- kineticonline, on 10/12/2007, -11/+117A 360 price cut was/is always going to happen, so confirming what everyone already knew is totally pointless. The worst thing about the article is that its doesn't actually confirm anything, other than Microsoft are lowering their manufacturing costs and will eventually pass on some of the savings.
It has already been know for a while that MS are now making a small profit on the 360, and its predicted that the first round of actual price drops (not bundles) could happen sometime Q1 if the 2007 financial year (April-June) - Andy.D, on 10/12/2007, -19/+114Marked an inaccurate.
This is not "confirmed" in any way. - icealchemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+63No *****, the bigger question is when.
- latova, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28It's pretty obvious they're doing this. They didn't do it right now because they still get a lot of sales for the holidays, but as soon as christmas is over, sales drop. It doesn't take a genuis to figure out that they'll drop the price at this time.
I've been waiting for a price drop. They've generally ironed out all the problems with the system, so it's the perfect time for me to get it. Then I'll wait for a price drop with the wii and get that too next year. - Elias1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Mid January is too soon. If they dropped the price in mid January, many who bought them as Christmas gifts would still be within their 30 day return period so they would be able to get a refund equal to the price drop amount. That would negate Microsofts incentive for waiting until after Christmas to drop the price.
It will likely be in February or late January at the earliest. - dankoleary, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I'd put my money on mid - Jan 2007. They have NOTHING to gain by dropping the price between now and Christmas. I think X-box will do decent business this season since it's the only system you can just walk in to a store and buy.
- kylesellers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Actually, he is right. Note the word "financial" there? Fiscal years and calender years are not always the same.
- chrismm, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24No, ODOYLE RULES.
- diafel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16In other news, meteorologists have confirmed the sun will rise tomorrow.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Well, if we can take Sony's price cut model for the PS2 and apply it to the PS3 then there's no way that they can keep up with the 360's price, EVER. If the PS2 was $300 in 1999-2000 and dropped to just under half of that this last year, then does that mean the PS3 will only drop to under $300 in SIX YEARS? Holy ***** that's still the launch price of the core 360.
- ukm1728, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Fiscal calendars vary. Q1 for the company I work at is March-May.
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16True dat. The quicker the better, good games are coming and if they really want to hurt SONY on their weak point for massive damage (ok ok, I know it's getting old, but it's freakin' true), they gotta deal us.
I got my 360 on the 17th [and a Wii on the 19th, expensive weekend!] -- there was an "offer you cannot refuse" on he 360 (the pro version console and 4 games, one of which was GoW, for 449$ CAD) that day and it led Microsoft to sell more 360's than SONY and Nintendo combined. The guy at the FutureShop told me they had sold around 120 on that day. Insane.
I never really tought so, but cutting prices helps BIG freakin' TIME, and SONY simply cannot afford to match such a move, so they could really go down fast if faced with such a scenario. - Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This Christmas season does not matter. Wii and PS3 are already completely sold out at all locations, and any consoles they send between now and Xmas will be snapped up before a majority of people even know they were on the shelves. So what is Mom and Pop to do, when they have a kid begging for a console and none to buy. Well they walk in the local Gamestop and see a wall full of 360's, and snap one up, because that is what is in stock. PS3 and Wii will sell out whatever they sent, but in the end 360 will win THIS holiday season because they have the actual stock to back up the demand.
- Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"Xbox 360 has sold 6 million consoles worldwide."
Not to sure what part of statement is so hard to understand? Do you have any proof for the numbers that you posted above, or are the numbers that a company reports to its shareholders (which btw is a federal offense to lie about) not good enough for you? I understand some people may not like Microsoft or the 360, but please, have some information to back your argument before you make yourself look like and idiot on Digg. - srusso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10the smartest thing to do is drop the core system from the new line and make the premium system $299.99
- mlock2k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Yeah this could be a SONY killer. But yet more reason to buy an Xbox360
- nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Good thing I haven't bought one yet :)
- Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+117.5 million;
http://nexgenwars.com/ - joaob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9What are your alternatives for console gaming?
I've yet to have a issue with the 360's load times. Though to be fair I have not played Burnout Revenge. - isthisnametaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7or upgrade the core system. A simple memory card packed in will greatly improve the value of the core system.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"You're quoting ship numbers! Every damn console generation it never fails."
What you fail to realize is that ship numbers are EXTREMELY close to number of units sold, especially for hot, sought-after products during the holiday season. Sure, there might be half a dozen consoles per store that are just sitting in the stockroom (these are shipped, but not sold), but these items will be sold within weeks anyway, before the next shipment arrives. So what's the ***** problem with quoting ship numbers, exactly? They're fairly accurate... and if not, they will be within a month. - MasterFunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Well, I wouldn't say all the games are crap. Resistance has been getting very good reviews. But if you are talking bang-for-your-buck, it is definitely not worth $660, and it is also very arguable that Gears is a much better game.
- Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Not at all;
6 mil sold at the end of the FY, this does not include the Xmas rush which for sure will boost numbers. They are expecting 8-10 mil sold by the end of the year.
http://www.microsoft.com/msft/earnings/FY07/earn_rel_q1_07.mspx - Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Gee, they might as well just say "sometime in the future the cost will go down!" I noticed in the article they're saying Microsoft is thinking of ways to reduce the cost...yeah, cause, I'm sure Sony isn't doing the same thing.
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If they get it down to 250........nintendo and Sony have to worry
- brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i think a $300 or $325 price point for the premium system would be a great value. Especially considering that hard drives don't cost nearly anything per GB these days.
If you think about it, cutting costs from the premium system wouldn't be hard. Right now you're getting, for $100:
20GB Hard drive (roughly 15GB usable after 360 software)
Headset
Wireless instead of wired controller
So,
wireless controller difference in price, $10
Headset, probably $5
20GB hard drive - $85?
85/20 = $4.25/GB?
That's ridiculous. The hard drive isn't NAND flash, so there is no reason for it to be that expensive. A normal 2.5" hard drive is about $1.20. So the hard drive *should* be around $30-35 cost to the consumer.
That leaves $50 to be cut off, plus the extra that can be saved from more efficient/bulk manufacturing of the other electronics in the system. - isthisnametaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6there already is some kind of a price cut out there now, although it's not as nice as a straight cut. A few stores: target, best buy, and walmart (possibly others), bundled the premium system with a game on black friday. Target had it with GRAW this weekend and walmart/best buy had "a choice of a game". Hopefully these deals will start to emerge past the "black friday."
- cogsprocket, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Except that Microsoft doesn't get hit on a return. The vendor does. The vendor has already purchased the product from Microsoft and therefore does not have to demand the difference from Microsoft.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Bill and Microsoft would have to be morons not to take notice of digg and the Amazon "special". The fact that they sold out so fast should be a huge hint that a large hardware price cut would help the xbox 360 far out pace ps3 in sales. Because sony doesn't have its act together, they could almost corner the US market with a really bold move.
- pixelfox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Yes. Then I'll finally get a 360... but how much? $50 or so? Or making the Premium bundle the $300 config?
When? Bet you before Halo 3 comes out.... - srusso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well Nintendo can drop their price as well... I know they have the head room with the price see as they are already making money on the system.
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nintendo are in their own race, I don't think Microsoft are too bothered about Nintendo, because the Nintendo doesn't offer HD etc and so on. Microsoft want to cripple Sony; though, Microsoft haven't had to do much work on that part.
- IdanE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You know what? this really is a no brainer. if any of you recall, MS stated that once the system is out the door, they're going to get to work on cost reduction - something that every tech company does, be it sony, MS, linksys or anyone else. They also stated that they will hopefully be able to reduce costs in a way that will allow an almost annual price drop - This was said long before the launch.
So yeah, they're gonna drop the price. The question is only when, how much, and what will be the benefits - lowered price mights mean a 500$ 360HDDVD, a 400$ system with larger HDD and wifi built in, etc. THAT would be news. This is just jerking off to MS speak - kineticonline, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4wrong place to be asking but yes you can but as far as i know but keep the account on a memory card so you dont have to keep recovering the account. (if the date/time you last access the account is before the last update on the MS servers you have to download it again)
- evilizor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've also been tempted to grab a 360 lately with all the awesome bundles being advertised. Although besides price, my other major problem is that I have yet to purchase a HDTV. Which kind of defeats the purpose of owning a 360 now, doesn't it? I guess I could catch up on the backward compatible Xbox 1 games, until I'm able to afford a decent HD setup. (Yes, I'm one of the few n00bs who hasn't played Halo yet.)
- Weenis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They have no reason to at this point.
- brianbennett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It certainly makes sense to me that they'd hold off on price cuts. They may be profiting now, but were they not hemmoraging money when the 360 was released? it only makes sense that they would try to recoup some of that.
- lasombragh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Nice. And here I thought that developers had something to do with poor load times...
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4CONFIRMED: Most Digg posts are pointless and... inaccurate.
- cogsprocket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What the above poster said but more to the point. Despite whether or not Sony is looking for ways to reduce cost they have made a very daring move. While the business model for consoles includes losses on hardware made up by licensing revenue you have to take into consideration that Sony is taking a massive loss by comparison to past ventures. Sure they want to find a way to cut their cost but that's not saying that that will translate into a lower cost for the consumer. To further this argument it will be at least a year before we see any form of price cut on the PS3. That being said your argument doesn't really matter.
Of course Microsoft is going to try to find ways of decreasing manufacturing costs, any smart business would do so, that's not telling us anything. The other side of that coin is that they will more than likely be the first to trickle that production cost reduction to the consumer. Sony isn't going to do it because they've just released and the fact is that people will pay $600 for their console. Nintendo isn't going to do it because they're already seeing a profit on every console sold. A reduction in price at this stage is a reduction in profit. My guess is that their production model is probably pretty stable and improvements will happen sooner but still while consumers are willing to pay the current price you won't see a drop until initial demand is satisfied and a focus must be put on marketing through price movements. - CritterNYC, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7"This Christmas season does not matter. Wii and PS3 are already completely sold out at all locations"
Ah, but Nintendo is pushing out 200,000 more Wii consoles to the US every week through the end of the year. Gotta love the fact that they're pushing out more consoles every week than Sony was able to put together for the whole US PS3 launch. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They can both use the same account, but not at the same time. Just transfer one over with a memory card. It will cancel the other one out and you'll have to reassign your account to the other 360 when you log back in on the other one. It's done to prevent account stealing.
- KJSatz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Those quotes only CONFIRM that a cut will eventually happen. Duh. Not before January 1 though. I'd imagine one will occur around 2Q07 after the PS3 has finally launched in Europe.
- cogsprocket, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6@tmanka
A fiscal year is not always equal to a physical year.
For example. The fiscal year for the DoD begins in fall of the previous year.
edit - Plenty of good examples above me as well. - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Sony don't care about the PS3 other than what it can do to help them force their DVD standard on the market.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4According to this:
http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/12303/Xbox-360-What-the-Numbers-Say/
Microsoft is on track to sell 10 million units by christmas. - converge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://digg.com/tech_news/68_Of_Diggs_Go_Dugg_WITHOUT_Viewing
- puddgomez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sometimes dell has a deal where you get 15% off of XBOX 360 orders over $400. I just got an XBOX 360 Platinum this weekend for $340 with free shipping
- SourWorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Are they still planning on switching over to 65nm chips around Q1 of 2007? A price drop around then would be great to move out remaining systems using the old chips.
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If it's just going to be you playing on it, then I don't see the problem with it :)
