Microsoft adds Netflix, steals from Nintendo for Xbox 360
arstechnica.com — Microsoft landed a major win with the addition of Netflix to its online video service, but ripping off Nintendo may cost the company much face in the near future.

I guess Netflix red goes good with the red ring of death! - lrdntwnd, on 07/14/2008, -8/+5It's really too bad that Microsoft has forgotten how to innovate. It'd be great if they could come up with something original one of these days.
- estvir, on 07/14/2008, -4/+5You're a moron who cannot distinguish between innovate and to create something truly unique.
How's the Wii's online abilities coming along? How's the storage problem? And so on..
I bet back when the wheel was invented you would've tried to call out all those other people who used that idea and expanded it's use, etc.- SquareEnix, on 07/15/2008, -4/+3xbox live and the storage capabilities are just pre-existing aspects of the PC that MS just standardised on the console. they hardly innovate as much as Nintendo has.
Apple innovated and brought in something unique with the iPod and now all MS can do is just follow suite, copying almost everything Apple did, with the Zune. they're basically doing the same thing with these avatars. now they're just bringing over functions into the xbox that were already present in Windows Media Centre. - estvir, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3You're a hypocrite, you justify all the other things for other companies yet when Microsoft has done something, like bringing hard-drives to consoles, you simply dismiss it.
The iPod wasn't the first PMP and the Zune does have unique qualities. Apple also has copied MS before, for example, Spotlight, fast user switching, etc.

- ryansmith18, on 07/14/2008, -3/+6Wooo!! Netflix streaming on my couch instead of my computer chair!
- Kinsbane, on 07/14/2008, -2/+9Exactly how is it stealing if Microsoft isn't using the name "Mii"? Oh, you mean something generic that performs a function? Like a phone, right?
- prisoner24601, on 07/14/2008, -3/+4The only problem I see is that my 360 is just so loud (even without a disc in the drive) that I'm not really excited about having it on while I'm watching a movie. This idea is really great overall, but they need to rework the xbox cooling system. Given the RROD issues, I completely understand that reducing fan speed seems like it would be a problem, but it seems to me that a huge amount of the "heat load" is generated when *video games* are being played and that there must be some way to design the unit so that when only a video is being played just the mpeg decoder circuits are live and the rest of the unit is in some sort of sleep mode so the fans can throttle way down.
I don't imagine there is any way of accomplishing this with the xboxes already out, but I do think Microsoft needs to address this with the next hardware revision. In my mind, the "quiet living room test" is vital. If I can get a DVD with my Netflix account through the mail and play it in my DVD player and be unable to hear it spinning in my DVD player from my couch, then I expect a similar experience from the xbox. I'll probably buy the Roku box (because it's fanless) in the end, but the *idea* of being able to do this on my 360 is great. I just wish they'd get the noise issue handled in the next version so that a single box solution becomes more workable. - aaronadms, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2I hope Microsoft doesn't use this as an excuse to further skimp on it's own movie selection. Mainly because the HD quality of xbox movies is amazing (compared to Comcast).
I need my HD! - upin, on 07/14/2008, -6/+0This is my digg, what is up with this?
http://digg.com/microsoft/Netflix_to_be_carried_on ...- sienar, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1but your crappy Reuters link sucked... so you lose
- Tahiri, on 07/15/2008, -4/+1This is more of a copy of Home than Mii...
- sienar, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2really, everybody copies everybody. avatars like the Miis have been around in other incarnations for long time.
- Osmose1000, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2Who the ***** cares if they're just like Miis?
Think of it this way. Nintendo releases a console add-on that gives blowjobs, and Microsoft is soon to follow. Are you really going to complain about originality in this case? No, because more blowjobs is always a good thing.
