- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28I don't think their update was meant to brick any boxes, even hacked ones. I believe that would be illegal.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32Awww. good old RDM 23...
Of course, Apple has ***** things up with updates before too. Only when they do it, and then fix it, pathetic ***** like you say "Good for them! This proves they CARE about their customers! They fixed the problem that they caused."
Do you not realize how fun it will be when the Zune does well? Not beating hte iPod, since NO ONE at Microsoft expects that. But when it doesn't fail, and we get a post about how your life got so meaningless that you decided to commit suicide, do you not realize how many people here will be checking to see where you are buried so we can piss on your grave?
Say hi to "daniel" for us. Sorry to see he has run away from this site. - lustre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Yeah. Updating things bad. Best to leave them broken.
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Hurray for patching gaming consoles!!
- Zipp425, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21It Happens...
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17No I wouldn't, don't put words in my mouth. The only reason why the PS3 receives so much bad publicity is because of Sony being jack asses.

- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Not sure why you got dugg down, but it's true. ***** ups happen, if this happened to all the consoles, then this would be unacceptable, but it was only around 1%, so let's not all get picky here.
- crombenevolant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I got the update and had no problems whatsoever.
- Ashkc88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12The bricked consoles were supposedly all modded Xbox 360's (that is what Microsoft said on their forum). Mine is working fine with the update and I enjoy the new features.
- cakestick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Nice math, KingPsyz.
Less than one percent could still be 1 in 101, which would be a considerable amount. - Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yeah, when MS has a problem everyone bitches and talks *****. if it were apple or nintendo no one would care. my first DS lite would crash randomly, I got it replaced with no hassle and didn't feel it necessary to make a blog rant about it and bash the hell out of nintendo.360 is a good system, and I am sure MS will replace the bricked consoles.
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's unfortunate that these things happen, I hope the people who were effected can get their consoles back online soon without much hassle. Software isn't perfect, and from my understanding, it wasn't any thing wrong with the update, but the installer of the update which messed things up.
***** happens, let's move on people. - pixelmixer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11"Yay, spreadsheet company! Work that mojo!"
I like how you called it the "spreadsheet" company. I'm a windows user and dont even have Microsoft office installed... They also actually make the *Microsoft* Windows operating system you know.... its not just *Microsoft Spreadsheets*..
I'm not so much a microsoft fan, the only software created by microsoft that I actually use is the operating system, everything else i use is either 3rd party or open source. So that persona created by the mac commercials that people seem to be indulging for some reason, is actually not true... in case there are some people out there who actually believes windows is only for spreadsheets and documents..... LMAO. - plex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"live" oops...
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Sorry about the misspelling, I was just kinda pissed. Beta testers would miss their units getting broke? Humm....looks like Microsoft needs to hire better beta testers if thats the case!
- RedViper1999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Good thing I haven't turned my on this week. I'll just keep it off the net till this is straightened out. I'll play COD3 and GOW singleplayer for awhile.
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What happened to the beta testers? Does Microsoft not test there updates?
- mianos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How many out there? Less then 1% of a million is nearly 10,000 consoles bricked. That's a large number. It's like 99% reliability for voip, i.e. 1 minute out of 100, that's a hell of a lot of downtime in this business.
- knodi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Less then %1 of the people got this error.
"We're hearing from a small number of customers (less than 1%) that are having issues with the Fall Console Update. I've been told that the team should have an updated version in the next 12-24 hours. We'll let you know when the issue is resolved.
If you are having problems with the update for any reason, please call Xbox Support (1-800-4-MY-XBOX in the US and Canada). We're working with those affected to get them back up and running, and we're committed to making sure the update doesn't cause problems for anyone else." - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sorry to burst your bubble but this is also happening on unmodified/ non-refurbished consoles.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3While I agree with your sentiments of flaming the Apple Fanbois (so easy to do, yet so satisfying nonetheless), get your facts right.
The first major spreadsheet was not Lotus 1-2-3, that was second. The first spreadsheet, the real "killer ap" for the personal computer (in business) was Visi-Calc:
http://www.bricklin.com/visicalc.htm
You can actually download the executable there. - doskir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah they fixed the update so no new consoles get killed anymore
- doskir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2most things people said is plain wrong full REAL story:
microsoft shipped the update but didnt test it on unpatched consoles without the spring updates so these got bricked with the E71 error spring patched modded consoles were still fine except for some hacked 360s with samsung drives they displayed E66 which was easily fixed by reflashing the drive with a newer hacked firmware hitachi consoles with spring update were not bricked at all
the E71 error has NOTHING to do with hacking detection it was just a plain stupid fault with microsoft forgetting to include necessary files from the spring update - irieKEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2MS didn't intend to render those systems inoperable; it merely meant to detect them.
There's a big difference. It's like conducting a traffic study where you try to see how many people drive over the speed limit.
MS isn't evil in the way that you're saying they are. They are vile in a slightly different way. - verb0ten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3For what its worth, I applied the update and had no problems. The article quotes microsoft stating this only affects 1% of the user base. If what microsoft says is true, you probably will not have a problem.
- irieKEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2RTFA, the patch is not intended to brick modded consoles.
- crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Shouldn't it be called a "dead" update?
- codman36, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mine works great and love the improvements,Although it is my second console.
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@lustre
I believe the systems weren't broken to begin with. This just added features not available at launch (but could've been had they not launched a year early) and apparently broke a few systems. As the userbase grows so will the issues. - SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow. Something in the Digg editing system died.
- SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately I got this exact error message... 5 minutes after I got my replacement console (from the 3 red lights of death) out of the box from Purolator. Fanboy's
- DocDEB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A bit here. A bit there. Pretty soon you have a bit brick.
- MrSidnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nicely put
Initial reports suggested these problems were isolated to users who'd modified their firmware to play back-ups, but that's not the case.
keyword being Backups. - BloodyRids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK, 12 year old..
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"What happened to the beta testers? Does Microsoft not test there updates?"
That is a pretty dumb conclusion.. If you have 1,000 beta testers, and not a single one bricks after the update, then how would they "miss" the problem?
Can't fix something, if you don't know it's broken. - Ashkc88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh Ok, I read somewhere they were comeing up with an update to fix it, must have been a rumor. Threw me off, thanks for clearing it up.
- davidmackey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ATTENTION: YOU'RE AN IDIOT
- irieKEN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Beta testers routinely miss stuff. Look at all the chaos that follows OS updates (a recently botched Ubuntu Linux update comes to mind).
BTW, it's "their," not "there." - Ashkc88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But that doesn't make much sense, because when your Xbox is connected to the internet it updates everything up to fall. So if you bought your Xbox now, it would update the spring updates and the fall updates. And if the fall updates come before the spring updates, and doesn't allow the 360 to update, how is Microsoft going to make an update to fix this when they cant receive updates?
- irieKEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't say that they are particularly bad programmers, but I'd say that I get the same feeling of security and stability on the 360 that I get running Windows (works fine, but needs the occasional reboot).
If you want to complain about loose code, complain about Diebold. - doskir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they cant fix the consoles that already get E71 they are telling people to contact customer support who probably will exchange them and most people who had these problems just got their refurbished consoles back from microsoft without any updates and when they updated to fall they died
- McGrude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I got the E71 when I downloaded and then ran Texas Hold 'em when it was released.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@skoles: They're big PCs in tiny boxes, with new and un-masstested parts. Every week earlier they can release gives them an edge on competition. The thing has to stay at least marginally current for ~4 years, and constantly sees new releases. What do you expect?
- fastsix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2No the PS3 release feels rushed because we keep reading stories about how they can't get good enough yeilds to hit their initial production numbers (i.e Japan from 100,000 down to 80,000). That's a sign of quality problems and assuming they want to get every console out the door they can, what they deem acceptable might end up being a bit lower than it should.
Or maybe not, maybe they can't hit their ship numbers because they're being very cautious about quality control. Time will tell. Regardless, that's why it 'feels' rushed. - KingPsyz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1RTFA yourself turbo
"The two are related, though. Microsoft's attempts to sniff out hackers has resulted in crossfire with users who don't even know how to crack open their case. 1UP user ReverendSlim ran into the problem not long after Microsoft had repaired a completely unrelated problem. "Got my 360 back from Microsoft today after 2 weeks without it, plugged it up, it downloaded the update, and now all it will do is flash ERROR CODE E71 when you turn it on. So much for playing Gears or CoD3 next week," he said."
Pay attention to this part:"Microsoft's attempts to sniff out hackers has resulted in crossfire with users who don't even know how to crack open their case" - styromaniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I apologize. I was being a whiny little bitch to Microsoft and I do agree with you irieKEN, but I know nothing about Diebold.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2SSShhhhh..... It happens.
- SenorFrog21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2***** you. Nobody cares that you posted this story first. I wish people would just shut the ***** up sometimes. The two words that should be banned from digg are "dupe" and "fanboy". ***** ***** ***** ***** *****.
- Aleman360, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From the inside: it was a versioning conflict with newer 360s. Very simple fix.
