DVD/Blu-Ray functionality for the standard DVD player." - mrFREEZE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1'Xbox360+HD-DVD+HDMI=$700"
Don't have either... don't want either. Good luck trying to rip out the PS3's Blu-ray drive at Best Buy and trying to convice them to give you a $150 discount if you don't need it/don't want it like most people ATM.
"...continue to inform all the ignorant people how $400 is actually the same price as $600 because of the added cost of OPTIONAL things that few want"
Bears repeating.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Xbox360+HD-DVD+HDMI=$700
- LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14I'm just astonished at how much credit Nintendo is actually giving Sony.
"...there may be a small number of people who buy a 360 instead of a PS3."
Are they serious? I don't know ANYONE who plans on actually buying a PS3.- 0101010, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I actually know a lot of people i know cant wait for the thing to come out.
- jhuynh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Nintendo didn't say that...... read the article again....
- sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Dude, just because you DON'T have any friend;)
- gameboyhippo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't think they were saying that. I think they were saying that of the people who were origionally going to buy the Sony PS3, those who are unable to get one this fall might be tempted to get an XBox 360 instead. Since it is highly unlikly for someone this early in the game to have both the 360 and the PS3, Sony will lose that customer more/less permenantly.
This is what is so powerful with Nintendo's buisness strategy. By reaching out to a different audience and pushing their console to current gamers as an alternative console, they are immune to the one console per household effect. People will be happy to have a 360 and a Wii, a PS3 and a Wii, or just a Wii. In the end Nintendo makes a lot of money. Hopefully when they are on top again, they will remember their time at not being the winner and keep up the competition. - acurism, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Guess you don't get out much, I know lots of people who plan on buying it.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know lots of people who want to buy PS3. But, they also have no idea about the shortages, shortcomings, difficulties of programming for the Cell or the Blu-Ray diodes, or even the announced price! All they know is that it's a PlayStation product with a 3 at the end of it.
I guess they'll be surprised when they walk into EB or Gamestop with their saved-up $299.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2The two so-called statements from Microsoft and Nintendo aren't even in quotes and aren't attributed to anybody. Yet, a statement from somebody else entirely is in quotes, and attributed..
As far as I can tell, the so called statements 'from' Nintendo and Microsoft are completely fabricated.
The Microsoft one in particular seems totally fake. What company would admit that it can relate to launching unproven hardware?
And 160 games? Uhm.. what? Including the 25 or so Xbox live Arcade games, it doesn't have more then 80 games right now. When is that going to suddenly double exactly?- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Well, I guess I can take back what I said to some extent. Note these other sources:
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2006/09/sony_delay_reac.html
http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/06-09-2006-3556.html
MercuryNews has the quote as "A spokeswoman for Microsoft said, "We know how challenging it is to pull off a global launch, particularly with unproven technology, so it's not surprising that Sony has backed away from their previously announced launch plans. Europe remains a priority for us.''
pro-g has the quote as "We know how challenging it is to pull off a global launch, so it's not surprising that Sony has backed away from their previously announced launch plan due to the unproven technology they are trying to pack in to their console," said Lewis.
The 2nd quote to me seems much more likely. And this story basically takes a jumble of these quotes and mixes them together in a way that isn't a quote at all. - jazzyy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1good points vhold .. it really is a bit odd the way MS readily relates to releasing unproven technology .. maybe finally coming clean after many launch fiascos?? anybody's guess
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Well, I guess I can take back what I said to some extent. Note these other sources:
- hungarianhc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I like how Nintendo stays classy and doesn't trash its opponent, even if you know they're throwing a party behind close doors. They're great with their PR... too bad we can't say the same for marketing. Hopefully they figure that out soon.
As far as MS, haha gotta love the MS/Sony war.- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6So, you're saying that MS is in some PR war with Sony.. since when ? I'm pretty sure the only people who are saying stupid things is Sony or even if MS does it's 1 every year, instead of 7 every month from Sony executives.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9yeah I havent seen MS bag anyone, I have however watched companies like sony and apple employ the marketing method of laughing and gloating over every foible your oppenent has, but not MS yet
- skywake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10next week Sony will be saying that because of "production problems" they will be scraping the PS3 and just be releacing Blu-Ray players in big rounded cases......
I think that Sony is shaking in their boots now..... - Slybri, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Sony dug themselves a deep hole. This holiday we get to watch them lie down in it and then slowly claw their way out over the next few years or die. FUN! Man I can't wait to read all the horror stories of how screwed up the launch system is. Software bugs, overheating, crashes, overpriced games with last gen graphics. Oh it's gonna be a hoot!
This is revenge for tricking me into buying a PSP! - unre4l, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8We all know inside they want to say something far more satisfying...
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15i was thinking something along the lines of "nyah nyah! we told ya so!!! losers, omg, you're like "yeah well we'll make a bajillion ps3s and everyone'll want to pay 600 dollars and who wants a stupid little 200 dollar machine." and then we're like "ohh yeah? well we bet you can't even make enough of them to even sell to your fanboys" and you're like "uhuh!" and we're like "nuh-uh".
and then sony took its marbles and went home.
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8not having enough of a console on launch day i think is always their plan if im honest.. it creates a lot of hype, as everyone tries to get their hands on the new console!
then you hear on the news that its christmas, and that sonys new console the ps3 is already sold out, and that prices at independant auctions are up in the £2000 mark etc.
this is bad for consumers, but will actually create a possitive for Sony.. probably their first one since E3.
Having said that, its the Wii60 for me.. or maybe even just the Wii. That all depends on Microsoft, so far there is very little on the 360 I want.- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7dead rising is pretty awesome, i almost want to get a 360 just to play that without playing it at my buddy's
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5maybe, not my kinda game though im afraid.
thats why im such a big nintendo fan, I like my old school and quirky games as opposed to survival horror, fps or most rpgs.
realism is a big issue for me, but not in the way it is for most. I actively try to avoid realistic games. I like exadurated physics, impossible worlds and experiences.. anything else is too close to life to be fun.
oh, but in the case of fps, i find that the gameplay is just too limited.. run, shoot, dodge, hide, shoot.. lather, rince, repeat.
Metroid Prime i didnt like the look of at first, but then i discovered that there was so much more depth to it than something like halo. - Inverno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I don't think Sony's going to be able to sell out in Europe this xmas... I'm not sure how not shipping any consoles for PAL televisions is going to help them, marketing-wise.
Do alot of Euro-gamers have NTSC tvs? If so I could see the news saying, 'Crazed parents spend asstons of cash to import a PS3!' - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4sony's already announced that they're pushing the euro release back to spring 07
- lolage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Do alot of Euro-gamers have NTSC tvs?" - Ill forgo responding with sarcasm and just say yessir, NTSC capable anyway.
- Fentekreel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1champion its nothing like the survival horror that resident evil is like.....take gta style camrea and mix in some rpg elements and a quirky way to stay alive and your looking at the start of dead rising....
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4actually i'd agree with you about exagerated physics and all being fun, which is the reason i like dead rising. when i first saw it i assumed it was going to be an uncreative dawn of the dead rip off, but the main character can do so much (like lift park benches and swing them through 5 or 6 zombies in a swing), and the environment is so complete that i think it's a beautiful mix of realism with a very fun mix of the unreal such as being able to drink a jug of orange juice in about 3 seconds to restore almost all your health after being zombie mauled. and you're never at a lack of something to attack with like with some survival games like RE.
(sorry to babble about it, i really like the game, and thought it was really well done. - championchap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmm, if you say so.. ill have to give it a more serious look i guess, i really do doubt it will be for me though
but im all up for being proven wrong when it comes to that
- lowridah, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4standard textbook responses.
- boohoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3champion, i just dont get how you and others can stomach playing the same tired characters over and over. no offense intended... because I realize there's alot of you that like mario and metroid. But jeez, I just can't imagine playing a 7th (or is it 20th) mario game.
- lolage, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Boohoo, perhaps you should stop crying. You dare comment on the originality of Nintendo? Sorry, I seem to have lost count of which street fighter game you're on. MS and Nintendo are the only ones bringing originality. Sony with the PS2 and predictably with the PS3(if it ever gets released. duke nukem forever syndrome) churned out obscene amounts of repetitive, low quality games and you are questioning the creativeness of others? Bah. I need a drink or something else to drown out these people.
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ever played a realistic racing game?
god.. how can you stand to drive those same/slightly upgraded cars in every game? its rediculous!
same principle, you control mario, but in every game the world is expanded.. the marios of today are nothing like the marios of old.. of course if it was basically the same game id get bored and not play ti anymore, but they arent are they? Now whats hard to understand about that?
- asurroca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The PS3 launch gets more hillarious every day. Whether the quotes were real or not, they're pretty damn funny.
Call me an idiot, but it just now dawned on me that with the Euro launch pushed back, that gives Microsoft even more of an edge in that market.- marvin69, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1idiot.

They are just mad they didn't think of what the others did first and now they have to copy them and spin it like they are so much better yet they can't even release a decent OS or gaming system. - Shironeko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Little video I made:
