- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26Even though it seems unlikely, Microsoft's 360 would rape if they brought the console down to $299 and $199, or hell, even if it was only a tiny price drop.
I myself really want to get a 360, but being a poor college student must save up and wait. =(
It would destroy the (already slim) price advantage that the Wii has over it too. - revenge7, on 10/12/2007, -15/+33Except Twilight Princess.
- revenge7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Don't exaggerate. There are at LEAST 10 people that want a PS3.
Unfortunately, they can't afford it. - Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12$700 buys a good English tutor
- fusionFactor, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19Why do you say IMO. We know it's your opinion because you're the one saying it.
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@wjglenn, the current Xbox360's can support IPTV.
- wjglenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Not just HDMI. The revised Xbox targeted for the end of the year is also likely to support IPTV, have the HDMI port, be a quieter version, and come with the larger hard drive they also plan to release.
- killboredom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Obviously this Goldman Sachs guy knows what he's talking about..."With Sony likely delivering enough consoles to meet demand by the June quarter," he explains, "this would seem to be an appropriate time for Microsoft to move down the price curve and benefit from the elasticity of demand."
Uh...I'm sorry. Did he say "demand" in in reference to the PS3? Where the F did he do his analysis research? Certainly wasn't near the PS3 stocked shelves of any store within the US :) - MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6When there is 0 demand, It's easy to meet such a shipment.
- Kardde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'd probably pick one up if it went down $100. I've considered buying one recently, but, 1) Aside from Gears of War and Dead Rising, there's simply not many other games that grab my interest, and 2) I know a price cut is inevitable in the not too distant future, so I'd rather hold off.
As for now, the Wii is more than enough for me to enjoy some new and great games. - andydumi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I think they over shipped, they tried to meet their 10 million shipped goal, by end of 2006, and now stores have dozens in stock if not more and they wont sell, so they stopped shipping. (Circuit City near here has 83 in stock, Best Buy 56).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Nintendo, the biggest video game nazies from the 1980s, who use illegal trade practices to strangle the competition MS style"
That was under Hiroshi Yamauchi... an imperialistic business man whose previous experience included law study and military manufacturing. He also owned other businesses... including a "love hotel" and a taxi firm.
The company is now under the control of Satoru Iwata... who made games for his electronic calculator in high school, studied computer science, and worked as a game programmer in Nintendo's HAL Laboratory (of which he later became president).
Can you see how their motivations/practices might differ? - vikinghammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There aren't many FREE games for the PC that look as good as the games on the 360. Unless you consider downloading games illegally to be a benefit of the PC and a reason the 360 should be cheaper. I wouldn't.
And pointing out that they're different types of machines designed for different types of use doesn't exactly support your point.
That's why you got dugg down, I'd guess. - Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I saw some of the games for Xbox and they look great. I have a Wii and if I had more time (maybe during the sumer) i would pick up a 360...

Yeah? Well... Bill Gates donates millions of dollars to AIDS orphans and ***** these days. :) - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Article is long on speculation, short on info.
Without any real info from MS, it's tough to tell what would happen.
It's possible MS will go with a bargain-basement strategy and just cost-reduce the crap out of it.
Another is they will instead maintain the same price but add more capability.
Or of course something in between.
This article doesn't give any hint how to tell which of these is the case, so the article is almost completely useless. - gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3IMHO the importance of HDMI, digital vs analog thing is exaggerated. I have a very hard time telling the difference between them and the HDMI connections are kind of fussy and troublesome at times. I usually opt for component for it's simplicity and reliability.
- Flynnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@gwolf
I agree. I am a video snob, and can only tell the difference if they are running side by side (component vs, HDMI), and thats if I am REALLY looking hard. Even switching back and forth is almost impossible to notice. I think people like the idea that HDMI is digital, hence it must be "better". But the truth is I would doubt that anyone here could tell the difference, dare I say I would be shocked if they could. I mean I guess you could say HDMI is good to have because its future proof, but TV's will be using component for a loooong time. I dont see TV's coming without component inputs for at least another 10 years. (hell they still accept composite, and s-video on most sets) in which time a new xbox will most likely be out anyway.
So to end with.....if you are waiting for HDMI cause you think it will result in superior image quality, you are waiting for no good reason. - fmcivic16si, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I would buy another 360 if one came with HDMI. Need the inputs free on TV. Multiplayer on two TV's would be awesome too. If there is a price drop and HDMI, MS would be a step up on the next gen consoles....
I really don't think they will drop the price this soon. IMO - revenge7, on 10/12/2007, -11/+13How much would a PC that can run games as well as the 360 cost?
Hint: Much more than the 360. - shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Your not serious, are you? Do I have to pull up links to the dozens of Sony *****-ups?
Every system has its problems. Individual blog postings do not represent the majority. - phronko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Xbox 360 games are free too, when you shoplift them.
In fact, the console itself is free too. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'm just waiting for Halo3 to come out, if they dropped the price and gave it a upgrade I would be very happy. Hell even if they just dropped it to 299, I'd probably go out and get one now.
- revenge7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Let me know how the PC is when you are being sued for downloading games.
- wafflez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yea seriously...i don't know how it is in other places, but here in LA, er, southern california area, everybody wants one but the people who don't have it or got a wii or a 360 instead did so due to price.
- ROFLance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This whole comment thread looks like something out of a horror movie... or youtube.
- revenge7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is a simple solution to this.
Rent.
There are very few games that people will play for longer than the almost 2 weeks you get when you rent from Blockbuster. - gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would buy a PS3 if it had games, I bought a 360 because it has games.
If Microsoft is really planning to do this they should start exhausting their supplies and cut the price right around April.Get some of that discretionary tax refund income coming their way. There are a couple of potential killer apps releasing about then too. The sooner they announce it the more the inventories of unsold PS3's will grow. - phronko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1arbguy: I can't tell if you're completely missing the point, or if you're making your own point about the distinction between downloading software and stealing a physical object and the difference between the two. I'm sorta thinking it's the former.
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft are in a good position to get some money back after they dropped the console under it's manufacturing price when it was released November 2005. But, they are in a better position since the PS3 is too high. What would be logical is cut the price in March just before the PS3 lands in Europe.
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Syn
Unfortunately, that's just how technology goes. Price drops are going to happen sooner or later, it would be better if it happened sooner since it would put the PS3 in a really bad position. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just want a digital connection, my cheap LCD doesn't handle the analog VGA very well. I'd pay 50 bucks for a dvi/hdmi add-on, and I don't mean a conversion adapter.
- radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It sounds like the xbox is really struggling and it's only going to get worse now that the next-generation Japanese consoles are out. The key to Microsoft's success in this arena isn't more ports but unique, exclusive content.
The same game on 5 different consoles does not make the market "competitive" for gamers - it's still the same game, same design, same mechanics.
As long as Wii or PS3 are the realm of unique and exclusive content, it makes little sense to support Microsoft in their console endeavor. - ragonamuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do they plan on adding accelerometers at any point?
- chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The Wii at this point can afford to be at the same price as the core 360(or even more if you factor in rebates that the 360 is getting in some lesser known retailers). Nintendo successfully used the controller to give you the experience you just can't get anywhere else and for many, that justifies the price tag.
- civdis24, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3wait a minute... the core model of the xbox 360 CURRENTLY sells for $299. So, rumor has it MS is going to drop the price to the current price, and "upgrade" the hardware with cheaper parts. Yay.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There are so many great games for the xbox360 currently available and upcoming (as in 'a month or two') that I literally can't keep up. It's incredible.
- Flynnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree that $60 is high. But in truth the prices seem to drop VERY quickly on a lot of games. (at least at places like toys r us)
I just picked up tomb raider for $20. Not a great game, but for $20 I cant complain.
Lots of great games for $40 and under.
http://www.toysrus.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=2268830 - Burritoking924, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Now that I know of this, im gonna pick one up with the revision and the price drop.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well with the microcenter rebate it brings premium down to $300, and core down to $200, do a google search and find it.
- gbacci, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great point, that is really what has prevented me from taking the plunge. I cannot cough up $60 per game, it's just nuts. And for the guy who suggested "rent" I don't see that as a good option unless it's a mediocre game. Obviously this guy doesn't play online much or have sports seasons, etc. The games I like have value well beyond 2 weeks.
- Mitchum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I completely agree.
This story is way too speculative. Microsoft is reducing their shipping forecast from 13 million to twelve and that somehow has gotten everyone to think about buying one. Fantastic. - Laqueefa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can always buy games used. Yea, they might have some minor scratches, but for the most part they work fine.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@phronko
if i am missing the point, then what is the point?
p.s. dont underestimate me, i know more about this stuff than almost everyone. - chinaman1472, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you can tell a difference between component vs HDMI, then you're just being anal. How the hell do you even enjoy the games you play because you can nitpick the differences and "bad" graphics?
- aznmikex215, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An initial investment of about $500.00 ($400.00 for Xbox 360 pro console + $50.00 for 2nd controller and any additonal accessories etc.) for a console is reasonable if you are comparing it to a PC. A high end PC graphics card alone is that much, then you would not want to bottleneck it with slow ram or an old cpu. Consider that and playing games on a PC (although prettier) can cost 3x's as much as a dedicated console.
My only problem is the price of games. 360 and PS3 games are like $60.00 even $70.00 !! WTF is that? $10.00 ~ $20.00 more per game adds up rather quickly.
So if they are gonna start dropping anything. Drop the price of games!! Maybe even start adding combo deals. Any 3 Games for $100.00 - revenge7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Reply FTW
