- mymidgetfriend, on 10/11/2007, -51/+405I don't see any quote from microsoft that says all 360s are defective. Buried as inaccurate.
- UberCoolCam, on 10/11/2007, -18/+286They are all defective? Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't that sound like a reason for a recall?
- pktgumby, on 10/11/2007, -6/+208Skip the blog:
http://www.crn.com.au/story.aspx?CIID=85600&src=site-marq - acurism, on 10/11/2007, -18/+144Wow! I sense a recall coming before long even with the extended warranty.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+113I guess that means I'm the only guy with a fully functional 360. I feel so lucky...
- Imagine3, on 10/11/2007, -5/+99Anybody got an address where Microsoft states this. Not some news site. Until I see it on xbox.com, microsoft.com or majornelson.com I am not buying it.
- turquoisefish, on 10/11/2007, -2/+83Not entirely sure how your coming out would make a difference, but well done you
- plncrzy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+63No, yours is fine.
*rolls eyes* - NinjaBoy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+65wow i just bought one last night.
- t3hbagel, on 10/11/2007, -11/+69I think Microsoft is doing the right thing here, extending the warranty for three years and publicly admitting their mistake. Good PR move. I myself had to send in the 360 I waited in line for 10 hours for on launch day, and the process was speedy enough. I'm hoping this replacement doesn't fail as well.
- beatmonger, on 10/11/2007, -2/+53I really dislike how the new system delays comment posting. You never know if your obvious joke has been made already.
With that said, digg me down. - 1337Einstein, on 10/11/2007, -2/+52So, what, did they use sign language to admit it, or maybe they blinked in morse code...
- Bakkster, on 10/11/2007, -5/+51Well, fortunately they're not dangerously defective. Also, tons of people have not had the problems due to their setup, so I can understand why they don't want to recall them.
That being said, they should really refurb everyone's 360, otherwise people are going to be REALLY pissed when their 360 dies at 3 years 1 month... - fantasticFlan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+42Don't listen to these guys. Stand tall, gay Jake, stand tall.
- Lynxplus, on 10/11/2007, -8/+48Im not a fanboy of one company over another, I just love video games in general. Througout my life I have owned consoles from all the major corporations. Out of all the consoles I have owned I have never had a piece of Nintendo Hardware break. Today I read on Gizmodo how the Wii would be in short supply this year and taking a stab at Nintendo for not producing enough to meet demand, while on one hand I agree that they need to ramp up production, on the other hand I would rather buy a piece of hardware that I knew wasn't going to breakdown on me. So as slow as Nintendo is at least they are manufacturing a quality product.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -22/+61I am digging this because I want to see some research done to find out if this is in fact true.
To the front page with you! - Talus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+41I've never had a problem with my 360 ... with my luck, I'll get the Red Rings 1 day after my 3 years is up :(
- Wrathernaut, on 10/11/2007, -5/+38A console that isn't fundamentally broken?
- KarthVader, on 10/11/2007, -8/+39MS has already extended their warranty to 3 years from 1 year. I would rather have that than a recall and no warranty.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/11/2007, -10/+40That's what happens when you rush to be the first one on the market. You skip some very important processes that every consumer electronic should go through. I play my 360 way more than my PS3, but I have to give credit to Sony for making a reliable product.
- Wrathernaut, on 10/11/2007, -4/+34Let's hear that in 37 months when the three red lights pop up...
- beatmonger, on 10/11/2007, -5/+34When you came out is irrelevant to the build quality of your Xbox.
(sorry, I had to) - Harrison88, on 10/11/2007, -11/+39Sigh... if this was Sony you'd all be ripping them a new hole.
- djphatjive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+32Mine is a launch one. And I don't even know what the red ring looks like. Hell I still use my original headset.
- distrbnce, on 10/11/2007, -3/+28Sony's have a bad day? I was thinking just the opposite.
- rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -6/+31go back to school.
- rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -7/+30so you are the one who puts duct tape over the vents
- Yousty, on 10/11/2007, -4/+27launch day console still works perfectly for me :)
- 1jaxstate1, on 10/11/2007, -21/+42Well, you get a 3 year warranty, so who cares. Tell me another product that comes with 3 year warranty, besides a car or a washing machine. I'm looking to get a 360, reguardless of the bad PR.
- andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22Come back when you can tell the difference between a joke and a misunderstanding.
- romainechester, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21Hmm.. let's try to make some sense here...
You have a witch. Ok... How did you get a January? Is that possible? What was defective after you came out?
I'm confused. - mythicflux, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20Welcome to Digg. Flamewars for fun and profit.
- drummerdude, on 10/11/2007, -5/+24Haha I just turned on my 360 today and was greeted by the red ring of death... how ironic
- fmorel90, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23You're right. All I see is a "Problem loading page" message.
- kingfoot, on 10/11/2007, -10/+29wow. and if this was Sony saying all are defective, you'd all eat this up and slap Sony's hand. Meanwhile stories like the "less than 1% failure rate on PS3s" bring nothing but "FAKE!" flamewars.
- T3rry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Yep, i'm surprised this didn't get a recall, or atleast get rid of these clamps, sooner.
Their "xclamps" the heatsink mounting method they use, when they get hot, they bend and the contact between the headsinks and the cpu or gpu is weakened, making it overheat, giving us the wonderful "3 red light" error, which can be fixed very easily with about $10 worth of hardware and very little electrical/mechanical knowledge.
I've fixed several 3rl consoles with this method. - opsknight, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20Vista = ME lol..not even close. You obviously havent used Vista but take everything you read on digg as the gospel.
- Scruffydan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16one that wont break after 3 years and 1 day
- jeffeb3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18hard drives. Home loudspeakers. My home audio receiver has two years. My TV has 36 months on the tube (not the labor or the other parts)
- TheDragon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17Wait a second.. Are you saying that MICROSOFT is more popular than SONY?? Where have you been the past twenty years?
- psyonide, on 10/11/2007, -8/+23If this is true then a mass recall can't be too far behind. A company simply cannot admit to 100% of an entire product being defective without doing something to appease their customers. I just hope Microsoft doesn't conclude that a 3 year extended warranty is "good enough" to address this issue.
Personally I don't want to sit around and wait for my Xbox to die before I can get defect-free hardware. I want to have this problem solved before it becomes an issue. - alvinrod, on 10/11/2007, -7/+22Then look forward to sending it in for repair at least once during that three year period, if not more since you'll likely get a refurbished unit in return.
The fact that there's a defect in it suggests it's going to break a lot sooner than it should if there weren't such a problem. Sure you'll be covered for three years, but after that you're screwed. You've still got the same defective model as before, only now it will be broken and you won't have a free fix. If you feel like spending another few hundred dollars in three years, be my guest.
I'm waiting until they come out with a new hardware version that isn't going to go ***** up on me after only a few years of use. Until then, I'm staying far, far away from the Xbox 360 as good as it may be. - JSager, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15I'm a similar type of guy, Nintendo had a great track record with me until my Wii broke recently. On the flip side, Nintendo sent me a new Wii which took 2 days to get here and paid for the return 100%, so I can't exactly complain... actually I'd take it the other direction and say I'm highly impressed by their customer service.
- rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18what is seems to work? it either works or doesn't.
- CCB0x45, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14its great collecting dust on my shelf because there isnt any good games for it since zelda. I've had a 360 since it came out, never had a single problem with it.
- spiderworm, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17Very few companies do the "right thing" and Microsoft is not one of them. Microsoft is doing the thing that makes the most business sense, which is to own up to the design flaw to prevent their sizable XBOX investment from going down the toilet.
Think about it. If Microsoft continued to deny the problem for another year, likely a very large percentage of XBOXes would fail. Just to guesstimate a number... 50% (reasonable I suppose if 100% on the market are defective). This would result in class action lawsuits and the perceived value of the XBOX brand name (not to mention the MS brand name) would decline significantly.
What they are doing will keep the perceived value of the XBOX brand up and avoid very costly lawsuits and settlements. The $1.15 billion is peanuts compared to the loss of future revenues plus the billions of dollars they've already sunk on the XBOX if they were to do nothing.
The "right thing" to do in this case would be much more costly than $1.15 billion and that's why they're not doing it. The "right thing" would be to set up a recall program to repair every defective XBOX on the market and throw in a little something to say "we're sorry" to the owners. When I go to a restaurant and my steak is not cooked right, they make it right by fixing the problem and giving me vouchers for free meals or desserts every time. They're afraid that I would walk out and never come back otherwise. If I were the owner of one of these defective dead XBOXes, I would demand compensation for the hassle, or sell the damn thing and discourage everyone I know from buying one. This is what anyone should do when buying defective electronics of any type from any company.
If Microsoft did the "right thing" here, it would cost them a lot more in the short run (not as much as the lawsuit route undoubtedly) but would have fantastic payoffs in terms of customer loyalty and brand value perception. Very few companies would do the "right thing". - g00ee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Are you sure about that? This is taken from xbox.com
:New Post-Service Warranty:
If we repair your Xbox 360 within the original warranty period, you will receive either the balance of your original warranty, or 90 days, whichever is longer. - eightyd, on 10/11/2007, -12/+25This sounds like someone warping a quote to get page hits. Like mymidgetgirlfriend, I'm burying as inaccurate.
- badogg, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Digg is free, and I am lazy
