- KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -6/+126Halo Kart Racing, here we come!!
- proxima, on 10/10/2007, -5/+94Before the trolls come, this is actually quite a good financial decision for both companies. MS will get the publishing rights most likely for Bungie's games, while Bungie will get more creative freedom.
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -17/+103Bungie has "finished the fight" and now they are out of there.
It does make you wonder. First Epic, then PGR team Bizarre Creations, now Bungie. What is going on with Microsoft and their developer relationships? - djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -4/+74Two words: Marathon Revival. Make it happen, Bungie.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -18/+70Oh god, here come all the "OMG! Halo 3/4 on the PS3!" topics on messageboards everywhere, completely ignoring the fact that MS owns the Halo franchise, not Bungie, and that MS still has control over what Bungie can publish....
Its already started on GameFaqs.
Funny how these PS3 fanboys were calling Halo 3 an overrated piece of trash yesterday, then half an hour ago praising it when it comes out on the PS3, and now are bashing it again when they learned there is zero chance of it happening. - bearda, on 10/10/2007, -10/+56If Microsoft is going to continue to publish their games, I doubt it.
- logicalnoise, on 10/10/2007, -7/+46Epic still supports Microsft platforms, Bizare creations hasn't ruled out 360 titles, and bungie is stillg oingt o be published by Microsoft
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -22/+60Good for them, now they can spread their goodness onto other consoles.
- naterpoke, on 10/10/2007, -18/+52USE THE RIGHT BY YOU ***** MORON
- proxima, on 10/10/2007, -1/+33MS has made it clear that it no longer intends to keep developer support through buying out companies, as it hasn't panned out well in the past (Rare, for example). I think they are going to continue to do what they do best now, which is forge business partnerships with 2nd/3rd party developers and publishers to secure exclusives.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+35Or Master Chief in Brawl
- Hipple, on 10/10/2007, -1/+33And we get to see Bungie make something besides Halo games for the rest of their days. This is good news.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31Leave it to a Digg user to misspell a two letter word.
- strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -4/+34From the press release: "Bungie, LLC, in which Microsoft will hold a minority equity interest. As part of this transaction, Bungie and Microsoft have forged a deep and long-term development and publishing relationship"
Read "deep and long-term" as: "No f@cking PS3 games" - djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29Because lord knows third-party Wii titles are just oozing quality right now.
- proxima, on 10/10/2007, -5/+32In addition, the Halo franchise wont go anywhere, as MS will most likely contract out the work to Bungie in the future. In actuality I bet this will strengthen the relationship b/w the two, as MS allowed Bungie to go back to its independence out of respect, something which the company could have stopped. Seems like a mutually beneficial relationship to me.
- TheZorch, on 10/10/2007, -8/+34Maybe we'll get a version of Halo 2 for the PC that doesn't require installing that lumbering monster called Vista.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+33"Anybody remember Oni?" - As a matter in fact I do, I remember it receiving "Sleeper Hit of the Show" when it was first shown at E3 running on a PC. It was all every journalist was talking about after the show.
It was like UT meets a fighting game, you had weapons and when you ran out of ammo you could fight hand-to-hand with moves right our of Virtua Fighter. It was supposed to be an online multiplayer PC game. I played it, it was a blast!
So what happened? Sony wanted it on the PS2 as a single player game instead, and likely paid dearly to get it. Hence the pure crapage you know today. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24Master Chief, Solid Snake, and Samus. The ultimate fanboy showdown....all on one console. I'd ***** buy that game in a second.
- adml_shake, on 10/10/2007, -6/+27Come on Halo DS!!
- wolfofwar, on 10/10/2007, -5/+26How about Master Chef, the microsoft cooking mama ripoff?
Better Then Mama! - manifestdata, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Dude, wrong article. This article is about Bungie and Microsoft, not Avril Lavigne's new makeup line. Thanks for letting us know though.
- aspec, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Realistically, it's probably easier to subsidize their franchises and determine the cost/effectiveness of each of the companies. It gives the companies more initiative to do their own thing, knowing Microsoft won't be there everyday and it's probably better for Microsoft to just ditch their remaining interest in a company if they see a company not producing the types of revenues they expect.
- kjk437, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21No, it was subliminal messaging. "BUY MICROSOFT."
smoke - jonnyeh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19They didn't buy them to keep it from being released on the Mac (it eventually was anyways). MS bought them because they saw an early build and thought "This would make a great launch game for codename xbox". They were right.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18Microsoft got what they wanted out of the relationship, which was to deliver the three hottest console games as XBox exclusives.
Without the first Halo game as an XBox-only title, would the XBox division have survived this long?
The XBox 360 is now firmly establish as the top gaming console for the hardcore gamers, and there are other A-list exclusives that have driven the platform (Gears of War, Bioshock, et al.).
Given that this news is close on the heels of the ginormous release of Halo 3, it makes you think that Bungie was the one who pushed for this. - ngnboone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Awesome. It's time for Bungie to make Myth 3
- fantasticFlan, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19I doubt they'll have trouble finding another publisher, if they want.
- Elranzer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14See: Nintendo and Rare
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/10/2007, -5/+19Oh yeah, this is good for mac owners as well. Bungie traditionally shares the love with apple.
- JEAH, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Oni wasn't made by the core Bungie team.
- guitarpro411, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Oni was a half developed hand me down from another publisher.
- allisonaxe, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19I just hope bungie doesn't go back to being a mac developer. the best thing they ever did to get some exposure was leave a platform that nobody games on.
- beathermit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13a Master Chief party franchise...
- Divals, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15YES OH GOD YES
- atmablue, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15"What is going on with Microsoft and their developer relationships?"
Developers! Developers! Developers! - terminalpariah, on 10/10/2007, -13/+24My favourite features of Halo (Xbox Live/matchmaking, and co-op) were included at the insistence of Microsoft and used Microsoft technologies. The gameplay of Halo is so well understood that I'm sure MS could pick one of many developers and get a solid Halo 4 made.
- djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12No kidding. If Gears of War can run on XP, why can't Halo 2?
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15“This exciting evolution of our relationship with Microsoft will enable us to expand both creatively and organizationally in our mission to create world-class games,” said Harold Ryan, studio head for Bungie. “We will continue to develop with our primary focus on Microsoft® platforms; we greatly value our mutually prosperous relationship with our publisher, Microsoft Game Studios; and we look forward to continuing that affiliation through ‘Halo’ and beyond.”
Good news or bad news for Pc and xbox gamers. While it would be nice to see bungie progress from the halo franchise, bungie hasn't always made stellar games. Anybody remember Oni? No? Exactly. - whatthefu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Bungie made one hugely popular franchise and another relatively popular one. That doesn't guarantee success, though.
- Quix, on 10/10/2007, -8/+19"Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!" - Bungie, Oct. 5, 2007
- alexkorova, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12"Sony wanted it on the PS2 as a single player game instead"
Uhm, no, what happened was that Bungie was bought by Microsoft, didn't have time to finish Oni so they hurried to release it as a singleplayer only game. They even had LAN multiplayer working on the PC/Mac version, I tried it and the multiplayer was really good. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12I doubt they said that. Microsoft did wonders for them, including building them a brand-new state of the art office/development building and buying them all new equipment. I think there was a video showing everything off before Halo 2 came out...
- proxima, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10While there is truth to your argument, I believe the convex is also true, to a degree. MS marketed the hell out of the Halo franchise, and more than likely made it more popular than it ever would have been on any other console (or PC/mac).
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11100% you are correct that they are making games for X360, but all at one time were nearly bonded to X360. That doesn't seem to be the case now. Epic wasn't real surprising with Unreal Tournament because Epic was already upset with Microsoft. And they tend to be pretty vocal about it. Bizarre was a surprise and 6 months ago if someone would've said Bungie. I would've said BS. It just boggles my mind.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Oni was utterly awesome. It's a shame that Take Two never bothered making it multiplayer after they got it when Bungie was bought up.
- deathweaver108, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11if it means more money... yes
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9It's a crying shame that Oni didn't have multiplayer, but other than that, it was an excellent game. I sure as hell remember it.
- atomicpoet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Sad. It seems that Microsoft does not want to do first party development anymore.
- jknevitt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I fully expect a Marathon remake as a sequel to Halo 3, with Master Chief as the main character.
