- kinseyincanada, on 10/10/2007, -65/+11so now we can see the halo franchise get beaten to death buy Microsoft!
- terminalpariah, on 10/10/2007, -13/+24My favourite features of Halo (Xbox Live/matchmaking, and co-op) were included at the insistence of Microsoft and used Microsoft technologies. The gameplay of Halo is so well understood that I'm sure MS could pick one of many developers and get a solid Halo 4 made.

- Hipple, on 10/10/2007, -1/+33And we get to see Bungie make something besides Halo games for the rest of their days. This is good news.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Marathon 4? Bungie has insisted that the two franchises are wholly separate, so I assume that Microsoft does not retain control of the Marathon universe.
"See ya starside!" - gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4Maybe MS aren't the Dicks everyone seems to think they are, they didn't have to let Bungie become more independent but who wants a slave instead of an ally. Kudos to MS for not being arrogant and litigeous in a situation where it would only stifle creativity.
Maybe that's why a lot of developers have gone over to MS.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Marathon 4? Bungie has insisted that the two franchises are wholly separate, so I assume that Microsoft does not retain control of the Marathon universe.
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -17/+103Bungie has "finished the fight" and now they are out of there.
It does make you wonder. First Epic, then PGR team Bizarre Creations, now Bungie. What is going on with Microsoft and their developer relationships?- logicalnoise, on 10/10/2007, -7/+46Epic still supports Microsft platforms, Bizare creations hasn't ruled out 360 titles, and bungie is stillg oingt o be published by Microsoft
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11100% you are correct that they are making games for X360, but all at one time were nearly bonded to X360. That doesn't seem to be the case now. Epic wasn't real surprising with Unreal Tournament because Epic was already upset with Microsoft. And they tend to be pretty vocal about it. Bizarre was a surprise and 6 months ago if someone would've said Bungie. I would've said BS. It just boggles my mind.
- asforme, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Maybe Bungie got so pissed off by MS that they will release Linux ports of Halo. Nevermind I'm daydreaming again.

- aspec, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Realistically, it's probably easier to subsidize their franchises and determine the cost/effectiveness of each of the companies. It gives the companies more initiative to do their own thing, knowing Microsoft won't be there everyday and it's probably better for Microsoft to just ditch their remaining interest in a company if they see a company not producing the types of revenues they expect.
- Elranzer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14See: Nintendo and Rare
- aspec, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Ironically, Microsoft owns Rare.
- beardedfish, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Also I think with in the corporate structure, its good to get all that cost liability off the books. By 'spinning off' these companies MS can remove a good amount of payroll and other monthly costs like rent from their accounting books.
- Elranzer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14See: Nintendo and Rare
- proxima, on 10/10/2007, -1/+33MS has made it clear that it no longer intends to keep developer support through buying out companies, as it hasn't panned out well in the past (Rare, for example). I think they are going to continue to do what they do best now, which is forge business partnerships with 2nd/3rd party developers and publishers to secure exclusives.
- atomicpoet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Sad. It seems that Microsoft does not want to do first party development anymore.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18Microsoft got what they wanted out of the relationship, which was to deliver the three hottest console games as XBox exclusives.
Without the first Halo game as an XBox-only title, would the XBox division have survived this long?
The XBox 360 is now firmly establish as the top gaming console for the hardcore gamers, and there are other A-list exclusives that have driven the platform (Gears of War, Bioshock, et al.).
Given that this news is close on the heels of the ginormous release of Halo 3, it makes you think that Bungie was the one who pushed for this.- asforme, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1As a PC gamer I am also thankful to Microsoft. While they have been slow coming most of these mainstream titles have been or will be released to the PC as well. Can't wait to finally try out Gears of War.

- DarkSamus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's time to see some Abuse 3D bungie, waited a long time!
- daridave, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4Actually, I'm expecting this has to do with portable games more than anything else. I wouldn't be surprised seing Bungie try the DS, but I don't think they "need" the PlayStation 3.
- atmablue, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15"What is going on with Microsoft and their developer relationships?"
Developers! Developers! Developers!- zoltrix, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1haha I could watch that clip on youtube everyday and it would never get old...
- blueZhift, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Well, love or hate Microsoft, now the onus is on Bungie to show that they still have what it takes to make something other than Halo. I think splitting up spreads out the risk nicely for both parties. I certainly hope we'll see more goodness from Bungie regardless of the platform.
- Menoats, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4Oh ya and Microsoft's developer relationships must be horrible. I mean its not like they took a chance in Bungie, bought them a new studio, new equipment, new location, & then spent a ***** load of money marketing the game. All that money put on the line in their belief that Bungie is a great gaming company, and will make them a killer game. Microsoft took a HUGE gamble with Bungie....and it paid off. Sony could of taken the same gamble but instead they think their consoles would just sell because it has the Playstation logo on it.
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Actually Sony has the most and biggest in-house development studios.
- KrazyA1pha, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Why are you trying to turn this into a Microsoft vs. Sony flamewar? Who said anything about Sony?
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm not, Menoats said "Microsoft took a HUGE gamble with Bungie....and it paid off. Sony could of taken the same gamble but instead they think their consoles would just sell because it has the Playstation logo on it."
I was just correcting him. How is that starting a flamewar?
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm not, Menoats said "Microsoft took a HUGE gamble with Bungie....and it paid off. Sony could of taken the same gamble but instead they think their consoles would just sell because it has the Playstation logo on it."
- l0k0, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Epic has a lot of reasons. They didn't want to charge people for the Gears of War map packs. They didn't want to make the PC version a Vista exclusive or use Windows Live Gold. Last but not least, Microsoft hated the idea of mouse and keyboard support or free cross platform play, which are two major components of UT3.
- logicalnoise, on 10/10/2007, -7/+46Epic still supports Microsft platforms, Bizare creations hasn't ruled out 360 titles, and bungie is stillg oingt o be published by Microsoft
- eyefone, on 10/10/2007, -22/+60Good for them, now they can spread their goodness onto other consoles.

- deathweaver108, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11if it means more money... yes
- LittleDas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1According the the agreement, Microsoft will continue to be their publisher for old and new IPs.
So I don't think they'll be finding a new publisher.
- fantasticFlan, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19I doubt they'll have trouble finding another publisher, if they want.
- strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -4/+34From the press release: "Bungie, LLC, in which Microsoft will hold a minority equity interest. As part of this transaction, Bungie and Microsoft have forged a deep and long-term development and publishing relationship"
Read "deep and long-term" as: "No f@cking PS3 games" - KyleGoetz, on 10/10/2007, -9/+8Originally, Halo was being developed for the Mac as well. Then MS bought them, probably to prevent this from happening (Halo wasn't even going to be an FPS until MS bought them). It'd be nice if Bungie started making games for Mac, but it probably won't happen.
- jonnyeh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19They didn't buy them to keep it from being released on the Mac (it eventually was anyways). MS bought them because they saw an early build and thought "This would make a great launch game for codename xbox". They were right.
- KyleGoetz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2It doesn't matter if it eventually was. It was released over 2 years later, and Halo 2 still hasn't been released for Mac 3 years later. Compare this with what would have been simulteneous releases of Windows and Mac like it was supposed to be.
- Elranzer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6He's right. Little-known Mac games publisher MacSoft ports and publishes previously Windows-only titles to Mac, including Microsoft's own franchises such as Age of Empires and Halo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macsoft - gr0ss, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I think it would be great if Bungie Released Halo 2 / 3 on Mac with the Microsoft Game Studios logo right at the launch or whatever it says.
- whistlerpro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1In speaking to Macworld, Brian Jarrard, franchising director at Bungie, said a return to the Mac could indeed be a possibility.
"But sure, now that we’re branching of and controlling our destiny, that puts us in a position where we could put ourselves back on the [Mac] platform definitively again," he said.
- from AppleInsider - strictnein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually, the funny thing at the time was that, although Bungie was a Mac developer, Halo was being developed on PCs.
- jonnyeh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19They didn't buy them to keep it from being released on the Mac (it eventually was anyways). MS bought them because they saw an early build and thought "This would make a great launch game for codename xbox". They were right.

- AwesomeMonster, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15“This exciting evolution of our relationship with Microsoft will enable us to expand both creatively and organizationally in our mission to create world-class games,” said Harold Ryan, studio head for Bungie. “We will continue to develop with our primary focus on Microsoft® platforms; we greatly value our mutually prosperous relationship with our publisher, Microsoft Game Studios; and we look forward to continuing that affiliation through ‘Halo’ and beyond.”
Good news or bad news for Pc and xbox gamers. While it would be nice to see bungie progress from the halo franchise, bungie hasn't always made stellar games. Anybody remember Oni? No? Exactly.- guitarpro411, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Oni was a half developed hand me down from another publisher.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4No, Bungie developed it. It was nearly complete when MS bought Bungie. Take Two had about an 18% share in Bungie, so they got Oni, polished it off, and sold it.
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/10/2007, -5/+19Oh yeah, this is good for mac owners as well. Bungie traditionally shares the love with apple.
- LaueOfficer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7"As part of this transaction, Bungie and Microsoft have forged a deep and long-term development and publishing relationship"

- JEAH, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Oni wasn't made by the core Bungie team.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9It's a crying shame that Oni didn't have multiplayer, but other than that, it was an excellent game. I sure as hell remember it.
- t.toe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Remember it? Heck, I loved Oni!
- Herbster1986, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0How about the Myth series, Myth 1 and Myth 2 are some of my favorite games of all time... Myth 3 sucked balls, why? cuz Microsoft bought the Myth franchise after Myth 2

- beathermit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13a Master Chief party franchise...
- Korexz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I'm going to guess this will be the last we see of the Halo franchise. Working on a game is much different than playing a game. I'm sure the developers are more than sick of seeing master chief and all the halo universe baddies. Imagine playing the same game, every day, for 8-10 hours, for 2 years. For some of you über nerds this isn't too much of a stretch, but then again you have no life ;)
I hope Bungie does much more than just extending the Halo franchise.- gr0ss, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Halo Wars is already being made. So it's not the last of the Halo Franchise.
- drafhk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ummm.... Final Fantasy?
- eyefone, on 10/10/2007, -3/+35Or Master Chief in Brawl
- proxima, on 10/10/2007, -5/+94Before the trolls come, this is actually quite a good financial decision for both companies. MS will get the publishing rights most likely for Bungie's games, while Bungie will get more creative freedom.
- proxima, on 10/10/2007, -5/+32In addition, the Halo franchise wont go anywhere, as MS will most likely contract out the work to Bungie in the future. In actuality I bet this will strengthen the relationship b/w the two, as MS allowed Bungie to go back to its independence out of respect, something which the company could have stopped. Seems like a mutually beneficial relationship to me.
- moush, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1a trilogy is always enough, sometimes it's even too much
- LittleDas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1It says right there in the article that according to the agreement, Microsoft will be continue to publish all Bungie games, both old and new IPs, so not even most likely.

- Prathik89, on 10/10/2007, -25/+1NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
- navster15, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Good for Bungie. It's always good to see more independent developers out there making games. I doubt they'll stray too far from the Microsoft fold, but I hope at least they have the chance to make a few off-the-wall projects. Maybe they'll go all David Jaffe on us and make only Live Arcade titles from now on. :)
- Wiinii, on 10/10/2007, -7/+33"Anybody remember Oni?" - As a matter in fact I do, I remember it receiving "Sleeper Hit of the Show" when it was first shown at E3 running on a PC. It was all every journalist was talking about after the show.
It was like UT meets a fighting game, you had weapons and when you ran out of ammo you could fight hand-to-hand with moves right our of Virtua Fighter. It was supposed to be an online multiplayer PC game. I played it, it was a blast!
So what happened? Sony wanted it on the PS2 as a single player game instead, and likely paid dearly to get it. Hence the pure crapage you know today.- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Oni was utterly awesome. It's a shame that Take Two never bothered making it multiplayer after they got it when Bungie was bought up.
- thentro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Dugg for the combos! I think some of halo's "tripod" idea comes from Oni - only dumbed down for easy use.
- alexkorova, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12"Sony wanted it on the PS2 as a single player game instead"
Uhm, no, what happened was that Bungie was bought by Microsoft, didn't have time to finish Oni so they hurried to release it as a singleplayer only game. They even had LAN multiplayer working on the PC/Mac version, I tried it and the multiplayer was really good.- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1What? There was no multiplayer in the game at all. I remember playing it on Mac/PC and wishing I could multiplayer it.
- alexkorova, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1No, they had LAN multiplayer working, but they didn't want to fix the remaining bugs and release it without multiplayer that worked well over internet.
- Wiinii, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Close enough.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1What? There was no multiplayer in the game at all. I remember playing it on Mac/PC and wishing I could multiplayer it.
- Corinthos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I remember the hype on it but never read any reviews. I ended up getting it for 3 bucks used at EB a couple years ago and still feel like i was ripped off.
- djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -4/+74Two words: Marathon Revival. Make it happen, Bungie.
- Rikushix, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10I was just thinking the same thing.

- jknevitt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I fully expect a Marathon remake as a sequel to Halo 3, with Master Chief as the main character.
- LaueOfficer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Agreed without the Master Chief main character part, but it's pretty obvious with the Halo 3 legendary ending and the connected story lines.
- l00dpr3h, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Totally looking forward to an updated Marathon for the Mac.

- AoSDFA, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1There's always been speculation (denied, of course, except in one interview by Bungie's first CEO) that Marathon and Halo are the same universe. What would be really cool is a multiplatform title that briges the two and explains the connection.
- postalblowfish7, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2please god, i want my bobs!

- TheZorch, on 10/10/2007, -8/+34Maybe we'll get a version of Halo 2 for the PC that doesn't require installing that lumbering monster called Vista.
- djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12No kidding. If Gears of War can run on XP, why can't Halo 2?
- wutname1, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1wish full thinking micro$oft still owns the rights to the halo name says so in the article
- djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Read TheZorch's comment again. He's asking for Halo 2 on another Windows OS, not another platform altogether.
- joegibes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I believe there are XP cracks available, but none that work for multiplayer.
Too bad online MP is the best part of Halo 2.- uberfr4gger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Its a shame that Halo 2 MP sucks on PC. Trust me, I'm playing Halo 2 right now on the PC and it is not worth 50 bucks, if you can find it for 20 (like I did) go for it but the game is worse than the xbox version
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -23/+15Maybe it was an attack of conscience after Bungie ***** over their core fanbase by only porting Halo 2 to Vista. Call me a Mac fanboy if you want, but I bought the Bungie games way back in the day of Marathon, Marathon 2, and the Marathon Trilogy Boxed set. I happily shelled out for Myth and Myth 2, a couple of excellent tactical RTS games that are STILL better than any RTS today in some ways. Bungie got started making games for the Mac only, and now, well, they don't seem to give a greasy ***** about the very people that got them started in the early days. Hopefully they'll actually make some Mac games again instead of sucking Microsoft's ***** for a Vista exclusive release or letting third party porting houses do ***** ports with utterly atrocious network code.
- jbmcb, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3I'm guessing the Halo 2 for vista-only is a good indicator of what's going on. There is absolutely no reason NOT to have Halo 2 run on every Windows platform that can run DirectX 9, since the game has been out for nearly three years.
Microsoft sees games as a method of selling Xboxes and operating systems. Bungie makes games because they like making games. I'm sure Bungie hates Microsoft basing all their marketing and development decisions on what puts the company in the most favorable market position. - frsrblch, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1That was a long time ago, back when Macs had games. Dark Forces, Civilization II, MOO2, Sim City 2000, WC2, F/A-18 Hornet... the list goes on.
And if you really want Halo 2 on XP, you can get it off The Pirate Bay.- Nobi-Wan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Or you can just play it on a $50 Xbox on a big screen TV.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I can't stand using analog controllers for an FPS.
- MiDri, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Trust me, halo 2 on pc with keyboard and mouse is not much better... *grumble*
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Or you can just play it on a $50 Xbox on a big screen TV.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Oh? I didn't know it had been hacked for XP. But still, no Mac port, and Macs are certainly seeing an upturn in games, and they've always had them. It may not be much, but it's there. And hell, I remember people talking about no games for Mac when Marathon was around.
- belmikey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I think you're being harsher on Bungie than is really warranted. At the moment, they're *owned* by Microsoft. Apparently they had some deal that lets them get un-owned. Not sure how that works. But leave that aside for the moment.
If Microsoft owns them, Microsoft calls the shots. If Microsoft says, "Vista isn't selling. We need help selling Vista. Only port Halo 2 to Vista," then Bungie really didn't have any choice, now, did they?
It's difficult to say if Bungie made a mistake hooking up with MS in the first place, without knowing the business reasons for the decision. It probably seemed like a good call at the time.- gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1MS made Bungie one of the most successful game companies of all time; every other company would kill to be them right now, how's that a mistake for Bungie? Microsoft recognizes they may be stifling Bungie's creativity so they give them freedom, where's the downside for Bungie?
If your a developer right now, working for MS has to look pretty good right about now. - TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Bungie bragged when they were bought up that they had full publishing rights, so I will blame them. They said they could put Halo on the PS2 under the MS buyout deal.
- gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1MS made Bungie one of the most successful game companies of all time; every other company would kill to be them right now, how's that a mistake for Bungie? - whatthefu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Bungie made one hugely popular franchise and another relatively popular one. That doesn't guarantee success, though.
- nytel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Then what does? I think their wallets can speak for themselfs...
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -18/+70Oh god, here come all the "OMG! Halo 3/4 on the PS3!" topics on messageboards everywhere, completely ignoring the fact that MS owns the Halo franchise, not Bungie, and that MS still has control over what Bungie can publish....
Its already started on GameFaqs.
Funny how these PS3 fanboys were calling Halo 3 an overrated piece of trash yesterday, then half an hour ago praising it when it comes out on the PS3, and now are bashing it again when they learned there is zero chance of it happening.- knightboat, on 10/10/2007, -15/+7You care way too much.

- Menoats, on 10/10/2007, -9/+14The PS3 is a piece of *****. I own all 3 systems and my PS3 collects dust like no other. I haven't played it in months. You could have a system thats 100 years from the future. Without the killer games its still just a piece of *****. When will people learn already its GAMES that make the system not the hardware bragging rights. Oh wait Microsoft has already learned that.
- incredibilistic, on 10/10/2007, -10/+6A fool and his money are easily parted. In your case it was spending $600 (or $500) for a system you now refer to as a toilet yam. So you didn't do any research on the system before you bought it? I mean, you read and respond to Digg news right? Did you not know that the system is still growing?
To be fair, the 360 was in the same exact place the PS3 is right now when it was released. The best looking game the system had was EA's Fight Night and it got boring after the first 20 minutes. It wasn't until late October 2006 that the 360 got its first big hit in Gears of War. Before that there were a few notable titles but nothing that screamed, "buy me for this game". The PS3 is starting to get those titles and things WILL, check that, things ARE getting better.
Why not give it away if it's so useless to you? I'm sure someone would like a Blu-Ray player with great titles like Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, Haze, and upcoming titles like GT 5, UT3, Killzone 2, MGS4, and two Final Fantasy games. Not to mention free online play that uses REAL servers, not consoles that act as servers during multi-player sessions.

- ngnboone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Awesome. It's time for Bungie to make Myth 3
- Divals, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Someone else already did. I hear it sucks. And I don't think Bungie has the rights to the Myth series any more...
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm pretty sure they retained them, along with Marathon and earlier properties, but Take Two might've gotten the rights along with Oni.
- gamerzworld, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Take Two only got the rights to Oni.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm pretty sure they retained them, along with Marathon and earlier properties, but Take Two might've gotten the rights along with Oni.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It was already made by Mumbo Jumbo, and it sucked horribly without Bungie's involvement.
- mocheeze, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As others have said, there has already been a "Myth 3", and Take 2 owns the rights anyway. I'd rather have Marathon, which is pretty much Bungie's last major license that they still own. (MS owns Halo, Take 2 owns Oni and Myth.)

- Nobi-Wan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Resident Evil 4 on the Wii was the best version of the game. The graphics weren't craptastic at all. One port that I wouldn't mind seeing on the Wii would be a MGS game...maybe MGS3 with some online multiplayer?
- B1663r, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Wow... you guys who think the wii has good graphics need to actually SEE a next gen game before you continue to make fools of yourself and claim the wii has good graphics....
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They are good. They're not "great" like the PS3 or Xbox 360, but they're not bad either. I'm not going to jump to any conclusions before the console's been out a year.
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Don't worry, you have plenty of ***** Disney Channel games and countless iterations of Mario Party to keep you satisfied. You'll never, ever run out of kiddy games that were hacked together in two weeks. Have fun!

- fani, on 10/10/2007, -10/+10Xbox is alive today thanks to Bungie and Halo. Lack of Halo or Halo-exclusivity during Xbox launch would've killed out. I guess they had some contract that said once Halo trilogy is over, Bungie can separate. Think about it - if Halo had been even on PS2 or not released only on Xbox, MS would've been done and there would've been no Xbox live or Xbox360 the way its today.
At least now, Bungie can develop for Mac like they used to before without pressure. And even for other consoles which is a good thing.- proxima, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10While there is truth to your argument, I believe the convex is also true, to a degree. MS marketed the hell out of the Halo franchise, and more than likely made it more popular than it ever would have been on any other console (or PC/mac).
- bigdoof, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Convex? Perhaps converse or inverse is more what you're looking for
- proxima, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yep, my mistake. Thanks for that.
- fani, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think the correct usage would've been "converse"
- FutureGuy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes fully agree, it was Bungie and MS that made Halo what it was, without XBox live there wouldn't be much of Halo Multiplayer which is what make Halo fun. Moreover the Mac version everyone keeps talking about was a strategy game to the best of my knowledge.
- bigdoof, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Convex? Perhaps converse or inverse is more what you're looking for

- HeatVision, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7No one likes a glory hound.
- MajorMauser, on 10/10/2007, -6/+7I don't think this will really change the XBOX exclusive thingy... I just think it will still be XBOX and PC based programs but hopefully they do some Mac stuff. Remember they WERE a MACINTOSH only Company at one time.... Back TO Mac before WII and PS3.
- aresef, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7This is better than the messy breakup I was worried about.
- colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9This is a great move for Bungie. Before the Microsoft buyout, Bungie put out tons of great games. They had IP like Pathways into Darkness, Marathon, Myth, and Oni. They even worked with other studios on lesser known games like Weekend Warrior. With Microsoft, they only worked on one thing: Halo. Splitting from Microsoft will give them the flexibility they need to become the multi-talented game developer they once were. Of course, a lot of the original people split from Bungie after Halo 1. But still, it would be great to see Bungie get back to their roots. If we're lucky, maybe they'll get back on the Mac too.
- brownr21, on 10/10/2007, -7/+4Mac? LOL.
- djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Blocked. LOL.
- brownr21, on 10/10/2007, -7/+4Mac? LOL.
- RajputSmurf, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1Sounds good to me. As a victim of the current Halo 3 "disk read error" problems I'm not convinced that customer service has been at the forefront in this relationship anyway. M$'s deep pockets are great but Bungie may need a return to their roots at this point.
- BobAlmightyX, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Apparently, people have fogotten or didn't know that bungie actually USED to be independant. They were bought by Microsoft in 2001 IIRC, specifically bought for the game Halo. I'm glad to see that they are back out on their own now. Maybe we'll see Bungie mac games?
- amrush4th, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2In the long run they know they will need to make Wii and PS3 games along with 360 games to be as successfull as they can be. I do like when a company focusus on one console however, they tend to make the most of the system and not just make a game that can be ported easy
- SSCrow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think Bungie actually has the record for success.
So I would imagine that other companies might pay attention and spend the time that Bungie does in making their games fun and accessible.
- SSCrow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think Bungie actually has the record for success.

- Quix, on 10/10/2007, -8/+19"Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!" - Bungie, Oct. 5, 2007
- itsthebrod, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12I doubt they said that. Microsoft did wonders for them, including building them a brand-new state of the art office/development building and buying them all new equipment. I think there was a video showing everything off before Halo 2 came out...
- Shaflugi, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2It was something more along the lines of "Thanks for making our company and its game incredibly popular through extreme marketing methods. We're done with you now."
- airwalke, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2Good, maybe they can get back to making Mac games now?
One can always hope. :(- brownr21, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Macs lol.
- B1663r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1presumeably, if there was a market for mac games it would already be filled, as I don't see any great exodus of game developers to the mac platform, there probably is not that much money to be had in mac games.
- l00s3r, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3Bungie wants more money that's all there is to it. They will stay a PC/Xbox/MS company. Not much of anything is likely to change.
- B1663r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Actually, it looks like Microsoft is getting rid of cost centers in order to make the xbox division profitable. As Bungie doesn't have anything coming down the pipes soon they are spinning off the property so its future financials don't weigh down on its stock. Im am sure we will see Microsoft reaccumulate these sorts of properties (the hot ones) just prior to the release of the xbox 720 (or whatever it ends up being called)
- cduquette, on 10/10/2007, -9/+4I posted this at TeamXbox's Halo forums, but I'd figure I'd post here..
I can't figure out why Microsoft is doing this. Halo 1 and 2 made the 360 what it is today. Halo 3 will make the Xbox 360 what it is. First they kill off FASA studios, then they announce they're not going to have studios in Japan, then Activision acquires Bizzare and now Bungie is going bye bye. Does this seem like an interesting series of events that could lead to something more? It seems like Microsoft is slowly phasing out their gaming sector. I'm thinking someone screwed up big time, probably Peter. The hardware failures lead to big losses and even if Halo 3 sells really well are they going to make up the $1 billion in repair costs? Also remember Microsoft is selling their console at a loss hoping to make it up in software sales. I believe they need to sell 2-3 games to break even. I hate to say this, but this seems to say that Microsoft will be getting out of the console business after this generation. If that happens I may be giving up console gaming, because I want a powerhouse machine, but I don't want a product from Sony. The Wii doesn't cut my gaming needs either. Hopefully we get more insight as to what the hell is going on in Redmond.- Yarnage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Um.. You do know that Microsoft hasn't been selling the XBox 360 at a loss for the past year or so now, right? Last I heard, which was back in April I believe, they were making about $50-$60 per console. Sony is currently the only ones selling their system at a loss.
- smookyfufu, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7You're a moron. Never post your thoughts again.
- Menoats, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Honestly, what you're hinting at is retardation. They been making profits off their systems for a year now. Microsoft isn't leaving the console industry they're pwning the ***** out of Sony. Oh and you shouldn't hate a console because a certain company's logo is on there. You're a waaay too extreme fanboy. In the end all companies just want your money, why should you make a sacred vow towards one.
- adml_shake, on 10/10/2007, -6/+27Come on Halo DS!!
- Christbait, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5This may be one of the biggest selling games of all time, however this article means nothing. It doesn't mean that these games will be out on the other consoles, because Microsoft will still be publishing anything they release and they probably won't want any other Publisher, I don't know many companies that can yield $300 Million in barely a week, for developers.
It just means Bungie are going to make other games EXCEPT Halo-related titles.- Jimbob200, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually you're wrong. In the release it says that the will continue to milk Halo. As you say, not any companies can earn 300 million on a game. Bungie recently said they had more than one team now, so they'll be developing Halo games and new IP as well.
- allisonaxe, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19I just hope bungie doesn't go back to being a mac developer. the best thing they ever did to get some exposure was leave a platform that nobody games on.
- brownr21, on 10/10/2007, -10/+1I game on macs LOL!
- erkokite, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6It would be nice if they could have games for both Mac and PC.
- Dan6963, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0No, it wouldn't, because Mac gamers love to talk all about gaming on their Mac, but actually don't end up buying any games. Silly Mac users!
- Genady, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Everyone seems focused on Halo, Marathon... You're thinking too small. Bungie is a bunch of rabidly creative people who are constrained by the lowest comon denomincator from console players. Personally I hope Bungie spreads it's wings and brings us something as invative as Marathon was in the day. They helped define the shooter. Take all that talent, break the Microsoft bonds, and give us something new, something revolutionary, something that stands on it's own without hype.

/sarcasm - QUEZILLA99, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0At least they won't be forced to rush their titles, and limited to old platforms like Halo 2. I was a huge Halo 1 fan, but like many disappointed when H2 cam out. After playing H3, I feel Bungie has saved face. This is what H2 should have been, but instead it was made into a n00b game to attract new customers for MS. Halo 2 was still fun, but it wasn't up to Bungie standards. Proof they f'ed up is that they made an update to change essential elements of the game a few months after it came out (grenade/ melee damage).
BTW, I hope they still put out a good amount of new down-loadable content.
I miss Chill-Out, Damnation, Prisoner, Rat Race, and the real Hang em High :( - ridium, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This doesn't mean much except that Bungie isn't a wholly-owned subsidiary of Microsoft. As a minority owner in Bungie, MS will still have significant influence over what games are developed and published (especially if MS retains the right to be the sole publisher).
It looks like MS is simply doing a bit of proft-taking. Bungie as a company has increased in value significantly since MS bought it. Now they want to use those profits on other projects. - rowlodge, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1peter knew...
